I think I had my hopes up too much for my visit to Spaans Cookie Co. in Galt, CA. Many times I had pondered "going Galt" and stopping during many of my Highway 99 adventures. The main bakery and sales outlet is located in downtown Galt on C Street near the water tower. Street parking is available right in front. Spaans has a long history in the area, today focusing on mini cookies. You can find their product at many stores in the region including their cookies and meringue pops - my personal favorite. The main bakery has a large country store which is about 1/3 cookies, 1/3 gift items, and 1/3 historic displays. They have a large selection of their pre-packaged cookie varieties and a small counter for other fresh baked items. The overall feel is nice, but I did not find anything extra special for visiting their factory. Hopes of deeply discounted factory rejects were quashed, but I was able to find some good treats for the trip. Spaans is worth a quick stop, but hopefully you are lucky enough to find them in your neighborhood market. read more

This is a hidden gem in Galt. Walking through the store, you can pick up an enormous bag of meringue cookies for $1!!! The cranberry cookies were yummy! The store has a great selection of cookies made by a local cookie company. There's a cold case for refrigerated goodies. Plus, if you're looking for a cute gift, this has a good selection. The prices were low and the quality was great. Friendly, helpful staff. read more

Worst customer service, but these are the best pies and rolls on earth! Linda- a very flustered employee told me she didn't know what pies they had when asked and proceeded to be very rude all along the way. I was reminded multiple times about how lucky I was.. to get a pie.. at the bakery.. because they fill their preorders before their in house display case. I bought two varieties of Spann's cookies from my local Winco store recently. As I tried each of the two varieties, I found them to be disappointingly heavy and "lardy" instead of light and buttery! This place is nice but the staff seems kind of short. This place is a historic location and they seem bothered when you try to ask them questions and just give you a piece of paper to read!!! How boring is that at least give me pictures and crayons!!! I was excited to take my kids in there to take a look. I was working at CVS in Galt today and had some spare time, so I decided to Yelp some places to go. When I saw a 5 star review for a bakery....well, you can guess what happened next. It really is more of a cookie company than a bakery. Upon entering you'll find boxes and boxes of cookies stacked high. The woman working the counter took an interest in me when she found out I was from out of town and tried to recommend a few things to me. The bakery case held a small selection of items, I remember brownies, pies, scones. The chocolate creme pie looked tempting, but there was no way that would last out in my car for 3 hours. The space was very big and I wandered for a little bit in the two rooms. Off the top of my head there were chocolate chip button cookies, fudge chocolate cookies, gingerbread, lemon, dulce de leche meringue, regular meringue, oatmeal raisin, peanut, spice windmill, and oatmeal. I bought two "small" boxes of cookies for $3.50 each. They were definitely a good size and will last me at least two weeks. There were a few boxes of meringue cookies that were marked as sample so I got to taste them...yummy! They also had a special section marked "gluten free" and "sugar free", and the selection was definitely not lacking. My only complaint is that I wasn't able to purchase individual cookies, since I sort of wanted to try them all. Oh well. As soon as I got to the car I opened my windmill spice cookies and bit it. Very good, the spice flavorings are so homey and immediately made me think of autumn, reminds me of my much beloved Pumpkin Spice latte...I'm sure the two will pair beautifully. My fudge chocolate cookies were wonderfully dense, chewy, and chocolatey. Overall I'm very happy with my two purchases and if I were ever back in the area I would definitely pop in again! read more

Back in the 80s, my Grandma would trek "all the way" to Galt and bring packages of Spaan's cookies back to Stockton. I vividly remember soft, brownie-like mounds of chocolate cookies and thick, buttery crescents studded with almonds. Luckily, Spaan's is still in business, and they're still turning out those Fudge Brownie cookies (by the bucket now) along with 2 dozen other varieties. Among the various samples I managed to shove down my throat when I thought the cashier wasn't looking were the soft Gingerbread. Holy Lord. I wish I never knew they were only half a gram of fat and 40 calories each. I'm in trouble. read more

