Parking - check. This restaurant has a small shared parking in front of their entrance on Regina. There is also ample parking in the larger uptown waterloo parking area. I came here on a Thursday night under high recommendations from others. My expectations were high, i was excited! 7:00pm, walk in and there's a quiet, empty ambiance to the place. We got to choose where we sat and were promptly given beverages and the menu. On the center of the table is their form of a lazy susan. 3 tea candles and a holder above it to hold your meal - it's not just to light up your table :) I ordered the Kadai Murg - a boneless chicken dish in a spicy tomato like sauce with green peppers. Flavour was good. It had a good amount of spice to it. Sides are to be ordered separately - they do not come with anything. I ordered the saffron rice and my friend ordered the garlic naan. Rice was alright. Nothing outstanding, but a good balance with the Kadai Murg to soak up the sauce. The garlic naan was really good. Very strong fresh garlic flavour - prob the best thing on the table. My friend ordered the Tandoori Chicken. 5 pieces of chicken, bone in, served on a sizzling platter. The aroma was heavenly. The taste? meh. It was overly salted... but cooked alright. It wasn't too dry, but it's not something that stood out other than the initial smell. Probably should have ordered the butter chicken for a better evaluation... the service was good. The owner seemed very nice. Overall, it was an okay experience. Did it live up to the hype I received from others? no. Was it decent food? yes. For the portion size (it's quite a bit of food, but for $20 a dish plus a side to go with it), it's alright. read more

This is a fine dining restaurant that doesn't burn a hole in your pocket. Despite coming here (with sweatpants on) on a whim based on yelp reviews, the service and food didn't disappoint! I felt very welcomed in here by the waitress. She served this crisp rolled up bread-like appetizers with 3 different dipping sauces (forgive me for my lack of Indian food lingo). She then lit up candles on an extremely large centrepiece and placed a cloth serviette infront of us. It turns out the centerpiece would hold a bowl and the candle would keep the dish warm (ingenious)! Kashmiri Rogan Josh ~$18.99 (A delightful lamb curry with a combination of blended spices, herbs, saffron and yogurt) Great to share with 1 other person. It was so good. There was a unique tanginess (sour and saltiness) from the curry and they definitely used spices that I haven't tasted before. The lamb was extremely tender, and not gamey at all. On one of trip as usual I visited this place but really disappointed. As a starter I order Resmi Kabab, unfortunately I don't think it's Reshmi but chewy and relly over Solty. I returned it and order paneer pakora, was pricey and small portion but taste good. For main course I had Shrimp dish " Dum ka jinga, and same, over salt. Out if 6 shrimp 3 with tail skin on. With price tag of 19.99$ didn't make sense. For drink I had masala Lassie, but it was like buttermilk with spices. Can't call Lassie. In short I would choose some other place over this. read more

I'm sad to say I haven't had much good authentic Indian food before, but this place was amazing. My friend recommended it. We ate family style. Everything was amazing, especially the kesaria kulfi (spiced frozen sweet milk, in the same ballpark as ice cream). It helped that I was very hungover that day and we were on a long bus trip back from muskoka so that probably helped with enjoying the meal, but I believe it would've been delicious no matter what. Communal pots of sauce are taken from table to table, drying out and picking up germs as they go. Unhealthy and unappetizing, and it is revolting to see other people's crumbs in "your" sauce. I'm not a germphobe but I found this to be a foul practice. I never saw the sauces refilled or the sauce plates taken away to be cleaned. The curries are lacking -- sloppily presented and tasted of stale spices. The only reason this place gets even two stars is that the samosas are still okay and the tandoori is decent. Our shrimp appetizer came with the nasty table sauce and cost $10 for four small fried shrimp. On the menu they allegedly have some special sauce, but it's just the little table sauces and nothing special. Wine list is short, and mark-ups are massive. The outdoor tables should be a nice place to eat in the summer but the plastic tablecloths are tacky and dirty. Our waiter was rude and awkward. He nearly threw the food on the table and interrupted our conversation. I mentioned it to the hostess; she said he usually works in the kitchen and has a condition that makes it difficult for him to work with customers. This is unfortunate, but I'm still paying pretty high prices and part of that is service. Perhaps they should hire another waiter if they are lacking in staff. It's a shame, because we used to love this place. It used to be a cozy upscale Indian treat and now it's just messy and lazy. They are very lucky that there's little in the way of competition in K-W, because this place wouldn't last a week in Toronto. We took out-of-town guests to Masala Bay more than once and enjoyed it, but this last experience was a total turnoff. We will not be returning. read more

I went with a group of friends following an exam. It has a relatively small dining area and our group basically took up maybe half of it. We went for the lunch buffet option, which was $14, whereas a la carte was $15 + per dish. Huge pitchers of water were on the table and finished plates were cleared off almost instantly. The selection was small but I think is comparable to other Indian buffets I've been to. It had plain basmati rice, butter chicken, tandoori chicken, and goat curry. I wished that the dishes were kept on hot plates, as they were only warm. The butter chicken and goat curry were so fragrant from the spices. Only complaint was that they don't refill their two trays, and the goat curry ran out. There were maybe half a dozen appetizers, but they all had similar ingredients such as potatoes. My friend who often eats vegetarian Indian food told me that they didn't include some of the better ones from their a la carte menu. For the desserts, my friend tried a lot of them, and said they were too sweet for her liking! Some were drowned in syrup and another tasted like fried sugar...so I just ended my meal with orange slices and rice pudding which was also not something I acquired taste for. Overall, I think the amount of food I ate was well worth the price...but maybe the selection isn't really what I crave most. read more

