I ordered from Southern Cross Kitchen via DoorDash for a nearby stay. Simply put, the food was OK, but the presentation and state of the take out grocery bag (is this a restaurant or fast food joint?) was horrendous. It took almost an hour for them to make my food (and I'm assuming other orders as my Dasher made 2 other stops and provided updates on the wait time). By the time I received my food it was in a grocery bag that was soaked inside due to condensation. I ordered the hot honey chicken sandwich and the cheesesteak eggrolls. The eggrolls came in a proper takeout container and tasted OK, though I should've removed the bed of lettuce before saving them for later. After sitting for a while, the eggrolls absorbed the flavors of the lettuce and became bitter. It was not pleasant. The chicken sandwich came wrapped similar to what's expected from Burger King and was messy to eat, but it was better than I thought it would be. The hot honey didn't provide any heat, but the chicken was so crunchy around the edges. Last, the fries weren't great as they were placed in a paper envelope (also similar to what Burger King provides in a to-go bag) that was completely soaked. They were soft, but cooled for too long to hold any flavor. As mentioned it was an OK meal, but I wouldn't recommend it. Dining in the restaurant would likely provide a better experience. read more

TLDR: Good food, adequate but not great service, noisy room. We won't go back, but most people would enjoy it here. We were with a group of four. We had a nice meal, but it was not a great meal. The server was neutral and not overly friendly or informative. The room (lower level) was pretty noisy and we had trouble talking to each other. I ordered the gumbo. The server said it was not too hot but had a little kick. Heat is objective. I can handle a few splashes of hot sauce as reference. The gumbo was way too hot for me to eat. I only finished half. It was really good, but did not need that much heat. At no time did anyone ask if we were enjoying our meals (our server never checked in, except for dessert). The person clearing our dishes just smiled when I told him the dish was way too hot to eat. We ordered a peach cobbler for dessert. It was absolutely not a cobbler; it was more like a bread pudding. I looked up on Google where to eat brunch outside of the city and this place came up. I made a reservation and headed to the location. If you're coming from Philly and you're coming up Hector Street I suggest turning onto Ash Street and parking along there. The walk to the restaurant is short. There is a 2 hour parking limit closer to the restaurant. Atmosphere. Nice and lively. There were groups, so it was loud. You can sit at the bar upstairs or downstairs. They have a small patio and outdoor seating. Service: Sydney was awesome! She knew the menu and gave me suggestions as well as the special of the day. Danielle and her trainee were very engaging. Drink: I had the peach bellini and it was good. It had peach pieces! They also offer a mimosa tower for three or more people for $70. Food: I ordered different dishes. Their menu reeled me in. I ordered the following: Fried pickles because I love pickles but I wasn't a fan. It came with a red and white sauce which was good. I think it was the type of pickles used that I didn't like. Fried green tomato tower which was pimento cheese, zesty aioli, extra virgin olive oil, balsamic reduction. I didn't like this selection either. The tomatoes were not ripe. They were too hard. The sauce was good. I like saucey but this was too saucey for me. Fried Shrimp & grits: fried shrimp, cheddar grits, smoked gouda cream, sunny side up egg. This was good. Creamy and just the right size lumps. Great flavor. If I ordered this again, i would prefer grilled shrimp. It reheated well at home. I ordered a shrimp and grits flatbread to go for someone. It looked very interesting and messy, but I was told that it was very delicious even after reheating. They have weekly specials. On Wednesdays they have a dinner for 2 special for $45. That's awesome! they have a murder mystery dinner! I can't wait to check it out! Overall even though I only liked 1 out of 3 dishes, I would definitely go back to try some other items. Do not come here. My partner and I had an extremely uncomfortable and disappointing experience--we were essentially asked to leave because we were not considered "elevated enough" to be in the space. Let that sink in. As a resident of this area, I take pride in supporting local businesses, but this was beyond unacceptable. The treatment we received felt exclusionary, degrading, and rooted in bias. It did not feel like a safe or respectful environment for Black patrons, and that is something I cannot ignore. No one should be made to feel like they don't belong based on appearance or any other subjective standard. Businesses should be held accountable for how they treat people, and this experience fell far below any reasonable expectation of professionalism or basic human decency. I will not be returning, and I will be sharing this experience so others can make informed decisions about where they choose to spend their time and money. The food was basic and very underwhelming. As someone who