I love Space Cowboy! Whenever I come to Austin, I always make a stop here for dinner. They're always able to accommodate small or large parties, but I tend to make a reservation every time. There's a pretty big lot in the front for parking as well! This time our experience wasn't the same as past times I've been because it seemed like only 2 robots were working. Nonetheless, the food came out quickly. They offer lots of mocktails here which is nice! My favorites to always get are the stardust fries, the corn ribs with hummus, and the short ribs! The fries are perfectly seasoned and crispy. The corn ribs with the chili oil crunch are phenomenal! They only come with 2~ per dish so plan accordingly when ordering! The sliders are always surprisingly good! I think the crudo and the baba ghanoush can be a skip -- a lot of our table felt the crudo was a bit too fishy and the flatbread was almost crumbly! For dessert, we tried their new pear tart and it is phenomenal! It is flaky and has a nice smoky caramel flavor to it! We also always get the chocolate ganache and banana ice cream. The concept is fun, but the food didn't justify the price. We had a Saturday night reservation and were seated over 20 minutes late. No big deal for us, but not sure if that's common or just having a very busy night. The restaurant was also extremely warm, which may have been an off night for the AC. The sci-fi theming is unique, with moon-like ceiling fixtures, fairy lights on chicken wire shaped like clouds, and drinks and small plates delivered in a little spaceship. I think space ship talks to you, but it was so loud we couldn't hear it. The bathrooms have no sci fi theming. The drinks were pretty good, and the service was friendly and attentive once we were seated. The food was a major disappointment. The shishito peppers were probably the best thing we ordered. The corn ribs seemed undercooked, and the hummus was just OK. The bread and chips served with it were both stale. My duck ravioli came with a thin, almost watery white sauce that had very little flavor. My date's cauliflower was described as very spicy by our server but arrived with virtually no spice or flavor at all. It also felt more like a small plate than an entree. Overall, it feels like you're paying a premium for the spaceship gimmick and atmosphere while getting fairly average, and in some cases below-average, food. Space Cowboy has been a place I wanted to try for a little while. I finally got a chance to musk up the courage to fight traffic to venture downtown Austin to try this place out. First impression from the outside. There is very limited parking in the restaurant lot. Luckily I had planned ahead and booked a Resy for 4pm (when they open) Saturday. We had gotten there there a few minutes earlier to make sure we were able to get parking. Parking is free if you are dining at Space Cowboy. When we got there, there's already people waiting in the parking lot for the restaurant to open to come inside. Upon entering, we were transported to another galaxy. There's a space vibe here and all the decor is very fitting for the name Space Cowboy. Moon floors, cactus , artwork for sale, cloud lights, moon lights, & upper scale seats and table. There's dividers on the table walls so you can get some privacy. I love that they had a small table for the ladies to put their purse on by their table. Vibe check is a pass! What we ordered: Space balls- $16.75- 2/5 This dish was highly recommended by the waiter because it's one of their top seller. Unfortunately I really wanted to enjoy this dish but it was simply super salty. I love the puri balls and the texture was great with the salmon but it was heavy on the salt. According to my family member they told us we should have went on a weekday and that the food is better because they had the Space balls and it wasn't salty. :/ .. very strange. Torched crispy rice trio- 16.75- 3/5: It came with 3 pieces of crispy rice topped with salmon, steak, and tuna. The salmon was super salty. The steak had an Asian flavor and was interesting. Steak was tender. Overall, not the best crispy rice I've ever had but it's decent. Crispy rice was super crispy. Just wish they were not heavy handed with the salt. Steak tartare $18.75- 4/5: this dish was the best dish out of the 5 dishes. The steak tartare was cut not minced like how other steak tartare I had. It was unique with the fact the steak was cut in smaller chucks. The steak was super soft and melt in your mouth. The flavor overall is balanced. They serve along with it a cup of different chips (sweet potatoes & taro chips) and bread. I think my favorite was the Taro chips because it was wider in size so when scooping the steak tartare chunks it was easier to eat. The sweet potato chips was too small and the steak tartare was falling off of it when trying to eat. It was a battle to get the sweet potato chip with tartare in your mouth