I went to Spinneys after my Mainer friend told me I didn't have a choice - it was a requirement when she visited Popham Beach. Glad I didn't read the reviews prior to our day trip, or I would have been scared off. We ate on the patio where I ate my third lobster in as many days. Perfectly delicious. The view was incredible, as was our service. Our server was very amiable, helpful, and fast. It was an overall enjoyable experience and I would definitely try it again next time I'm at Popham Beach. read more

I've always been told to visit Spinney's when in the Popham Beach area, but this is the first time I've ever actually made it. Unfortunately, it was not worth the wait. The lobster stew was okay, but my daughter's salad had one of those paper silverware wrappers discarded under the salad -- as if it had already visited a previous table. When her lobster arrived (and we get lobster all over Maine every summer), it came with a cup of butter that was literally 1/8 inch full. When we asked for more, we were told it would be an extra charge -- and we received another tablespoon (literally ONE TABLESPOON) of melted butter. Add to that what appeared to be a black pubic hair on the lid of my tartar sauce, and I was ready to go. Sadly, I will stick to the Lobsterman's Wharf in Boothbay, or The Lobster Shack in Cape Elizabeth from now on. read more

I had a positive experience at Spinney's. My wife and I came here for lunch at around 1:30pm on a day where it was supposed to rain later on. We decided to take a drive up to Pompham before the rain, and we're glad we did. I can imagine it probably gets very busy at Spinney's during the summer on popular days. We were fortunate in that we arrived, took our take out order, waited 10-15 minutes, and had our food ready to go. Very quick service. Shout out to the gentleman with curly hair working the take out counter. He was super friendly and has excellent customer service skills, delivering our food to the table we were sitting at. The restaurant itself looked clean and trendy. This spot's location has beautiful ocean views and with Fort Pompham such a short distance away, it's a convenient place to order take out and picnic by the ocean. I enjoyed my sandwich and my wife says her haddock sandwich was "on point" although she also wished it came with tartar sauce. Lastly, we are huge animal lovers and liked meeting the resident orange tabby kitty that must be living the best beach life. read more

Spinneys Restaurant & Lodging - Seafood Near Me - Phippsburg, Maine

This place is a classic lobster shanty off the beaten path downeast. The setting, about a mile from Popham Beach, makes this a perfect apres-beach beer and seafood stop. Nothing extraordinary except views of the Kennebec estuary and the ruins of a Civil War era fort guarding the river's path inland. But the setting alone is enough to earn 4 stars. An historic visitor to the area felt he personally deserved more stars. Benedict Arnold and his men passed directly by this site in the late 1770s, eager to find a shortcut to Canada via the Kennebec, intending to surprise the Brits at Quebec. Underestimating the distance and terrain, the inland route proved difficult and many were lost in an heroic winter slog thru the Maine woods. Arnold and less than half his men arrived at Montreal and attacked, and the Brits barely held. Arnold retreated down lake Champlain, and eventually led the day in a stunning upset at Ticonderoga. The Continental Congress failed to recognize this and other remarkable Arnold feats of the war, passing him over for the promotion he coveted, to which the vainglorious Arnold responded with his infamous treason. Historians agree that Arnold's expedition was perhaps the boldest campaign of the revolution, and had he succeeded, would have changed the course of history. Canada might well be part of the US today. Others claim that had Spinney's been there, Arnold would have retired to a summer cottage nearby. Cheers! read more

Was up visiting from Ohio. We were looking for good Maine cuisine and seafood. We had heard from locals that Spinney's was really good. I'd have to say they were off. The service from our server was mediocre at best (seemed like we were a bother to him, cant recall his name but he had a pony tail). Seemed like everyother thing we asked about they were out of. The food itself seemed average and about the same as what I could get back home. Won't be recommending this spot. read more

