We were looking forward to eating at the newly reopened Spinney's and we are so glad we did! From the friendly staff to the streamlined and updated menu, plus the beer selection, we were not disappointed. Fish tacos great, clam tacos delicious, BLT looked beautiful and elevated to a new level. Highly recommend stopping by for a lunch or dinner. read more

Maybe they've hired new staff this season, but when my girlfriend and I went to Spinney's for a beach day and lunch, we had a lovely experience. Despite there being only two severs on and it being fairy busy (our server did actually forget about us when we sat down, but then repeatedly apologized when she realized her mistake and then quickly got us our salad and beers), we had a lovely experience. No one yelled at us as we parked, we sat on the deck, listened to the waves, and had some of the most perfectly blackened, fresh, scallops I have ever tasted. The haddock sandwich was delicious and light. Having worked out west in crazy tourist areas, I totally understand the frustration of working in a place where tourists try to make their own rules, and unfortunately sometimes you come across as a jerk to the wrong people. Also, you may not get the cream of the crop for seasonal high school employees, which stinks. But, I do love that there is a restaurant in the picturesque part of Maine that hasn't sold out to the prices that are in the southern half of the state and that it still has that rough, honest local, charm. I'll be back again! read more

Really delicious lobster roll with an incredible view! My sister and I enjoyed this spot on our tour of the coast.

Didn't have a good time here! The waiter was super awkward. Made fun of me for not wanting pickles on my plate. Couldn't separate a check that had 10 different people on it. Won't be going back. read more

Such a cool spot. Could be in a beach bar anywhere in the world... 180 degree views of the water paired with delicious fresh food and cocktails...amazing local craft beer selection and fabulous service. Kudos to the new owners...well done! read more

Highly recommend. Spent the day at the beach and quite simply did not feel like leaving so made a reservation at Spinney's. The food was great. I was a big fan of the cocktails while my partner was impressed by the fresh local beer selection. The best part was spending another 2 hours near the water enjoying the view. Couldn't have asked for a better way to spend the "golden hour" after a day at the beach. read more

Spinneys always has great seafood! We have gone there at least once a summer for years and when we went a week ago we were not disappointed! We shared the Popham Platter and it was delicious. The seafood was SO fresh and perfectly cooked. The haddock was moist and sweet, the shrimp were delicious, the clams were great and I let my husband have all of the yucky scallops (I don't like them)! He said the scallops were excellent! I love their tolls! As long as the quality remains high, we will continue to go to Spinneys! read more

Recently opened and fabulous. We are so pleased that the restaurant is open under new management and a new chef. The menu is varied, the food is attractively served, delicious and every dish has a nice spin. I had fish tocos (yum). Others enjoyed lobster rolls, fresh fish, fantastic crispy Brussel sprouts. Lovely setting overlooking Fort Popham and the beach. Couldn't ask for more. read more

New owners! Spinney's is back with a bang! The menu is pared down, and it's a good thing! Staff is beyond friendly. View is outstanding! The food is delicious. Our table had lobster roll, fish tacos, BLT and more! The desserts were enormous! Beer selection is nice! We ate every single bite and will be back! read more

Full disclosure I have never eaten food at Spinney's however we always purchase ice cream. The staff are very courteous and if the food is half as good as the ice cream I'm sure it's amazing. If your out near Popham our tradition is to grab some ice cream and walk be beach it's peaceful and always beautiful. read more

This place rules. I was there for a weekend and the atmosphere was perfect. Just a quaint seaside inn with a wonderful staff. Can't wait to get back read more

Unbelievable setting, on the bay, seals swimming by. We had lobster and then ice-cream at the attached shop- perfect evening.

Spinney's has new owners--and, it would seem, a real chef. What a transformation! Now you can have great views near Popham Beach and enjoy delicious food. Our party of four had two of the specials (heirloom tomato salad and seared Ahi tuna sandwich with aioli and garlic fries), fish tacos, fried whole-belly clams, onion rings (not on the menu; just ask), and wild blueberry pie. Every bite was delicious! read more

Came here after laying on the beach for a few hours for dinner. The restaurant is nice, with friendly staff and great views of the ocean. The lobster however was not good. We ordered 2 lobsters but they seemed old and they were soft shell. The meat was not too sweet and there was very little of it. It seemed like most of the shell was just empty. Once we started digging in, we saw a small sign that said we had to ask specifically for hard shell lobster which had more meat and is much sweeter, in order to not get the soft shell. Too bad most people never think to do that. The side dishes were also unimpressive. The onion rings were thin and coated with a thick, hard batter which was really oily. The rice was pretty flavorless even after I put butter and salt on it. The fries were decent as was the corn on the cob. The clam chowder was pretty good. And the clam steamers were okay at best. Unfortunately this place is the only food choice if you go to this beach, so the food probably won't get much better. But honestly I didn't need to go all the way to Maine to have lobster of this quality. I could've gotten this at a Shoprite in New Jersey. read more

