Like the name implies, this is where you get all things spandex! The service is good and the prices are alright. Bring cash so you can negotiate! There's a second floor that houses solid colors, while the first floor has multicolored and patterned elastic fabric. And I'm talking about the weirdest, most random patterns and designs I've seen, ranging from fruit to geometric shapes to whatever you can think of! If you're going in person I bet it's great but highly don't recommend this company for online orders. My order shipping was as much as my fabric and when I didn't recognize my order because of their shipping process they won't refund the shipping. I've had to contact the company a couple times over email about my order and when I finally called it was too late for the event I need the fabric for. As well as they wanted me to pay for shipping again making a $25 purchase $75 with their shipping process. I'm sad because their fabric looks great but their customer service and shipping process makes me wish I was closer because online is not fabulous. read more

Spandex House has a great variety of stretch fabrics. Much more than the other fabric stores in the area. They always have what I need! The reason why it's not getting 5 stars is because the staff is always rude, dont want to assist me or don't want to be there whenever I visit. Some of the other fabric stores aren't as big or have as much fabric as SH, but the staff is always nice and willing to help. SH is the opposite. I only go to SH if I have no other choice. Great products, staff helpful rarely. They are always very weird and awkward with my girlfriend whenever she goes there without me (her boyfriend) and it makes her not want to go alone. She has been asked repeatedly if we are dating, been told "let us hope he doesn't leave you" and other honestly whack ass things. Spandex house. I mean everything is spandex. You have your plain, sequins, patterns, net. You name it they have it. They have 2 way stretch and four way stretch. They have shiny or muted like cotton. They have every color you can think of purchasing. When you walk through the main doors you will see multiple patterns. The room to the right has different types of solid colors to choose from. I never made it upstairs. I think it would have been too much for me. I was looking for a red color, and I became overwhelmed by the many different reds to choose from out of the bunch. I ended up deciding between to different fabrics and I chose a red with some shimmer. My cutter was very nice and talked about the fabric to me a little bit. Overall, my experience was fine and I was able to make a purchase with a small discount. Thanks for the help and I will be back in the future for everything spandex. read more

