How did I not know about this amazing bakery? I attended a Friendsgiving where one of our friends brought the Parker Rolls and OMG I'm obsessed! The light buttery roll was amazing and I couldn't stop thinking about it! I waited for the Thanksgiving holiday to pass and went to the bakery today and I was so mesmerized by the selection of cookies, pastries and rolls! Such a cute venue and such welcoming staff. Super friendly and nice! All the customers inside had to be regulars as they gave so many recommendations and everyone was stocking up for the holidays! Price is so reasonable and I can't wait to try all the cookies I purchased! I was told best to order in advance for the rolls during the holidays as they won't be in stock! How can you not love Spaan's cookies? This historic bakery is a classic in Galt. The exterior is brick with beautiful hand-painted tiles. The inside is welcoming, with vast amounts of cookies in all different flavors everywhere you look. Along with the cookies are vintage decor, including a Model T car! The cookies are all delicious, and you can't go wrong with any you choose. My favorites are the fudge cookies and the holiday cookies, which are limited edition. Samples are provided upon request. The price point is amazing, around $4 a box or $8 for a huge box. There is something for everyone here, with gluten-free and nut-free options. My husband is allergic to peanuts, and he can eat here because they clean all the machines after each flavor change. Aside from cookies, there is a gift shop inside with cute knick-knacks and small gifts. I highly recommend coming to Spaan's cookies anytime you're in Galt. read more

A historic cookie shop in Galt (it's been churning out cookies for over 70 years!). Soft, chewy, old-timey cookies here. You might have seen the cookies in plastic containers at grocery chains (I think I've seen them at a Sprouts). The cookies are in the same packaging here as well. I got the chocolate chip walnut cookie pack container for myself and the sugar-free oatmeal cookie pack container for my parents. The chocolate chip walnut cookies taste like Chips Ahoy cookies. I tried one of the oatmeal cookies and it tastes like a Nutri-Grain bar that doesn't have any of the fruit filling (these cookies do have a sugar substitute aftertaste but it's not too bad if you're used to it). Neither of the cookies have mind-blowing flavors, but they still fulfill the cookie craving. For several days I packed a chocolate chip walnut cookie with a homemade deli sandwich for lunch. Makes a really good sweet treat after the sandwich. There are also pies and other baked desserts here. I got a blueberry scone. Don't recommend that one as it was devoid of sugar for some reason (could almost taste the flour). Overall nice little place to go to if you want to support a traditional cookie family business. It's right off the 99 freeway so you could plan a quick stop! read more

I don't know if we just got unlucky and bought a bad package of cookies (chocolate macadamia) or if they are just horrible. I bought for my husband since they were sugar free, he ate half and asked if I tried yet & gave me his other half. It was horrible. Very dry & tasted like cardboard. This shop is a small town treasure! Many years ago, we were able to actually watch through a front window as the cookies were being produced. They've since moved that part of the operation to a larger space around the corner as they ship cookies to supermarkets as well. The storefront is quaint and offers not only delicious baked goods but also gift items. They have many sugar-free cookie options in addition to the cookies, pies, Parker House Rolls, etc. The ladies who work in the store are friendly and helpful. This bakery is one that fills the holes in my memory...My mom used to make it a place for us and it looks like every other bakery in the world...but I wish that I could taste the rice crispy cookies again...In spite of the name, these were chewy cookies...Mom would fill the freezer with bags of these but one bag would be eaten in the car on the way home from the bakery...Between the taste and the smell it was heaven on earth!!!! read more

This is a super old school bakery. Reminds me of others I've seen that have been around for decades. They are light on innovation: they stay in their lane and offer popular options that have been successful in the community for years. But I love that about them! They are super cute inside, you can find weird little gems in the store, and they are carry some specifically helpful things ("blank" sugar cookies for kids to decorate at birthday parties and on holidays). This big cookie place was so rude, chastising me for not ordering a pie a week early. Just found out that AM I needed to bring something the next day and called. Was told to call back at 11 when the pies are done. When I called back I was told first come first served and we don't know what time they will be ready. Really? If I can order a week ahead, then why can't I buy one now and come pick it up when it is ready? There are so many other places that have better customer service and are not rude. I think I had my hopes up too much for my visit to Spaans Cookie Co. in Galt, CA. Many times I had pondered "going Galt" and stopping during many of my Highway 99 adventures. The main bakery and sales outlet is located in downtown Galt on C Street near the water tower. Street parking is available right in front. Spaans has a long history in the area, today focusing on mini cookies. You can find their product at many stores in the region including their cookies and meringue pops - my personal favorite. The main bakery has a large country store which is about 1/3 cookies, 1/3 gift items, and 1/3 historic displays. They have a large selection of their pre-packaged cookie varieties and a small counter for other fresh baked items. The overall feel is nice, but I did not find anything extra special for visiting their factory. Hopes of deeply discounted factory rejects were quashed, but I was able to find some good treats for the trip. Spaans is worth a quick stop, but hopefully you are lucky enough to find them in your neighborhood market. read more

This is a hidden gem in Galt. Walking through the store, you can pick up an enormous bag of meringue cookies for $1!!! The cranberry cookies were yummy! The store has a great selection of cookies made by a local cookie company. There's a cold case for refrigerated goodies. Plus, if you're looking for a cute gift, this has a good selection. Went there for the first time, and was pleasantly pleased. The clerk that works there was so friendly, offered some background on the business and showed us around a bit. Very cute on the inside, very clean and spacious with many sweets to choose from. We purchased cookies and pies and they are fantastic!
