My wife stopped by and bought me a rhubarb pie from Spaans - and it was the best rhubarb that I have tasted since I left the UK twelve years ago. Just the right amount of sweetness so as not to kill the natural sharpness of the rhubarb. The crust too was just perfect, too. Beat Marie Calendars pies into a hat! This place is dangerous! The cookies are so good! I purchased peanut butter, sugar and the meringue. The meringue is for my husbands grandmother who is gluten intolerant. I'm hoping they are as good as they look. The peanut butter was crunchy and peanut buttery...so yummy. My son picked out sugar to share with my husband. I made the mistake of trying one. One of the best sugar cookies I've had. I had to tell them to hurry and eat them or they won't be getting any. The lady that was there that morning was so nice and friendly. Love this place. Found it while wondering Galt. The lemon turnover is awesome. YUM, like a nice curd inside of it with enough lemon taste. We also bought the seeded bread, very good. It is a bit hard to slice and falls apart some, but it is very good. The cookies WOW. The Russian Tea cookie is great. We also bought the ginger and windmill cookies. I haven't tried all of their baked goods so this is probably not the most comprehensive review. But the reason I am giving this a high rating is the sugar cookies that you order by the box. Love sugar cookies but I hate to make them. They make basic round shapes and they make seasonal shapes as well. . . all for the great price of . . . 20 bucks for a box of 90. You heard me right 90. Take a breath because I almost fainted when I heard the price too. But wait there's more, its a pretty decent sugar cookie especially if you plan to decorate them. Let me clear about something. I was brought one of the pies over the holidays and it was the BEST I have ever had. BUT! My wife and I on a road trip up to Sacramento wanted to stop in a pick one up And I have to say we left empty handed and angry because of the comparative lack of customer service. I had typed this long review as to why I gave it a 1. It was such a special place to me as a child, I just rather leave my review as disappointed and heart broken for my children. The customer service is not what it used to be. That's a shame. To the employee, I may not look like I have much, maybe compared to you I don't but one thing I know is my three kids didn't deserve your lack luster customer service. You didn't have to say much I can tell when a person is judging me. I really hope you were just having an off day, and that tomorrow is better for you. And my kids who may look like they are hoodlums with crazy hair cuts and earrings.... they are all straight A student's on the Elk Grove District Honor Roll. I let my kids dress and look the way they want because there grades and behavior is outstanding. They treat all people with equal respect, and so should you. I had never heard of this place until we bought a house in Galt. Not only was I surprised that I love living in Galt, but this place that I drive by everyday has top of the line cookies among other deserts. I have only tried the cookies so far, but the peanut butter cookies are delicious as well as the chocolate chip. They have so many different kinds to choose from. We always get our holiday rolls at Spaans, and the past two years our pies as well. Having a great bake shop so close is wonderful. My 9 year old daughter does some of her best window shopping here, browsing all of the cookies on display. We usually leave with 2 or 3 because my sweet tooth kicks in as well. This is my second trip to Spaans Cookie Co. within 3 weeks. The people who work here are all extremely friendly and helpful. I am always greeted with a smile and a "welcome" when I arrive. They are quick to respond to questions and help you find what you're looking for. You can really tell that they are happy. The building itself is really impressive. There are antiques that were once used in their business in the 1900's. There is a 1920 delivery vehicle and original tools and equipment proudly displayed throughout their store. There are cookbooks, cookie jars, baking tools, mugs and other ceramics, and so much more. This store is immaculate! The floors, counters, and shelves sparkle. This is not just a cookie store although you cannot believe how many different cookie varieties they sell (sugar free, too). They sell home made pies, fresh breads and rolls, pastries, cheesecakes, cream pies, loaf breads, coffee cakes, etc. It is almost overwhelming when you first visit but when you start looking around, you are in no hurry to leave.
