I had a horrible experience at Specs Optometry in South Park. Once the optician mismeasured my pupillary distance. Twice Dr. Karen Barbadillo issued the incorrect prescriptions. After four different sets of lenses, they made me pay again for lenses with that I had already paid for because the insurance would not cover cutting them again--after three errors on their part! I finally received the correct prescription from Dr. Blumenstock. After waiting three-weeks for the glasses, the optician Jordan couldn't adjust them correctly. After five more visits where he would only perform micro adjustments, Jordon said it was "my eyes" and basically would not do it again. He basically gaslit me by lying to me that my glasses were unable to be adjusted correctly. Over and over Jordan also tried to sell me a second pair of "working glasses" for using the computer rather than trying to figure out the problem with my frames/lenses. In frustration, I finally decided to drive all the way to the Specs office in Del Mar where Giovanna, the optician, was immediately able to determine that the frame's pantoscopic tilt totally out of alignment on the left side and fixed it immediately. The Del Mar-based owner, Dr. Michelle Fitzpatrick seems to have little care what goes on in the South Park office, where there has been lots of staff turnover. Except for my savior, Dr. Blumenstock, the Specs South Park office is basically incompetent, but they do have a good selection of cool frames. read more

There are quite a bit of reviews on here already so I doubt if I have anything new to add here but I came in on Saturday for an appointment that I made on line. Everyone here is really nice and helpful. I live a quarter of a mile from this shop and I ended up here because I did a running jump to land on the couch to watch some sports ball and when I did I heard a *snap* followed by a *crunch*. I literally snapped my 14 year old prescription glasses in half with my butt. Then the only pair I have left are my prescription UV ray ones that are also 14 years old. I got in here the same week of this tragic story. I like Dr. Fitzpatrick, she is quite professional and good at what she does. I signed up for the "eyeball pictures" because I read that sometimes you can see if you have heart disease or diabetes by looking into the eyeball. Pretty cool technology and they have a pretty modern frame shop there where you can pick out frames. I asked for help and the staff member who helped me was really cool! We picked out glasses in less than an hour. I can't wait to get them. Since I paid out of pocket, I am hoping I can get them soon! I wanna be styling at work like the Granny on Tweety and Slyvester. :D read more

Do take notice to the one star reviews. There is a definite trend of a particular staff member mentioned in multiple reviews. I've experienced the same terrible service from this person and it is so unfortunate because Dr. Fitzpatrick exudes patient care as it should be and her staff does the exact opposite. At first i was very apprehensive to visit Specs even with the great reviews. After visiting a few places around San Diego, I felt like these boutique style optometry shops were just out to get your money and thats it I had some frustrating experiences with another well known place. From issues of my lenses, dr appointments, and adjustments - i was over them all! BUT my first few minutes at Specs, the staff didnt judge or have any sort of prejudice towards me. They openly listened to my worries and addressed each one of them. When it was time to do my exam, i voiced my concerns again with the optometrist and was very surprised with how understanding she was. After that we did the exam and she educated me along the whole process while assuring me i would not have the same experience. The anxiety you can get when its time to do the determine your prescription by looking through the machine and pick between "one or two", was gone. She took the time to assure me what i was seeing was accurate and didnt get frustrated or try to rush me through picking the right one. When it was time to do the eye tests, she explained why and how each test works. I walked out of her office excited and relieved that i would be getting a new pair of glasses. She walked me to the front and made sure both of the front desk staff knew my concerns. Both of them took the time to help me maximize my vision benefits and DID NOT try to upsell me to get into my wallet. I originally intended on getting one pair of lenses put into an old set of frames. Instead i got lenses ordered for both pair of frames i owned, had which saved me a ton of money. On top of that i usually wear prescription sunglasses maybe 80% of the day, even indoors due to light sensitivity. Ive had a set of Raybans for almost 10 years where i just switch the lenses. But a few other boutique shops refused to install new lenses even when i offered to sign a waiver. The staff here was so helpful that they were able to get me a brand new set of the same pair with a nice coating on each lens as well! Still cheaper than if i went anywhere else! Communication was great and they made sure my glasses fit just right before taking them home! This is a long all over the place review but the short version is that the staff is extremely friendly with lots of patience. The optometrist was thorough and addressed all of my worries/concerns. The front staff saved me lots of money by helping me navigate all options even after they closed. I will be coming here and only here from now on! read more