Just tried their sugar free lemon chiffon cookies and they are fabulous. This bakery has a special place in my heart, I lived there for a couple of years when I was very young and then spent all my vacations there with my Grandma and Aunt and Uncle. We went to town every Wednesday, and always stopped at the bakery for cookies and bread, so I grew up on their cookies. We have stopped by with the kids when in the area and now my kids have taken their grandkids. The shop is alot different than in the 50's, but still has great baked goods and it is so charming. I have visited Spaans often over the years and it's been a joy every time. I've always had very friendly service and the baked items are fabulous. I live in Elk Grove and nearly every time I have guests over, I head out to Spaans for great pies and rolls. Coming from a household with 2 diabetics, it's hard to find good tasting sugar free cookies . Spaans had the greatest sugar free cookies. I especially love the lemon ones, but just had the chocolate chip macademia and those are wonderful too, I now live in the bay area, but was born in Galt and spend my summers there with my Grandma Willyard and my Aunt and Uncle Van Steyn. As a child growing up in the East Bay, I remember my mom bringing home the "star and moon" cookies every year around the holidays. I never forgot their delicious, buttery almond flavor. I haven't seen them in the grocery stores I visit around Sonoma County, so I started Googling. "Spritz cookies star and moon shape," "Holiday spritz cookies," and so forth yielded me no results as Google searches. I finally texted my mom... "hey, remember those star and moon cookies you used to buy?" Her: "Spaans!" Me: "Holy crap, you remembered the brands?" Her: "How could I not, I f***ing love them!" I did what any other self-respecting cookie lover would do and found their website. To my pleasant surprise, I found them online and ordered 3 boxes. They were UPS'd to me in excellent packaging. The shipping was a little steep, but it was WORTH it. My wife and I are finishing our second box, and the third box was mailed to, you guessed it, my mom! I was introduced to Spaans when I was in high school. My mom met a woman who grew up in Galt, she introduced our family and we have been hooked since!! I have never tasted a Spaans cookie that I didn't like! From chocolate, peanut butter, spice, lemon, oatmeal, nuts, no nuts, even plain cut out cookies for holiday decorating!! They always have something for everyone! A great selection of regular and sugar-free options! More recently, we dove into the rolls, pies, kutchen arena and are still BLOWN away!! BEST rolls EVER!! The price cannot be beat!! And the homemade with love feature is just a bonus!! Pie. Oh lord. I have yet to try them all; but the apple is the BEST apple pie I have EVER had - and made with local apples! Yeah!! The Pumpkin pie is perfect. The sugar-free chocolate cream pie has been perfected, and doesn't "taste" sugar free. The lemon meringue is the BEST I have had for as long as I can remember. The meringue to lemon filling to PERFECTION!! Coconut cream pie... you will never want another brand! Flavorful and full of deliciousness!! I had never heard of kutchen, but my mom and have each bought them... both the peach and apricot are delicious, and a nice change for a sweet treat!! As if the baked goods don't speak for themselves, the staff is ALWAYS ready to help you, are ALWAYS knowledgeable, and are ALWAYS friendly and do everything with a SMILE. Their pies and fresh baked goods are delicious. My family is so spoiled when I fly to visit family I always bring their favorite fruit pies. I've got the perfect bag that holds 2 pies as a carry on. The only problem is when I go through TSA I'm usually pulled aside and told I'm sorry we have to do the E. A. T.test on those pies. LOL. My daughter and son in law had a outdoor wedding reception and served fruit pies for desert instead of wedding cake. It was a huge hit. There is no reason for me to bake a pie ever again in my lifetime! Although it's a cookie company (one of the best with a HUGE variety!), Spaans also bakes up fresh pies, scones, rolls, and even the occasional cupcake (just get there early). When it gets close to the holidays, you need to put in your pie order ahead of time - don't think you're just gonna walk in last minute and grab one 'cause it's not gonna happen - Galtonians are in on this secret! There's also an amazing collection of loose tea and tea accoutrements (tea pots, tea towels, tea strainers, etc.) in the gift shop. If you're headed for the Galt Market, it's a natural diversion, just a few blocks away at 4th & C Streets in the old town section. One of my favorite things about Spaans is that they bake up huge batches of ready-to-decorate sugar cookies around every holiday in cute shapes like bats, ghosts, gingerbread, and even Easter eggs. Perfect for a pre-school or a little one's birthday party activity - just add some frosting & sprinkles and Voila! Instant kid fun! If memory serves, you can pick up a box of 100 cookies for some ridiculously low price point like $20. No reason to spend all night in the kitchen baking up cookies! Go! I have never actually been to Spaan's bakery but I have been lucky enough to try their pies on a couple of occasions. The crusts are flaky, buttery, flavorful and wonderfully perfect. I have had rhubarb and even though rhubarb is not my favorite I must admit it was pretty good. However, I have also had their peach pie. OMG - It was really, really good.