before chunks of tartare falls off. I gave up and use a fork to scoop the tartare and then stick the potato chip in my mouth which I think it takes away from the dish appropriate eating experience. The bread they could done without because it did not complement with the tartare in any way. The soft and chewy texture of the bread made the dish subpar. I appreciate the variety but the taro chip pair well the tartare and I wish there was more than two pieces of taro. Roasted octopus $24.95- 2/5: Beautiful dish. I wish the dish tasted as good as it looks. The octopus had some pieces that were tender and other pieces that were super chewy which indicates overly cooked. This dish is actually pretty bland. There were different types of sauces but none complimented the octopus and puree well. This dish needed acid and the potato needed to be cooked 1 minute more. It was still pretty firm . Cowboy duo sliders 17.95 - 3/5: meaty and the meat was juicy. Love the texture of the fried onions in the sliders. It was tiny but mighty. A very straight forward slider but wasn't anything that stood out. Even though the description states steak but the meat was grounded up for a meat patty. Ordering process: Your waiter will take your order but all of your food and drinks will come out on the train. The trail trails are right next to your table. Once the train stops you will need to grab your food out. If you somehow missed your train, don't panic. Your waiter will bring it to your table. We didn't miss any 4 of train drop offs. Service was ok. It wasn't anything personable or stood out. Staff wasn't cheery and it was transactional . The restaurant was toasty temperature inside and we got pretty hot. Do I recommend this place? Honestly I am torn because I like the vibes but only 1/5 dish was good. The food wasn't anything memorable and was salty. Over hyped? Not sure if I went on a bad day or if the Chefs were salty but I felt the staff was salty including the host. Based on my personal experience I can't recommend this place. Came here on a Sunday evening with family (4 of us total) and we were seated right away. I loved the ambiance and decor inside including the sparkly flooring in the bathroom without being tacky. There is a track along each table where a robot will drop off dishes directly to the table. Our server recommended that each person order at least 2-3 dishes (1-2 small dishes and 1 main dish). I had the inked seafood risotto (shrimp, scallops, mussels, baby clams, speck, squid ink, fennel) while hubby had the braised short rib (port demi-glace, fresh herbs, truffle oil, vanilla mashed potatoes). We both enjoyed our dishes but I was already pretty stuffed from all our appetizers. A very unique take on the dinning experience. The atmosphere is a Modern Jetson style where a conveyor belt robot brings you your food and drinks as they are ready. It's quite fun and you never know which dish is going to come by next. The food is an eclectic mix of ingredients and flavors with interesting takes on standard dishes. Ok, I got here with a reservation for 7pm and I was seated at 7.45pm, that's unacceptable with a previous reservation. I complained a few times and I got a glass of champagne but still...I was about to leave to another place. I was in Austin recently for a bachelors party, and we gave this spot a go, and it was well worth it From the outside the place wasn't particularly flashy, but still modern. But as soon as you walked through the doors you are transported into this amazing nighttime desert scape restaurant. There are art installations everywhere that work so well together. The cacti, the clouds, and the color palette was so cool to experience. You will see self-delivery cars rolling seating head level around the restaurant delivering food, and I'll describe that more below There are plenty of seating options in the main dining area. None of the tables felt particularly crowded or overly close to other tables. The setting is so intimately lit (dessert night) that you really don't get the overall "noise" and distraction of the other tables, just yours and the decor The menu offers a variety of shareable, entrees, and other delicious dishes. There's also a drink menu to pursue their signature artisanal. Everything was incredible. The drinks were gorgeous and satiating. The meals were hearty and flavorful. We left happy and full The staff were great. They walked us through the menu, the restaurant concept, and they were very attentive and helpful The little self delivery teams were the main pull. Similar to sushi restaurants that have conveyor belts or robots delivering or offering food, this restaurant has these tracks that retro looking miniature train cars roll on. They pass by your table at eye level, they are fairly quiet, and it's fun to watch. When they stop at your table they will either have their little doors open or they will open. You will have