It was here that I ate an entire bowl of sweet, plump, winy mussels for lunch. But that's not all. I also had a grilled blueberry muffin (yes, you heard me right) and it was ridiculously good -- Maine blueberries are tiny but very intense and manage to stay round even as you bake them. The bites of blueberry pie I stole from my fiance's plate were awesome too. Spinney's is located right on the water... I didn't see any puffins, but I did see a seal and an old dude furiously scanning his metal detector across the surf. I love Maine! read more

Took a break from Popham Beach to run to Spinney's for takeout. Since it was early June, I think that they were still gearing up for the summer crowds. Took a long time, to get service at the take-out window, although many staff passed by and said hello - must be one of those places with certain jobs assigned, instead of all pitching in for the customer. There were two seperate people who came in for take-out after I ordered and they waited for service and finally just left. We ordered for 8 people so it took awhile - no real complaint there. The food was well packed in to-go boxes and the waitress made sure that we had all condiments, sauces, napkins, etc. The food was good - pretty basic beach front food. It is fairly pricey - but again that's what you expect at the beach. Overall, if I am ever in the area again, I would eat here (there is not many other options anyway)...it certainly does the job. read more

Had been here years ago with friends who have a summer place near by. Asked to go back when we visited the same friends last week. The location is lovely but everything else is mediocre. They still had the old spinners menu up on line so I was sad to see the vastly reduced menu. The service was comically bad. When we arrived the hostess ignore us even though the place was nearly full. I went up to her to ask to be seated and she said she'd seat us at the time of our reservation. Our young server was sweet but forgot my friends drink order and main course (we'd both ordered the same thing f but only one got ours; can't get count heads at the table and realized that there was one too few entrees). When we asked a different server for my friend's drink, he promptly brought it to her bus when my friend thanked her he said "I've added it to your bill". When we asked a female server for more water she huffed as if we imposed on her. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. The best part was the Brussels sprouts. My lobster roll was fine but mostly tasteless. My husbands fish sandwich and my friends husbands fish taco were also just okay. Won't ask to go back here again. read more

A day at Popham Beach wouldn't be complete without a bunch of food from Spinney's! Our crew ordered up two lobster rolls, a chicken strips platter, some fried calamari, onion rings and a bunch of other stuff I'm forgetting. Instead of eating at the restaurant, we got take-out, but by the time our food was ready, we'd finished our beverages. And this is on top of waiting forever for the people in line before us to place their orders. Spinney's, I like the food, but the pace is kind of slow for my taste. read more

The view and ambiance alone is worth 5 stars. The food is good,it's exactly what you would expect at a local beach seafood joint. Id go back in a heartbeat. How can you give this place a bad review? I get they get annoyed when people park in their lot. It's small and next to a beach. But it's a great spot. read more

This place was OK. The steamers and lobster were good, but the sides were mediocre. I got the cottage cheese and cole slaw and the cottage cheese was a little warm and the cole slaw wasn't that good. The bread roll they give was weird tasting and the clam chowder was very runny, not creamy like it usually is other places. The ribeye steak was real greasy, had to wipe the grease off the plate with a napkin before eating the steak. The best part was the lobster and when I go back that's about all I will get here. The alcohol is expensive, 2 drinks cost more than my meal! The seafood stuffed mushroom appetizer was a little strange too. Can't pinpoint it but all in all, my tummy was a little upset later on after the meal. Besides the lobster and the view, I wouldn't go back. The staff was very nice though, very accommodating. read more

Ate there last night. Had the 1 1/2 pound lobster special for $24.95 with 2 sides. It was more than enough and very good. Had a reasonably priced bottle of Chardonnay and blueberry pie ala-mode to top it off . One of the best meals we have had while vacationing in Maine and the service was excellent (Savannah). We will be here long enough to return and enjoy another meal as well as watch the sights as strollers walk by on the beach. Give it a try - you won't be disappointed. read more

