The first time I came here, I ordered a small sweet tofu ($3) and it wasn't as silky as I was hoping. The tofu was a bit thick and texture was similar to a soft to medium firm tofu from boxed tofu that you get from the supermarket. Maybe it was an off day so I decided to give it another try a couple months later. This second time was awful! I went in the afternoon and bought the same sweet tofu and before I took my first bite at home, I saw it was a bit chunky. I took a bite and it tasted completely sour and spoiled. I didn't want to hate on such a beloved institute but the tofu pudding I purchased was so unbelievably bad. I've seen countless TikToks recommending Soy Bean Chan, which is run by a friendly old man at the front of a floral shop. When I visited, there was a line running out the door so clearly I had very high expectations, especially as a tofu lover. I ordered two large tofu puddings ($5 each) which came with a little container of a ginger simple syrup. It was hot and fresh out of the container and stayed warm even until I returned home hours later. I did like how ginger-forward the syrup was and the taste of the tofu pudding was pretty mild but fragrant. However, the texture of the tofu pudding was incredibly off-putting. I'm assuming either the soybeans weren't milled but blended or the ratio of coagulants were off because while I expected a soft and tender silken texture that would creak apart if I so much as looked at it, I instead got spoonfuls of a grainy textured tofu that was spotted with tiny curds. Extremely disappointing overall, but I am hopeful that perhaps I came on an off day. It was more mushy than silky. I'd go back and give it a second try! The syrup was not too sweet - I poured the whole container into the quart-sized tofu-fa. I had a slight communication issue with the owner since he speaks very limited canto and unfortunately I don't know mando. It turned out a little bit comical because a group of men who also had very limited canto tried to be the translator between the both of us, haha. Visited the little stand at the front of the shop to get some tofu fa. I decided to try the warm tofu fa with peanuts, as I had never had tofu fa with peanuts before. I loved the texture of the tofu fa - it was silky, creamy, and smooth, and the peanut soup that he added to the top was slightly sweet. It was sweet enough for me that I didn't feel the need to add the additional syrup that came with it. I think I prefer having the original tofu fa with the sweet ginger syrup, so next time I'll be getting that instead.
