They say a picture is worth a thousand words and the pancake photos I've seen from Spillway Diner always had me salivating. So I decided to make the long drive after church to try them. I'm the type of person who looks at a menu and decide what I want well before I go, yet get to a place and look at the menu again like I might change my mind. Did the same thing today but went ahead and ordered the buttermilk pancakes with scrambled eggs and bacon. While waiting on my food, my coffee, when it came out, had the aroma of liquid gold (yeah I don't know what gold smells like but I imagine it was this). I so enjoyed my coffee. I equally enjoyed my food, which came out quickly. I like restaurants that use real and not liquid eggs. I could tell the grill was seasoned as my eggs required no seasoning. The bacon was good. Would have preferred it just a tad more crispy but it wasn't a deal breaker for me. The pancakes are like the kind my granny used to make. Fluffy in the middle with crispy edges. I could only eat one as I ate the bacon and eggs first and was full! Service was good. I believe the manager was my server. He was good. I am so glad I made the trip to try them. The food is always fresh and great flavor. The pancakes are super fluffy and taste homemade. The server was very attentive and was friendly. This is my second time visiting and will not be my last. The staff is very hardworking though often they are overwhelmed ( that's not a bad sign as it usually reflects how popular they are). Pricing is very fair. The menu has all the typical breakfast staples and lots of options to satisfy just about anyone. I went with the Super Bacon and Cheese Omelette with a side of hashbrowns and a biscuit. The omelette was packed full or crispy bacon quite tasty, but the hashbrowns were very so so. The star of my meal ended up being the biscuit. I don't even typically eat biscuits, but this one was fresh, warm, flaky, and scrumptious. Probably the best biscuit I've ever had. The booth tables are fairly large, so I was comfy with 3 large fellas. The decor is classic, retro diner - picture flashy tin, mismatched colors, and silver-edged tables. The vents and floors could probably be a little cleaner but I'm telling you this... you. will. not. care. The burger is to die for!!! The homemade French fries will make you want to set-up new residence and leave the complicated world behind. This is the best you'll get as far as diners go in MS (and we have many). Wife and I had breakfast this morning. First impression I think this was an old huddle house. Walked in and the place wasn't that clean, could see food scraps on the floor, no they weren't busy. Waitress was nice, not sure she really knew the menu. She offered an item that was already included in what I ordered. Food came out missing the grits, they ran out of grits and it's 9am, they did make more. First offering I didn't touch cook came over and said let me get rid of those, I have some fresh cooking now. By the time they came out looking much better, I was almost done eating, I put a little syrup on the waffle and took one bite, was like eating cardboard. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day so I tend to be a little more critical of a restaurant that specializes in breakfast dishes. The first thing you notice is the variety of the menu choices. If you can't find something you want I'd be surprised. Well a picky five year old, my granddaughter, had that problem. That didn't phase the waitress. She asked what she did want and said, "I can get that for you." she earned her tip right then. I ordered Fish and Grits. A bowl of grits smothered in Crawfish Julie topped with two huge catfish fillets. It was cooked perfectly and was delicious. Around the table we had biscuits and gravy, an omelet, pecan pancakes, eggs, bacon and sausage. Everyone complimented the taste and the serving sizes guaranteed no one left hungry. Most of the breakfast dishes come with enough sides to feed a platoon. All for very reasonable prices. And kids eat free, even picky eaters like my granddaughter. I ordered the 10 oz ribeye with regular fries and sweet potato fries. When I received my order the fries that were there were only the sweet potato fries and no regular fries, but they were all burnt beyond repair, so ultimately they were inedible. The "Texas toast" was just a soggy wet mess. So those two items had to just be tossed. As for the steak, which I ordered medium rare was a totally greasy hot mess. Even on a bad day, this food was so very inexcusable, inedible, unacceptable. I would have taken a picture of the food, but honestly, 90% of it was thrown away. If I could have given this place a negative-5 stars I would have. It was not worth the money I paid AT ALL. I absolutely DO NOT recommend this place for any meal. That was money lost on that. But maybe this review will save this review reader the same experience, and disappointment and not the $$ lost or bad taste in their mouth.
