I love this place. the atmosphere is almost like you're sitting at home in your own kitchen, but at the end of the large portioned, delicious meal, you don't have to clean up! Just got back from a 9 week road trip around the U.S. and no one makes benedicts as good as this. Ahhh, good to be home.

I've never been here for lunch, but their breakfast is to die for, I always get a wide selection of things, one pancake, one stuffed french toast, one double dipped crunchy french toast (special). Breakdown, the owner is extremely rude. Not welcoming. We didn't get are drinks refilled ONCE. And again, the owner was extremely rude. We went this morning. The food was delicious but the service was sub-par. We originally say inside because there was no space on the back patio, One of the waitresses when we were sitting inside was very nice and friendly. When we switched tables as one cleared in the back we got the owner as a waitress. The owner however was very rude. We ordered a lot of food so you'd think they'd at least smile or check in on you, but no if anything she had a stink look on her face the entire time and was the last thing from welcoming! We also got the tiniest drink cups and we were all finished with are beverages before a food even came, but when are food got there are cups got no attention and stayed empty until we left. She had 3 tables, it wasn't even a busy day she was just straight rude. Very disappointing it was the owner! We plan on moving to the area and we're looking for some casual choice places to eat when we move but not entirely sold on going back due to the extremely rude owner. I've avoided Spanky's for several years just because it looks like "Kitchen Nightmare" candidate. Turns out it is. Stopped in for breakfast today, I knew it was a bad sign when half the customers had no food in front of them. Took 20 minutes after our order only to realize our order was never placed... we left. I checked the reviews AFTER going.... sounded good enough to try... One would expected uneven service due to variety of ratings. My panning the place was based upon the disappointing recipes. I could almost give it a 3 for an interesting variety and a look at other's plates: the steaks looked okay. However, the eggs Benedict sauce was pasty and bland. The "home made" corned beef hash was flavorless and cooked like a thin potato lacy pancake. I honestly couldn't swear that there was any CORNED beef in it. I'm not sure what it was. We have given this place 4 trys since the new owner has taken over. We like what she has done with the place but as for service the waitress that is always there is a joke. She is rude and if you have kids don't bring them there. If her friends come in or her regulars she will ignore you. The food is good but when I look up at the head cook Has a beard that almost touches his mid part of his chest with no hair net it makes you wonder how much hair you are eating in your food. I heard through the grapevine that there was a new owner and had to give Spanky's a new try. We were told She has been working her butt off for the last few years trying to change the image, food and just about everything else that comes with owning a restaurant. It was pretty bad before!!! The cooks and waitresses would scream at each other and the food was horrid; needless to say I was extremely reluctant to go. I decided to go ahead and give it a try . Well I was extremely surprised and, and the new manager/owner has really made a difference. It's not gourmet cooking but definitely has a family atmosphere and the food is pretty good. She really has changed this place, and We actually have been back few times. We really enjoyed the stuffed French toast, eggs Benedict, biscuits and Gravy. My father actually goes about once a week. We really love the cook with a long beard. Well done Spanky's keep up the good work. The only thing I have to say is you need to update your back yard patio area and put more shade out there. What the hell happened? This used to be such a great breakfast place. Friendly staff, great cook, wonderful food. Now, all most overnight, it has turned into the worst sort of dive. I was there about 2 weeks ago and had to wait 45 minutes for my order of Pesto and Sausage omelet. This used to be my favorite. After finally getting my order (the waitress had to return it twice as the cook kept getting the order wrong) it was horrendous. The pesto tasted tinny and stale. I suspect some horrid canned pesto sauce was used in this meal. The potatoes used to be oh so good..now...they are greasy, and heavy, and there is some overpowering spice or seasoning in it...garlic? Ugh...who wants garlic in their food first thing in the morning? Now in the defense of this place it was fairly busy that one Saturday, so we tried it again this last Friday...not many tourists at all, in fact I think there were only 4 other tables. Again...had to wait 40 minutes for French toast. Wow, what a let down. No flavor at all...just a weird rubber consistency. My husband had a scramble and both us were ill the rest of the day from all the grease that went into our dishes. I give it two stars as I like the remaining staff quite a bit. The blonde waitress that's been there ever since we started going is always very nice and was very apologetic for our meal, offering to comp us, but I refused as it would just come out of her pocket, and why should she suffer? There is another woman in the kitchen at the grill that is always friendly and works soooo hard. The new cook....well....not to be unkind...I don't think this is his calling. They also have a new waitress, she appears to be brand new at being a waitress as the other seasoned professional had to keep telling her how to do things, it looked like it was her first day on the job. So...no, I can't recommend this place. I'm not sure what direction the new management is looking for with this restaurant, but it certainly is not excellence! read more

