Ordered vegetarian dishes for takeout. First of all, the taste was amazing! Perfectly balanced with a big strength scale. Raita and Nan very tasty. However, the reason I will only give 4 stars, is that when you order a veggie dish for the same price of a meat dish, you would expect a bit more cheese and lentils. The food here is outstanding. The curries and tandoori dishes are all amazing. They clearly take a lot of care when developing flavours and use fresh ingredients. I would give them 5 stars for taste and food but the service is so, so and the prices are a bit high. Unfortunately, they are lacking in customer experience but otherwise very enjoyable. read more

I was very excited to try the butter chicken here after reading all the amazing reviews. I ordered butter chicken $14 and for this it does not come with rice or naan - another $2.50 for naan that was stringy and not very nice. The butter chicken tasted like Campbell's tomato soup with some spice. I also ordered Gulab Jamun which are typically served warm and are about the size of a golf ball and nice and fluffy and fresh. What I received were 2 pc small (other places serve 4 for the same price) and they were cold and stale. Very sorry but IMO they don't deserve the high ranking they have been given. read more

About $16 for an Indian lunch buffet. I enjoyed the butter chicken and the chickpea curry the most. They have had dessert here, the gulab jamun and a carrot cake. The main bread was very delicious, but was contingent on whether our server walked by. I love this restaurant. I am busy career woman and need to have catering always for 12 -120 people at a days notice. The owners are very nice including the Chef who aims to please. I get great quantities, non-greasy and always fresh food. I absolutely love their tandoori fish, butter chicken, Palak paneer, potato stuffed naan with Channa curry. No problem I thought it happens ill just call the restaurant and they'll send it out.... NOPE... 2 different very snooty young ladies who I spoke to at the restaurant told me to get a refund from skip for the item or "just come pick it up" ?? Seriously? Pick it up? After paying $90 for delivery they screw up and I have to come pick up their mistake? Brutal. Worst part was how condescending the 2 young ladies I spoke to at the restaurant were. Definitely some good Indian food. Great flavours like you would expect from an Indian food restaurant. And the samosas were amazing. Pay close attention to what your ordering on the menu though, there is an item under the rice section that isn't actually rice. Good to make sure you know exactly what you're getting. read more

Unbelievable. Finally an Indian restaurant that is true to its culture. Most Indian restaurants today dumb down their foods, leaving out difficult to find and expensive spices . This restaurant does not. Their dishes are truly to die for. Fragrant and tasty on so many levels omg... We started with the hand made samosas, big golden bundles of fresh ingredients. Then main courses of mutton, butter chicken, lentals, rice and outstanding Riata. The Naan bread is big and right from the tandoori oven. Finish with a pressed cottage cheese dessert that blew my mind. It's truly unfortunate that I live 3 hours away, or I would make a weekly trip to this wonderful eatery. My go-to Indian place! Fabulous food, mediocre service, extensive menu and comfortable dining area. However, I don't recommend the buffet unless you get there right when it opens. I have visited Spice Roots for their buffet on a regular basis, most recently Monday, October 22, 2018. I was very disappointed. Some of the dishes served were barely warm and reminded me of leftovers. The naan was dry and burnt, not its usual buttery self. I've had much more flavourful carrot pudding in the past. As always the goat was excellent, though extremely bony. If this becomes my new regular experience at Spice Roots, it will no longer be my place to visit for Indian food in Guelph. read more

Sunday lunch 1:30pm, family of 4 - empty restaurant ....still 55 minutes to get our food. Small amount of food for my dollar. $75 and I was still hungry. Small bowl of rice for $3.50 was dry and cold. Two orders of samosa was dripping oil (got everything oily including my clothes). 2 small vegetables orders were mainly sauce ...was sad to eat with the cold dry rice. The curry fish was swimming in oil - I was surprised to find fish and not just oily sauce. Most food was nothing amazing except the tandoori fish which was very good. I will not return. read more

We are always on the lookout for vegetarian food and found this place on Yelp with good reviews. First, location in downtown Guelph is very convenient in a strip mall with lots of parking. They have an outdoor patio too. For an Indian restaurant there has been a lot of effort at making the decor subtle and the colours very earthy. We had a great server, herself a vegetarian, so she helped us decide. The service was quick and attentive. They have the standard buffet offering, but since we are not big eaters, we went a-la-carte. We tried the vegetable pulao (large portion, but spicy), rotis (good with lots of butter), bhindi masala (okra with spices - very spicy) and paneer makhni (spicy, despite being assured it was mild). For dessert we tried the gulab jamun (milk dumplings in sugar syrup) - delicious. read more

Incredibly fresh food! Good service nice atmosphere. This place is a level above all other Indian food. The freshness is amazing! The naan is straight from the oven and cooked to perfection! Each curry comes in a bowl with a candle underneath to keep the food HOT! Each curry erupts with flavours with perfectly compliment the rice. Went to Spice roots for dinner. We ordered Coke & ginger ale from the soda fountain and found they were both flat. We were told that any replacement sodas would be the same. We asked for a bottle or soda can, and were informed that there were none! Moving on to dinner, The butter chicken tasted like chunks of precooked chicken were tossed in a flavorless butter sauce. The chilly chicken barely had any chillies or salt. It was bland and when we asked for chili sauce , there was no additional sauce available. We got lucky when we asked for chilli flakes . For an authentic Indian restaurant, which it is not, there were no sauces or chutneys available. The malai kofta tasted of raw gram flour and lacked a Malai ( creamy) flavor. The butter naans and tandoori roti were excellent. We left the restaurant feeling cheated out of otherwise a beautiful evening.
