I absolutely love this place. Don't get around Collegeville often, but when I do I make time for Speck's. Let's talk food first - awesome menu of inexpensive and tasty fried chicken. The chicken is always perfect and I especially appreciate that I can order specific pieces (I prefer thighs over breast). The fired chicken is not super greasy and it really hits the spot. The offer the standard sides - French fries, fired pickles, etc - all are great. These people know how to run a fryer! The service is manly self-serve but the staff behind the counter are always friendly and quick with a smile. Last but not least, it's a pleasant step back in time. You'll know it and love it when you see it, but everything from the dining tables to the order microphone is a wonderful reminder when fast food was still a quality dining experience. I've been to 38 states and eaten fried chicken at least once in most of them. Speck's is the best. Speck's does broasted chicken, which leaves the meat perfectly cooked and impossibly juicy. It's salty, but not too salty. It's crunchy but not too greasy. It's perfect. Their sides are exactly the kind of blue collar sides you'd expect from a chicken place. Their mac & cheese is thick and creamy, not thin, crunchy, and gentrified. Their crinkle cut fries are divine. They have an excellent selection of local, craft soda bottles. What more could you possibly want? I will say this: You should dine in. You want that chicken in your mouth the nanosecond that it's possible. Specks is a throwback in time and it looks it. It is extremely casual and entrées were served with plastic utensils in a plastic basket. I think children would love it. The chicken is fried and this is what specks is all about. Some of my friends really like it there and it is also close to home so I thought it was time for me to try it. Not many of these Mom and Pop gems left, this one certainly looks like the old classic that it is. Nothing fancy inside, just tables to sit at after you order your food. The menu has a huge amount of classic American comfort food, and they do it very well. Salty, fatty, and delicious. Burgers, dogs, sandwiches, onion rings, etc. But this is a chicken place, and they serve very strong broasted chicken. And, it's a very good value as well; I got the two piece breast dinner with french fries and mac & cheese and a dinner roll. A nice little take out joint for your fried chicken desires. 4 pieces should be good for each adult in your party. The cole slaw was the diced up kind. It just doesn't feel as healthy to me. 10 onion rings for $5 was also a bit steep but they tasted great. Fun montco fact - they have Fanta birch beer on tap! Speak's appears from the outside to be like an independently run KFC. Don't get me wrong, the quality is much better. However, that was the easiest way I could describe the set-up. You walk in, order by number of pieces of chicken, and order sides al le carte by size. You wait a few minutes and your order is served. Then you enjoy! I really love this place. The chicken is Broasted. Pressure cooked crisp and delicious with no grease. The chicken breast dinner platter my wife and I enjoyed came with a choice of two sides and a dinner roll. I had the mashed potatoes with gravy and the baked beans. My wife had the corn and Mac and cheese. Everything was good and at $7.50 a great bargain. The family often gets a few buckets of chicken when we have a party. Okay let me begin this review by saying I am not a huge fried chicken fan. In Austria there has been fried chicken for centuries which we call Backhendl and I occasionally eat it although I like it more in salads. The same goes for American fried chicken. So how did I wind up at Speck's in Collegeville which is one of the Delaware Valley's prime chicken spots. Well a friend wanted to do takeout from there (which is all you can do during the pandemic) and since I had never been there, I gladly tagged along. Now I am giving Speck's 5 stars. It is indeed a classic. First it looks the part - just like I would imagine a drive-in restaurant from the 50s or 60s must have looked like. The staff are friendly and the service is quick. I ordered the half of a broasted chicken and the quality was excellent - moist and not overly coated - kinda like Austrian Backhendl. But the sides were totally super. The corn nuggets were a revelation - sweet and juicy. Def order these! And the macaroni 'n cheese was perfectly done - nothing fancy....just comfort food at its very best. If you like chicken and the awesome sides I have described, head over to Collegeville to take-out from this long-running 50s establishment. I don't think you will be disappointed! read more

What a great little place we found on our trip today. Saw the sign that said "broasted" chicken which caught our attention enough to say let's try this place. Staff was extremely friendly and the service was more than great. Reminiscent of a 50's style "arnolds" drive in. Much larger menu than I would've expected. We decided to try the special of the day "chicken salad sandwich". If it weren't for fear of my grandmother smacking me from the great beyond, I would say it was the best damn chicken salad sandwich I ever had. But since there is that fear, it'll have to settle for the 2nd best. (Although it's the best I've had in 25+ years). It was amazingly delicious. Had to know what broasted was and tried a piece of chicken as well. OMG! It too was simply delicious. Skin and meat were melt in your mouth heaven. I should have bought more as takeout for tonights dinner. (Two sandwiches two drinks and a piece of chicken for under $15!!! ). It's an hour away but I can guarantee you I will definitely make that trek again it was that good. I remember driving past this place as a young child and begging my parents to stop for a meal , they never did. Over the past few years business has taken me past this place and I always make a point to stop and enjoy the chicken. The chicken is just so good I can't pass bye and I get angry at my parents for depriving me of this delicious chicken as a youngster. It is a time warp back to the 1950's and a great change from most lunch places you can visit. It is so unique that if you haven't tried it you are missing out. Extremely simple interior, but a fairly extensive menu. Very much what you'd think of for an old-school drive-in. They're known for the chicken, so start there. We ordered four pieces of chicken, a hot dog, a small cheesesteak, french fries, and a small soda. I've heard of broasted chicken and now take this as the chance to really see what it meant. Simplified, it's chicken that's fried in a pressure cooker (though there's more to it.) Chicken was a half chicken: breast, wing (both sections), thigh, and drumsticks. There's a very thin/limited coating, but it's got a good crunch and flavor. Don't expect a heavily breaded/battered fried chicken. It's just barely they're, light, and simple. My wife had the hotdog. It appeared small from how it was wrapped, but it's split in half and griddle fried on a roll, not a standard hot dog bun. We actually like making the split, griddled hot dogs at home. Extremely simple and fine (she ordered it plain.) I also got a small cheesesteak with fried onions since some reviews I saw mentioned it. Again, simple, but good. Cheese on the bottom, good, soft roll, nice size for a small, meat was finely chopped with the onions finely diced and incorporated (the way I like it.) Fries were your basic crinkle-cut with q crispy exterior and fluffy interior. Birch beer was at the fountain so I went with that. For simple, delicious food, I'd definitely recommend this place. New favorite fried chicken place!! This little spot is kind of in the middle of no where but their chicken is fresh and fried to perfection! I love the crisp skin and the tender chicken meat!!! You can tell their chicken is not frozen by the tenderness and flavor of the chicken My family and I got the whole chicken (8 pieces total) with fries, onion rings, and cole slaw. The chicken pieces are not huge but not too small either. The meal was just the right amount for us as we wanted to go somewhere for dessert after. The sides are not the greatest but not bad either.