Pulling up I thought is was one of those weekender baby-bommer biker bars, but it is actually a very nice place with very good food. We had dinner and breakfast there, and both were great and in a great beachy but not too Jimmy Buffety environment. The staff was great too, with very nice servers. The owners of the rental units next door (and who own this place I think) are pretty creepy as they walk around the parking lot smoking cigarettes and looking like transplanted trailer park managers from Florida, but the natural environment, beach, and Fort Popum a few steps away were incredible to explore. Also a beautiful drive from Bath, which is a nice town. read more

Went with my sister to celebrate Mother's Day in memory of our mom she loved Popham beach as we all did, my sister had the seafood platter & I had the baked stuffed lobster I also had haddock chowder & my sister had clam chowder both were very good! Had a yummy breakfast (the hash) at a really decent price. My only complaint was that the Bloody Mary was priced on the menu for $5.95 and when we were charged $7.50 each, the waitress said the menu price was for "a small Bloody Mary" which I never heard of... I just thought that it was weird that we weren't offered the menu price even after we brought it up, but what's a few dollars I guess. read more

Always wanted to go here. Boy was I disappointed. Lobster stew (bowl) was luke-warm at best. Not even close to hot, very watered down and hardly had any actual lobster in it. Expected more considering we were literally on the coast. I've had much better inland. Was very disappointed. Placemat at my seat was dirty with ketchup from previous guests. Waitress was awful. Almost spilled the bowl of soup all over me. She was not at all attentive. We had to flag her down repeatedly to request drink refills. When we finally got our food she disappeared again and never came back to ask how it was or if we needed anything. The French fries tasted like they came from a frozen Hannaford brand bag and the cole slaw was very bland. After getting our food, one person tried to catch her attention by raising his hand every time she glanced our way and she didn't even notice. She was talking to a friend about how we were the only table she had, and she was sitting in the dining area scarfing down a bowl of pasta while we sat there trying to get her attention so that we could get something as simple as condiments. When someone had to speak up and say "excuse me???" she finally noticed us she laughed and joked that she was eating along with us. Not funny. When she came back with the condiments we requested, she placed mine on the table with her back to me and didn't even make eye contact. What is someone like this doing with a waitressing job is beyond me. You could have had a great table and some amazing tips but apparently we didn't appear to be worth her time. Would not go back and would not recommend. read more

Had no problem parking and getting yelled at because we went right in the restaurant. Was taken to the back corner of the side room, and asked if it was okay as it was quite warm. We said no problem and sat. Lots of flies on the windows, even some wasps, but the doors are open constantly, so you expect that. Noticed the four ceiling fans were not turned on and thought that is strange, especially when they apologized for the heat! Noticed other people get their lunches, saw a couple get seated, sample some beer, order beer, get it served, and order their lunch. You might notice I haven't mentioned anything about our service. We were never served! Never even acknowledged by the three or four waitress and waiter that went by. Finally gave up after twenty minutes and left! Told the woman seating us that apparently there is no one waiting on the got table way in the back of the side room! We left, drove all the way up to the Sea Basket were we had a great meal! read more

We called ahead to order, and were told to call back in 5 minutes as they we busy. Called back, and were told it would be a few minutes before our order could be taken. Sat on the phone waiting for 10 minutes, while at least one person in the background stated "I'm not taking the order, the people in here are more important." So we drove down the road and waited ten minutes at the take out counter to place an order. Placed our order, came back after the 45 minutes we were told it would take. We got an order or buffalo tenders (pictured) that were small, broken and cold. We also got a Popham Platter (also pictured) for $27 dollars and got a very small amount of food, maybe half of what we get when we dine in. The french fries were stale, there were only two scallops and a very small piece of fish, all of which was lukewarm. If you have the option, go to Percy's that's literally next door. Better food and MUCH better service. read more

Service was terrible and the food was mediocre at best. That's really all you need to know.