doesn't love to cook, I cook have easily made all the dishes we had and they'd taste exactly like what we got. Just nothing special. We started with the 1/2 Pound Peel and Eat Shrimp. They were overcooked and kind of mealy. The tartar sauce that came with it was no good! Actually pretty bad. It tasted like a side of mayo. For entrees we ordered the Chicken 'N Waffles and the Half Slow Roasted Chicken. The chicken and waffles were pretty good. No complaints there. The waffle was especially good. My husband ordered the chicken. It looked good except for those collard greens. Heck no! LOL! They looked like someone went out back, pulled some greenery from the yard and threw them on the plate. I don't know what kind of collards those were supposed to be but I've never seen greens at a soul food restaurant looking like that. They'd be better off buying canned greens and serving those. The chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy were good but that chicken was dry. If it weren't for the plentiful amount of gravy that chicken would be a choking hazard. We also ordered the Jalapeño Cornbread to go with our entrees. That was a no. So dry we don't even bother eating it. It's really interesting because the website and menu give off elevated dining vibes and it is far from that. It doesn't need to be fine dining but it should be shown for what it is, which is casual dining. For example, stamping the name of the owner's website on the wine glasses you'd never seen in a finer dining restaurant but would see in a pub, bar type of place. Just mixed messaging. I can't believe I haven't been here yet! Went for Sunday brunch. We got the jambalaya, Chicken fried chicken, kids Mac and cheese and kids chicken fingers, chicken and waffles. The chicken fried chicken and chicken and waffles were devoured. I only ate half of the jambalaya because it was so filling. The kids food was very very good. The Mac and cheese had a smoky taste that was one of the best Mac and cheese ever. The chicken fingers were real ones that looked like they were battered as the same as the fried chicken breasts for their other dishes. I can't wait to return to try more! I've been to SCK a few times. The service is always good and food is superb. I always try something new each visit. The waiter suggested the popular breakfast quesadilla which was different for me. There was enough protein to keep you full and the breakfast potatoes were delicious. Wings were a good size and were fried enough for me! I wanted to try this place for a long time because it gets recommended a lot in various community groups. Reviewers typically highlight the friendly service here, but that was not my experience. The service was lukewarm. The staff saw me walk in and chose to keep doing their own thing instead of greeting me. When they came to hostess stand, I told them I wanted a seat for two and they said, "hold on" and ran off again. For context, the restaurant was not busy. From the beginning I felt like my presence was a nuisance to them. Food service was good. Someone took our orders, checked in on us, and the food came quickly. We ordered the lemonade mocktails. They were way too sweet. After adding half a glass of water, it was palatable. For food, we tried the fried pickles, jambalaya, shrimp and grits, and a side of biscuit. The fried pickles were pretty good. They are fried pickle chips. I was expecting fried pickle wedges. The jambalaya was a miss. It looked more like a salad than a stew. One dimensional flavor and not at all close to what I've tasted in the south. I enjoyed the Shrimp and grits, it is something I would order again. Biscuit was average, nothing memorable. If anything, it was on the dry side. The portions were huge! Neither of us finished our entree. If you're looking for value, this is a good spot. You will not leave hungry. My star rating is for food only. I normally don't care about service because my priority is food quality. We had the mimosa flight. We chose 3 flavors and they were gracious enough to add a 4th for a nominal fee. I prefer my mimosas to be on the sweeter side and again service was top tier and the server provided us with small side glasses of each juice for the flights. For appetizers we had the cinnamon beignets, breakfast potato's and the jalapeño cornbread. The beignets came perfectly flaky, warm and melt in your mouth. The plate included dark chocolate sauce and whipped cream as well as diced strawberry and sliced apples and oranges. Sooooo yummy! The jalapeño cornbread was dry and hard. Throw that away and never let it see the light of day again. Pure grit! Yuck! I expected warm and moist. It's a southern comfort food. So disappointing. The breakfast potatoes we asked for well done and they delivered! They were well seasoned and so delicious! We also had the deviled eggs which features 3 regular deviled eggs and 3 seasonal deviled eggs. The regular were hustled okra. The filling wasn't well seasoned. The seasonal was much better and the basalmic drizzle was a nice touch! Our main item was the bananas foster French toast. Perfectly done! Our server was attentive and kind. I would come back just because of her. She checked in regularly without being overbearing. We love love loved