I have always enjoyed this restaurant. My family has had fair to middling experiences. I recommend avoiding any dishes that include shrimp as an ingredient, unless you're looking for an excuse to get out of work for a few days. That said, the staff are incredibly friendly and, as long as they are careful with their seafood, the food is delicious. Well, it's delicious even when they aren't careful, but that bacteria will inevitably return to take its revenge for being digested. There are better spots in Cambridge for a curry, but if you want a local, bar-like experience with a side of Indian food, Grain of Salt is a good spot to hang out. read more

Food wasn't bad. We went few months back. Although the food was good. A little on the expensive side. Only thing I didn't like was when I order chicken masala and it was super spicy. And when I complained about it because kids couldn't eat it. The student waiter wants to make a stink about it. I love NY yankees and because I have baseball cap on, they want to be stereo typical. So very disappointing. My meal was a disaster. It started off as my order was a reject from a different table. Two tables down from where I was sitting, the ladies politely sent by the dish as it wasn't what they ordered. The waiter took to plate off their table walked to the back and seconds later brought out the dish to me. When I asked if it was the same order - the waiter said it was. Fine. However the food was cold but that time. My dining companion was left without a meal as my already plate grew colder. When the waiter brought my friends dish, it turned out to be the wrong meal and with apologies the waiter took it back. I was almost finished my meal by the time my companion received his meal. My husband and I love Indian food. We have quite a few Indian friends who like to make suggestions about where and where not to eat. One thing that is consistent is that everyone recommends this place above all other. We went for lunch and had their lunch specials. Chicken Tikka Masala for me and Vindaloo Chicken for the husband. It came with daal, a salad, a piece of tandori chicken, rice, raita, naan and kheer for dessert. It was a good deal and the food was delicious. I am from Cambridge, now live in Toronto, and have driven by this place many times and scoffed at it, thinking it would be total "Cambridge Style" Indian food (read: very, very white). I am eating crow now, as I tried it for the first time today and it was REALLY good. My husband and I both had vegetable curries and they were so full of flavour and not super oily. The naan bread and pakora was delicious too. The decor is very dated, and the outside appearance is a bit misleading and seedy, but wow, I would definitely come back here again. I should also mention that the people (family?) that runs it are very friendly, always a plus. read more

There is no better Indian restaurant than this one in all tri-city area. I know that Indian cuisine is a very broad term, and I couldn't tell you exactly what part of India they are trying to showcase, but the dishes here are absolutely great. I haven't found the same dishes anywhere else (other than the classics, curry or vindaloo or tandoori, for example) and this brings us back. This, the taste and also the service. If you like butter chicken, you have to try the chicken in almond sauce. And their kulfi is the best we had so far. As with all Indian places, a great care should be taken with the spice level. 2* is more than enough here. Highly recommended. No comparison with any other Indian restaurant in the area. read more

Surprisingly good. Portions are excellent - we had leftovers; the food is terrific, and different (in a good way) from the fare we usually get in Kitchener. Especially fond of the deep-friend onion clusters served as appetizers. You don't get those at every establishment. The place, when we went, was overbusy, and as a result, the wait times were a little more than I'd like to see, but it's understandable. The cleanliness of the facility was mediocre because we came at the tail end of a busy time, I'm sure. Overall, I'd be more than happy to return. We've tried many Indian restaurants and Grain of Salt is the best we've sampled to this point. Fantastic service, delicious curries, and plentiful rice and naan. The price is decent for the amount of food served, and you won't be disappointed. Tons of parking, lots of seating, but be prepared to wait a short time if going on weekends. I'm a regular. I have dined in and ordered take out ever since I moved to the region. The food is authentic and excellent. The black dal that comes with the lunch thali is quite possibly the best I have ever tasted in Canada. The portions are impressive and almost every item on the menu is worth ordering. A wonderful selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes makes this place, hands down, the best Indian restaurant in the tri-city area. The only reason for a 4/5 rating is because public health officers have noted a few critical infractions at this restaurant in the recent past. read more

I came here 3 days ago and I didn't have time to review it, so here it is... I came in right at 4:30pm for dinner and was attended to immediately, which is great. The customer service was almost perfect.. very good customer service.. when water went half full, he came back to refill and poured water into my cup like he had bartending skills, lol.. I liked it. He was very friendly. Here is what I ordered: Lamb karahi (asked for it to be spicy) - it was very spicy and flavorful and delicious. I would definitely order this again. Saffron rice - it was good, although I should have probably got Briyani.. Garlic Naan - Very good and fluffy Butter Chicken - I liked it but I will personally never order butter chicken from here.. it had a sweet coconuty flavor (I prefer more authentic butter chicken).. this was like the second Indian restaurant, that had a sweet coconuty flavor to it, I don't get it? That's Not butter chicken original flavor.. if you like coconut, you will enjoy it.. this was my least favorite part of the meal. I paid almost $20 for a single order of Chilli-chicken, which I love. It's the most I ever paid for this dish and it was not really worth it.
