Ate lunch here and the place was packed. The Yuengling draft was super cold and crisp and my shrimp po boy was awesome! You can't beat this place. I will be back! read more

Such a great place! Good local atmosphere and great food with very decent prices. We had chicken tenders that were perfectly seasoned, spinach salad with blackened chicken, chicken melt, and bayou bird. All the food was great. Service was good, except that our server disappeared for a while between our food getting to the table and us finishing our meal. But other than that, no complaints. Will definitely return! read more

I eat here every time I am in town except for this time!! Had my usual party of 13 and waited 45 minutes while I watched party after party get sat and not an attempt to put together a table for us! Definitely not the place for large parties... we went somewhere else and the hostess could care less!! Won't be back! read more

Traveling from Georgia to Texas and stopped here for dinner. Great burgers cooked to order, fantastic onion straws and attentive service. Would definitely come back if in the area. read more

Saw this cafe on FB. In area at lunch. Very busy but seating & service not delayed. Reuben & sweet potato fries very good. If in area worth a look. read more

Lot's of good reviews, thought we would try it for lunch today. Very nice atmosphere, kind of loud though if you are sensitive to that sort of thing. Our waiter was excellent, my wife had the pig sandwich with coleslaw on it, she said it was good, if not a little skimpy on the pork. She also had onion rings with spicy remoulade, which were great. I had a bowl of seafood gumbo and half a roast beef poboy. The seafood gumbo wasn't spectacular, a little bland, not quite up to temp, and the only seafood in it was a single Oyster, for 8.99. The roast beef poboy was excellent except for the top bun, it was so hard, I didn't even try it, which was fine, because it was so sloppy and delicious I just used a knife and fork on it, I don't usually eat all the bread anyway. So, all in all not a bad place, a little loud, the food is mostly very good, a little over priced, but you could do a lot worse. read more

Food was excellent. We had a crawfish sandwich, shrimp and grits, BLT, French toast and breakfast platter. It was very busy since we went right before a parade started. Our server was attentive and we didn't have to wait long for our food. There were lots of TVs for sports watching and the bar looked fun. read more

I visited Southsid Cafe on 4/17/2016 and I was very disappointed in the service. The gumbo was lukewarm and the spinach dip was unappetizing. The waitress offered to remove the spinach dip, but apparently her manager told her to still charge for the chips. Chips come with the dip if I'm not mistaken.... Lastly we were told apps were half price the entire day, when we inquired about our bill the manager informed us only certain apps were. That's understandable but her entire approach was not customer friendly. As we were leaving we heard a customer ask if one of the apps we had purchased was 1/2 price and the response was yes. This was my first time here and as much as I love to eat out I probably won't be back. read more

Heard about this place while at USMC 212 squadron reunion in PNS, FL. Nice-sized portions but the best part was the HUGE HOT FRESH BLUEBERRY COBBLER a la mode. To die for. read more

portion sizes are huge. Staff is always friendly. price is great.food is great. Spin dip is a must

Great authentic food only thing I don't care for is the spinach dip (the chips are awesome) but could use more artichoke

We ordered two sandwiches, one entree salad and gumbo; plus mushrooms to have with the sandwiches. Mushrooms and shrimp on salad were quite good. Rest of food was very mediocre. For example, chicken on one sandwich was dry, gumbo was similar to what comes out of a can (include soft shrimp), and seared tuna clearly had been sitting for awhile and came with a white hamburger bun. For such simple fare, we waited and waited - needing 1 1/2 hours. After our server told us three times that the food was coming, he disappeared for 15 minutes ("ghosting") - obviously wanting to avoid our requests about our long delayed order. Finally, had to go ask if our order was lost. The manager came out and told us it had "only" been 40 minutes since our "appetizer" had been ordered (i.e. the mushrooms ordered as a side to our sandwiches since the sandwiches come with no sides), and that they do not even put in food orders until the appetizers have been served. Meanwhile, the place was so loud that two of four in our party left with headaches. I have no idea at all how this restaurant could possibly receive such high Yelp ratings - unless our experience was unique. Perhaps there are a lot of people who really like chain restaurants with diverse menus, and really don't care much about food quality or wait times. If this is you, then go here. Otherwise, I suggest to avoid. During our Louisiana vacation, we have found many very good, small, local restaurants. I am not a food fanatic but this restaurant was definitely the low-light of our vacation. read more