My boyfriend took me to Masala bay the first time was for our anniversary. The food and the atmosphere surprised me. I was so happy about the portion and the style the food was being serve. With that being said, my first impression of Masala Bay was a 10. Last night, after a very long day at work, my boyfriend and I went again. We were so happy and excited to again experience the warm hospitality and the amazing food. We were very hungry. We went straight into the restaurant and order and we were greeted by the chef ( he was very sweet) and not the front of house lady. Who I believe was the owner. We asked to be placed outside since the weather was nice and she said, yeah go. No one helped us out with getting the table ready. She didn't bother cleaning the table for us until later. Not only that, the new plate she sent out for us to dine with was dirty. My boyfriend didn't make it a big deal... Only asked her to switch place but she didn't even bother to apologize. They served us cold food, they ignored us and I felt awful because of my previous experience..... I won't be coming here again. The owner's attitude and spirit last night has ruined it for me. I don't care how good the food is, I felt so disappointed and angry. I would never recommended this place to anyone else. read more

One of the best Indian meals I've ever had. Food was absolutely delicious. Served piping hot. Martinis are cheap ($5.25). Food is on the pricier side $20 per entree but completely worth it. Atmosphere is good. Was chilly to start but warmed up. Waitress worked hard and was efficient dealing with take out calls and patrons in the restaurant. Such unique flavours, food quality meat. Masala Bay has good Indian food. The two times I've gone, I have been with a group of people and we have shared dishes, family style. So, I'm not always sure what I ate. But, it was all good. Some of the things that stood out to me were: the garlic naan and the vindaloo (it is VERY spicy even to this southern so watch out). As the previous reviewer pointed out, it is a small restaurant with what can be difficult parking (the second time we parked in a free parking lot just past the restaurant which was nice) and they can be understaffed. But, the food is good, the beer is good and the atmosphere is nice. I will certainly go back if I find myself in W-town! read more

Definitely my favourite place in Waterloo. I've tried a couple of Indian places nearby and keep coming back. Many of the staples of Indian comfort food are done very well. The menu marks the spiciness of a given dish very well and I've never been surprised by either how hot or bland a dish was given the spice marking. The portions are very large and conducive to sharing with a friend of partner. I've never been to their lunch buffet but their prices can be a big high at dinner. Regardless, I consider it a welcome premium for the quality of the food. They also do take-out and it is great to take such good food home. Nothing stood out to be amazing but a few things definitely stood out that need changing: about 90% of their plates and cutlury were dirty (spots, stains, and food remains), the food was okay (some items looked like they have been sitting for quite some time), the salad wasn't fresh which was a bummer and it had HUGE pieces of onions that made up the majority of the salad. I love this restaurant! Definitely the best Indian restaurant in Waterloo. The decor is very nice inside. For dinner, they dim the lights and bring out the candles so it has a very romantic feel. In the summer time, they will open up a patio which is a bit more casual if you want to go with a couple of friends. (The first time I went, I went with 3 friends and we were all dressed in very casual clothing. It was a little awkward since we were having dinner, and there were candles and everyone around us was dressed up and on a date or with their families. We didn't know!!) The service is good, but sometimes it seems they are understaffed and take a while to bring you something like more water. Overall, the wait staff is helpful with the menu and friendly. The food is great! The butter chicken is very tasty and the naan is made very well. They also bring out some complimentary crispy rolls (?) and sauces for you to dip them in and they taste amazing!! The best value is to go during lunch time. For lunch, they only have a buffet. The one time I went, they had fruit, butter chicken, naan, a type of goat curry, chicken tandoori, potatoes, some beans/veggies dishes, dessert and ice cream. Great value! My only complaint is parking. Masala Bay is located next to a hotel, and there is a private lot but I guess the hotel claims all the parking spots there since there are signs everywhere that state parking is reserved for hotel guests only. Consequently, you will have to park on the street and walk about 5 to 10 minutes, depending on the time of the day. I came here with such high expectations after having read quite a few positive reviews. We ordered off the menu for an early dinner. The mango lassi was quite good. The biriyani rice was dried out and crunchy - probably leftover rice from their lunch buffet. The chicken in the curry tasted as though it was a few days old. The lamb in the biriyani had too much fat left on it and made the whole dish taste too greasy. The décor inside suits the Indian theme of the restaurant. The lunch buffet here has a pretty decent selection. The curry and naan here are really oily, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but if it's not your thing, take note. The samosas are called "beggar's pouches" and are a huge rip-off. read more

If you arent that hungry you will not be disappointed with there a la carte dinner even though it might be a little pricey but well worth it.. If you are hungry then you should try there buffet as they have a lot of varieties of food even for vegetarians. We will return again! my family and I ate here this week. We were the only people there ( we have to dine early with a toddler in tow) The service was great and the decor was nice. You are given Papadum right away which was very nice touch. We ordered 2 types of curry, rice and garlic Naan with one soda (price was about $50 after tax and pre tip so not cheap cheap but not outrageous either) . Everything came quickly ( almost too quick if you know what I mean) and tasted good. I wish I could do half stars here because Its not quite 5 stars but it is better than 4.
