I went to Spinneys after my Mainer friend told me I didn't have a choice - it was a requirement when she visited Popham Beach. Glad I didn't read the reviews prior to our day trip, or I would have been scared off. We ate on the patio where I ate my third lobster in as many days. Perfectly delicious. The view was incredible, as was our service. Our server was very amiable, helpful, and fast. It was here that I ate an entire bowl of sweet, plump, winy mussels for lunch. But that's not all. I also had a grilled blueberry muffin (yes, you heard me right) and it was ridiculously good -- Maine blueberries are tiny but very intense and manage to stay round even as you bake them. Took a break from Popham Beach to run to Spinney's for takeout. Since it was early June, I think that they were still gearing up for the summer crowds. Took a long time, to get service at the take-out window, although many staff passed by and said hello - must be one of those places with certain jobs assigned, instead of all pitching in for the customer. There were two seperate people who came in for take-out after I ordered and they waited for service and finally just left. We ordered for 8 people so it took awhile - no real complaint there. The food was well packed in to-go boxes and the waitress made sure that we had all condiments, sauces, napkins, etc. The food was good - pretty basic beach front food. It is fairly pricey - but again that's what you expect at the beach. Overall, if I am ever in the area again, I would eat here (there is not many other options anyway)...it certainly does the job. read more

A day at Popham Beach wouldn't be complete without a bunch of food from Spinney's! Our crew ordered up two lobster rolls, a chicken strips platter, some fried calamari, onion rings and a bunch of other stuff I'm forgetting. Instead of eating at the restaurant, we got take-out, but by the time our food was ready, we'd finished our beverages. Pulling up I thought is was one of those weekender baby-bommer biker bars, but it is actually a very nice place with very good food. We had dinner and breakfast there, and both were great and in a great beachy but not too Jimmy Buffety environment. The staff was great too, with very nice servers. The owners of the rental units next door (and who own this place I think) are pretty creepy as they walk around the parking lot smoking cigarettes and looking like transplanted trailer park managers from Florida, but the natural environment, beach, and Fort Popum a few steps away were incredible to explore. This place was OK. The steamers and lobster were good, but the sides were mediocre. I got the cottage cheese and cole slaw and the cottage cheese was a little warm and the cole slaw wasn't that good. The bread roll they give was weird tasting and the clam chowder was very runny, not creamy like it usually is other places. The ribeye steak was real greasy, had to wipe the grease off the plate with a napkin before eating the steak. The best part was the lobster and when I go back that's about all I will get here. The alcohol is expensive, 2 drinks cost more than my meal! The seafood stuffed mushroom appetizer was a little strange too. Can't pinpoint it but all in all, my tummy was a little upset later on after the meal. Besides the lobster and the view, I wouldn't go back. Ate there last night. Had the 1 1/2 pound lobster special for $24.95 with 2 sides. It was more than enough and very good. Had a reasonably priced bottle of Chardonnay and blueberry pie ala-mode to top it off . One of the best meals we have had while vacationing in Maine and the service was excellent (Savannah). We will be here long enough to return and enjoy another meal as well as watch the sights as strollers walk by on the beach. Give it a try - you won't be disappointed. read more

Always wanted to go here. Boy was I disappointed. Lobster stew (bowl) was luke-warm at best. Not even close to hot, very watered down and hardly had any actual lobster in it. Expected more considering we were literally on the coast. I've had much better inland. Was very disappointed. Placemat at my seat was dirty with ketchup from previous guests. Waitress was awful. Almost spilled the bowl of soup all over me. She was not at all attentive. We had to flag her down repeatedly to request drink refills. When we finally got our food she disappeared again and never came back to ask how it was or if we needed anything. The French fries tasted like they came from a frozen Hannaford brand bag and the cole slaw was very bland. After getting our food, one person tried to catch her attention by raising his hand every time she glanced our way and she didn't even notice. She was talking to a friend about how we were the only table she had, and she was sitting in the dining area scarfing down a bowl of pasta while we sat there trying to get her attention so that we could get something as simple as condiments. When someone had to speak up and say "excuse me???" she finally noticed us she laughed and joked that she was eating along with us. Not funny. When she came back with the condiments we requested, she placed mine on the table with her back to me and didn't even make eye contact. What is someone like this doing with a waitressing job is beyond me. You could have had a great table and some amazing tips but apparently we didn't appear to be worth her time. Had no problem parking and getting yelled at because we went right in the restaurant. Was taken to the back corner of the side room, and asked if it was okay as it was quite warm. We said no problem and sat. Lots of flies on the windows, even some wasps, but the doors are open constantly, so you expect that. Noticed the four ceiling fans were not turned on and thought that is strange, especially when they apologized for the heat! Noticed other people get their lunches, saw a couple get seated, sample some beer, order beer, get it served, and order their lunch. You might notice I haven't mentioned anything about our service. We were never served! Never even acknowledged by the three or four waitress and waiter that went by. Finally gave up after twenty minutes and left! Told the woman seating us that apparently there is no one waiting on the got table way in the back of the side room! We left, drove all the way up to the Sea Basket were we had a great meal! read more