like 5-10 seconds to take pictures and grab your drinks or appetizers and then the trams are off again Some tips: I would definitely recommend reservations for this spot I would definitely order a handful of shareable for the table. They are self delivered on the little trams, and it's exciting, they are delicious, and it's a great experience. I'd also consider order a handful of different entrees and potentially sharing them Try their signature drinks. We drink virtually all of them and there wasn't a bad one. Nestled in a stretch of good restaurants on E 7th St, Space Cowboy has made its mark as a high-concept place to enjoy good service, great food, and have FUN. That's why we chose it as a surprise birthday destination. Make note that the place is windowless and how they've actually used that to good advantage with the decor. The whole robots-deliver-your-drinks-and-food thing is a gimmick, but it's a really well-executed one, the track being built into the design of the dining space rather than impeding foot traffic. Arissa was a fabulous waiter, entertaining and congenial and informative. There are three small-portion menus (Crudo, Small Plates, Harvest) and one list of mains, and we went the route of each of us ordering one of the small-portion dishes to share at table, and then each a main. My short-rib main was unbelievably tender and satisfying. Everyone should try the spaceballs and corn ribs small plates. My only suggestion is that a lot of the small plates are meant to be picked up with fingers, so extra napkins would be nice. My panna cotta dessert was a work of art. Parking is a bit of a challenge so be prepared to spend a little time looking for a space either at the restaurant or around at different businesses. Or just Uber there. I ordered a glass of wine and was a little shocked how small the pour was for the cost. You are definitely better off ordering a mixed drink for the prices. The steak melted in my mouth, and the salmon and tuna in the Space Balls were super fresh. The panna cotta was full of flavor, and they even gave cotton candy as a fun anniversary treat! Drinks were great overall. But the Aztec Old Fashioned was extremely smoky, definitely an acquired taste. We thoroughly enjoyed the drinks and the meal. Our fav dish of the night was definitely the duck ravioli. I ordered a drink but he couldn't sub gin for vodka which is strange. The space balls were just not good at all. The tuna was not seasoned the sauce was like mayo and some seasonings. The octopus came with barely cooked slices of potato and overcooked black sausage. As an Asian I'm indifferent when it comes to fusion but I feel like Space Cowboy does it well. The aesthetic of the restaurant is very modern with lots of lights and cactus. The highlight of course would be the spaceships on a train track that delivers the drinks and food. I recommend the space balls and the short rib! Frankly, I thought that Space Cowboy was going to be a gimmicky waste of time. Robot servers? Cosmic yet contemporary styling with an upscale menu of small plates? Not my natural habitat, to be sure. I'm glad I was swayed into checking it out though, because I had a great time, in spite of myself. The robots function sort of like conveyor belt sushi, but with targeted delivery straight to your table. They can be a bit distracting at time, as you stay poised to grab your order before it whisks your dishes away after a few seconds of inactivity. Not everything comes via robot, though, and it can be a more interactive way to dine, if you think of it as a bit of sport. My absolute favorite thing was the Kepler Island cocktail. Unearthly green, glowing under the simulated moonlight and artificial stars, it's a breezy blend of coconut, pandan, and just a splash of rum; light, bright, and one of the first tiki-eque drinks I've ever truly loved. I'd go back for that alone. Vegan options are limited but solid. Ask for adjustments, which they were happy to help with, despite the stern warning of "no substitutions" printed on the menu. The blistered shishito peppers are executed perfectly, properly charred, piping hot, and doused in a savory, salty ginger and soy sauce. Do not pass up the smoked babaganoush, and DO order an extra serving of that pillowy soft, impossibly buttery herbed focaccia to scoop it all up. Definitely not an everyday haunt, but absolutely a fun change of pace. Consider me won over. read more

Fantastic concept! The food is also very good too. Ingredients speak for themselves and you can taste all the individual flavors of the dishes & how they come together. Drinks were nice though we aren't huge drinkers. I'd come back for sure. It was fun date night with the wifey given that the restaurant is a bit different than the normal style, without any conveyer belts that bring out your food. haha Get's a bit pricey but you are paying for the experience and not just the food itself.
