Been hearing about this restaurant so of course I have to check it out !! Parking wasn't the greatest due to street parking . But when you walked in baby !! It was beautiful. From the layout to the decor and the music , just the whole atmosphere was really inviting . Even how the table set up was so cute and the waitress was helpful as well . Okay for starters we tried they egg rolls that had chicken and collard greens in it with a hot of homemade honey dipping sauce . My husband and son really enjoyed it . I thought it was okay , wasn't mind blowing but it wasn't bad either . It had a huge piece of chicken in it , I would have preferred it to be cubed up instead of whole but overall it was good . The waitress also brought was corn butter cornbread to the table. For drinks me and my son ordered the island Palmer , it was refreshing, sweet and came in that's cute mason jars , My husband ordered the salmon burger with home cut fries and he really enjoyed his meal . He gave it a 8/10 . The sandwich was a far from small and the home fires was really good as well . My son ordered the cheese burger and when I said this sandwich was massive , it was huge . He could not finish it lol . Last but not least as you know when I visit a place I have to order at least two entree's. I ordered the smothered turkey wings with Mac and cheese and yams aaaaand the mama fried chicken with rice and gravy with collard greens. The Turkey wings was tender but the gravy looked like it had been sitting for a while , it was okay nothing I felt I would order again . The mac and cheese was pretty good definitely had a homemade feel to it . The yams was caramelized and had a lot of cinnamon. Now the mama's fried chicken was very well seasoned falling off the bone fried chicken .I ordered white meat and man oh man the breast was super moist which was very impressive because white meat is usually dry but not this chicken . I usually like to go to a restaurant twice or more before writing a review, I have been to this restaurant twice. First time was beginning of December 2022 and second time on New Year's Day 2022. Someone recommended to me and a friend when we were looking for real southern food. This person said it was the best and I honestly agree. I am new to the area and I think this is one of my favorite restaurant so far. However I was a little upset the first time because we were about 10 minutes late due to parking and it was raining, they canceled our reservation and was told to wait 1 hr and 30 mins. We waited in the car. So try to be on time. Other than that, everything else was great, the place is very nice and neat, service was good, food was great and on our first time there, the owner was going around greeting everyone and making sure everyone was having a great time. She's a very nice and welcoming lady. Oh and my friend wanted the crab cake and we had looked at the menu before going, price was $28 I think but at the restaurant, the new menu said "market price" and when we asked how much that was, we were told $40. My friend still got it and said it was really good but thought $40 is overpriced. Second time there, New Year's Day, reservation was at 4pm and we made sure to be there on time. I really wanted the turkey wings but were told they serve that after 5pm, I don't eat seafood and I just really wanted the turkey wings. At this time it was 4:30pm and we were willing to wait 30 mins so I can get my turkey wings but we were told we couldn't do that. I ended up just ordering southern roll and a drink. My friend had the seafood platter and loved it. My favorite sides so far are the mac&cheese and collard greens. For appetizers, love the southern roll. Complimentary cornbread is good. Both times there, Xavier was our server and he was great. Nice guy, it was his first day on our first day there and he did a great job. He answered all questions, was attentive and really polite. We decided to go to Southern Kitchen for a post Christmas dinner. The person at the front desk acted like she had never been there before. No one was being seated. We had a reservation but that quickly went past. We were finally seated and our waiter was wonderful. He met all of our needs throughout dinner. The most disappointing thing that happened that night was the food. I was very excited to taste some great Southern food. When our food arrived everything was just as we had ordered. The portions were very large. When we tasted the food it was extremely salty. Everyone at the table, who all ordered different entries, said how salty their food was. This was very disappointing. After dinner we asked about dessert. He said dessert was bread pudding. I asked about the cobbler listed on the menu and was told there was no cobbler. This is a lovely restaurant, although the music was so loud we could barely hear what the person on the other side of the table was saying. I was very excited to visit this restaurant none of us had eaten there before. After this experience, I will not be back. read more

The restaurant is newly renovated and it is simply beautiful. As you all know it used to be the home of the restaurant Brio at Stony Point. I ordered the Catfish/Shrimp with 2 sides of macaroni and cheese. The fish and shrimp were both crispy and seasoned to perfection. The macaroni and cheese were creamy and cheesy with lots of flavor. I saw it on Yelp, a friend recommended it, and it was on the list of places the Black History Museum gave me as a recommendation. Have to say, it was a great decision to go. Service was awesome, but that was overshadowed by the delicious food. The catfish bites to get us going were melt in the mouth delicious and hot and so we knew they were fresh cooled. My husband and I visited this restaurant on Sunday 8/31. When I walked in I was amazed by ambience and the cleaniness of this restaurant. The hostess was very pleasant and accomodating. Now lets get to the food, I would consider myself a foodie; I have to give the food a 10 out of 10. I ordered the shrimp and cornbread as my appetizers, we ordered fried chicken, yams, fried cabbage and collard greens as