There are a few butcher shops in the area, and while some specialize in particular cuts or preparations, they all have one thing in common: they know how to serve the carnivore. Southern Steer Butcher doesn't disappoint. The shop offers a solid selection of meats, whether you're looking for neatly packaged cuts from the freezer or something fresh from the display case. You'll find prime cuts of beef, house-made sausages, chicken, and an impressive variety of marinated meats ready for the grill. The marinades include Korean bulgogi, Argentine, and steakhouse flavors, giving you plenty of options when you want something beyond the usual salt-and-pepper treatment. What also stood out was the staff. The butchers are knowledgeable, friendly, and happy to explain the different cuts and preparations. They even walked me through the high-tech process they use to marinate their meats, which was pretty interesting to learn about. Price-wise, Southern Steer seems to fall right in the neighborhood of what you'd expect to pay at a grocery store, but with the added benefit of butcher-shop expertise and specialty selections. If you sign up for their loyalty program, they also offer weekly specials with discounts five days a week. Overall, Southern Steer is a great option when you're looking for quality meat, interesting flavors, and knowledgeable people behind the counter. If you're a carnivore, you'll feel right at home.

Fortunately for us, we looked across the street and saw this spot which turned out to be a gem. It's a cajun meat market that doubles as a cajun kitchen. They offer simple, no frills dishes that are pretty tasty and true to Louisiana cuisine. There's limited seating and while there's a steady number of folks coming in, didnt see anyone not grt a table so the flow is pretty steady for geoups of 4 or less. If you're bringing a group larger than 4, you may have a hard time seating everyones. We had the shrimp po boy and the roast beef boy. The french bread on both was amazing: warm and soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Both were loaded pretty generously and came with lettuce, tomato pickles and mayo. The side we chose were fries which were pretty spectacular: thinly cut and well seasoned. The only sad part is that it's way north for us. We'd probably be there more often if ot were closer.

I also wasn't much of a meat eater back in those days, so I mostly had tried their sides. Now we're both on keto, so we go for just the meat. The meat was some of the best I've had lately! If I had one criticism, the brisket was just the slightest bit dry, but it had the perfect amount of fat to still make it taste good, and the smoky flavor was perfect! The turkey was moist, and probably my favorite part of the meal. We didn't order sides, but the included pickles were better than standard. It was rainy when we went there, so everyone was packed inside. There were barely enough tables. Their outside seating is not covered. There was no line, and my husband had finished our order by the time I had shaken out my umbrella. The air conditioning was a little too cold for a rainy day. The parking lot is all designated handicapped parking, but we got street parking right next to the building. Since we live on the east side, Micklethwait is convenient, and it has earned a place among our favorite places to go eat!

The weather was unbearably hot which also affected our visit because we couldn't eat outside. The issue: The dining room is small and can only hold so many people. We ordered quickly and the food was ready almost immediately. But we had no where to sit! So we stood there with food in hand (kinda in the way of the workers and other patrons) waiting for people to vacate. Part of the problem was there were two tables occupied without any food and they were just talking. At other places, this is awesome. But a place with limited seating: nope! So our food was cold and the grits congealed while we waited to sit down. The service: all of the staff we interacted with were kind, friendly, and helpful. They were a highlight of our visit. The sides: We had the Green Chili Grits and the Potato Salad. Both were excellent but the potato salad was maybe the best I've ever had. For me, it was perfection because it wasn't too "wet" and the dill was just a fantastic add. The meats: We had the beef brisket and the sausage. Both were very good. I preferred the sausage but maybe just got a less than perfect piece of the brisket. The parking: also not great. There is street parking but also a back lot they direct you to off of Springdale. But they don't really have a safe/marked path to get you to the building. Just loose gravel where you're at risk of an ankle sprain. Maybe they will consider expanding the inside space? That would really help. I'd still come back because the food was really fantastic, but only for take out where I wouldn't have to deal with parking or finding/waiting for a table.

But unfortunately the BBQ, which should be the star of the show, just didn't quite hit the mark for me. I came in hoping to try one of their lunch specials, only to find out they had recently discontinued them. I almost left but the staff kindly honored the deal anyway, which definitely turned things around in the moment. I ordered the chopped beef sandwich with garlic parmesan fries. While the food wasn't bad, it lacked the depth of flavor I expect from Central Texas BBQ. Even with sauce it didn't deliver that rich smokiness or bold seasoning I'm used to. That said, maybe I just chose the wrong dish. Their menu does have some intriguing options like crispy duck, ribs, an elk burger, and a full bar. I might give them another try during happy hour or if I'm nearby, but I wouldn't make a special trip just for the BBQ.

I'm partial to baby back over spare ribs. Brisket was decent. Fatty slices were much better than the lean. Sausages were a star. Both were moist and great amount of fat. Pickles and red onion were a nice touch. Overall, a different spot than the norm and worth a visit. Prices are by the half pound and generous.

Then I worked my way to the cafe/kitchen. I ordered 2 beef tacos. My Spanish is very limited. The sweet woman helping me spoke zero English. There were a lot of outside workers enjoying their lunch. I ended up with 2 papusas. Not sure of the meat filling- looked like chicken. (LOL), then a gentleman spoke to me and this time I got 2 beef fajita tacos on nice fresh corn tortillas. I kept the papusas too. They offered refrigerated cases of soda pop including Jaritos and juices, they also had large containers of several flavors of Agua Fresca of which I ordered a Grande Mango flavor. You could get your beverage with milk added as well. Probably seating for 25. No menu-once I moved up in line I could not only smell but I could see the steam tables which faced the staff and were loaded with food. There were a handful of things I didn't recognize. What I did recognize was beef fajitas, beef lingua, tripe, caldo de res, refried beans, Mexican rice, fresh tortillas. I sat down and opened the 2 beef tacos and ate one. It was really good and I was full so took the rest home. They sure don't skimp on the beef!!!! There were lots of diners coming and going. Most of them were getting combination plates. I'm going to have to figure that out next time. I had asked for a side of frijoles, but I was likely confused because I think the beans and rice only came with combination plates. Anyway, I enjoyed my taco and I'll definitely go back after I polish up my Spanish a bit !!!!
