Very rare find. Definitely a mom & pop diner or stall I say mom & daughter. Very hard working and still serve your food with a smile and a hot plate of yummy freshly made breakfast/brunch. Very affordable and it's great to see a place like this booming with business so make sure you get in line asap. Seating at the table top or a few tables to choose from. IMHO This is a cute locals favorite, right around the corner from Gayle's. IYKYK They're open for breakfast and lunch from 7 - 2:15. The owner/proprietor (I think) warmly greeted us and told us to choose our table. There are about 8 tables in this cozy establishment, or you can sit at the counter and watch the Cook cook! We were lured here by the reviews of the hash browns. I am not an afficionado of hash browns, I just know what I like. I expect my hash browns to be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and not greasy. These fit the bill! Super yummy! My husband and I shared the "three extra-large ranch eggs any style with hash browns and English muffin, and choice of bacon, sausage or ham" for $17.95. I opted for scrambled eggs, and bacon. Normally I'd eat fried eggs, but I only eat those when I'm staying at home. Again, IYKYK. My eggs were a tad rubbery, but I ate 'em. The four pieces of bacon were thick and flavorful! You already know the hashbrowns were my favorite on the plate! This plate's portion was perfect for the two of us! We certainly got bang for our buck! Our friends ordered the Popeye omelet; spinach, onion & cheese, with mushrooms added, $17.95, and the Strawberry French Toast special. Suffice it to say, they cleaned their plates as well. Friendly service, good food, homey vibe. What more can you ask for? read more

Very small portions for what you're paying for. Bacon is very very crispy which is great if that's what you like but just a heads up. We had a very long wait for pretty simple orders. I ordered a sandwich that was almost cold whereas the rest of my party had omelettes which were all extremely hot when they came out. The staff were really nice and friendly but I wouldn't come back. read more

WOW this place was quite the experience... We walked in and were IMMEDIATELY greeted with an instant whiff of oil and grease, since the kitchen isn't separate from the dining area. This doesn't usually bother me, but the smell seemed way more potent than usual, and if you're sensitive to this kind of environment, might be best to skip this place. Anyway, the food here was really tasty, and you can literally watch as everything is being freshly prepared. This is such cute little business and it really feels like you're in a small town diner :-) Overall it's nothing fancy or amazing, but a really fun and unique spot for a quick bite! read more

Nothing trendy here- just good ol' American breakfast cozy vibes. Service is top notch and you're always greeted with a family friendly smile. Found this place in Yelp and it did NOT disappoint! It is one of the cutest little restaurants I've been to. Service was amazing and the food was stellar. Yikes - we had breakfast here recently and it was less than memorable. The omelettes and the pancakes were just ok - but the hash browns were feeble. They were not crispy and tasted heavily of stale oil. It's surprising that a place that specializes in breakfast can mess up hash browns this badly. Service was decent. But we probably won't return. Do yourself a favor and eat some where else. The smoke from cooking the food is overwhelming and it's not particularly clean. The breakfast for the price is not great. Used to be great - kinda going downhill lately though. The last few times I've been there I've run into flies in the ice (twice btw, which means their machine is prob dirty) and they served us rotten ketchup that smelled awful and was clearly well past expiration. It was so old and in the sun that the vinegar had started to separate. Also the prices just keep climbing and climbing. To the point we've decided to go to other places when we go out for breakfast now. Think an omelette with a few ingredients and hash browns was about $20 last time we were here. The service is still not bad and the food is tasty, if a bit pedestrian for the price. Shame cause this place is a staple of the area and we used to go here all the time for a quick and cheap breakfast. But now we all go 'meh remember the last few times...' and go somewhere else these days. read more

I'm giving this four stars for one simple reason. This is exactly what you want in a small mom & pop diner. (I think this is a mom and daughter duo) Everything done on a flat grill with lots of melted butter. Fresh fruit and neverending coffee. The Mom and daughter hustling to cover a large amount of people was impressive. One cook, one dishwasher. There was a wait for a table, and a wait for the food, but we didn't mind. read more

Just paid 18.95 for the worst chicken fried steak breakfast I have ever had. Some kind of out of the box frozen meat type substance. 18.95 is a lot for a breakfast entree, so I expected it to be made in house, alas they are charging exorbitant money for frozen crap. read more

I'm almost hesitant to post this because I don't want this gem to get bombarded but this is THE BEST breakfast place in town!! It doesn't look like much driving by or when you walk in but it's the feeling I get when I'm there. It has an "old school" feel to it. It's cozy and the staff is beyond friendly. Carol, the owner, and her daughter or always there and they're are the best. The food is always great!!! I miss being able to go in and sit down to eat and hanging out there. They're still open for pickup and I believe they now have some outdoor seating. read more