This is a great restaurant in Slidell. Easy to find. Bright colorful building. Inside is eclectic. Large bar and main dining area. Extensive menu and great prices. I had French onion soup and the country fried steak with white gravy. Very tasty. Soup was served in traditional style and had a rich taste. Steak and gravy was good. Not too heavy, which was surprising. Large portion. My wife had seafood gumbo and the stuffed shrimp with potato salad. Gumbo had a good flavor. The roux was lighter version. Shrimp stuffing was nicely seasoned as well. Potato salad was a mix between traditional and baked (white) kind, in my opinion. Wasn't that great, but only because I prefer the baked kind. Wasn't bad, just not my preference. Server was nice, and attentive. Only complaint was the noise. We sat in the back dining room and it was rather loud. The restaurant was packed, so that didn't help I'm sure. Overall, a great dining experience. We will be back when driving through Slidell again. There are lots of things I want to try on the menu. Only giving 4 stars due to noise. Possibly nitpicking, but if that's the only thing I can take away from this nice place, then I'd say they are doing something right!! read more

All I can say, is don't miss out, simply fabulous, food, atmosphere, service. .. all outstanding!

Fantastic place, great service, great food. The Katrina fire may have stolen some of its homebuilt charm and storied memorabilia but the soul of the place is alive and kicking. The food is spot on, friendly staff and laid back atmosphere. read more

The food was outstanding. For a little 'hole in the wall' it is certainly a 'gem' which mostly I am sure only the locals know about. What definitely made an impression on me was all the military memorabilia inside. I understand one or more of the owners are ex-military and it was clearly indentified in their décor. It is heart-warming to see appreciation paid to those currently serving and those who have served. For anyone visiting or passing by Slidell, this place needs to be added to your places to visit/places to eat list. One of the few places that our son's had to get to-go boxes, as did I. I had a roast beef sandwich, I could only eat half. The appetizer was cheese fries. Wow, the appetizer was huge. It put Outback's cheese fries to shame. I doubt if I will be able to think about anyone else's cheese fries now. Our son's had shrimp and were suitably impressed. Our eldest lives in Slidell and gets to have this gem on his doorstep. That's how I came to know of it. The place was busy and when we were leaving, their was a line to get in. That to me, speaks for itself. The service was great and very friendly. When he comes to visit, I will be asking him if he will pick up a couple of meals to go and bring them with him. read more

We ate there yesterday for lunch about an hour before the parade. It was crowded and we had two children, but we had a great time. Our waiter was attentive and humorous and the food was delicious. The portions were very large. The reuben sandwich, blackened catfish, chicken tortilla soup, children's meals (hot dog, mac n' cheese, and chicken fingers), and even the homemade blue cheese dressing were all great. read more

Simply put..."MOST EXCELLENT, GARTH!" The food, service, consistency, portions, cleanliness, ambiance, and congeniality of the staff all combine to make Southside deserving of its outstanding reputation. Ya' can't be it for a full service restaurant. Steak Night is a real treat. If you're a Marine or former Marine, as there are no ex-Marines, this is your place to chow down. read more

This roast beef po boy is great. My wife always gets the killa fries. She tried the buffalo wings this time and decided they are more bbq-ish with hot sauce. My dad really enjoyed his veal cutlet sandwich. This place is a must every time we visit! Great job nicole! read more

My husband and I went to have lunch at Southside Cafe. We ordered two seafood platters. I gave the server explicit directions. Please do not fry the oyster and shrimp to a crisp. Well lo and behold after water for 40 minutes our food was brought. Soft shell crab burnt, oysters burnt, shrimp so hard and dry you could hardly and it was cold. We did not want to be rude and send it all back because that's not wha we do. We ate some brought the rest home to toss into the trash. After paying &70.00 for a terrible meal, I am sorely disappointed in SOUTHSIDE CAFE. It was not our first time there, but it was the worse food we ever ate there. read more

