Local vibe

Come for the food, stay for the service. Qualities of a great establishment: family owned and operated, Sun-faded pictures of family around the restaurant, hand painted menu sign, a constant stream of locals and regulars- walking and driving up- to the place, empty trays on the display 2 hours before close, signs limiting the amount of cookie orders, a chef willing to talk to you about how "you gonna love the crust" and Sovrana has them all! Will definitely be returning just to stop in and say hey! And to at least learn their names. The Sovrana family was so warm and inviting, just like the enchanting aroma of the pizza! I'm no pizza connoisseur, but of the places I have been to in Albany, they were the busiest. From walks in looking for slices and drive-ups collecting whole pies (or two) there was a steady stream while we waited for order of GF pizza. Oh yeah! They have GF crust pizza! Which was tremendously satisfying.

Ordered the almost everything pizza from here and it came warm, on time, with plates and a big stack of napkins. This was probably the best pizza I've had in the capital region (not that I get pizza often) in that they were generous with toppings and ingredients were really fresh. The crust is not the bubbly slightly crispy/chewy crust that I like most, but this was still a very good local pizza for the price and speed. My boyfriend also got Buffalo wings which he said were kind of dry and not so good, but I didn't try them and would never have ordered them so not factoring them into my review as much.

I grew up eating here and have always loved it, but the past couple times I ordered a 24 cut Sicilian for a party, they were burnt and half was inedible because the crust was too hard on the bottom. I'm not sure what's been going on. It makes me really sad. The first time it happened, I chalked it up to a bad day... but the same thing again the second time. That's $50 worth of pizza that wasn't eaten.

Half an Italian Mix sub at Sovrana.

I must politely disagree with whatever authority dubbed this Albany's best pizza. My veggie combo slice was huge, and an excellent value at $4, but the toppings sat on a bland puffy crust like you'd expect at a chain takeout place. I had actually come for a sub, but hey, can't pass up a chance to try Albany's best pizza. My Italian Mix was A-OK. Good roll, generous in size for $6 (plus $1 for hot pepper spread) but the meat/veggie mix balance was off and the meat components were uninteresting in flavor. They asked me if I wanted Italian dressing and I said yes, but they use the Wishbone stuff from a bottle rather than the oil/vinegar/oregano mix you expect. Service was friendly and my food was out quickly. There's a spartan seating area if you care to dine in.

Cute spot with old world charm. Although it's only 38 years old as a venture the place architecturally seems older. Good vibes and energy. Warm smiles from family owners. 6 cookie limit so make sure you grab ur 6. The chocolate chip cookie was yummy yummy. Prices are way way reasonable. Lotta love here.

Best pizza ever!

Rose runs the best local italian joint in the world. Yes it is a joint. Not fancy per se. A local haunt. Killer pizza. Great subs. All served with love. It's the only place I eat when I'm in albany

Sorry to those who think this is good pizza we ordered the margarita pizza #8 described as crust tomato sauce, mozzarella, and house made pesto We added the items of sausage and peppers please look at pick maybe 1 to 3 small pieces of sausage a few peppers. The crust is cardboard and the sauce not fresh worse than any tasteless grocery store can of sauce. So highly disappointed

I won't lie, I'm a bit judgey when it comes to pizza places claiming to be "authentic", or the "best" pizza in the Capital District. Sovrana definitely should be ranked among the best locally though, and is about as authentic as it gets. The shop is small, and unassuming. They obviously care more about the product they are cooking up, rather than showcasing the latest restaurant decor, but when you're ordering pizza for takeout, that should be a good thing! Called ahead for a white broccoli pizza, and a sauce on top pie to have on a Friday during lent, and they took maybe 15 minutes. When I arrived to pick them up, I was shocked that my total was less than $20. The pizzas were also steaming hot, literally...there was steam pouring out every crevice of the box. The pizzas were both delicious, perfectly crisp and charred crust, ample toppings, tasty sauce. I will say the "cob" pizza was rather messy, but it was well worth it. I can't wait to go back and try some different toppings.

I was really impressed with the antipasto salad and eggplant parm sandwich

Nice staff, but whatever people who claim this is "authentic" mean, they certainly don't mean authentic _pizza_.

I was promised that Grappa 72 would exceed my expectations. As an Italian-American AND a foodie, it's hard to wow me at an Italian venue. I can honestly say that this place was all that I was promised and more. What we ordered to share: crispy arancini (special app that day), eggplant parm, fried calamari. I am a red sauce snob, and all three of these delivered on presentation, quality, and overall flavor. Entrees we ordered included: halibut (entree special and my choice), pappardelle loaded with shrimp and chicken (also a special), pork osso bucco (stole the show!). We ended with individual desserts, and their Italian cheesecake was smooth and creamy. Service was reflective of high-end dining, yet the check for six people was moderate to affordable. Considering the quality, quantity, and overall experience, this is a place I need to get back to. Now I need to find an excuse to be in the Capitol Region so I can go back!

She had lots of recommendations for what drinks and dishes to order, and she was really attentive towards our party. When we sat at our table, we helped ourselves to the fresh table bread and tapenade while we decided what to order. I decided to get the seafood special, which was a grilled branzino served with blistered green beans and wild rice. While the dish tasted a bit too oily for my liking, there was LOTS of food that came with this dish - enough for me to pack as a lunch the next day! What was also memorable about this experience was the live music playing at front. This is a very nice Italian resto for special occasions and date nights.

