First time visit and new patient for my annual eye exam here today. The office was very clean and spacious. Dr. Phan was super nice, knowledgeable and very easy to talk to. Sometimes, when meeting new doctors, I feel rushed during my visit. I feel as though the doctors just want you in and out so they could move onto their next patient. I did not feel rushed here whatsoever. Dr. Phan thoroughly answered my questions and even shared some knowledge I never knew about those with nearsighted vision. I have found my new optometrist. Horrible customer service and very bad quality lenses, both lenses failed in less than 7 months each. Not sure who let Kristen answer phones but this person is extremely condescending and very unhelpful. I had lenses made here that cost over $700 without insurance and had them replaced due to quality control on the labs part and after they failed again, they refused to do another replacement. Kristen insists on interrupting and correcting me on literally what I paid on the lenses which is a moot point considering what they are worth and what insurance covers and how fast they broke down. The lab they use refused to fix their own problem which is the coatings breaking down in less than a year. Avoid this place at all costs or you will be wasting your money. read more

I wish somebody would have told me how bad they are before going there. The lady at the front desk (both, but especially one) should not be customer facing. I tried some glasses while I was waiting to be attended, and that lady went bananas saying that I should not have touch the frames because they would have to clean them because of covid (this was on March 2023). I understand covid.. but if you don't want anyone to touch your frame glasses.. put them behind a glass.. and don't freak out at me. Then, it took me a long time to pick up my prescription, but it was definitely not 4 months.. so now I have a prescription only valid for 8 months and not 12... Easy fix .... I will never ever step in that store again. As a customer, I don't like to feel like the merchants are doing me a favor for the services that I am paying for. read more

Kristen is the best! Exceptional customer service! Parking lot is often about full its by Papa John's pizza and Golden Spoon yogurt in a mini shopping plaza. Kristen was so friendly, efficient, and clearly explained everything to me plus she brought me about 20 pairs to try on just to make sure I was happy and cleaned each pair after. I bought the first pair she showed me. Good selection of frames. I got mine in about a week faster than the two week expectation. My friend said I got a good value not sure if that is all because of my insurance. I have not had glasses for 25 years but Kristen explained to me progressives are popular. Dr. Phan was great. Knowledgeable, attentive, patient, and personable. One of the best eye exams I've had. . . What was not so great was the front office workers. The woman who was helping me select frames and lens acted like I was bothering her. What's more she charged me $20 copay when it was supposed to be $10. I only found out about the overcharge several days later when I was on the phone with VSP. I called the office to let them know their error. She wanted me to come in and show them my credit card so they can reimburse me for the overcharge. I had to insist that they just take my credit card over the phone and fix the error. They seem very inexperienced and neglectful about basic things like copays and how to work the credit card machine. I love the doctor but won't be coming back here due to the front office workers. read more

Dr. Phan was fantastic! He's probably the best eye doctor I've ever visited & I've worn glasses for almost 20 years. He explained the entire exam to me. I didn't realize I had an astigmatism, even though my current prescription was made for my astigmatism. He took the time to explain what an astigmatism meant for my vision and what to expect when I was wearing contact lenses. He gave me options when I was selecting the contacts that were right for me and listened when I explained what my day to day life with glasses/contacts was like. I'm new to the area and looked for an optometrist based on some reviews and who would accept my insurance. I'm very happy with my decision! read more

Dr. Phan is a wonderful optometrist. He took the time to explain every test and the reasoning behind every process. He listened to my concerns with my vision and was eager to find solutions. I don't need a heavy prescription but he explained it to me with this analogy (I'm paraphrasing) - Imagine you are carrying a 5 pound weight. At first, its going to be really easy, but by the end of the day, that weight is going to feel pretty strenuous. It's the same for your eyes when you are focusing on the computer screen all day. So though your prescription is light, we want to take off some of that load. Mind. Blown. Happy with the ease of making an appointment, the staff, the selection of eyewear and the whole experience. I saw Dr. Phan for the second time about two weeks ago. Dr.Phan is friendly, knowledgeable and really takes the time to explain his diagnosis. I am not giving this practice 5 stars because of the lack of responsibility from the practice after they broke my current glasses. The front desk person took my glasses to look at the lenses. She came back a couple of minutes later and said "I am sorry but your glasses broke". I understood, didn't make a big deal out of it and decided to wait until the end of the consultation thinking the practice would address it. I was shocked when they handed me a business card for an eyeglass repair shop and did not take accountability for breaking them. I walked in with a pair of functioning glasses that I had worn just prior to the appointment and left with a pair of broken glasses. Needless to say, I am not going back. read more

Got in to SD at 2AM for a wedding and found out I lost a contact. Called and Nancy spent a good 15 minutes searching through her stash to find me a sample replacement so I could go to my wedding later that day. If I lived nearby I would definitely switch to this optometry place, but will have them in mind if I ever do come to the area and need optometry services. read more