Spinneys Restaurant & Lodging - Seafood Near Me - Phippsburg, Maine

Before I get down to it. This restaurant is a seasonal spot, I had been spending money at Spinney's since my first trip to Popham 1988. This place has no reason to chase out customers, other than not willing to feed a family of Five. But hey who am I to judge! Because that is what happened this afternoon! As I parked in the parking lot and exited the vehicle a lady stuck her head out of the front door and told me that I would have to leave. She thought I was trying to use her parking lot to utilize the beach. She never gave my kids a chance to exit the vehicle! Well sorry this former loyal customer would never do that to a business. I work for a living too, I know what it is like when the money is not glowing as usual! Well I can honestly say that I will never go back to the restaurant again nor will I ever recommend Spinney's. They are RUDE and unprofessional, they do not wash their hands before serving food. And the bathrooms are small and stinky! In fact, if you want food in the Popham Beach area I would bring you own, or stop at Bisson's store on the way in. read more

I've read the bad reviews and did not have anywhere near their experiences. The owner even came out to greet us in the parking lot, as they're parking is limited and some people had to park at the fort down the road. He seemed to be a nice guy. We had a family birthday party and there were about 17 of us. Everyone in the restaurant was kind and warm. The ambiance was casual and inviting, great seats overlooking the ocean; which on this particular day was foggy so it was even better. The food was decent, I had the 1.25 pound rib order and that it was okay for a seafood place. My beautiful wife ordered lobster soup and it had generous portions of lobster and she stated it tasted great. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food. Now they are not gluten aware and I have no right to expect them to be and so I'm already paying for this trip. I had a great experience and so did my family which is a 4 star experience for me. read more

Very convenient, right on the water, varied menu. If you like haddock, Spinney's knows how to cook it. You won't find any better blackened haddock anywhere. It is prepared and served in a cast iron skillet and seasoned to perfection. Very busy this time of year ,so expect to wait. The staff is friendly and tries to be accommodating. Full bar and Hugh menu. read more

I've enjoyed Spinney's for many years, having gone there a few times a summer since I was a child. As I've grown older, I've come to realize that the food they serve is, in fact, excellent. Baked stuffed lobster was the first and remains the best I've ever had. Their haddock is always super fresh and pretty much everything on the menu is killing it. They somehow defy the idea that a "view" restaurant should serve mediocre food. I know it's been a hard time this past year and help is hard to find, but the young woman running the show at the register was on top of it and even got my forgotten chowder order in just ahead of scooping five ice creams so I wouldn't have to wait! Thanks for the great food and the great service! Please open a grocery store and fill the gap Percy's left! You'll get my business every day I'm there. read more

So fun to be back to Popham! First trip to Spinneys was super duper!! Drinks, salads, meal, waitress... all perfect!! I'll be sitting at the bar very soon, which is awesome!! Our waitress was so sweet but I cannot think of her name!!!! read more

We found this restaurant when searching for lobster dinner while on our Labor Day vacation at Sebasco resort. Loved the atmosphere, location with great water views, extensive menu and service. Most in our party chowed down on 1 1/4 lb lobster dinners, but all of the dishes and sides were delicious. Lobsters were perfectly cooked, Maine steamers were sweet, baked potatoes were very flavorful but I have to give special mention to the onion rings which were unusually sweet and crispy. We're thinking about heading back there tomorrow for breakfast, then lunch and then maybe dinner again. read more

I came here for my sisters reception and it was a great experience. I love how the view overlooks the water and its really laid back. Not too conservative and it feels very inviting and warm. My brother and I tried the Lobster Ale and it was actually really good! So good that we got drunk off of it :) We also had real lobsters from the famous state of Maine and boy was it deliciously fresh!! BTW, you need cash to purchase the duty free items there...that's the bummer part... they lost me as a purchasing customer because of that. I wanted their stuff animal that said "Maine" on it, but I didn't have cash... sucks for them. Would I come back: If I visit my sister in Maine again, YES! read more