He ordered the chicken fried steak and was so impressed we will probably be back again before we head home. Spanky's has been there a long time. At one point it was just awful (under the old managment). Because we don't have a lot of breakfast choices in Ben Lomond, we gave it a try, again. We were pleasantly surprised. The place has been spruced up, looks clean and neat. The breakfast was very good. Nothing special, just a straight up breakfast. I had scrambled eggs, breakfast links and hash browns. All was cooked just right, nice and hot. The hash browns were crispy but not greasy. The service was good, a pleasant young woman, and the food came right away. If you're looking for a regular, straight up breakfast this is a great choice. We'll be back! We went back again this week and there was a wonderful waitress, Cassy, I think, and she just owned that room. She was alone and handled all of us with such a great attitude. We just watched her work through the room, getting people this or that. Our breakfast was great. Same consistent and well cooked. Way to go Spanky's. So glad to have a good, local breakfast place that is open during the week! Bring cash, that's what they prefer. read more

Spankys is my favorite place to go for breakfast I only order one thing and it's the chicken fried steak breakfast the steak covered my whole plate it comes with your choice of potatoes or hash browns equally delicious eggs toast biscuits gravy I've only been able to finish the whole thing once the food is great but the atmosphere is also great the waitresses are all beautiful and sweet it's the kind of place you walk into and everybody knows your name if you get up to our neck of the woods stop in for some breakfast or lunch they don't do dinners there. read more

Spanky's ROX! The food is always excellent, and more importantly for those of us who like to eat, it is abundant. Biscuits and gravy, corned beef hash, potatoes and of course the eggs! (There is no need to get all at the same time of course, but two or three thrown together on a plate would be great.) The counter is best and out of the way of the tables on weekends when it gets crowded. Spanky's has not changed much in as long as I can remember. Used to go to Spankys a lot as a special Sunday breakfast treat. ... won't be going back. They are under new managment. We had to wait a LONG time to be seated and we left hungry. I asked for scramble eggs and french toast on the side. I received a small plate of eggs, no side of potatoe or toast. The french toast was not what they used to serve.. just one piece of regular bread all alone on a big plate. They were so frazzled we didn't bother to complain while we were there. DIdn't seem to know what they were doing and the food has gone downhill.. what there was of it.. My partner had the eggs benedict and bacon. Said that there was hardly any ham and the bacon was stone cold.. the eggs greasy.. he didn't feel very good afterward and we soon needed to find another place to eat cause we were hungry. Disappointed to spend over $30 and still be hungry and in his case rather sick. read more

Visited on Saturday, July 5th, 2014, at around 1:00 PM. Ordered the chicken-fried steak & eggs with toast ($10.95), and coffee. Good food, great value (the steak was huge), and friendly staff. The place is clean and pleasant, and service is quick. The only downside is the noise level -- and there were just a handful of customers present during my visit. The dining room has very harsh acoustics, which is made worse by the constant slamming of the front door (with a string of bells attached), the staff's loud dropping of dishes in the kitchen, and customers' not using their "inside voices." But sitting on the patio would fix all of that. Spanky's is, for my money, one of the best places to have breakfast in the San Lorenzo Valley/Scotts Valley area. read more

My girlfriend and I dropped in today for a late breakfast. It is a popular spot, as obvious by all the occupied tables. Still, that did not stop the only waitress there working all those tables, Sue, from greeting me with a warm smile and hello as soon as I entered, despite the fact she was busy. She seated me immediately and, as I waited for my girlfriend to turn up, promptly brought me a very good cup of coffee. The cook, Jeff, was equally as accommodating and gracious, taking time to come to our table and answer my girlfriend's question about the ingredients and preparation of a dish. Food quality matched the service. What a delightful experience. Nice to find people who truly care about customers and creating a good experience. read more

We went to this cafe a couple of weeks ago for the very first time and the food and service was really good. We went there again this morning and our omlettes were on the wrong plates, the toast was burned and dry, the potatoes were very dry, and the salsa looked like it came out of a can of stewed tomatoes. The waitress and cook was a different team from the last experience but the food should be consistant. I would like to try this place again but am really reluctant and probably won't go back for a very long time.