I just got turned off by the unsanitary cooking conditions! The lady that is cooking is also on the phone AND touching money AND clearing people's used plates at the counter....and then turns around and grabs omelette ingredients and plates almost every food item with her bare (now dirty) hands. Her hair isn't tied back either. Gross. Don't think I'll be back. I think the staff needs a refresher course of proper food handling. I will say that the waitress was super sweet and friendly. read more

We wanted waffles so we called up before we got there and they said they had waffles. Well, I don't know what Belgium waffles are and these were not. They were very thin and dry and we couldn't even cut them easily with our knife. We didn't care for the coffee. My wife couldn't get her walker into the bathroom. If I could add 10 more stars I would. Since I've been coming here to capitola for the past 8 years now, the cook house was my First introduction to what a mom n pop cafe is. And I love it. It's a support for local business. They have the best attitude the best atmosphere. The best cook and service. What's great is that it's simple. Breakfast is always good. Lunch is always good. Our favorite is the Chicken Fried Steak. Highly suggest it. We bring all family and friends here. I highly recommend visiting the cook house for breakfast and lunch when you visit capitola. They will take care of you! read more

Great spot for Breakfast! Popped in twice while visiting my mom who lives nearby. Everything was delicious, well prepared and the staff treated us like family from the get go. The viral peach ice cream did not disappoint. Reminds you of a Mamba candy or HiChew. Big win! Even the texture was fun. Too dense and firm to be an ice cream but just shy enough from being a gummy, if that makes sense.

The blueberry pancakes however were good a good size and came with 3. I did think the pumpkin muffin was fire and my bf said the cinnamon roll was excellent so maybe it's their baked goods that are part of what makes this place so popular? I didn't think the amount of food we got was that much of a value as it was a $60 breakfast. Other downsides for me was the parking situation which is common in SC. We found a spot about 2 blocks away. Also, the bathroom is outside and in dire need of a makeover. Lastly, they don't take cards. It's cash or check only. WTH? I haven't seen a restaurant take checks since I was a kid so that's been a minute, lol. Overall I can't really see myself returning other than to get the pumpkin muffin or cinnamon roll. Unfortunately, the lack of service left such a poor impression that we decided to leave. We've always enjoyed East End, which makes this review difficult to write, but customer service is a big part of the experience. Hopefully this was just an off night, but it was disappointing enough that we won't be returning anytime soon.

I asked if he is on the clock and he said I will be in a few minutes. Doesn't seem like a good idea to be wasted at work. The owner is a super sweet gal and you can tell she's pouring her heart and soul into this spot. It has a perfect view of the harbor while you enjoy some good eats. Even though this guy was wasted today, it won't detour me from returning for the 5 star food flavors! We've always enjoyed East End, which makes this review difficult to write, but customer service is a big part of the experience. I love this place! When I read the past reviews I wonder what folks' expectations are in regards to a small, local breakfast/lunch diner? I agree that they can get busy, and no diner should be ignored--but it can happen. I know I'm not perfect... Very fair prices, classic diner food, classic diner coffee. I hesitate to use the term "greasy spoon," but that's the point--sometimes I WANT that exact experience. The Cook House, and the family that runs it deliver every time. I metered back to four stars for one perpetual issue I see, which is the overcooking of omelets; pretty much any omelet I either see or order is cooked too much, with a brown "crust" cooked into the egg all the way around. I believe that any good omelet has a measure of delicacy and restraint, and that eggs demand a light touch, be them scrambled, over-easy or in an omelet. I'm sure some folks prefer that "well done" style, but I also believe that a majority of their customers would find a lighter touch to be a good thing! The star is for the friendly staff, the food was horrible and even after 10 h my tummy and my husbands tummy are still upset. I had an omelet with bacon and the hash browns. Since I was facing the cook I could see him pouring several ladles of fat over the hash browns and the bacon is deep fried. Who does that? I could have overlooked the out dated interior, the noise, the wait and the not so clean restaurant if the food was OK but it is just fatty/greasy beyond enjoyable. read more

I have been going to the Cook House for over 20 years, and it is always the same good food and good service. Yes, it's small, and yes, there are waits on weekends, but it's always well worth it. The food is prepared right there and one can always be assured it's fresh, not microwaved, and special orders or exceptions are handled with a smile. I'm disappointed to see all the mixed reviews about this place. I have been coming here since a child. The owner (Carol) is always smiling and she also cooks too. Weekends are busy so come early morning if not be prepared to wait outside. Very little seating inside, I always order the 4 egg omelet for sausage and avocado.