that this place offers all day brunch AND multiple happy hour options throughout the day. First time here. We were looking for some authentic southern food. The place is nice and the staff was friendly and helpful. We were there on a Sunday and were seated right away. My wife ordered the chicken wings and was disappointed with their dryness and lack of flavor. The cornbread was dry and hard as a rock with no spicy flavor. My fried green tomato BLT was very good. I called a few days in advance to request an outdoor table as the weather was going to be gorgeous and I wanted to bring my dog - I spoke with the manager who made sure to note my request in my reservation and that she'd spoken to me. Looking at the menu I had gotten excited to go to southern cross as a southern girl who misses that down home cooking. Didn't completely disappoint but didn't impress me either. The service was phenomenal and the drink menu looked great, wine was good as well. Ambience was amazing and we absolutely loved the back porch. We got the fried green tomato tower to start. My date had chicken and waffles and I had blackened catfish platter. Food was all around good but didn't really hit the spots I wanted it to hit. My first qualm being the way they're frying things. In my opinion fried catfish and fried green tomatoes should never be chicken fried! They should be fried with a cornmeal breading maybe cut with some flour. Doing everything chicken fried gives the vibe that the chef/kitchen doesn't want to deal with having two different dredges, which really isn't that hard. Chicken fried catfish is so wrong to me and I opted for blackened instead. Another qualm was the pimento cheese. It was all cream cheese? The peppers were great but having pimento peppers in it doesn't really automatically make it pimento. Should be shredded cheddar dukes and pimentos to qualify. With those characteristics the fgt tower was just a bit too heavy. Also should say that balsamic vinegar with pimento cheese is a very very strange choice and I opten for no balsamic. All in all flavors were decent if just a bit bland but I left wishing it had been a bit more authentic. That's what I get for leaving the south though, I guess. Please I beg of you take the time/effort to make sure that you are executing staples in a proper way. Otherwise it just comes across as gimmicky. Overall lots of potential here but I think chef needs to tidy up this menu and some techniques. read more

Apparently they're big on reservations, because we were there pretty early and they said they were all booked up except for the bar seats (which didn't matter to us). I highly recommend this place for brunch! My friend and I came here on Sunday and everything was delicious. They have a downstairs and upstairs area and an outdoor patio upstairs for seating. It came with six beignets and was served with whip cream, chocolate sauce, and an assortment of fruit. For my meal I was craving something savory and got the open faced biscuit sandwich and substituted the potatoes for tater tots. Everything I had to eat here was absolutely amazing!! Glad that it also held fruit, as some of the kids surprisingly didn't like the beignets but were happy to get into the chocolate. Son and DIL liked their drinks, and the kids enjoyed the lemonade. Fun fact, today was my first time in Conshohocken. And someone left me a nice little present. A solid three hours on the parking meter. My friend asked me to choose and after reading some menus I settled on Southern Cross. Turned out to be a really good pick. The servers led us to the upstairs deck, promptly gave us water and took our orders. I went with the Shrimp Po Boy. It was pretty enormous. There were four giant crispy shrimp sitting on the tastiest looking bread. I knew simply biting into this was not an option. I had to tackle it with a knife and fork. The roll was as good as it looked, crispy, luscious and chewy. The tomatoes were ripe and juicy, there was plenty of remoulade and the shrimp were perfectly cooked. My only gripe is that the big fat shrimp busted right out of his fried suit as soon as I bit into it. Nevertheless, all that creole flavor was there. My friend has the fried chicken sandwich hot honey style with fried pickles on top. Again, impressive plate. She devoured it. Finally a creme brulee arrived. I did not eat it but her eyes went dreamy with the first spoonful. This is a nice place with great ambiance and good food. Definitely worth your time if you find yourself in Conshy. read more

I cannot express how impressed I am with Southern Cross. We had a Post Wedding Bruch and from planning to clean-up it was absolutely wonderful. Kevin (GM) and the staff (Marquise and Matt) were awesome! We were placed upstairs and it was setup beautifully. Kevin was great on helping picking out what food items to order and the best way to go - we went with the limited brunch menu. (Which really was not limited.) The food was delicious and the service was just as good. It is safe to say that all of our guests left in a "food coma". The staff went out of their way to make my son's and new daughter-in-law's wedding lunch wonderful. I would recommend Southern Cross to anyone from a normal lunch/dinner to a catered event.