I went on a scouting mission to Spandex House recently and was NOT disappointed. I didn't end up finding what I was specifically looking for (cotton lycra 2 x 2 ribbing for a sweatshirt) BUT I spent an hour wandering around the store and fondling the fabrics for future reference. There's definitely a LOT more in the store than what they show on their website. What they have: This place is HUGE, and it's pretty much ALL spandex-blend apparel and theatrical and performance fabrics of (almost) every variety! The first floor is mainly printed and sparkle fabrics of all kinds, organized by type of print (not necessarily by fiber content). On the left-hand side of the first floor they had a section each of polkadotted fabrics, floral fabrics, flame fabrics, skull fabrics, striped fabrics, camouflage fabrics, etc. Most of the fabric is activewear or swimwear or dance/theatrical fabric, but I found some cotton lycra blend prints (not many) in among the pure spandex and nylon-spandex. I definitely have to come back here when I attempt to do some swimwear sewing, the selection of swimwear prints and solids is huge. On the right-hand side of the first floor is mostly much more glitzy and brightly-colored sparkly or iridescent spandex-blend (or pure spandex) fabrics. There also seemed to be a section of printed matte poly (ITY) jerseys (in a wide range of fabulous prints) towards the back of the left side of the store, I will have to come back for materials for a DVF-style wrap dress! On the third floor (they call it the second floor) there is a whole lot more, but mostly solids. They had quite a bit of straight-up spandex in every possible hue, of course. I was more interested in the cotton lycra and rayon lycra--amazing range of hues and weights, and it felt very soft/stretchy and very high quality. They also had a huge range of colors of nylon tricot. And they had wide range of stretch velvet in various shades. I also saw some stretch netting fabrics. There was one paltry little section of striped cotton lycra upstairs but I wasn't crazy about the colors or the feel of the fabric. I did end up finding some striped cotton lycra downstairs in the striped print section that was a lot nicer. What they DON'T have. I came here looking for red stretch cotton-lycra ribbing. None was to be had, I asked but they only had white. They also didn't have a huge array of cotton lycra prints--mainly just solids. And they didn't seem to have any silk or wool lycra jersey. I bought 3 yards of soft gray-and-white striped cotton lycra to make a dress. It was $8/yard, which is pretty standard price for cotton lycra print on 38th St. (solids are generally $6 in my experience) but he gave it to me for $6/yard due to some writing on the back (it doesn't show through). I also bought 2 yards of black cotton lycra with a tiny little silver sparkle striping to make a skirt, $8/yard. Not sure of the pricing on the other stuff but check the website. Some nylon tricots there are $4/yard, many of the swimsuit fabrics are $10/yard. The sales people were very helpful and solicitous. The quality of the products are extremely high, and they have a wide selection of hard-to-find fabrics. However, be warned that this was a typical overwhelming NYC fabric shopping experience--part hunt, part luck, part asking for help. There are just bolts and bolts of fabric stacked up to high ceilings, none of them labeled with contents or care or pricing or anything at all, really. There are no signs saying "cotton lycra over here" or "nylon tricot here", and a lot of the different fabric and fiber types were just all mixed in together. So you have to ask. Still, the aisles are wider and more airy and well-lit than some other shops in the area, and I didn't feel as much pressure from the sales staff as I have elsewhere in smaller shops. Worse customer service ever! I ordered many different fabrics from their online store in November 2017. I sent it to Comgateway (a courier site) because I'm living in Singapore and Spandex house is in NYC. Comgateway received the item as a few kgs and charged me $200+ for it to be sent to Singapore. It was crazy expensive. More expensive than what I paid for the fabrics. Upset, I paid and my items arrived in December. I opened up the package and to my horror the fabrics weren't what I ordered!! I emailed Spandex House to get a refund or some money back because of this and they said to get me to check with Comgateway and I checked with them. Comgateway took photos of the package they received and sent to me and it was the same package. Spandex House claimed that probably it was Comgateway who mixed up the packages but Comgateway said that they only received fabrics from Spandex House to my name. Now Spandex House says to call it even, I can go ahead to use the fabrics they sent. HOW DO I USE THE FABRICS SPANDEX HOUSE SENT IF THOSE AREN'T WHAT I WANTED? HORRIBLE HORRIBLE SERVICE. UNTIL TODAY NOTHING IS SOLVED! Edward was the person I contacted and it's really bad that there's no follow up and it's already May!!!! Wow! How is this place even in business? I agree their selection is impressive but ignorant sales people (if you can find one) and severely lacking customer service is just unacceptable. Placed an order on line and received a call saying they could not ship to our PO Box and that I needed to call them with a physical address. We are in the process of relocating and did not have an actual physical address to ship to. Before I could return their call they had charged my credit card for the order and shipped it to an old address on the other side of the country. Took another customers advice and found another warehouse with better prices and less hassle. read more

Sure they have a big selection of fabric but good luck finding what you need since the place is not well organized. There were rolls of fabric blocking the stairs to the second floor (don't trip). Then good luck getting assistance from language-challenged employees who would rather be doing something else. Prices aren't cheap. My favorite person who works here is Gean, he is always helpful and extremely funny. He is also very knowledgeable of what fabrics are in store, which fabrics will work for your project. I had to minus a star because some of the other employees here almost always have a bad attitude and aren't so helpful. I have been going to this place for years and it is THE place that I go to for stretchy fabrics. The wide variety and huge space will amaze you and you can definitely lose yourself in this place, literally! When you first walk in, you'll notice that the fabric bolts are grouped as best as they can by style. Novelty fabrics are at the entrance, then animal prints, graphics, polka dots, stripes, vinyls, netting... mostly printed spandex. To the right in an expanded part of the store, is the stretch sequin fabrics and more expensive stuff ($19/ yd and up). Towards the back of the store, you'll find ITY and metallic bouclé and neoprene like fabrics. Wait, there's more! Head up the stairs another 2 flights and you'll find yourself on a huge floor with solid colors in every shade of the rainbow (in different thicknesses and stretchiness) stretch lace, netting, lining fabric, velvet and crushed velvet. Their website has a photo catalog of many of their fabrics but there is always something new coming in every week. I only wish their stretch denim section were larger and if they would carry stretch suiting, more cotton blend knits, and more faux fur. Surprisingly, they do sell a small selection of stretch woven fabric on the main floor. read more

