For our Roosevelt High School Freshman Sophomore Banquet back on Valentine's Day 2016, our DJ was Mr. Toshi Nakasone from Spectrum Entertainment. We were able to learn about him and his company through a teacher at our school. Prior to the event in freshman year (we are currently sophomores), we asked him to come to play some background music at one of our lunchtime activities. He agreed, and did an awesome job. When the class council was struggling to get participants in the games that were planned, Mr. Toshi stepped in and started a "cheehoo contest." He even provided prizes for the winners of the games. We were very impressed and appreciative of his actions, and knew that we definitely wanted him to DJ our banquet in February.
After the event, we contacted him again through email, and asked for prices and any other information. We mentioned that we wanted to work around a budget of $450 as we did not need banquet to be so extravagant. He told us that he could work with $450; it would have the standard sound setup and dance lighting similar to previous banquets. However, he also offered us the extreme sound setup and the ultimate dance lighting package normally costing $2000, for $600, which we agreed to! All this communication occurred during the summer before our sophomore year, so we had a good foundation on the DJ aspect of our event. When the school year started, we made sure to stay in contact through the busy homecoming weeks, and were able to obtain a few videos of him DJing, along with his lighting and sound systems from Mr. Toshi. He also sent us a sample mixtape of popular songs at that time, which was extremely beneficial to us. At the conclusion of the chaotic homecoming weeks, the class committee was able to join Mr. Toshi for a meeting. We discussed more detail into our quotes, and decided that we would have a large sound system and lights package, that includes speakers, subwoofers, and lighting that matches the music. The invoice and contract for the event was sent quickly. There was a minor error on the contract about the venue, which he changed diligently and returned to us. We also asked if he would be open to receiving music suggestions from the student body to give him an idea of what type of music our school would like to hear at the banquet, which he happily agreed with. About six days before the banquet, we finally sent him the playlist, and he was able to get an idea of what his possible playlist could be. Mr. Toshi mentioned that a fog machine was a part of his equipment, and certain venues such as ours, Manoa Grand Ballroom, did not allow the use, however, he said that he had been able to get permission from them before, and would try to do so once again.
As we were setting up on the day of the banquet, Mr. Toshi arrived with his equipment and immediately started to set up. Unfortunately, the managers at MGB refused to allow him to use his fog machine, so I suggest when you choose a venue to pick one allowing fog. During the actual dancing, the students really seemed to enjoy the playlist, as it had a lot of the music they liked. Even though we did not have the fog, the lights and sound system really helped pump up the crowd. I don't think I've ever heard the crowd be so into the music and sing along so much.
Throughout our whole experience working with him, Mr. Nakasone always made sure to answer any questions we had. You can tell that he is really passionate about his work through his performance at events as well as customer interactions. Overall, I think he is a great DJ to contact. Roosevelt High School will definitely be keeping in touch with him in the future as we most likely would like to have him participate in our events again! read more
