I wanted to fall in love with Sovereign so I could brag to my friends about this awesome gastropub in downtown Plainfield. But I left Sovereign with the feeling that there isn't much to brag about.
Sovereign took the old Bin 48 space, so if you are familiar with that old restaurant, you know it's beautiful in here. It's dimly lit, with wood floors and a dark wood bar and tables. The bar is at the center of the restaurant, and surrounded by several tables. The restaurant is small though. By the time we left on Friday night around 7:00 p.m., there was a good amount of people waiting for a table.
We received great service at Sovereign. There's a strange misconception that Sovereign is a "hipster" joint. Just because a restaurant has a farm-to-table menu concept, hosts a great craft beer menu, and some employees may have beards, mustaches, or unique hairstyles does NOT make it "hipster." Sovereign is trendy and modern. From what I could tell, the patrons were locals in their 40s-50s. We were definitely the younger ones here. It's also family friendly - they have kid's cups with lids.
Anyway, our server was patient with us when ordering and also was able to describe and suggest beers to us.
The chocolate caramelized churro stout caught my eye, but I wasn't sure I would enjoy a whole glass. I asked for a sample, which they will provide, but samples are a fraction of the cost of the whole beer. I'm not being a cheap ass, but I'm used to several establishments allowing you to try a shot glass-size of beer free of charge. Sovereign's samples are 5 oz., and my one sample was $4. It was worth trying, and it's actually an excellent beer, but I would steer clear of ordering anything you're hesitant about. Sovereign isn't about sampling beer. Luckily, I would trust our server to make recommendations if needed.
The farm-to-table menu concept seems new to some suburbanites, especially Plainfieldians who likely flock to the local Red Robin for their burgers on the weekends. We both had the burger, for the reason that it is made with brisket and bacon, but I didn't really like it. The patty was dry, the BBQ sauce with it was watery, the cheese was kind of melted off of the burger, so I didn't see the "wow" factor here. They also nickle and dime you for each topping.
We also shared an order of the truffle fries. They were delicious, but for $10 I would have expected more. I know this is a gastropub serving items with quality ingredients, but I couldn't really get past the price on the fries.
When the bill came, it was paperclipped to a paper "mission statement," which stated that Sovereign supports all people, races, etc. Then I saw something curious:
"Things We Do Not Support; Yelp."
No further explanation on that one. For a new establishment, I find this really awkward and kind of defensive. Was it meant to be funny? My knee jerk reaction was that it was condescending. This isn't downtown Chicago - most of the reviews of Sovereign - most of the FIVE STAR reviews - are from Yelpers in & around the Plainfield area. Is that not like looking a gift horse in the mouth? Most of the reviews here are positive, which had convinced me to try Sovereign instead of leaving it hidden in my "bookmarks" list forever.
I get it though, kind of. Some of the negative reviews about the food and price point are from people who probably haven't frequented many restaurants of a similar concept/price point. To that I say, read the menu online before you go! However, owners should have thick enough skin that they don't need a silly little mission statement. One of them fought back against an admittedly psychotic sounding review, but they ended up sounding just as arrogant and childish.
A friend of mine was here recently and had the pork belly sandwich. He raved about it. So, if you're still intrigued by Sovereign I would say skip the burger and give that a try instead. And while you're at it, trust your server to make a great beer recommendation.
I do kind of want to go back and try the cocktails...we'll see. read more
