While strolling by Diana Downtown's outdoor patio, I noticed the tantalizing aromas of food being served on the front patio. Smelling the aroma of a creamy butter chicken, and the scent of freshly steamed basmati rice wafting by, along with that baked bread smell of Naan, it sealed the deal to return here for a culinary adventure. At the front entrance is a chalkboard sign displaying their Daily Curry Features. We were greeted by a nice server named Isabelle who brought us menus and water. She was very sweet and personable, chatted with us and took our orders. We wanted to sample a bit of everything so we ordered one meat curry and three vegetarian curries which allowed us to try all of the Daily Curry Features. VEGETARIAN THALI comes with your choice of two daily vegetarian curry features, basmati rice, naan, daal & raita dressing....$18. For the vegetarian thali, we ordered the Romano bean, and our second choice was the red pepper zucchini. MEAT THALI comes with one meat curry feature, and your choice of daily vegetarian curry, basmati rice, naan, daal & raita dressing..... $19. We ordered one meat curry, Keema bhaji, and one vegetarian one, mushroom red pepper paneer. The African-style Daal was the most adventurous to our taste palates as it was extremely flavourful with fragrant aromatic spices. The vegetable curries were more subtle tasting and light. Five Stars to Diana's because it's delicious food brought quickly by friendly staff, many of whom have been servers at this downtown Guelph mainstay for years! The mini veg platter is my favourite pakora and samosa plate in town! The tamarind and raita are tangy and cooling, just as they ought to be. The butter chicken is mellow with a deep flavour base that's second to none. I love their rice...with a hint of fennel! Prices are reasonable, portions are generous, and seating and atmosphere are always welcoming. The curry deals are scrumptious with special pricing Tues and Wed. Dishes arrive with just enough heat, but be warned the tikka is spicey-hot, more than expected. This reliable family run business serves a delicious Saturday and Sunday brunch, with a good eggs benny and tasty standard bacon & eggs. The salmon benny is satisfyingly yumsters. Went here yesterday for a birthday party. There was already a reservation set up for us so we were sat down fairly quickly. When we sat down, our server came back to our table and asked what we wanted for drinks and she got them for us. We also were pretty quick to order as everyone in the group ordered Butter Chicken, and I ordered Cheesy Pasta. Our orders kind of took a while...even the server had to apologize for it being slightly delayed. Our group didn't bother with it too much as we were too busy chatting amongst ourselves. Everyone got their food without any mistakes or problems, and when mine came everyone said how my dish looked delicious. The Creamy Pasta is really delicious to look at and eat! Kind of had a similar taste to that of KD Mac and Cheese, but that was great to me :) It also came with garlic bread and it was great to me. The taste, and presentation was as expected. Our server was pretty good as well. I think some people has eaten here before and had recognized her as being a new server. Either way, she did a good job. She was polite, and always ensured that our drinks were topped off. I would recommend. However, some comments from our table was that to be careful when ordering steak dishes. read more

I'm glad my friends suggested my namesake restaurant . . . The menu has higher priced standard fare entrees and what looks like good value East Indian, which we settled on. We started with The Diana appetizer ($5 pp): a pakora, veggie samosa, and avocado spring roll. The latter was surprisingly good even with its smooth texture. All fresh tasting and delicious. I enjoyed the "Diana" drink ($7) which reminded of a Bahama Mama. Wine by the glass with dinner ($10) and they are generous on their pour. I chose the Thali ($13) as it has a bit of everything on a tin rectangular buffet plate: naan, daal, raita, and choice of two curries - butter and coconut chicken. The bases were well flavoured and the chicken tender. It doesn't look like a lot, but it was filling with the appetizer. My friends enjoyed the chicken tikka ($18). Only minus is the dark, sparse environment with low lighting - good for winter, but not summer. If it's warm enough I'd suggest the sidewalk patio tables. This is lovely place. Just sitting in the front room on a Saturday morning made me feel good. The decor is Asian chic, with vibrant red walls and Buddhist details. The breakfast menu is fantastic, with about 10 different kinds of omelettes and some pancakes. The home fries are tasty but fruit or salad can be substituted. The coffee keeps coming---the service is attentive and warm. I loved this place---I had a great breakfast for $6 (about the same amount you'd spend at a Denny's or IHOP in the U.S.) but in a beautiful, classy setting, right in the heart of downtown Guelph---with the Guelph Jazz Festival being set up right outside while we ate! read more

We've eaten here several times and as a Celiac, I appreciate that there are enough choices AND the willingness of the kitchen to help me find something great to eat every time. If you love spicy food, you are going to LOVE eating here. When we started eating here several years ago, we would take the whole family. While finding it a bit of a wallet stretch, we loved eating here to celebrate and appreciated that it was within biking distance from home. However, the price has gone up over the years and now we eat her far less often and only as a couple. My Indian-food loving parents came to town for a visit, so I asked around and was recommended this place. I called ahead to ask if it would be suitable for someone sensitive to loud noise (my step-father uses a hearing aid), and was assured we'd be seated in a "quiet corner". --- We were seated in between a birthday party and a very boisterous large family. Don't get me wrong - I usually have no problem with this kind of environment - it's fun when your out with a group of friends looking for a lively atmosphere. But it was unfortunately not appropriate for my folks - and I was disappointed that I was mislead. SERVICE: Our waiter was very sweet and took his time in explaining things to my folks - so that was appreciated. FOOD: Unlike most places serving Indian food, it offered decent seafood options - which was a nice surprise. I really enjoyed my masala scallops. But our coriander calamari was pretty overcooked and rubbery. Interestingly - we weren't asked for our preference for how hot we wanted our food. Odd?? Overall - it was good, but I'd say I've had better (for cheaper). FINAL VERDIT: I think I'll search around for another place offering Indian cuisine for the next time my parents come to visit. read more

