We came here for a weekend for our anniversary and I wish I could have stayed a week. We stayed in a king deluxe room. We had a balcony overlooking the lake. The two pools were right next to our room with the pool bar right there. One pool was family oriented and the other was 18 and older. Both closed at a reasonable hour so not to bother us at night. The restaurant on the property was pleasant. The menu was limited but we both loved the steak! There are also seafood and chicken options. The amenities were outstanding! They also have three other properties nearby where you can enjoy their amenities. There are lots of attractions nearby. I will be back to the Silver Birches soon!

Deck furniture dumped in a pile, not set up for our stay

We just returned from a really disappointing stay at Silver Birches. We booked "the Big House" at a hefty price tag of $3,000 for 3 nights over Memorial Day weekend. The condition of the house left a lot to be desired. Several of the blinds were broken in the DOWN position so we could not see the lake (we used rubber bands to try to tie them up again). Many of the window cranks were broken so the windows didn't open, and many of those that did open had missing or broken screens. (Why rent a lake house if you can't see the lake or open the windows?). Stains on the carpet, water marks on the ceiling, not enough flatware in the house to accommodate the 10 people the house sleeps, closet doors that were off track, deck furniture dumped in a pile and not set up for us, a grill that was so dirty it caught on fire when I tried to make dinner, broken furniture, nametags still stuck on doors I guess indicating assigned rooms for the previous renters??... I could go on - but the most upsetting part was the response from senior management. The manager on duty and the groundskeepers informed us that a group of college students had rented the house just before us and held a house party with more than 50 people sleeping over. They said the kids "destroyed" the house and Silver Birches wasn't able to address all of the issues before our stay. I told them that I understood their predicament but that I didn't think I should be expected to pay full price when the home was not in the condition it should be. The manager understood and called the CEO (COO?) to see what could be done. According to her, his response was, and I quote, "Absolutely not...things happen...there are no refunds or reimbursements." She reminded him of the house party and he said, "I will not take that into consideration." I'm sorry, what? Seriously? Other notes - communication around the place is problematic. When you call the "front desk" you are first directed to a call center not on the property and then bounced to the main desk (where frequently no one answers). When we called about the scheduled live music we were alternately told "it's happening outside now" (it wasn't); "there is no music scheduled this weekend" (there was); "it was canceled" (it wasn't); "it's been moved to the restaurant" (bingo). The one and only restaurant reservation we could get mysteriously disappeared from their books and I had to beg them to accommodate us on our final night. The place is dog-friendly and not all guests pick up after their dog so in addition to all the geese poop there's dog poop lying around too. If you are mobility-impaired and not staying at the Inn or the close-in cottages, you'll have a lot of trouble navigating the extremely steep hill b/c there are no pathways. The place boasts a lot of activities but heads' up that they own multiple properties and not all of the activities actually take place at Silver Birches. The sunset toast which was scheduled to happen never took place (I waited for it). Again, I could go on. It was just overall an (extremely costly) disappointment with a shockingly rude COO. On the positive side - beds, sheets, and towels were comfy. Paddleboards and kayaks were fun. View from the bar area was stunning. Too bad we couldn't really see it through the broken blinds from our overpriced lakefront house.

The Settlers Inn is a historic Arts & Craft Lodge that was built in Hawley, Pennsylvania in 1927…read more It was founded by local citizens in Hawley. Shortly after the completion of Lake Wallenpaupack (a man-made lake), local businessmen believed that tourists would come to see it and they raised funds to build a grand hotel known as the 'Hawley Community Hotel'. When the building was nearly finished, the stock market crashed and it sat empty for 20 years. It officially opened to the public in 1947 and went through several owners. It served as a nursing home, an inn, and even a private school. Since 1980, the inn has been owned and operated by hospitality experts Jeanne and Grant Genzlinger who dubbed it 'The Settlers Inn'. The on-site restaurant and Chestnut Tavern offer farm-to-table menus highlighting quality products of local farms and purveyors. Kate Woehrle is the current executive chef. The inn has been a member of Historic Hotels of America since 2010. My family and I recently visited The Settlers Inn while we were spending Memorial Day weekend in the Poconos. The timing of our visit coincided with their Memorial Day Brunch. The beautiful hotel had a spacious dining room that even featured live music from a piano player. To drink, I ordered the "Settlers Inn Bloody Mary" (blue cheese olives, alpine beef stick, aged cheddar, dilly beans, pepperoncini, celery). This was a great brunch cocktail! Our server brought us some delicious complimentary Brewer's Bread for the table. For the appetizer course, I had the "Smoked Trout Dip" and my wife had the "Black Pepper Ricotta Toast" (asparagus, cured egg yolk). We were both happy with our choices. For the entree course, I had the "Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict" (potato pancakes), my wife had the "Crispy Chicken Sammy" (coleslaw, brioche, roasted jalapeño aioli), and our son had the "Birthday Cake French Toast". Everything was excellent and tasted so fresh! For dessert, our server told us to help ourselves to the dessert table which featured fresh baked goods like cookies and cannoli. We had a fantastic brunch at the Settlers Inn and would definitely return on a future visit to the Poconos!

I booked our cabin stay through hotels.com. The following day I received a phone call from the resort asking me for the credit card information as hotels.com did not charge us directly. No big deal. When I initially booked the cabin I didn't do my research as I usually do and was freaked out when I read that a guest had bed bugs in their room. So naturally when I received the phone call from the resort it was the perfect time to ask if they have had or were recently experiencing any issues with bed bugs. The lady (I forgot her name) told me that they did have an issue but that they only had an issue because the guest that wrote the review about the room having bugs were the ones who had brought them. I wasn't sure how I felt about that, but I had planned an entire weekend, a holiday weekend at that so I decided to give it a go. Besides the lady was nice and kinda put my worries at ease. We arrived on a Friday evening. Maria checked us in and she was just as nice. Upon getting to our room "9A" we noticed there was no place to park. I called Maria to ask her where we could park and she said she would send someone to clear out our parking spot. It had snowed a few days before so there was a bit of snow still on the grounds. Within a few minutes someone was there clearing out our parking spot. The room itself was small but cozy. It seemed like nobody had been there in some time. The bathroom was a nice size and pretty clean. I immediately started looking for bed bugs but luckily didn't find any. Thank you Jesus! LOL My only complaints are these. One of the locks on the door was broken. There weren't any toiletries, not even a small bar of soap to bathe with. And lastly, although there were no bed bugs (thank you again Jesus) I found what looked like dead bug stains on the comforter. I would have liked to give them a three and a half rating but it wasn't possible so I gotta give them a three. All in all, we were happy with our stay. Employees were nice, room was decent, and the view was fascinating. We would definitely return, and we would definitely recommend.