The food was excellent and I'm only giving it three stars because they got our order wrong, took forever, and were pissy about it. Fresh haddock sandwiches were very fresh and the onion rings were terrific. A good location on the water means you can eat in with a view or take out and sit on the beach. read more

ABUSE at SPINNEYS!! I ate at this restaurant last night. There seemed to be just four waitresses for the entire building of people, the kitchen was backed-up. There is one in particular that I would like to talk about, even though she wasn't mine! (I'm a huge people-watcher.) This young girl (maybe 20?) was vibrant, inviting, and FULL of ENERGY!! She was serving the table near mine, which was actually ten people at two tables with two different checks (and members from each party at both the tables, to boot!!). The girl greeted them and asked what they would like for drinks, and she came back with them IMMEDIATELY. (That table got their drinks before I got mine, and we were smaller AND there before them!) She apologized for the wait and took their orders. It was fifteen minutes later, when she stopped to ask how they were doing with the wait, that they started being RUDE. The woman at the head of the table told her that it wasn't her fault, but that she should pass the message on to the kitchen that the service was mediocre and they were starving. I watched that little waitress try explaining that everything is made-to-order, but these people CLEARLY wanted FAST FOOD!! When she offered dinner rolls, they said yes, but they declined salad until their meals were ready. Fifteen minutes later, when the girl checked again (impressive considering her table load) the woman at the head of the table EMPHASIZED that she was STARVING and told her they wanted their salads, so the girl ran to grab them. A couple minutes later, though, she returned with a (VERY LARGE!!) tray of food for their table, followed by TWO MORE!! No one helped her carry out the trays, and the group seemed upset that she hadn't brought it out all at once. (I'm SORRY!! How many arms does a human have??) Then, when the girl had given everyone their meals and said she would be returning with the salads, the woman ANGRILY asked her what had happened to them! She pointed out the owner and asked to speak with her, despite the girl trying to explain that she had to prepare the salads, and when the hot food was called, she figured it took "priority". The waitress kept a smile on anyway and said that yes, it was the owner, and yes, that she was sure she would be happy to talk about the situation. (The man at the table seemed upset at this, so kudos to him for not being a jerk.) When the waitress came back just a few minutes later to make sure things were OK, the woman told her they were also tired of waiting for another round of drinks, which they hadn't ordered from her (I think the owner bought that one). When the little girl (I say little because I'm OLD!!) checked in again after dropping off drinks, the table practically ignored her, and at the end, when they received their checks, they asked if she was even a waitress!! HOW RUDE IS THAT!?!? The woman told the owner she also has a restaurant and that the service was poor, and the owner told the woman that the waitress wasn't used to working nights (which is a BULLSHIT COVER UP to PACIFY a SHIT PERSON WITH A CONTROL PROBLEM!! Unimpressed with the owner here.) They scoffed at her when she told them that she actually was a waitress and that it wasn't her first shift, and they told her that's not what they had been told. The girl smiled and apologized for the time it took to have their food out of the kitchen, telling them she hoped they had a wonderful night. They said "yeah," then loudly proclaimed that they weren't leaving a tip when she walked away, and left. (Most of the people from their party had left at this point. I was hanging around because I wanted to see the end of this.) That poor little girl left that table CRYING at what was CLEARLY ABUSE!! Although she was careful not to let them (or her other tables, which were back-to) see. When she came out, she was still smiling, and she even answered calls for water at a table that (I think) wasn't hers. I LEFT praying to GOD!! that someone hugged that poor little waitress! Since GOD actually recognizes waitresses as HUMANS!! unlike that WOMAN!! She did an AMAZING job and SMILED when I would have PUNCHED someone!! Even though it seems as though the OWNER will say ANYTHING to pacify a MEAN, ENTITLED CUSTOMER!! And she should have STOOD UP for her WAITRESS! I'm giving THIS restaurant FIVE STARS! because that sweet little waitress was the EPITOME of INCREDIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!! I WILL eat at Spinneys again, because the food is GREAT and I've been coming SINCE I was a CHILD, but HOPEFULLY there won't be an INCREDIBLY OBNOXIOUS, IMPOSSIBLE to PLEASE, STONE-HEARTED woman ruining the atmosphere!!!! Because if that's what the customers at spinney's are now like, I CERTAINLY won't enjoy eating here again! read more