I don't normally take the time to do reviews but here we go. I'm new to San Diego, CA and I was definitely putting off my yearly eye exam and new glasses for work after visiting very poor quality places like stanton optical and eye glass world witch were both recommended to me by a friend. If your looking for cheap and fast those are the places for you. They do not seem to care about you personally it's about the sale. I was at the coffee shop next door and decided to slip in WOW the brands unique selection and high end finds. The store was set up in a boutique like manner. Everyone was very knowledgeable and fantastic. Set up my appointment and ended up working with Eric after my exam with the doctor billario I think is her name fantastic, fantastic team. Eric was super friendly and knew what he was doing he had lots of information on the higher end brands and had great insight on different coatings and style for my prescription and my everyday use for them. he was beyond patient and seemed to enjoy my questions and conversation. One of my nose pads was hanging on by a thread and I really needed to get it fixed. I e-mailed Specs and the Manager Jon responded back immediately asking what the problem was, and how he could help. After getting him all the info/ pictures, Jon offered to come into the office the next day to replace my nose pad. This location has been closed since COVID-19, and wont be opening back up until May 1st. I cannot tell you how important Jon made me feel, and he ended up replacing both the nose pads!!! Specs/Dr. Fitzpatrick reached out to me after my initial review and offered to replace lenses in any frame of my choosing. They confirmed that the lenses I had received previously were polarized at the wrong angle, causing the problems I mentioned. Erik worked with me on the new lenses and I appreciated that they were willing to replace them in a different frame from the ones they had originally worked with (as I already had new lenses in that frame). Initially, the replacement lenses were ordered with backside anti-glare that I felt made them cloudy and after notifying Erik that I found them unusable, he again replaced the lenses, this time without backside anti-glare. While I am finally satisfied, I received inconsistent customer service during this experience including 1) a rude worker, not Erik, at this location at my first visit in a few years, who balked at my request to notify Erik that I had arrived at my appointment even when Erik was occupied with a phone call more than 5 mins into my appointment time and had no idea I had arrived! and 2) difficulty scheduling a time to drop off my glasses for the second round of replacement lenses (Eric, nicely, suggested I had not shown up for an appointment with him, when in fact he never emailed me back accepting a time). Specs has established itself as a popular optical shop in convenient locations but does not meet the standards I have for a luxury or premium optical shop, nor do they carry the best/most exclusive brands, like my favorite, Lindberg. They outsource their lens cutting to a lab, and previously failed to quality-check the product they received. While they are working with a new lab, the inconsistent customer service, lack of ultra-premium brands and in-house lens cutting prevents me from recommending them more strongly, but I was pleasantly surprised by their willingness to rectify an issue from multiple years ago. read more

I just had my first appoitnment there and it was a great experience! The Specs staff is so nice, friendly, helpful, and informative!! The best out of any optometry I've gone to! BEWARE!!! BEWARE!!! BEWARE!!! The front staff, particularly Eric, violates HIPAA and will call your spouse or anyone else on your insurance and confirm you presence at an appointment. Additionally the following were noted as concerns: 1: Attempted to overcharge me for lenses and frames. It took over six phone calls and multiple threats to rectify the situation. Gross incompetence from multiple front staff. 2: Will not acknowledge you when you walk in. You may need to play peek-a-boo to get there attention. 3: Have a VM service, but will not return your calls. 4: Will not pick up the phone, so good luck with VM! read more