We decided to stop by for dinner tonight for our first visit to Diana Downtown. We're both vegetarian, and there were several items on the menu including Indian dishes and some pasta plates. Most of the dishes have meat and/or seafood. This spot is a bit pricier than many of the other restaurants with Indian dishes in Guelph. We ordered a curry of day (spinach & paneer) and the vegetable & paneer masala. We also had the pakora appetizer. The dishes were sizable and nicely presented. However, the flavor was slightly bland for all of them. The pakoras were large patties of veggie bits instead of the usual highly fried shreds. If you like the fried aspect as much as the veggies then this is not for you. On the other hand, if you like the veggies and often wish for less fry coating, then you'll like these pakoras. The veggie & paneer masala was full of yummy fresh veggies, including brussel sprouts (yum!) and focused more on the veggies than on the paneer. They both had the makings of great dishes, but the blandness combined with the higher price were disappointing. It was not worth taking the leftovers home. I noticed that the several other tables who left before us also decided not to take anything home. Additionally, the service was friendly but not attentive. After waiting with empty water glasses for quite some time we finally got our server's attention and asked her to just bring a pitcher of water so we could keep our own glasses full. She did return to refill the small carafe afterward but often didn't refill the glasses while she was there. At $20 x plate I expect more involved table service. We were there about an hour before close and there were about half a dozen other tables there, so she wasn't too rushed. It felt to us like she was kinda over it for the evening and just waiting on everyone to leave. The inside was lovely, although the hardwood floors are in dire need of a little love. I'm not sure why, but it was really, really warm in there (much warmer than outside). The restrooms are downstairs, so they are not accessibile for those with mobility concerns around stairs. Seating consists of tables and chairs without arms, some with a long shared booth along one side. It is pretty dark in there, which I liked but those who see best in strong light may struggle. read more

Can express enough how much I love Diana Downtown. Their butter chicken is to die for. I don't tend to order anything else when I go there because it is so good. Always warm and delicious and is especially good with Naan and their field green salad. The dressing for the salad is some kind of honey mustard flavour and is incredible. For appetizers I recommend either the avocado spring rolls or the calamari. The calamari comes with two different types of dip, a spicy thai and a jalapeno aioli and are very good. Summer time they have a nice patio off of the sidewalk. Inside is beautifully decorated, I love the art and the wall colours. I would highly recommend that if you're looking for indian food that you take a stop into Diana Downtown. It's delicious! read more

*********Rating 3.5************* There are many places to go to for breakfast in Guelph, but Diana Downtown is one of the better ones. It is unfortunate that they only serve breakfast on the weekend because I would definitely go during the week if they were open. I had their standard breakfast which was 2 eggs, bacon, toast and eggs, and that came to $6 which is a tad on the pricey side. The eggs were cooked just as i ordered, the potatoes were sliced thin but were on the greasy side, however they were not deep fried. Usually when u got to a breakfast place on a Sunday there are a lot of hungover University kids. The Diana draws a slightly older crowd. The reason they got a 3.5 and not a four was because of the customer service. After we had left our money at the table, we walked right by our server and they couldn't even say "bye" or "have a nice day", a little customer service goes a long way. Overall, if you are looking for a tasty meal in a pretty restaurant, try the Diana. read more

By far my all time favorite entree here is Diane's steak because it is grilled to my liking. This restaurant has been around for a while and it's got some good food. I no longer live in this city as I moved away for a long time now but I still remember how I enjoyed eating here with my family. I will have to check it out when I'm back in town. Thali Mondays and Tuesday are a great deal, 2 curries(always rotating) rice, dal, and naan for $10. The service that my boyfriend and I received was good, however my food... not so much. We went there this afternoon welcomed with a smile and seated promptly. After we ordered, we were served our food in good time. My boyfriend ordered their beef sandwich, which he said was good; I ordered the butter vegetable curry - the vegetables were RAW. The sauce was warm, but the vegetables (potatoes, carrots, pea-pods) were not cooked. I expected better food. read more

Came here for lunch on a Sunday with friends. The restaurant was fairly quiet for this time of day and we were able to sit away from other groups, which was nice for a change. We ordered from their lunch menu - the food was excellent and the portions were fantastic. We had really been craving Indian and we were pleased with how quickly our dishes came out. I usually don't write reviews but I thought I would express my thoughts on a recent visit to Diana Downtown in Guelph. My wife and I usually go for lunch at least twice a month and order their "Indian Thali". The food is acceptable, but the service we received wasn't as expected. My wife is a vegetarian and ordered spinach and panner, but was served spinach and beef instead(honest mistake). It seemed however they just took the beef portion off and replaced it with the veggie portion as you can see the remnants of the old dish still in place. When it came time to get our bill we were charged for two meat dishes, my wife asked about it and the server stated it was the same price as the veggie dish. When i came home I checked the menu and noticed the veggie dish is actually $1 less. I hate to complain over one dollar, as I have spent hundreds at this establishment but this really put a sour taste in my mouth. I may continue to visit, but will definitely see this place in a different light. read more

I work in Guelph once-a-week and this is our usual go-to lunch spot for either dine in or take out. I always head for the curries, and typically take the curry of the day (veg) as the usual three selections to pick from are always interesting and freshly made. Other good bets for lunch are the chicken vindaloo or the vegetable thali (always looks like more than I can eat but I always manage to eat it). The staff is always attentive and friendly. A nice place option when looking for a more casual business lunch atmosphere. read more