They aren't kidding by the name. Go here if you are looking to make swimsuits and related costumes. Thinking that one store couldn't possibly only sell spandex, I went in looking for jersey knits to make a dress. Not as large of a selection of that (after all, you'll note that the store is not called "Jersey Knit House") but the service was so fabulous that I not only learned about several new types of fabric, I found an excellent rayon knit for $6/yard. 5-stars worthy experience. Horrible customer service all around. I saw they had the exact fabric I wanted online and was hoping to find it in stores. After wondering around for 15 mins, I pretty much had to force someone to help me find the fabric which was an extremely awkward situation. The guy told me they didn't have what I needed on the second floor and sent me downstairs, when I got to the first floor of course I had to hunt someone down to help me. Before I can even finish my sentence, the guy rudely said they don't have anymore...interesting he didn't even attempt to care. I left right away! I went back online to find the fabric and called customer service to make sure they had the right fabric, the guy said the fabric was in stock and would be cut and held to the side for me. When I get to the store, of course no one cut the fabric or even knew what I was talking about and I received so much attitude. I don't recommend shopping here or purchasing online, the employees are unkept, rude, and lack knowledge of fabrics. Yes, there's a huge selection but with no one to help. I am a frequent customer and always see him having an attitude towards paying customers, and finally it was my time to experience his rudeness face to face. I was completely appalled. Instead of purchasing what I was going to, I took my business to another store on this block who was more than happy to help me. In general I have okay service with Spandex House. They have terrific prints so I keep coming back. I am used to ordering on line and then waiting for a call (or calling them back) to provide my CC number. If it keep my CC safe then I am game. There are three things that really disappoint me about ordering from this company: 1.Their on line images don't always match what is in stock; 2. I am sent the wrong fabric from what I ordered; and, 3. The mistake is not corrected and I am left with fabric I didn't order or want AND the expense of their mistake. Venting about #2 and #3. ARGH! I was told I could ship it back to them AT MY EXPENSE for a reimbursement, even though it was entirely their mistake. Here is a potential solution for others who have had issues with this: I keep a screen shot of the fabric swatches and product numbers that are in my baskets that I order so that if there is a mistake on their end I can send it to Edward (in an email) and hope he will have mercy on me to resolve the company's mistake. The people at this store not only actually knew what I was referring to when I asked for fabric by composition and weave, they pointed me in the right direction, which cannot be said for most of the other fabric store in the district. They have cotton stretch jersey knits ^.^ in solids, patterns, and adequate amounts [as opposed to one or two rolls of blanket fabric x.x which I also encountered in other shops]. Normally I always order from this place. But recently, I placed an order on 2/18 and I was shorted of some fabric. I called and was told to speak with Edward. After we spoke, he told me to email him my invoice and I did so. He said he would get back to me. After a week he never did. I emailed him back around 3/4 and then he told me he shipped it but he never gave me a tracking # as I inquired about. Five minutes later I was forwarded the tracking info for my first order that was already delivered. Honestly, I hate going through a hassle and dealing with bullshit like that so I let it go and told them forget the fabric. Next time I will just take a trip up there myself so they cant short me out of my fabric and take my money. Smdh. read more