entrees. Delicious. I was in the mood for some southern side dishes. I walked by this place a few days ago and immediately knew I wanted to try it. Looked cool, food I saw through the window looked delicious. Came back tonight and it didn't disappoint. I love spicy food so when I saw buffalo shrimp as an appetizer that order went in. Then what to order. Lots of great choices like catfish, fried chicken, interesting salads or shrimp and grits. I would have ordered the shrimp and grits but it seemed duplicate with my appetizer. I looked at their sides and they were perfect. I choose cheese grits, stewed tomatoes and collard greens at the bartenders recommendation. All great choices. Reservation only. We walked in and got lucky because I think a party cancelled so we got a seat for 5. I ordered the turkey wings, fried cabbage, and mashed potatoes with gravy. I enjoyed the wings but I think one of my wings could have been cooked a little longer so it would have been more fall off the bone. The cabbage was ok. Not nasty, just not my taste and I enjoyed my mashed potatoes. My fiance ordered the catfish. He said he wished it was seasoned a little more but his yams were delicious! My mom had the baked wings and collard greens. That was delicious and my step dad's french fries were delicious. The main character was the cornbread.....OOOOOOMYGOD! THEY WERE DELICIOUS! She was super friendly and had thee absolute best personality and the biggest smile. Our food was absolutely amazing. I ordered the fried fish which was good, the only complaint is while attempting to enjoy it, the fish still had some fine scales on it. We made reservations for four not to sit separate at the bar. They were very apologetic about wait. After we sat down, there was a list of items that they were out of. We tried the southern egg roll which was absolutely delicious. As it should have been for $8 for one egg roll. Fried to perfection with a juicy piece of chicken in the middle and it seemed as if it was greens and cabbage mixed. It was very very good. The cornbread muffins topped with butter was very good also. I had the meatloaf with gravy and onions with mac n cheese, candied yams, and collard greens... meatloaf had a decent flavor but it was dry. Greens, VERY SALTY!! I couldn't eat more than a bite of it. The candied yams, too much cinnamon or nutmeg... it was so overpowering. My man had the whiting and shrimp platter. The shrimp was a little over cooked and chewy but had a good flavor. The fish, it was very good. Finally, we had the coconut pineapple upside down cake. It tasted like lemon cake with pineapple preserves... pineapple upside down cake with no cherries anywhere? Doesn't seem right. The strawberry lemonade was delicious. The atmosphere was okay. It was very pretty but it was just over packed for such a small location. The charge a 15% gratuity on the bill... but it didn't seem like enough so we left extra... for 4 meals, we paid a little over $200... We literally had the sweetest server ever! She was so kind and personable with my family and I. She made sure that we were well taken care of. She was quick with refills, and kept us up to date on how long our food should take to come out. I loved her positive energy that she was bringing! Each table gets a free set of corn muffins. They were absolutely deliciouss!! Next we had ordered the soul food egg rolls - its an egg roll stuffed with fried chicken and collards. It was my first time having it and it was soo good! It also came with a sweet honey glaze dip sauce which added even more flavor to the egg roll. For my main meal dish I ordered the fried chicken, mac and cheese, and cabbage. Also very good! Visited Southern kitchen last night my cousin was here from South Carolina and wanted her to have an unforgettable dining experience and I knew that southern kitchen usually delivers on everything. Food and customer service, well this was a very different experience for me. Our food was fast and but still cold. She ordered a chicken and waffle, what she receive should have not been served. The chicken was dry hard and lukewarm the waffle was flat not even a Belgian waffle. I was totally surprised and my cousin disappointed. I absolutely love this place and my hope that somehow the downtown energy and exceptional attention to detail would translate over to this location. My husband and I made a day trip up from central NC to try Southern Kitchen after seeing it on Gordon Ramsey's 24 Hours to Hell and Back show. We were greeted by one of the daughters and Ms. Shane herself! We had a little bit of a wait but it was well worth it. Started off with some of their homemade cornbread with honey butter and ordered the Southern Roll for an appetizer- holy moly - if you don't get anything else, you have to get this! Collards, cabbage, and chicken pairs with a sweet heat honey sauce. For our entrees we had Shrimp and Grits and the Southern Fried Pork Chop - first off the portion sizes are truly "southern" - if you leave here hungry it's your own fault. Shrimp were cooked great very flavorful. The pork chops were breaded and fried, but remained juicy, the brown gravy with onions was tasty too! Fried cabbage was great, had a bit of a sweet taste to it maybe with the seasoning they use. And let's not forget about that Mac and cheese! Totally to die for! My husband and I visited the new restaurant for our anniversary, and the atmosphere was wonderful. However, I was very disappointed with the food I ordered. I had the mac and cheese, collard greens, and a pork chop. While the pork chop was good, the mac and cheese had little to no cheese, and the collard greens were overly smoky. My husband ordered the short ribs with mashed potatoes, black-eyed peas, and stewed tomatoes. The first rib he cut into was tough, leaving him quite disappointed. For $45.00, the second rib was better but could have been better. Additionally, we didn't receive any bread with our meal. We also ordered a peach cobbler for dessert, and I don't understand why some people say cobbler is just peaches with crumbs on top. That's not a true cobbler. read more