An Extraordinary Culinary Experience and a Memory to Treasure…read more Every once in a while, you stumble upon a restaurant that reminds you that dining can be so much more than eating. Rosanna's Italian Kitchen is one of those rare places. While traveling through Albany with my mother and sister, we had the absolute pleasure of discovering this gem. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this was going to be something special. The history of the building provides a fascinating backdrop, but what truly brings Rosanna's to life is the extraordinary knowledge, skill, and passion of the people who work there. There is something wonderful about being served by people who genuinely understand and take pride in their craft. Their expertise elevated the entire experience. And the FOOD! Oh, the food. Every aspect of our meal reflected exquisite attention to detail. From the cocktails and gluten-free focaccia to the mushroom pasta, salmon, and steak frites, each offering demonstrated the kind of thoughtful preparation and culinary craftsmanship that makes a food lover's heart sing. This wasn't simply food prepared well. This was food prepared with intention, skill, and an obvious respect for the ingredients and the people fortunate enough to enjoy them. What impressed me most was that the excellence wasn't confined to one standout dish. It was woven throughout the entire experience. Every detail mattered. Nothing felt ordinary. But perhaps the most beautiful ingredient of all was the company. I was sharing this experience with my mom and sister, and somewhere between the wonderful food, the fascinating history, and the pleasure of simply being together, an evening out became a cherished family memory. I've enjoyed many wonderful meals, but there are precious few that I know I'll still be talking about years from now. This is one of them. Rosanna's is not merely a place to have dinner. It is a place to appreciate history, celebrate culinary artistry, and make memories with the people you love. To the entire Rosanna's team: Thank you for sharing your talent and passion with us. You gave three traveling women something far more lasting than a delicious meal. You gave us a story we'll tell again and again. Albany, you have something truly special here.

I am very surprised by all of the five star reviews. Our party of three had burger/fries, chicken…read moredish, tortellini, and garlic bread. No drinks. We all had water to drink. The burger/fries and chicken dish were average. The tortellini and garlic bread were below average. Tortellini tasted like it was just frozen and undercooked and then served warm, not hot. The garlic bread...how do you mess up garlic bread. It was $7 and it was literally two pieces that were the size of my pointer finger, and one of the pieces was burnt. I would have been embarrassed to serve it as complimentary, let alone charge for it. The three meals plus the two mini pieces of garlic bread came to $110 including tip. It was overpriced for the quality of the food. I would say at the most this should have been an $80 meal including tip. I would have given a 3 star review if that had been the price. I live in a pricey area and I'm not picky. I believe this is the only time I've given a restaurant anything below 4 stars. The place was clean and I like that they bring a glass bottle of water to the table.

For our entrees, we both ordered the Sliced Sirloin Steak, which is a 14oz sirloin with a cabernet mushroom sauce and garlic mashed potatoes. Both the Bruschetta and sirloin were delicious! And the steak was cooked to both of our preferred temperatures. Overall, it was a great experience and I'm glad we went. It definitely won't be another 10 years before I visit!

Entrees : A ravioli dish for my wife and a NY strip steak - medium rare of course for me. Both meals were 1st rate. Our waitress was friendly and attentive, almost too attentive probably due to my movie star good looks and charming personality. We passed on dessert and asked for the check. $98 and change. While the food was good we've had equally as good food at other places for less money, $120 with tip. I doubt we will be back.

This is a nice Italian restaurant that is several steps above Olive Garden. Reservations aren't…read morerequired but I can certainly see why they are recommended, and they were more than kind to us in allowing us to shift ours when our babysitter was delayed. We were seated in the back of the main room which was cold (the A/C was cranking due to the heatwave outside), loud (from people, not music). The side room was lit more invitingly and I think I would want to be there. I heard Frank Sinatra on the radio when we walked in, but within 30 minutes the place was packed and it turned into a raucous environment. We started off with garden salads with their homemade tomato basil dressing. It sounded fantastic but I quickly discovered it was loaded... absolutely loaded... with red onions. My wife bravely ate hers and the pile of onions kept growing on the side of her plate. I couldn't eat mine because of them so they took it away. They offered to remake it sans onions but I decided to hold out for my entree. My wife thought it was overdressed, but for a chopped salad such as it was I think it was fine. My veal Marsala was excellent. Every restaurant does theirs differently and here it wasn't too sweet or too garlicky. The bread on the table was crustier than an old pirate which made it difficult to eat with the table oil dip provided. However, it was perfect for sopping up the veal's sauce. My wife had Chicken Sorrento and the portion was absolutely humungous with a slick cheese shield on the top. She felt bad that my portion of veal was much smaller in comparison, but I had the last laugh as I thought her dish was just average. It all came down to the red sauce: every place tastes different and here it tasted a bit more like stewed tomatoes. (FYI: no place makes it as good as my grandmother). I am glad I ordered a non-red sauce dish, though my side of penne with only light sauce (per my request) was decent. Their dessert menu was nice but uninspiring. That's okay, as we were mostly full. Prices were fair for a white table cloth Italian restaurant, though not inexpensive. That being said, I much prefer the place in Loudonville which has more interesting entrees and comparable prices.