THey have a huge selection of colors, textures, and materials. Typically they'll cost you $6-10/yard so they're very reasonably priced. If you're having paying someone to sew your vision, that's likely to be the most expensive part, but diy, and you'll walk away with some awesome stuff for nothin! read more

I tried ordering a large ordering by a certain date and tried communicating with her sales associate (Edward) who kept telling me shipping would email me, who was (John) which not only took forever but was unhelpful. I told Edward when I needed it by and he had John email just a general price for regular shipping when I needed it in 3 days. The whole process took so long they finally gave me a price to get to me the day before instead of the 3 or 2 days which would have been A LOT less expensive. Now because of this I cannot get the fabric due to shipping because just as much as the fabric itself. I would not order from them if I was you. read more

One star for service, zero stars for fabric quality because I never received any! This sounds like a great store to buy from if you're local to the area, but if you're ordering over the phone or online, STAY AWAY if you ever want to see your fabric! The website prides itself on same-day shipping, but whoever runs the sample department apparently needs to be re-trained or just doesn't care about their clientele. I ordered a swath of samples through their website and waited. And waited. Six days after they should have arrived, I called back to check in... only to be casually told by the sample manager that they hadn't even been mailed yet. The excuse was that I hadn't specified the fabric type but they would absolutely send it out tomorrow. Rather than point out that my fabric type absolutely was in my email - and even if it wasn't why wouldn't you attempt to contact me - I simply agreed because I was on a tight deadline. Next week arrives. No fabric. This time the excuse was that I'd never been told in the first place it would be sent next-day, and after MUCH back-and-forth she casually admitted that she "forgot to give it to the cutting guy" for all of the other days that the fabric never made its way out the door. Since it was now impossible to make my deadline, I canceled the order and ordered elsewhere. Never once did the sample manager apologize, sound remorseful, or offer an excuse that amounted to more than "I forgot but hey, it was your fault." To get my off the phone, she then promised adamantly that a full fabric order would be sent same day! To my surprise, when I went to place the order, the other rep in charge told me that she could guarantee no such thing. I told her to cancel the order. For some reason - almost as an insult - nearly a month later but what should arrive in my mailbox.... but my samples! Thank goodness I didn't wait and ordered elsewhere instead. I would have loved to patronize you, Spandex House, but you really need to do something about your sample department. From now on I think I'll stick with Spandex World - at least I can trust them to actually ship out my order without "forgetting." read more

I went in there to buy some fabric today, and I had already picked out some that i liked. While my fabric was being cut, one of the employee's there called me over and said he wanted me to see one of their new fabrics. I walked over and he begin to show me two bolts of digitally printed spandex with male genitalia ALL OVER IT. He began to smirk and asked if I wanted some. Confused, I declined. Then, he walked away, and began laughing with his other co-workers. Not only is this situation homophobic and unprofessional, but it also makes me feel like a person that is only looked at as a pervert. I will never ever shop there or their affiliated stores again. I know that I am a pretty obviously gay guy, but that doesn't mean I have to be disrespected as so. The sad part is... I just wanted fabric. I love this place! When my mom comes in town, we head to 38th and 39th streets and spend afternoons shopping for fabric. Her suitcase is always half full of fabric and we inevitably ship boxes back home to her. Here's her deal: she makes doll clothes for the American Girl dolls and any 18inch doll. Shopping for printed spandex or stretch velvet or novelty spandex (ie. ruffled or the torn/laser cut spandex) is impossible in the midwest. Her best selling items are from the material she buys here in NYC. She always spends the most money at Spandex House and we always leave super happy with her purchases. read more

Paid a lot of money for two day AM shipment delivery. The packet arrived Monday night (order placed Wednesday 9am) much too late for the weekends use. I contacted spandex house right away to inform them of the incorrect shipment, and agin a week later and I was promised a money return. Now it's two months later and still no return has been made. Called again today and had a very unpleasant talk with Edward (the owner maybe?). I hope they finally correct the mistake!
