In town for a very short, intense, conference and stayed at nearby hotel. With no wheels and no energy for Ubering all over some town I'm not familiar with, I walked the couple of blocks to Spliffs for lunch and fell in love with a dirty hippie. No, wait, that's the name of the salad I had with some grilled chicken. Fresh, delicious, obviously made with love. At about 10 bucks, it was unbelievably good. Went back for dinner and tried the Shorty, a phyllo pocket of subtle bacon and shrimp deliciousness that came with a side of cucumber, tomato, and goat cheese salad that I would have happily eaten as an entree. Again, about $10. Despite the risk of looking like a complete stalker, I'd go back tomorrow for lunch if they were open. If the conference was longer, I'd eat my way through the entire menu. read more

Colleagues and I were looking for a place to get a beer and sandwich before heading to the airport. This place was great! It's a tiny place, but the beer selection was not (decent selection of locally brewed IPAs and lagers) and the menu was exactly what we were looking for. I am a vegetarian, so I ordered "The Dirty Hippie," which is a kitchen-sink-kinda-salad. I had them make it as a wrap. It was delicious! Super tasty. My Neon IPA was also really good...nice and cold, hoppy, and a perfect match for broccoli, cranberries, and whatever the hell else was in that wrap. :-) Thanks! read more

A hot spot in an ever growing area! I love that they support local artists by filling their walls with the arts of several different locals. The Spliff's pockets at Gastro are simply amazing! The only downside is no vegetarian or just seafood option in that category even though in general they do have many no-meat options. The apple dipping sauce was a perfect companion for the shrimp pocket, I was very surprised! The mac and cheese was ok but I suggest adding a little salt and pepper. Spliff's was a great place to grab a beer and a sandwich. Their on tap beer selection was great. I had the goat boy sandwich and it was delicious. I also had a side of Mac and Cheese which was tasty. You must have the habanero aioli with your sandwich if you like spicy food. I will definitely visit Spliffs once I visit Jacksonville again. read more

Love this place for lunch downtown -- really want to go for happy hour or drinks late night because of the awesome beer selection. The best thing on the menu are their versions of a fancy hot pocket -- so buttery and flakey -- service is great. This little Gem on Ocean St just north of Bay street is one to check out. Came in for a late lunch\early dinner of grilled chicken sandwich and a side of mac and cheese. While the grilled chicken was enough to stop for, the Mac and Cheese was to die for, which states on their menu is their speciality. It has a unique creamy texture that I'd have to walk into the kitchen and get the cheese mixture to tell u. Another great thing, hence the "Gastropub" name is the outstanding tap list that the staff has put together. I heard a lot about the mac an cheese at Spliffs. I decided to ordered it for dinner! I was disappointed about the food. The mac and cheese lacked cheese. I felt like I was eating macaroni without any cheese. I could make a better mac an cheese at home. I did enjoy the crunchiness of the bread crumbs, but ultimately felt like I paid $7 for macaroni (without cheese). The music was so loud I had to raise my voice to have a conversation. I am not sure why I hear such good things about their mac an cheese. I would recommend that you not order the mac and cheese unless you like macaroni without cheese...My friend ordered a sandwich. He said it tasted great, but was very small. We both felt portions were small and ended up actually getting a snack at another place.... Good idea for breadcrumbs in macaroni and nice decor...but would not come again. read more

We were down for Art Walk yesterday and a friend recommended we stop in at Spliff's, so we did and we're so glad we did! It was comfortable, the craft beer selection was great, the food delicious and the service was awesome. Very friendly staff. I just satisfied my week long craving for a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich! The BST came with bacon, spinach, tomato, Swiss and cheddar with a side of 3 cheese dipping sauce. For my side I delighted in a cup of cucumber, tomato, onion and goat cheese with a balsamic drizzle. OMG what an amazing dinner! I will be returning often! read more

Had a great time at Spliff's last night. They are a great little hole in the wall Gastropub that lives up to the name. Had lots of awesome food and there are over 20 taps of local and other great craft beers. It is also well placed right next to the new Chop House downtown. Parking is the only limitation, but if your a good downtowner that is really not an issue. Will be making this a new regular stop. Once they open the back patio that they are renovating this will really open up the place. read more

Visiting JAX and Yelp'd this place. Looked good. It's a cool little hole in the wall that I probably wouldn't have chosen, but I was dining alone, in the mood for casual and they were playing Pink Floyd Animals when I walked in. Seriously. The guy behind the counter was great - in a local, greet you and cut to the chase kind of way. Once I figured out the program, I was good. The beer taps, detailed on a board, are extensive - unfortunately of the approx 22 taps available, about 7 were not filled out and at least one "blew." As the owner, who showed up while I was there, explained, with their limited space, a busy weekend and delivery not until Wednesday, sometime that happens. The place quickly filled up, as I learned, because of a show downtown. There was a steady little rush which led to some lag time with food and drinks, but they managed - and the owner stepped in to catch them up. My sandwich was really good, and the Mac-n-Cheese side was decent, although could have been hotter and a little more melty. Overall I give it a solid 4 stars. Small, local, and great potential. As I was told, a patio out back connects their venues, as the owner has a place next door that features musical acts. I'd come back, but probably not this trip. read more

We do not visit downtown Jackson frequently so I really wanted to like this place but I am sad to say that my husband and I had a horrible customer experience. I would NEVER go back! The bartenders seemed irritated and asked me "if I was from around there". Seriously, just jerks. One of them even proceeded to "school" me and tell me it was rude for me to speak while he was speaking. My wife and I decided to walk on a really nice night. Arrived at 7:00 and the place had a nice vibe. The menu looks really good and I can appreciate the super detailed food descriptions. Unfortunately the kitchen didn't deliver on the menu's expectations. (I have to be honest here and disclose that my review is probably biased from the unbelievably loud and obnoxious table that was clearly annoying everyone in the establishment)The number one issue other than noise was bread quality. The pork sliders were really just a hoagie roll cut in half and the grilled cheese was just ok. The Mac and cheese was pretty on point but, for the amount of time it took to prepare and the price I kind of expected a lot more overall. I also have to say more about the noise. It wasn't just the obnoxiously loud guy. The restaurant kept turning up the music to drown the guy out which would make him scream even louder. When I say scream, I mean that he was literally screaming at full volume. We actually had to leave before we finished. read more

There was maybe 2 or 3 other patrons. So it wasn't busy. But the bartenders seemed like they couldn't care less if we were there or not. No real smile and when we asked about what is good on the menu, she had no real recommendations. And sounded like she wasn't trying to sell me on anything. We ordered something to eat that was forgettable. And the mac & cheese tasted old and gritty. Not going to be running back to this place. Stopped into Spliffs last night. We found the decor to be very pleasing. Very much liked the interior walls which are the original brick. So, onto the staff, very nice, very helpful. Mo one of the managers of the restaurant came to the table to ask how everything was and to ensure that we had a great experience. The menu is nothing like you have seen before. Very very tasty sandwiches, they also have hot pocket type of sandwiches. The sides are to kill for. Only suggestion I could make would be to offer some of the sandwiches as Paninni's. Great atmosphere, great food, terrific dining experience. I will be sure to tell my friends and business associates to stop in and try this great restaurant. read more

Excellent Mac and cheese creations they are a specialty and deservedly so. Small place with limited seating. Great selection of beers on tap. We were there on a Sunday night- there is a music hall right next to this place and it was Screamo night apparently so that out-blasted the modern hip hop that was playing in this place. read more
