The burgers were cooked to order and prepared as requested (medium). The benedict was excellent. The staff is very friendly and the restaurant is clean. So, why not five stars? The French Toast was just ok mostly because the syrup was served cold, and the deep fried pickle appetizer was pretty bad - food service frozen bag of tiny pickle spears that were close to 90% breading and 10% pickle. It's absolutely wonderful. The reviews that say it's the best are all 100% correct. We had the Beef Dip and the Pastrami. We're still trying to decide which was better (I think it's a tie). We are going to have to come back and try both again to really decide. The French Fries are thin crunchy strips of perfection. They look almost like potato chips but somehow manage to be both crunchy and soft inside. It was fun watching the chef prepare the food. We needed a break from our cabin fever and dropped down to Jensen's market for supplies. Spade and Spatula shares the parking lot with Jensen's. We were going to drop by Dogwood Tavern but decided to stroll into Spade and Spatula (rough hike of 50'). Great drinks, incredible french fries and a delicious char broiled chicken sandwich. The black tablecloth was dirty and didn't appear to be changed between guests. The bathroom was also dirty and toilet didn't flush properly. Unfortunately, it was 2 slices of white bread that was barely toasted, a smear of avocado, sliced tomato (like for a burger) and egg. My daughter didn't care for her breakfast sandwich either. Just a few things to be adjusted to make it a 5-star location. We ordered the Blue-Cheese burger which was outstanding for the most part. Thank you Bev and Terra at Spade & Spatula- Ca. Gastropub for a fantastic lunch on Thursday. I happened to be driving through Blue Jay and decided to pop in for a late lunch and cocktail. The atmosphere was welcoming and relaxed with guests at tables, jazz music playing and the smell of delicious food wafting through the restaurant as plates were being taken to their hungry diners. The server and was kind, attentive and moving with a sense of urgency through the floor to take care of the guests and myself as we each waited patiently. I ordered the Moscow Mule Cocktail and received my drink within a few short minutes. After writing an email or two, my food was brought over from Bev herself with a smile and I happily enjoyed the BBQ Bacon Burger with the Spade and Spatula signature hand cut fries & dipping sauce (it's all about the sauce ya'll). The burger was juicy and not over done with bacon, melted cheese, bbq sauce, tomato, mixed g's and topped with crispy fried onion. I love the fries here because they are hand cut and have slightly different levels of thickness which provides great texture and different levels of crunch when fried. The food was plenty and I was able to take home 1/4 of the burger and about 1/2 the fries to my other half who enjoyed it in about 2 bites. If I didn't have any self restraint, I would have ordered the beignets with coffee as I have had the pleasure of indulging in them before... but I'll save that for another visit with a friend. I can't put into words how wonderful and what a beautiful surprise this little small buisness restaurant was. I was in Lake Arrowhead for a romantic getaway with my girlfriend and this place had the best reviews. The atmosphere, the music, the food, the service...100%. 10/10. Our host/waiter was Naum and he was incredible. He served us promptly and always with a lovely smile :)! He ran around and worked so diligently and was always in good spirits! The food ( I ordered the cheeseburger and my girlfriend ordered the beef dip ) was SO SO delicious! So was the fries which were definately shareable! Usually you have to sacrifice quality or quality with nicer foods, but this place had BOTH! Seeing all the rainbow flags made me particularly happy, being part of the LGBTQIA+ community myself! The owner seems to be as well so the welcoming atmosphere was so wonderful! (They also played Adventure Time and Over the Garden Wall music - I'm an animator so it made me so happy! ) HIGHLY recommend this place. Support their open, communal, and friendly restaurant! P.S. What a terrific find. We were steered here by a real estate agent we met in Lake Arrowhead, figuring if anyone would know the restaurant scene, it would be a realtor! I can sing the praises for the food we had. The veggie burgers are made in house and wow, I have eaten veggie burgers all over the world and this one makes it to the top five. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his blue cheese burger made with wagyu beef. We both loved the generous serving of hand cut fries. Driving through this tiny town on a whim, I looked up nearby lunch spots and 'S and S' came highly recommended. I love a good gastropub! After walking in my partner and I waited quite a bit to be seated. We were acknowledged by a server carrying food however that was it. In fact, another employee came over to seat us as she'd noticed we'd been waiting for a while. According to her, she wasn't even on the clock but saw us waiting for quite a while. It was a kind gesture on her part! We were asked for drinks which took a little while to arrive- which should have been a clue... Fast forward a little bit after ordering entrees.. we waited 27 minutes for them to arrive. In the world of wait times, that's top tier stuff!! There were only 4 other tables inside... one of which walked in after we'd already ordered beverages, actually. That said, the food was *outstanding*!! Both my partner and I got vegetarian entrees- so so glad we did!! The house grilled cheese was so incredibly rich. While the kale may have been baby kale (or spinach? It didn't strike me as the right texture) it was honestly one of the best vegetarian sandwiches I've ever had. My partner had the spicy veggie burger and while it was most definitely spicy- she took a few breaks- she said it was delicious and loved their housemade patty. Compliments to the chef! I only ate half the burger because it was flavorless. My son has been to the bathroom 15 times and he has a cast iron stomach he rarely gets indigestion. Service was abysmal. The food was slow and the quality inconsistent. And we were overcharged for food. It took 15 minutes to get water, 40 minutes to get the hummus plate we ordered. The server never came by to refill water or check on our food. I had to stand at the bar for 5 minutes to get my water refilled. The $14 hummus appetizer was two tablespoons of dry hummus (with a few delicious deep fried chickpeas on top), stale pita and barely cut vegetables (it was like being served giant horse sized carrots and cukes). I ordered the Asian salad with chicken breast ($15 salad + $4 for the chix). The food was delivered while I was getting my water. Was disappointed to find my salad was not dressed and on a flat plate so no way of tossing it without losing half my salad and making a mess. I politely hailed the server and asked for the kitchen to please toss my salad in the dressing. The restaurant refused to toss my salad, told me I couldn't order another dish (telling me it would take the kitchen 1.5 hrs to make me anything) and told me they were going to charge me for the salad even though I sent it back since it was not what I ordered. I agreed to eat the +$4 chicken I had added. The owner/chef insisted that I would still be charged for the salad since they gave me what I ordered, that not all details are listed on the menu and that it is standard that they don't dress salads. As a first (and clearly last) time customer, I was unaware of this since it was not stated on the menu nor explained by the server. The owner finally relented to not charge for me the salad. When the bill came, they tried to pass through some of the cost anyway - they removed a cheaper salad from the bill that someone else in my party ordered and doubled the price of my chicken. When I alerted the server, she was not interested in correcting the bill. We wanted to be done with the disappointing meal and just paid and left. read more

I understand we came with a group of 5+ so slower service is expected but it took nearly an hour and we were all starving by the time the food arrived. Also a couple people had to wait for their dish, so others waited for them and then the food got cold. Maybe if they put under some heat lamp, they could have just waited and served it all at the same time, that would have been better. Maybe it was an off night.
