We love the French Toast at Heavenly! It's cooked in the skillet perfectly until it has that lovely golden brown coloring. It's the perfect mix of crunchy edges and soft texture in the middle with a blend of cinnamon spices. We always try to order other breakfast items but tend to go back to the French Toast time and again. We love the dining options of indoors during the winter months and lovely tables outside with warmer weather and temperatures. The service is prompt and fast. We never wait too long for our orders. Love this place. I can say it can be a hidden gem. It is family run business and has been around for for decade. They serve American style dishes which you will find at most of American Diner place. We arrived for brunch/lunch and it was busy that time. They have indoor and outdoor sitting and we chose outdoor. It was nice sitting area where you can freely speak. We order Benedict's Place, Don Juan Salad, just two eggs, potato and taost, extra bacon and chicken fried steak. the portion is good and price wise, they are reasonable. The food was yummy. My family and I were visiting Santa Cruz and Big Sur over Labor Day Weekend. Heavenly Roadside Cafe is a popular place. We arrived around 10 am and waited about 10 minutes to be seated. We ordered the following items: huevos rancheros (9/10). The sauce was tasty! The short stack of pancakes was amazing!. The Rico Suave burger with a side salad, 8/10. Last but not least, the cab sandwich and bacon with fries. 9/10. The service was excellent, and the staff was friendly and helpful--plenty of parking available. This is a cute cafe literally on the side of the road. I felt transported to a small town in the Midwest when I walked in. The service was great. People were friendly and attentive. Food came out fast. And they served breakfast dishes all day, so my friend and I both got breakfast for lunch! The portions were huge that I had to take part of it home. We even got their special lemonade with mango purée, which was perfect for a hot day. I knocked off a star only for the lack of A/C and decor, but those items are pretty small. While visiting Santa Cruz, we discovered Heavenly Roadside Cafe while looking up breakfast places. Such a hidden gem! I ordered a belgian waffle with fresh fruit and it was so crispy and buttery! The fruit was all fresh and delicious. My boyfriend ordered an omelette with bacon and avocado with potatoes on the side. It was a great portion and he liked it a lot! First off..they give you a lovely glass bottle of water for the table. My wife and I ordered coffee. Amazing coffee!!! So bold and not a tad bitter! After the first sip of coffee, I knew this was going to be a treat. I ordered the Portuguese omelet. It came with potatoes and I substituted toast for a biscuit and a side of gravy. The omelet was incredible. I gave a bite to my wife and she said it was "like fireworks in your mouth"...That's totally my opinion! The potatoes were perfect. The biscuits was lovely and the gravy was next to perfect. Everything was so fresh. My wife had the classic eggs ben...they definitely don't skimp on the fresh hollandaise sauce. She loved it. We walked away feeling full all day, but not "food coma" tired. We talked about how wonderful the food was all day. I can't wait to go back and try more. Instead of turning us away, they seated us in an already closed area and served us quickly. Thanks to them! We ordered two burgers. Mine was a regular burger and was HUGE. At least a 1/2 lb. Cooked to order--medium. Hubs ordered a bacon and blue burger, and he said it was delicious! Fries were also hand cut and had skins on. Nice touch! We have been eating here every April for numerous years. This year we were very disappointed with the food. The eggs appeared to be powdered eggs with to much water added. So, first let me say I've been to this place a good 8 times. Always have had good service. Went this morning for breakfast, just one person. I sat outside and waited. It took at least 10 minutes for me to get a menu, this was after I had waited patiently. Finally I asked twice for a menu. Then it was a good 15 minutes to order. Also let me say there were two other tables with customers. They had both been served already. To say that they were totally unorganized is an understatement. Also there were no less than 4 employees coming and going all this time. What did come very quickly was the bill. Again after waiting for someone to take my money, I finally went in inside and paid. For our 1st time here, we tried: * Crab Cake Salad - The 2 Maryland style crab cakes were awesome. Good size, fresh & tasty, minimal filler. Over a bed of fresh mixed greens salad with citrus slices, lemon vinaigrette, side of toasted sourdough. We'd come back for this one. * Huevos Rancheros - Eggs, black beans, salsa, light sprinkle of shredded cheese, over lukewarm corn tortillas. Nice fresh avocado slices on top, served with a side of breakfast potatoes. Perhaps a side of Mexican-style rice would have been more appropriate. They checked on us frequently enough to ensure our coffee was refilled and food came out very quickly. Speaking of food, it's scary how good their breakfast is. I ordered a no-frills Cali scramble and it's like I had great breakfast for the first time. The eggs were fluffy and without any grease; the bacon pieces were abundant and flavorful; the avocado was ripe without any brown pieces; the toast was perfectly toasted; the potatoes were deliciously seasoned and had plenty of crispy parts making it impossible to stop eating them. It blew my mind how good this simple breakfast. Worth a detour for sure! This was also the first time we brought our dog with us. Their outdoor patio is dog-friendly and not too crowded, which was great for his outing. Except for the occasional bark to greet the waiter, our pup did well.
