What a fun stop! We made the drive to Spangler Candy World as part of a day trip, and it was well worth it. The visitor center is bright, nostalgic, and full of fun displays celebrating so many classic candies. My husband was definitely in his element. We left with Dum Dums, Bit-O-Honey, Peanut Bunnies, candy wafers... and apparently two T-shirts! The sneak! I only realized the second shirt made it into our bag when I looked at the receipt later. The staff was friendly, everything was clean and well organized, and there were plenty of unique gifts and candy you don't always find in stores. Even if you're not a huge candy person, it's a fun place to visit for the nostalgia and the history. If you're looking for a unique day trip in northwest Ohio, I definitely recommend stopping at Spangler Candy World. We had a great time and would happily visit again. read more

Driving through this area I spotted this newer attraction and thought it would be fun. Strangely when we entered the store /museum no one was there except for two other customers. We looked at some of the displays on their history while waiting to see if a worker would show up so we could watch the factory tour movie. Eventually a very friendly worker appeared from the back and we bought two tickets ($3 each but it should be free) for the 15 minute movie. The 10 mins of the movie that actually showed the production was very good and the pumped in aromas were a fun touch. The rest of the movie was goofy and for the kids. We didn't play any of their video games which were geared to kids. That is their main audience afterall. We did purchase a few bags of goodies but none of their famed dum dums. Such a sad remnant of what used to be. Definitely a tourist trap unless you love Dum Dum suckers. Cheesy arcade games replace the real factory experience. The candy you can buy other places. Not one person greeted us in the store. You can pay extra to watch a movie of how candy is made. It was a wasted trip. read more

I've always wanted to go after seeing it on tv a few times and not living that far away. I have to say the experience wasn't great. The shop they have downtown has very limited candy, I expected more, like an old time candy shop vibe. This was boring and basic. Even the little interactive displays were basic and I don't think kids would be entertained more than a few minutes. The water tower in town is the best part. Only go if you're passing through. This is not a destination trip. I feel like a dum dum for thinking it was. read more

Poor plastic wrap design. You cannot open wrapper without breaking candy cane. I'd rather have a loose wrapper and broken candy than tight wrapper and struggling to open the darn candy cane. It's a shame because I really enjoy rainbow candy cane flavors. I wrote to Spangler and was treated with a brush off and instructed how to open plastic. read more

Growing up around Boston, I always looked forward the Valentine's Day conversation hearts candy; some people love them, some don't but no matter how anyone feels about them, they are nostalgic and part of the excitement was seeing what that year's hearts would "say". Following NECCO's bankruptcy (the original owner/manufacturer) Spangler bought them but didn't have enough time to get them into production for 2019. However, do a Google search and you will find LOTS of promises to have them ready for 2020. I was in the grocery store earlier today and THERE THEY WERE... right in front of me! I grabbed a box so that I could see this year's sayings and decide whether I would use them on cookies or for decorating a cake. Imagine the seasonal disappointment when they said NOTHING. NOTHING at all :( I looked on Facebook, and a lot of people posted the same thing. Didn't anyone happen to notice millions of blank hearts zooming down the assembly line? I stopped by because I was driving west on i-80 and had looked up things to see on the Roadside Attractions website. It's maybe 10 min drive from the highway. There's a small store selling candy (as you can imagine) and tshirts and bags. They also showcase some history about the company's origins and the different generations of owners. The tour is every half hour and costs $6 for adults. You wear a hairnet and ride a train where you can't take photos. But the conductor takes you through the entire factory except for where they make the candy bc of FDA regulations. I went on a weekday and I was the only one on the tour. I thought it was worth the detour just because I grew up eating dum dums and it was pretty cool to see how it's made and its history. read more