After looking at the brunch menu online, we were looking forward to ending our over night stay in Slidell w yummy food and drinks. Unfortunately we made our way back home with a sour taste left in our mouths. We arrived about 11:15 and already our waitress seemed a bit in the weeds. We asked for a drink menu since one was not provided at our table. Glad we did bc we soon discovered that it was the only place that the brunch menu was printed. Waitress came to take our drink order which included a brandy milk punch. 10 minutes pass and she comes with 2 waters. Another 5-8 minutes she brings the rest with the exception of coffee and the last water (which finally came but with something floating in it). But as she gives us the drinks she proceeds to say that the bartender just yelled at her for taking a brandy milk punch order. And that they are thinking about taking it off the menu since the bartenders don't like making them bc they are "really hard to make". And that this is the last one we could order. This obviously did not make us feel welcome at all. And honestly a bit uncomfortable. We should have just left then. But decided to stay and hope the food would make up for it. Wrong. The French toast was either burnt or the oil needed to be changed. The grits were soupy and bland. Country fried steak w county gravy tasted of nothing more than black pepper. Over easy eggs were over cooked. Veal parm sandwich, asked for dressed, came plain. Terrible first and last impression. read more

When they first opened they offered a Bleu Cheese dressing that was spiked with jalepeno peppers that was wonderful! Alas they don't put that on salads anymore. Although I admire their persistence, I don't care for the atmosphere. The place is too noisy and too dark. They do seem to be able to accomodate large groups. read more

My wife and I stopped Sat 9/17/11. The Gumbo is the best that we have tasted anywhere. Everything we ordered was really great. Dan and Sharon have made this a very fine restaurant. We will always stop there when in Slidell. Thanks for great food. Casey & Charlene Kilian read more

We were a party of four with varied tastes looking for good regional food at a reasonable price. Southside Cafe did not disappoint! We had fried onion strings, sweet potato fries, steamed veggies, seared tuna with the white remoulade sauce (excellent!), fried seafood basket (plentiful and NOT greasy), and a plentiful bowl of excellent seafood gumbo containing shrimp, crab, and oysters. So much food in the seafood basket we brought half of it home. What the server assured us was a SINGLE serving of bread pudding with whiskey sauce would easily feed 4 people sharing. This is Father's Day and the place was understandably busy, but we received excellent attentive service. We are in the area on vacation for a few more days and we will probably return to Southside Cafe!! read more

Southside Cafe is the place to eat in Slidell, locally owned and run by great people and there isn't an item on the menu that isn't delicious. My favorite is the the Rueben with killa sweet potato fries....they are covered with chili, cheese, onions and jalapeños ....Holy smoke my mouth is watering now. Please go try Southside, you will not be disappointed. read more

Love the grilled tuna with white remoulade sauce but size varies widely from visit to visit.

Pretty good food, huge portions. The downside is they are kinda high and the atmosphere is soso but I do enjoy the food.

My son asked at the Winn-Dixie for a good po' boy place when he, my husband and other son were in the area back in January and was sent here. They raved about it so when my husband and I were in the area this was one place we planned to go. Before we went to Slidell we were in New Orleans and got a po' boy at a place we'd seen on a TV show which has been in business for many years, has lines out the door and is highly rated. I got shrimp and it was good. A couple of days later we went to Southside. I got shrimp again and it was like night and day. There was no comparison - Southside has the other place beat. The other place slathers on the mayo and the bread slides around, making a mess and making it hard to eat. At Southside I could actually taste the shrimp and the seasoning. My bread wasn't sliding around because the mayo was a seasoning, not a main ingredient. There were so many shrimp I couldn't fit them all on my sandwich! My husband got the soft shelled crab and was also impressed. It was cooked to perfection, moist and tender. We liked that the pickles were on the side so we could put as many or as few as we wanted on our sandwich. It was lunch time when we were there. The place was packed and our server was very busy but always seemed to notice if I needed a coffee refill, which was appreciated. When we complimented the food he mentioned our comments to the manager, who stopped by our table to thank us. My family is having a reunion about an hour away in June. I'll be bringing my dad to Slidell, to Southside Café, for a po' boy. I just wish they delivered to Wisconsin. read more
