We came to Split Rock for a family reunion (8/3 to 8/5). I wanted to enjoy my stay, but there was nothing but inconveniences. When I first booked the reservation, I was told that I would be booked with my family reunion group. This didn't happen. While my entire family was booked at the Town Center Resort, they booked us at the Lodge. The first disappointment. I totally understand the "rustic" charm of the Lodge and the beautiful view of Lake Harmony, but I could not help but feel creeped out by its décor. It felt like scenes from the hotel in "The Shining" - retro 70's-80's and mad CREEPY. While exploring the place, I thought I would run into those twins at the elevator or the little boy on his tricycle chanting "RedRum, RedRum" - the Lodge is SERIOUSLY outdated. And there was NO ONE there - I spotted only a few guests on my floor, but it seemed the entire place was empty - with no staff in sight. I was pleased to see that our room was good. The beds/pillows were comfortable, the bathroom was clean, and everything was neatly prepared upon arrival. The carpet seemed sticky, though - so it was kind of uncomfortable walking around barefooted. The funny part for us was when my son was playing his PS4, the TV literally fizzed out. It stopped working completely! We called the front desk - no answer. We decided to walk to the front desk, it was after 8pm and CLOSED - lights out - NO ONE AVAILABLE. Split Rock has issues with communication because there was NO SIGN indicating an opening/closing time of the front desk. What's also alarming about this was the sign at the entrance of the building that warns to close all doors to "keep wildlife from entering the building" - but the emergency and side doors of the building were WIDE OPEN all day/every day - even at night! So, I guess if a Bear decides to make dinner visits, there's no security and no-one available at the front desk for emergencies? That really concerned me. For the price and inconvenience, there should be at least a continental breakfast served for its guests at the Lodge. Their inside restaurant, The Lakeview Tavern does not even open until 5pm - but the hotel conveniently places snack machines through-out the place. I'm sorry, but after a long drive to your resort, I do not want candy bars, but was hoping for a meal and looking forward to checking out your inside restaurant after checking-in. It's a shame that guests do not enjoy the convenience of breakfast, lunch or even room service with their only inside restaurant that has a very nice view of Lake Harmony. We literally had to look around for other places to eat. Not to mention that the menu at the Lakeview Tavern does not have a great selection and is grossly overpriced for a meal that's just meh. Since my family reunion was at the Town Center, the drive over from the Lodge is of short distance. There is shuttle service to and from the Lodge that goes to the Town Center and H2Ooooh water park, but I didn't want to chance it since I felt inconvenienced already. Well, again, their "Split Rock Grill" was another place that opened and closed at inconvenient times for such a packed environment. I and my family did enjoy the breakfast buffet from 9am to 11am, but it was also EXTREMELY expensive. The menu for dinner served after 5pm was another overpriced experience with just a meh menu with meh food. I guess the idea of "the Grill" to be closed during lunchtime was to give the Pizzeria some business - with $25 pizza pies and $3.49 12 oz bottles of soda? Such an overpriced place lacking in selection. Split Rock, adults would also like a variety of choices - not just the "kid menu" choices. I mean, we're paying for our kids to enjoy this experience - a bar is not enough for the paying adult. It does not make any sense in a highly dependent-on technological environment that you will get zero bars or a "no service" on your phone or have problems connecting to a server at both the Lodge and the Town Center. The WIFI was extremely poor. And with the inconvenience of your restaurants' opening times, it's now customary in 2018 for folks to search on-line of nearby places. Overall, we enjoyed the Lake, our room and the fact that they tried their best to please us by installing a new TV for us. But I really became perturbed when we tried checking out on Sunday. We arrived at the front desk at 10:30am and again, there was NO ONE there - it was CLOSED. How were we to check out?? There was a phone at the desk, we called numerous times with the number given, but no one answered! I was not going to be charged an additional $150 after the 11am check out, so we had to drive to the Town Center to check out. I just wonder if this lack of communication is on purpose to make money? If so, it's just not right. There are guests who REALLY want to enjoy and appreciate their experience at your resort. I was one of those guests. read more