I toured Spangler Candy Co. as a kid probably 30 years ago. The tour was pretty cool, you could see the machines folding and kneading the hot candy prior to it being stretched and molded into lollipops and candy canes. The smell was amazing, watching the workers flip these huge globs of sugary goodness so they were properly mixed and aligned for making the right candies was pretty cool! WAS. pretty cool. From Cincinnati, headed to my lake in NE Indiana (where the Spanglers also have homes(!)), I decided to stop through Bryan and get another tour with chronologically "adult" eyes. $5 tour fee. Ok, whatever. They take us to a little trolley, one of four. Total of 4 people on tour, fine. Basically the trolley takes you through the packaging, palletting, and warehouse parts of their operation. Because everyone wants to see how bags of candy get placed into boxes. And, OMG!!! Those boxes get stacked on pallets! WAIT! JUST WAIT!!! Those pallets are then stored in a warehouse with OTHER PALLETS OF BOXES!!!!!!! And you get to see all of these boxes! Exactly what you want to see on a candy factory tour! BOXES! Screw Willy Wonka, I didn't see one box in that whole movie. Seriously, lame tour. There were some videos on the trolley that showed the mixing/molding room that they called "The Kitchen" but claimed it was due to health codes that they couldn't tour us through there. I get that, but why not put a tour lane on the other side of a plexiglass wall that shows how the candy is folded and manipulated and stretched to be made into the final product?? THIS is what people want to see in a candy factory. The Making of Candy...... So, if you've never seen boxes being loaded onto skids, or you've never been into a warehouse, this might be intriguing. You can YouTube "candy making" to see the equivalent videos shown during this tour, otherwise save the $5, and the drive out-of-the-way. This tour is lame now. Oh, and you are forbidden to take pictures or video for some reason. In this Day and age of hashtags promoting EVERYTHING, you'd think that a company like this would not only allow pics to be posted on social media, but would encourage people to promote their products/tour with special hashtags to use to identify themselves out there. These guys made a business out of cheap candy and by cheap I don't mean cost, I mean by cutting corners to put out nickel candy for a penny. They pulled together all their capitol to purchase the Necco brand in hopes of raising their stock. All they did was sully the name of a once legendary candy. Not only did the candy ship without it's trademark sayings, the candy didn't taste the same or have the same consistency. When I contacted them to share my concern, I got a less than personal message that they had constructed to send to the thousands of unhappy customers. When you have candies like Smarties and Dum Dums, it's clear you're not nearly as smart as you want the public to believe. read more

We stopped by this place expecting a mere candy store. What I was NOT expecting was a candy factory and museum as well. Spangler Candy Co is home of the Dum Dum sucker. Additionally, they make nearly all of the candy canes in America, including the specialty flavored candy canes (Starburst, Jolly Rancher, Smarties, Jelly Belly, etc.) For a mere $5 per adult, you too can don a hair net, hop in a trolley car, and get a guided tour of the factory. While the closest you get to the cooking process Is via video, you can see the wrapped suckers racing down the conveyor belts to be packaged and boxed. Very cool. You can check out the latest experimental dum dum flavor and provide feedback. Also, if you have a favorite dum dum flavor -- and who doesn't? -- you can buy an ENTIRE tub of that particular flavor. Came to this delightful little Confectionary store/tour with a couple of lil ones I. Town the oldest being 10. So a few things about this location is that it does give a nice tour that costs $5 I believe and it's on a little train with videos and funny comments from the conductor. Fun things to see about this sugary delight being made as well. The staff is really friendly and there is a small wrap around around the store Counter with artifacts from days past on how it all started. Staff is willing to snap pictures of you with other staff members which is fun after the train ride. You must wear a hair net too. There is a store with minimal souvenirs and candy. It's a super tiny store and the whole tour including time spent in the gift shop will prob only consume 11/2 hours of your time which is about how long it took us to get there. But it was a fun summer tradition hat we try to do each year to different candy factories aground the Midwest. This wasn't the worst but wasn't the best. Worth going at least once in a child's Lifetime. read more

While visiting nearby Sauder village we made a detour to Bryan to the Spangler candy company... $5.00 for a tour and while you don't see the cooking (health code regulations) but do watch a video while on trolly ride through packaging etc. Who knew they do 10,000 dum dum sucker an hour and largest producer of candy canes circus peanuts and those hard to find safty pops ...look through the museum and if you have a favorite can buy a tub of one flavor of sucker and kids and adults alike will be hitting the sample jars...and don't feel like you need kids to tour...just some kids at heart. read more

This is such a fun place to come on a tour. $5 per adult, $3 per kid 6-18, and 5 and under are free. For such a small price, you can have so much family fun! No, you don't see the candy kitchens, but you do see a lot of the machinery processing and packing their products. I think seeing conveyor belts full of Dum-Dums made my kids' summer! After the tour of course we bought a couple bags of Dum-Dums to take home. Yum! read more