High Quality - High Cost Super easy to set an appointment over the phone. They verified my coverage in less than 3 minutes on the same call. One of the best eye doctors I have visited. He took his time and explained me my options. The exam was very comprehensive. However, it is the most expensive eye exam I have ever had in my life ($128 AFTER what my insurance paid). Highly recommend this place if you need an eye exam, glasses or contacts. The staff was super sweet and helpful and they went over all the ins and outs of our insurance and made sure we understood what we could get covered. Associate told me that if I was not satisfied or disliked my eyeglasses that NO refund would be given. Overheard the associate tell another customer that there's nothing she can do about her lens constantly falling out. I recommend that you go somewhere with a legitimate return policy and quality eyewear. Both Doctor and Associate sales driven and terse. Associate was rude. Seeing as how I've worn glasses since the third grade, I have been to so many different optometrists in my life. My parents, being cheap Vietnamese parents dutifully got my glasses from such designer savvy places like Costco and things of the sort. Now that I'm a big boy with my own vision plan, I go buy the glasses that I want. Pretty local establishment, so they are quick to remember you here. The funny thing about when I come here, is that I am so damn blind that when I try on different frames I have no idea whether or not they look good. Luckily the staff, and primarily the assistant are extremely helpful in helping me pick out frames. Hell, who am I kidding? She's picked out the frames two out of the three times I've been there. I won't lie, I've spent some solid money here. But if I have to wear the damn things everyday, they might as well be awesome. The doctor and his wife are good people, and the service is always fine to me. Maybe because we're all of the same nationality, but I don't think so. I think they are just probably just nice people, but I don't really care beacuse my PRADA and GUCCI glasses are pimp as hell. read more

So far I'm really pleased with Hillcrest Optometry. To be honest, I only chose this place as my new eye doctor because it was within walking distance to be apartment, and accepted my insurance. That being said, I think I made a good decision! Pros: -Convenient location off of University -Dr. Phan is friendly and really thorough. He gave me a couple of brands of trial contacts to make sure I got the best fit. -Smaller place - there wasn't a million people there like there is when you go to Vision World or places like that. -Staff is pretty friendly and patient as well. Cons: -Mostly designer selection = mostly higher prices. Luckily I wanted Ray Bans because I'm an embarrassing hipster and they had just the pair I wanted. -Only open till 6 and Dr. Phan isn't there that late unless someone has an appointment at that time. Anyways, they're pretty flexible with getting in appointments, so I'd recommend going in to check them out if your'e looking for a new optometrist! read more

My whole family is very opinionated, however we all agree that Hillcrest Optometry is terrific. Dr Phan is so very knowledgeable but I expect that. What I didn't expect was his explanation of all parts of the exam and how they relate to my specific issues. I am a bit indecisive when it comes to picking out flattering frames. I have not had an eye exam in quite some time and need new reading glasses. My husband goes to Hillcrest Optometry and suggested I go there too. I took his word and I am glad I did. I got there at opening time and was the first exam of the day. I met Dr. Tri D. Phan OD. He was a very pleasant man and explained every step of the exam. He asked about my husband and was very friendly. He showed me charts and diagrams to inform me of the different things they look for and why. The exam took only 45 minutes from start to finish. I was out the door, having had an exam, got frames (I had previously picked out) and paid. I got these awesome frames by Kate Spade (which is not really my style), but these glasses were perfect for my face. I felt satisfied with the level of professionalism and customer service. Previously, I had been in the area for lunch a week before and went in to check out some frames. The receptionist that helped me was very good at selecting frames for my face and once we found the perfect ones, she offered to write down the style so we wouldn't forget. I am glad I did that beforehand so I could just pick them out easily and be on my way. I like supporting small businesses and I am happy to say that this one was a good choice. I think they cater to the clientele well and even if they sell mostly designer frames, the prices are not too bad after insurance. This is what sets them apart from bigger places. A small concentrated inventory for the demographics is a smart choice. I think the previous reviewers who reported less satisfactory service may have actually helped them to make some changes. We were staying nearby on vacation and some nice sunglasses were sat on in the apartment. We walked the couple blocks from our place to Hillcrest Optometry to see if they could help us with the bent temple. The staff was super friendly and was able to fix the problem without breaking the frame. When asked how much this vacation saving service would cost they replied no charge. Very pleased with the overall experience I had here. I was able to get an appointment (as a new patient) within a few days and could walk to the office from my place in Hillcrest. I hadn't had my vision checked in a few years and was really impressed with Dr. Phan's knowledge and how thorough he was in describing all of the different tests we went through. I tend to ask a lot of questions and never felt that it was taking too much of his time to make sure I clearly understood everything. I ended up getting my first ever pair of glasses - used primarily for work as I am in front of a screen for many hours a day - and felt that the selection & quality of frames they had in-house to try on was great. I ended up being at the office past their closing time on a Friday but never felt rushed to make a decision. Amazing experience, I had recently moved to SD. My puppy jumped up and I went down to tie my shoe, she did scratch my eye , I was a little nervous whether she got me good IN my eye or not (I wasn't experiencing pain hours after so I felt like my eye was good) but I was also due for my eye exam so it didn't hurt to get it checked then. Super accommodating, and got me scheduled within a reasonable amount of time (as I did express my main reason for calling was the puppy scratch). The exam was good and thorough, and even picked out a lovely pair of sunglasses after my exam thanks to my insurance and this awesome office! The lady up front was checking someone else's insurance plan I believe I don't recall completely as I was trying different ones on, I understood and was patiently waiting, since she was on hold often she was super attentive to see if I was ready for her to unlock the next box which I was super grateful for because I was not wasting my time just waiting around. I've gone to eye doctors since I was 4 years old and Dr. Phan is one of the better ones I've been to since I've been in San Diego. He makes asking questions comfortable, takes the time to explain what he is doing and offers recommendations on products or services without pushing them or scaring you into them. Since my eyes have a pretty high prescription and I require lenses anually, he even helped me work with my insurance. His office staff enjoys assisting with choosing frames and helped me choose some cool ones. I stlll prefer to wear contacts but if I need to wear my glasses, I don't feel terrible about it. I almost didn't want to review this optometrist's office because he is so good I wanted to keep it a secret! Dr. Phan is awesome. He really puts everyone at ease and answers all yours questions. He will describe the procedures and what the results mean for you. I have tried several optometrists offices in OC & the Bay Area and this office is my favorite hands down! They don't try to sell you on things you don't need and make sure you leave with all your questions answered.