We called ahead to order, and were told to call back in 5 minutes as they we busy. Called back, and were told it would be a few minutes before our order could be taken. Sat on the phone waiting for 10 minutes, while at least one person in the background stated "I'm not taking the order, the people in here are more important." So we drove down the road and waited ten minutes at the take out counter to place an order. Placed our order, came back after the 45 minutes we were told it would take. We got an order or buffalo tenders (pictured) that were small, broken and cold. We also got a Popham Platter (also pictured) for $27 dollars and got a very small amount of food, maybe half of what we get when we dine in. The french fries were stale, there were only two scallops and a very small piece of fish, all of which was lukewarm. If you have the option, go to Percy's that's literally next door. My only complaint was that the Bloody Mary was priced on the menu for $5.95 and when we were charged $7.50 each, the waitress said the menu price was for "a small Bloody Mary" which I never heard of... My cousin had a gift certificate for this restaurant. The waitress / hostess were very nice and welcoming. The coffee was delicious. I was bummed that at 11:00 a.m. they had stopped serving breakfast. As a vegetarian, eating that way in Maine was a little difficult. Almost everything had some form of animal in it. I opted for a grilled cheese with tomato and fries. The grilled cheese was okay. Nothing spectacular. The fries were okay too. ABUSE at SPINNEYS!! I ate at this restaurant last night. There seemed to be just four waitresses for the entire building of people, the kitchen was backed-up. There is one in particular that I would like to talk about, even though she wasn't mine! (I'm a huge people-watcher.) This young girl (maybe 20?) was vibrant, inviting, and FULL of ENERGY!! She was serving the table near mine, which was actually ten people at two tables with two different checks (and members from each party at both the tables, to boot!!). The girl greeted them and asked what they would like for drinks, and she came back with them IMMEDIATELY. (That table got their drinks before I got mine, and we were smaller AND there before them!) She apologized for the wait and took their orders. It was fifteen minutes later, when she stopped to ask how they were doing with the wait, that they started being RUDE. The woman at the head of the table told her that it wasn't her fault, but that she should pass the message on to the kitchen that the service was mediocre and they were starving. I watched that little waitress try explaining that everything is made-to-order, but these people CLEARLY wanted FAST FOOD!! When she offered dinner rolls, they said yes, but they declined salad until their meals were ready. Fifteen minutes later, when the girl checked again (impressive considering her table load) the woman at the head of the table EMPHASIZED that she was STARVING and told her they wanted their salads, so the girl ran to grab them. A couple minutes later, though, she returned with a (VERY LARGE!!) tray of food for their table, followed by TWO MORE!! No one helped her carry out the trays, and the group seemed upset that she hadn't brought it out all at once. (I'm SORRY!! How many arms does a human have??) Then, when the girl had given everyone their meals and said she would be returning with the salads, the woman ANGRILY asked her what had happened to them! She pointed out the owner and asked to speak with her, despite the girl trying to explain that she had to prepare the salads, and when the hot food was called, she figured it took "priority". The waitress kept a smile on anyway and said that yes, it was the owner, and yes, that she was sure she would be happy to talk about the situation. (The man at the table seemed upset at this, so kudos to him for not being a jerk.) When the waitress came back just a few minutes later to make sure things were OK, the woman told her they were also tired of waiting for another round of drinks, which they hadn't ordered from her (I think the owner bought that one). When the little girl (I say little because I'm OLD!!) checked in again after dropping off drinks, the table practically ignored her, and at the end, when they received their checks, they asked if she was even a waitress!! HOW RUDE IS THAT!?!? The woman told the owner she also has a restaurant and that the service was poor, and the owner told the woman that the waitress wasn't used to working nights (which is a BULLSHIT COVER UP to PACIFY a SHIT PERSON WITH A CONTROL PROBLEM!! Unimpressed with the owner here.) They scoffed at her when she told them that she actually was a waitress and that it wasn't her first shift, and they told her that's not what they had been told. The girl smiled and apologized for the time it took to have their food out of the kitchen, telling them she hoped they had a wonderful night. They said "yeah," then loudly proclaimed that they weren't leaving a tip when she walked away, and left. (Most of the people from their party had left at this point. I was hanging around because I wanted to see the end of this.) That poor little girl left that table CRYING at what was CLEARLY ABUSE!! Although she was careful not to let them (or her other tables, which were back-to) see. When she came out, she was still smiling, and she even answered calls for water at a table that (I think) wasn't hers. I LEFT praying to GOD!! that someone hugged that poor little waitress! Since GOD actually recognizes waitresses as HUMANS!! unlike that WOMAN!! She did an AMAZING job and SMILED when I would have PUNCHED someone!! Even though it seems as though the OWNER will say ANYTHING to pacify a MEAN, ENTITLED CUSTOMER!! And she should have STOOD UP for her WAITRESS! I'm giving THIS restaurant FIVE STARS! because that sweet little waitress was the EPITOME of INCREDIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!! I WILL eat at Spinneys again, because the food