First time here. Sat on the deck with a nice view of the beach and fort. Tried a few things, and nothing stood out as good, most were a bit below average. The clam chowder bowl was undersized, under flavored, and lacked clams in my view. It wouldn't make the top fifty, as I've tried that many. The steamers were not hot, and that makes a miss step in my eyes. The clam roll was ok....but the amount of product was weak. It came with onion rings, which were over cooked and over breaded, just not good. Hail to my beer, a Belfast Bay Lobster Red Ale, which my GF and I both agreed was by far the best part of the meal. I really don't like being critical of places trying hard, but the food is not something to drive here for. The view is nice, and for deck seating, I'm going with 2 1/2 stars here. read more

Went here with 16 people for a surprise retirement party. I set up with the hostess ahead of time that we would have a surprise retirement dessert with lit candle brought out to someone in our party that was retiring. I made sure the hostess knew it needs to be a surprise (we had a sort of retirement ceremony starting with the surprise dessert) and the hostess assured me it would definately be a surprise. Towards the end of the meal, the waitress asked the retiree if she wanted the surprise dessert now. I couldn't believe she ruined it! The waitress apologized and just walked away not caring about the ruined surprise. The hostess didn't even respond when I asked to speak with a manager, she just walked away from me. I'm hoping she just didn't hear me. This place has great food and reasonable prices but lousy at surprise parties. read more

Decided to go there for lunch, and were sitting right on the beach in front of the restaurant. Both my wife and I had the headache sandwiches, delicious. I had a basket order, which included coleslaw, and a half and half of french fries and onion rings. The onion rings were great. Good selection of beer, both bottles, cans and draft. The draft beer came in mugs, pints, or pitchers. Nice outdoor seating area, picnic tables and umbrellas right on the beach. read more

We had a party of 9 and showed up unplanned at roughly 1pm on a hazy Saturday afternoon in late July 2018. We were in the area visiting Fort Popham and decided it was worth a shot for lunch. We were greeted by their hostess and our soon to be waiter. Both were very nice and accommodating. After we were finished eating, we struck up a conversation with the hostess. She talked with our table and gave us some of the history of the area as well as how things are during the off season. She was a super nice lady and really made us feel very welcomed and comfortable. Our waiter was funny and witty and very attentive. He kept our drinks full without us having to ask. We joked appropriately with the younger people in our group as well as with the adults. Together, they quickly put together a table for all of us and we had our drinks within the first 5-10 minutes. The restaurant itself was a very cool eclectic mix of nautical and humorous signs and paraphernalia. The food was all excellent. Our table had ordered a pretty wide mix of items. Everything from a shrimp cocktail appetizer, to roast beef sandwiches, fried full belly clams, fried clam strips, calamari, scallops, lobster rolls and even a hamburger. All of the food came out quickly, hot, and was cooked perfectly. Their home made onion rings were not over breaded and shoestring style French fries were seasoned perfectly. If you find yourself within the area, or even within 30-45 minutes of this restaurant, you really should check it out. We went during the day for lunch, but looking around, I bet the place looks very cool at night with the lighting, etc. read more

I've been coming to Spinney's for about 20 years and have always enjoyed it but yesterday I had a horrible experience and won't be returning. I walked in at about 2pm and the restaurant was almost empty - only four tables were occupied. I was told that there was at least a twenty minute wait as they didn't want to "slam the kitchen". The hostess was very unwelcoming. There was an older couple that had been waiting for a long time and hadn't been seated. If you can't handle more than four tables without "slamming the kitchen" perhaps you shouldn't be running a restaurant. Also if people arrive seat them and get them a drink at least if the majority of the tables are empty. read more

Living in Maine we expect tourists and even expect to take advantage of their money. Spinney's has taken this to a new level 21.95 for the Jethro bowl of Lobster stew or it should be called lobster flavored milk. Shame on you Spinney's shame on you. I am all in favor of jacking the tourists but WOW! For the record the steamers were great. read more

We pulled in today 5/28/16 at 1:20pm and were told that we couldn't park in our parking spot unless we were going in to the restaurant. We were planning on going in to get food & ice cream but with the greeting of "you can't park here" by a woman standing in the doorway it wasn't professional or welcoming one bit. Good way to scare away locals. Thanks. read more

I had a great time here. This is a family-owned business in a remote village of the coast of Maine. Very quiet, simple, exactly what I was looking for. And I got it here. It´s not a fancy place (please do not update it) and has all the character you can expect of a oceanfront restaurant old style. The food was delicious and the service was so-so because it looks like they´re all family members with no much experience but I forgive that because of the whole experience. read more