My cousin had a gift certificate for this restaurant. The waitress / hostess were very nice and welcoming. The coffee was delicious. I was bummed that at 11:00 a.m. they had stopped serving breakfast. As a vegetarian, eating that way in Maine was a little difficult. Almost everything had some form of animal in it. I opted for a grilled cheese with tomato and fries. The grilled cheese was okay. Nothing spectacular. The fries were okay too. Our food took forever because my cousin got a steak, and they overcooked it. (He asked for medium and it was practically well done). read more

We ordered the Salty Steamer, sandwiches, and lobster stew. The portions were shockingly scanty. When we opened the steamer we both went wow...really? Three little pieces of lobster claw, a very small piece of calamri. The stew had hardly any lobster in it. I get it...there aren't many restaurants around, but we have a car so we will and can go elsewhere. Not worth it in the least. Gave it 2 stars because what food we did receive tasted good, but it didn't hold us for dinner. read more

This place has gone way downhill over the years. Most recently, the chef was feuding with our waitress and refused to give her all of her orders. They keep getting better and better while Spinney's gets worse and worse every year. read more

Fresh seafood, made to order with a beautiful view at the mouth of the kennebec! I'm a big fan of the clam chowder and the wood island wreak. The Popham Platter is a remarkable fried seafood platter my husband and I like to split each year. They also make an excellent steak and cheese if seafood isn't your thing, make sure to get the onion rings!! read more

I read all the mixed reviews and we decided to eat here anyway. What were you all expecting? The food was good, the prices were reasonable AND the nearly 360 degree views just made everything better. Came to this little corner of coastal Maine to see the beach. We enjoyed the water and the Fort but wanted a quick bite to eat before we continued our journey up the coast. Spinney's was the only place available. Small, seasonal, and family owned, it was just fine. Nothing out of the ordinary but good. I had the fried clam roll and the husband a sandwich. Had rehearsal dinner here. Fantastic New England clambake. Food was outstanding, as were Glenn and staff. Highly recommended.

One of my favorite places to go to every time I go to Maine. The food is both inexpensive and delicious, although the wait is a little long depending on how busy the place is. Spinney's has both fantastic breakfast and lunch/dinner food, plus the views you get looking out toward the ocean are incredible! It's also just a short walk away from historic Fort Popham, and just a minute's drive from Popham Beach. If you ever find yourself at either of these places, stop for lunch at Spinney's! read more

Great little spot, I was there on memorial day. We were greeted at the door with a friendly smile by Savannah who was also our waitress. Debated between giving 3 stars, but finally landed on two. We were a party of 4 and ordered the following: cup of lobster stew, fried clams, reuben sandwich, hamburger and lobster tail (nothing too time consuming, but it took almost 40 min to get our food). It was very disappointing that 2 other parties who came after us were served before we were. I have to blame the waitress because she was pretty much non-existent throughout our visit. We saw 2 other servers several times taking care of their parties, but our waitress just couldn't seem to be found. Our food arrived and for the most of us, it was pretty good. The reuben was very good and the lobster was great. The other items were just so-so. This is a convenient place if you've been to the fort or beach and that's why we stopped. If in the area again, we'd find someplace else to eat. read more

We just left Spinney's after waiting for an hour on their patio amidst uncleared tables with napkins blowing onto the beach. After finally getting seated, we sat for another 20 min waiting for a server. Finally a waitress appeared and took the order for the party that had just been seated next to us! Hence, we walked out hungry. So frustrating and the worst restaurant experience ever! With so few choices in the area you would think they'd get their shit together, but perhaps they don't pay their staff enough. We decided to go to Spinney's since the only other choice in the area is Lobster House which I highly recommend. We went there twice in the week we were vacationing and just wanted to go someplace different. Bad idea...screw Spinney's!!! read more

Wicked fresh seafood, fried in a light batter or broiled fish. Prime rib was available the Sat. night we went in. Chowder looks good, not too thick, but meaty.
