    Breakfast splurge

The mother in law had a gift card and I am so glad we took advantage! The service was fast and frequent. I got the chicken and waffle. A nice rendition and I would order it again. the hubby liked his eggs and sausage. The coffee cup was never empty (or half empty) and the servers were friendly. Highly recommend for groups! Will be back for more!!!

We had reservations for 7 pm and upon arrival the restaurant was full - this is how you know it must be good. It remained busy throughout the evening too. They had fun spritzes on the menu, I tried the peach basil one and enjoyed it. It wasn't too sweet at all, was tart and crisp. We started with a special they had running for the evening, it was a halibut carpaccio served with avocado mousse and mandarins. The chef let us know he caught the fish on the beach in Capitola, I thought that was pretty rad. It was super fresh, light and delicious. We also shared the prosciutto pizza as a starter as well, so tasty! Literally everything was so good. The crust was easy to chew and eat, flavors were savory and sweet. For entrees my husband ordered the duck ragu and this was my highlight - wish I ordered this for myself as well! Savory goodness and as the dish cooled down the sauce thickened more. I had the mushroom campanelle because once I read truffle hollandaise I was like I must try this. I love mushrooms so anytime I see a dish with them I'm sold. I wish I could've added steak as a protein with it, but overall a yummy pasta dish as well.

Started with a passionfruit bellini and ordered the Country Fried Steak and eggs. I liked that I could sub the home potatoes for really yummy french fries. The biscuit was fluffy but also a bit dry at the same time. Everything else was really tasty!

The coffee was pretty mediocre, nothing memorable, especially for a place that seems known for its baked goods. The cinnamon roll was honestly disappointing. It lacked flavor and wasn't as soft or fresh as you'd hope, especially for something that should be a standout item. The one redeeming factor was the blueberry muffin, which was actually really good. Moist, flavorful, and easily the highlight of the entire visit. Overall, it's a decent stop if you're already nearby, but not worth a special trip or the price point in my opinion.

Having done that, we all agreed, we were a bit underwhelmed, and would probably stick to Vim in the future. I will say, start to finish, their service was great. It's easy to have great service when the place is so small, but that doesn't mean everyone does. Service was great. I was rather less impressed, though, given how relatively small the menu already was, and how early in the evening we were there, that they were already out of several things, including the only appetizer I had personally been particularly interested in trying, so we just ordered entrees. The booth table we were sitting at also felt a bit cramped - the tables by the window looked a bit nicer. They did bring complimentary bread - but we also all agreed that their complimentary bread was almost, though not quite, inedibly salty. I definitely did appreciate, at least, given that obviously all their wine is going to be expensive, at a place like this, that they did have a fairly substantial selection of local craft beer, including multiple local craft ciders. If I had been more impressed by the food, I would definitely have been super happy about that. Cider is so versatile, and not on nearly enough menus.) Anyway, I tried their braised short rib dish - it was... good. I think that's really the best way to describe it - I enjoyed eating it, but I still have random memories occasionally how great a short rib dish I had several years ago at Vim was, and I really don't even remember exactly what this one was garnished with or anything. I had no complaints, but there wasn't anything about it that would make me specifically want to come back, nor to have that amount of money spent, even if it was my parents', when they could spend it elsewhere. (My mom made similar comments about the fish entree she ordered.) That said, since we didn't order any appetizers, we did have room to share a dessert, their panna cotta with fruit, and we all agreed, the dessert was definitely the highlight. Excellent panna cotta.

I had the spicy Devil's Ginger vodka martini with the calamari appetizer and with dinner, the Lava Top Sauvignon Blanc ($13), a perfect complement to the swordfish. My swordfish was perfectly sautéed in a tapenade beurre blanc sauce ($40) with deliciously creamy and decadent polenta and buttery chopped bok choy. The way they served the bok choy was perfect- never change it. It was artsy, buttery and didn't look wilted. My son had the grilled boneless pork chops (two boneless chops) with fries and smoky beans ($28), loved. He devoured the berry fruit crisp à la mode for dessert ($12) and I had two small bites: It was like granola over compote with ice cream. I didn't complain. The best part was the incredibly flawless service. We could have felt rushed dining since it was towards the end of service. Instead, Genevieve paced the meal perfectly so we felt spoiled and unrushed. Next visit I would love to dine in their "secret garden" courtyard; it was beautiful. Offerings were diverse and plentiful. Once again, I was struck with wanting all of the things. My server was accommodating with my request to taste two different white wines and two different reds throughout my meal. I opted for the Chardonnay to go with the special halibut crudo, which was outstandingly prepared. The fish itself was a bit on the fishy side (especially for halibut) but I don't fault the restaurant. The treatment of the fish was perfection. I'm a bit of a Caesar salad aficionado and considered skipping Mentone's mostly because I'd just enjoyed one the night before. But I just had to try it and I'm glad I did. It was certainly not traditional but it was very well made, even better with the added anchovies ~ although I did suffer some sticker shock when I got the bill and found that those little fish were $2 each. Ooof. Switched gears to some Pinot Noir and went for the ricotta sage browned butter ravioli, which were fabulous. I probably should have stopped there but ordered the tiramisu and it was a miss for me. Just way (way) too boozy and totally lacked balance, although it was pretty. All in all, a very nice experience ~ although very pricey for a single diner. Appetizer, salad (with the pricey little fishies), entree, dessert and two 5-ounce pours of wine left my wallet $185 lighter (with tax, tip and 4% kitchen wages surcharge). I know everything is very expensive these days, but whoa. Definitely a special occasion kind of place!