I used to love this place. Now, however, whoever is running it has no business operating a restaurant. My wife and I showed up last Saturday for dinner sometime before eight. When we got to the door, we were told that there was a 30-minute wait, and that if we were okay with that, we could have a couple beers on the patio and wait for a table to open up. We were more than willing to wait on the patio because this isn't the kind of place you go to for the food, anyway--you go because it's near the beach and has amazing views of the mouth of the Kennebec river. The food really only has to be fairly decent and the service routine to make a visit there worthwhile. The scenery didn't disappoint, however, half an hour came and went and we still hadn't been seated. At this point, there were numerous open tables. After about an hour, my wife went into the host area and asked the owner if there was any update on our being seated. The owner told her that we were "next on the list," and that since the kitchen had gotten extremely backed-up, they weren't seating anybody until things calmed-down. After a few more minutes, the owner shows us to our table. Meanwhile, they seat the other 20-or-so people who were waiting on the patio (note: if your kitchen has trouble with being backed-up, seating 20 people all at once is not a brilliant way to remediate the problem). For 20 minutes, we sat there without a single visit from a waitress, not even dinner rolls. Finally, an older couple, their daughter and their grandchild were seated right next to us. Grandpa must have known somebody because a waitress came over immediately and took their drink orders. At that point, 80 minutes in, my wife and I decided to vote with our feet and leave. We left money for our beers and headed for the door. As my wife told the owner we were leaving (she's a lot less profane than I am under such circumstances), the waitress behind her apologetically said "ohhhhh, I was just about to get over to your table." The owner herself looked at my wife, half shrugged, and didn't say a word. No "sorry, those beers are on us," not even a simple apology--NOTHING. THAT is crappy management. I used to live a couple towns over, but now that I'm eligible for the "tourist" label, I guess their attitude toward me and my ilk is: "Who cares if you're rude to some tourist? There'll always be plenty who come by the beach, get hungry, and wind up here, so screw 'em." Hey, Lady--there's this thing called the internet, and some of us out there give a damn about where we spend our money and how we're treated. read more

Although it wasn't full, it took almost 30 minutes to get seated. Not sure why. When we finally got seated, it took about 30 minutes for the waitress to acknowledge us. Of course she was sorry but she went past us a couple of times and we were not invisible. The food was ok, the usual lobster, clams and stuff. However, their steamed mussels were delicious. The are smoked too. I think I regretted not eating a full plate instead. But overall it is overpriced for what it is. But the mussels though... read more

Horrid, awful experience. We were seated at a filthy table, and had to hear a man (later identified as an owner) berating a crying waitress through half our meal. The food was so-so and overpriced, our rolls were stale, and the restrooms were atrocious. And, then we both got food poisoning. I used to come here as a kid/young adult, and was even a waitress here under the previous owners (Jack and Faye.) It was a clean, pleasant eatery, with the freshest seafood anywhere. It breaks my heart to see such a lovely place gone so horribly wrong in just a few year's time. read more

When I was a kid, my family would spend every August at Popham Beach, where the neighborhood dining options are extremely limited - it's basically Spinney's, Percy's (more of a breakfast/lunch option) or a long drive. Every year we'd go back to Spinney's, and every year we'd leave saying that we'd never go back, secretly hoping that a big storm would come and return Spinney's to the sea whence it came. It's been several years since my last visit, but since many of the other seafood restaurants in the area were still closed for the season, Spinney's it was. It looked pretty much the same as I remembered, though a few things had been re-arranged. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive, cracking jokes and telling us that the 50 or so harbor seals frolicking in the water outside was part of their May mating season. Harbor seals are pretty cute; I doubt they have to try very hard to get a mate. As for our food, it was a mixed bag. I ordered the clambake, which was a bit overpriced at $29, but at a place like this you're paying for ambiance (view) as well. The chowder was decent but not mind-blowing. The steamers were plump and sweet. It's hard to ruin a lobster, but they gave it their best shot, overcooking the otherwise-delicious crustacean that was just crammed full of meat. The menu promised corn, which I expected to be on the cob, but which turned out to be canned niblets. The lady friend ordered the fettuccine alfredo topped with lobster meat, scallops and shrimp, which she scarfed down the entire generous portion. Years ago, erosion was eating away at the beachfront in the area, and we all wished the sea would claim the restaurant instead of the cottages around it. If the sea did reclaim Spinney's, it would be a blow to the village of Popham Beach, but certainly not a blow to the culinary world. I give it 3 stars, but 2 1/2 is more like it. read more