There are businesses that effortlessly astound customers with their attention to detail and superior customer service. Specs is not one of those businesses. Not only will they make every attempt to evade responsibility to correct the sale of defective merchandise, but they'll take it to another level of petty by revoking the previous discount they offered to make up for their error then attempt to charge you more than the list price of not only the manufacture's site but their own as well. Pay attention to the negative reviews here. They do not handle issues well and do not conduct their business ethically. I am a raving fan of the quality of care and service from the doctors and staff at Specs Optometry in South Park. To start he location is ideal. I originally chose this care provider because it is located on a corner in South Park that allows me to knock out 4 errands at once, including my annual eye checkup. The doctors clearly communicate what they are doing and why prior to initiating a test or asking you to perform a task. They are respectful of your time and delivery efficient, quality care. As an example of quality care, on my first visit they identified that I had been diagnosed with a prescription 2xs as strong as I actually needed. They also adjust their recommendations based on your insurance coverage and budget. My insurance coverage through my company shifted during my time with Specs Optometry, and the staff there worked with me to understand the changes to my annual care schedule and benefit coverage. Ryan took what was a very stressful situation for me this year, and injected clarity. He communicated clearly and often through the next month of checkup appointments and contact pickups to make sure that I didn't have any uncertainty and was able to navigate the changes with ease. This office and location was super awesome and kind. My fiancé and I just moved to San Diego so it's a little intimidating and a bit of a hassle to find new doctors and services. My doctor was super kind and sweet. My last optometrist in Orange County didn't really give me answers for certain things so I wanted to know if I could get answers this time. My doctor this time did and she was really kind when answering me. Probably frivolous questions but she was super sweet and explained everything to me. Front desk was super awesome too. It was a total breeze making the appointment and even more of a pleasure coming into the office. I couldn't have asked for a more enjoyable experience with the staff. This office accepts most insurances I found and even equipped with new technology like the camera to check eyes instead of dilation. Their frames selection is super trendy and cute too. Not impressed. They advertise as a family owned with a passion for eye care, but no where do the mention any passion for customer care nor do they take any pride in customer retention. I came in for an eye exam after 10 years. I never needed glasses, but I realized there can be other problems with your eyes, so it made sense. Long story short, they said I had a slight astigmatism and a slight correction needed in my left eye only. T I read later that most people don't need corrective lenses for the level I have. In fact during the testing I repeated multiple times, everything looked clear, and somehow I still ended up with a low level script. We could not complete the exam because the camera was broken and I would have to go to another location for the imaging. Upon completion of the visits I was told that I needed lenses and to get full benefit form my insurance I needed to order them that day. Fast forward , Tuesday after the visit , I went to South Park location for eye imaging and I was charged $50 for the 5 min visit. This was let of the exam from the previous week that I paid for and they could not complete because the camera was broken. After looking at all the charges, they charged the insurance on the maximum for everything including the lenses and frames. I went and had my eyes checks at another optometrist later in the week and I was told I had no need for lens correction, that my eyes were prefect and actually better than perfect in one eye. Beware, they will try to charge you and over charge you for everything, even if you have insuranc and they don't tell you that there's a charge until after the exam and surprise , you owe us ....$ . Ryan was super responsive and helpful. I called as a new customer visiting the area for a last minute contact lens order. Ryan had everything ready for me as soon as I arrived, including a free trial pair of lenses while I wait for my contacts to ship. He even cleaned and adjusted my glasses for me and put a lot of care into making sure my glasses would fit properly. They had been bothering me for the longest but they finally fit my face correctly! I've been coming here since the pandemic started and I am very happy with the overall care and service I get every time I come back. The team at Specs are caring, knowledgeable, and attentive. Dr. Barbadillo is a knowledgeable optometrist. She is patient (because I have her flip the lens a couple of times before making my decision ) and makes suggestions that'll help me maintain healthy eyes (PS. I'm terrible, I'm the, "wear the contacts for as long as I can" which I know, is terrible) in which she then offered me a sample of eye drops since my eyes become so dry. The front of the office staff (Ryan and Freddy) are friendly and welcoming. Ryan was helpful and knowledgeable when selecting my eyeglass frames, giving me different suggestions on the types of glasses that would be beneficial for me (also toddler proof). He let me go through a little more than a dozen until finding the right frames! Overall, my experience with Specs is always great and I would highly recommend them to anyone read more

I have been going to Specs South Park for years and their service is great! You can usually get an appointment within a week of needing one. They have a great show room with lots of options and brands. They carry REAN, SALT, RAY BAN, and so many more. I have purchased many frames over the years and have not been disappointed. They also have the nicest prescription sunglasses options. If you want something they don't have on their showroom, you can go check out the little Italy location as the two are connected. Specs wants to make sure you get what you want! Every time I got back on they will refit my glasses for free (sometimes they get a little stretched out) and save your glasses cleaner bottles as they will refill them all for free! read more