is GREAT and I've been coming SINCE I was a CHILD, but HOPEFULLY there won't be an INCREDIBLY OBNOXIOUS, IMPOSSIBLE to PLEASE, STONE-HEARTED woman ruining the atmosphere!!!! I've been eating at Spinney's for years. My grandparents started the tradition of summering at Popham, oh, about 50 years ago and Spinney's has been around the whole time. I've seen the place through different owners and I've stayed at their guest house/cabins. I must say, Glen & Diane (the current owners) have done a great job with the place. Improvements have been made in the quality of the food, it's nice that they've expanded the dining area, the bar has been an interesting addition, and I like that they have a retail counter (it's especially handy for those of us who stay there longish-term & don't want to drive the 14mi in to town). I took my parents there last night for dinner. Dad had the shrimp & scallop scampi ("definitely the best meal I've ever had here!"), Mom had the baked scallops ("oh, they're so sweet right now! and cooked just right!"), and I had the Popham Platter, which is basically a fisherman's platter. The batter was light and tasty with a little zing to it that I can't recall ever having had there before. It was a nice addition! (Popham Platter= fried scallops, whole clams, shrimp, haddock plus their delicious french fries.) Service was quick but our waitress was very chatty, which was distracting. I've been coming here long enough that I knew the staff; it seems they have all left/been let go, and the new crew is a little disorienting. Glen, Diane- please, for the love of all that is good and holy, would you PLEASE do something about the gigantic spiders that lurk obtrusively in the sliding glass doors/windows at the beach side of the restaurant? This place has gone way downhill over the years. Most recently, the chef was feuding with our waitress and refused to give her all of her orders. We waited over an hour for the two cups of chowder we ordered. Not a way to run a business. Do yourself a favor and go to Percy's around the corner! Fresh seafood, made to order with a beautiful view at the mouth of the kennebec! I'm a big fan of the clam chowder and the wood island wreak. The Popham Platter is a remarkable fried seafood platter my husband and I like to split each year. If you have a lighter appetite, many options are available at half price for half the portion, which is still a great size! I read all the mixed reviews and we decided to eat here anyway. What were you all expecting? The food was good, the prices were reasonable AND the nearly 360 degree views just made everything better. The half size seafood platter was still enormous - for $10! The sights and sounds from other tables all seemed positive as well, plus they were all very friendly in there. We just left Spinney's after waiting for an hour on their patio amidst uncleared tables with napkins blowing onto the beach. After finally getting seated, we sat for another 20 min waiting for a server. Finally a waitress appeared and took the order for the party that had just been seated next to us! Hence, we walked out hungry. So frustrating and the worst restaurant experience ever! With so few choices in the area you would think they'd get their shit together, but perhaps they don't pay their staff enough. We decided to go to Spinney's since the only other choice in the area is Lobster House which I highly recommend. Came to this little corner of coastal Maine to see the beach. We enjoyed the water and the Fort but wanted a quick bite to eat before we continued our journey up the coast. Debated between giving 3 stars, but finally landed on two. We were a party of 4 and ordered the following: cup of lobster stew, fried clams, reuben sandwich, hamburger and lobster tail (nothing too time consuming, but it took almost 40 min to get our food). It was very disappointing that 2 other parties who came after us were served before we were. I have to blame the waitress because she was pretty much non-existent throughout our visit. We saw 2 other servers several times taking care of their parties, but our waitress just couldn't seem to be found. Our food arrived and for the most of us, it was pretty good. The reuben was very good and the lobster was great. The other items were just so-so. This is a convenient place if you've been to the fort or beach and that's why we stopped. One of my favorite places to go to every time I go to Maine. The food is both inexpensive and delicious, although the wait is a little long depending on how busy the place is. Spinney's has both fantastic breakfast and lunch/dinner food, plus the views you get looking out toward the ocean are incredible! It's also just a short walk away from historic Fort Popham, and just a minute's drive from Popham Beach. If you ever find yourself at either of these places, stop for lunch at Spinney's! read more

Wicked fresh seafood, fried in a light batter or broiled fish. Prime rib was available the Sat. night we went in. Chowder looks good, not too thick, but meaty. Don't expect a pretentious meal, this place probably does 7 or 8 times as much in take out. But as a value for price place, this is probably as good as it gets in coastal Maine. Very good cole slaw, but not much of it, my only complaint. I'm sure you can have a less than stellar experience here, but ours was authentic, delicious and fresh. read more

My wife and I went there for supper. We had to wait just about one hour. The hostess didn't have a clue. She told us it will be ten minutes ha ha. So we asked if we could grab a drink and sit outside. I thought they forgot us. When we walked in there had to have at least 6 or 7 tables empty. We finally got sat. Took another ten to fifteen minutes for a waitress to come over. We ordered our drinks and or meal together so our salad comes out but no rolls. Then we sit at a corner table because the other smaller ones are not cleaned, and he says "do we need the big table?" and we walked out. Screw you and your attitude.
