Ambiance - super intimate, family owned restaurant Service - speedy & staff was nice Food - although rice fell apart upon picking up the pieces, they're super generous with their fish portions

We had a great first experience. They were very patient with our baby dropping everything on the floor. The gyoza were tasty. We loved the Chicago roll (and it was huge!). We also ate the Sunny roll, the fatty salmon , and the salmon roe. Our baby enjoyed the tamago. Everything tasted so fresh. Will go back!

Bridgeport DO NOT SNOOZE ON THIS PLACE!! It's the best place I've been to for sushi in a long time. The rock shrimp will have you shaking your head at how good they are!! The rolls.. fire!! So fresh.. so amazing. And it needs to be put on the map for one of the best places I've been to for sushi.... in years. Don't let the location fool you.. you won't be sorry. And ITS BYOB!! Hands down ... best spot

3 rolls and 2 sashimi lunch special

This is my favorite local spot to get sushi at. They have an amazing lunch special deal that you can not pass up on. 3 rolls and 2 pieces of sashimi for less than $15. The service is always great, the staff are friendly and attentive. Whenever I'm craving sushi, this is my go to spot. I've gotten the lunch special as takeout and have dined in. Both experiences have been great. Sometimes the quality of takeout sushi isn't as good as dining in, but both are similar. However, if you dine in, the lunch special comes with a choice of soup or salad. The location is small with only a few tables, but I've never needed to wait for a table. There's also lots of metered parking in the area. This is one of my regular spots that I've been going to for a while. Would highly recommend for that lunch special.

I decided to treat my friend out to dinner for his birthday and we decided on SKJR. So, let me get into it. The food was pretty good. I have to say having had sushi and sashimi in Japan in my time I have to say the quality was pretty good, the soft shell crab could have been a little more crispy. The taste was on par. The gyoza was looked okay but, my friend and I both agreed we that it could have been better from an overall cook time stand point. The sushi, sashimi was on point. I definitely would go back just for the sushi. The service was okay. There wasn't many people inside the shop and the server/waitress didn't seem very excited to walk us through any of the special items. The atmosphere or ambiance like I call it, was really nice. Everything seemed very clean and the décor really matched the environment. Overall, I would say definitely try the sushi and sashimi!

Kawa's lunch menu is unbeatable! $13 for 3 rolls, 4 pieces of sashimi, and either miso soup or a salad?! Say less! But of course, this isn't going to taste like a $100 omakase experience lol. Sometimes the rice can be a little better and the soup can be hotter. However, if you're looking for a quick, affordable lunch in this economy, Kawa's your best bet.

I can't believe it took us so long to find this neighborhood gem! My husband and I stopped in on a Saturday night for dinner. It wasn't very busy for dine in, but there were plenty of take-out orders. The ambience was very relaxing. It was quiet and they were playing calming pop music. Nice decor. Tables decently spaced. The bench seating was not particularly comfortable, but it was fine. Service was friendly and attentive but not pushy. Food came out quickly. BYOB! We had the salmon nigiri, yaki udon stir-fry with chicken, Anaconda roll and Halloween roll. The Anaconda roll was our favorite, very savory and rich. The Halloween was nice too, kind of spicy. The nigiri was good, it was nice to try their fish without adulteration. It was clean and served at a good temp. The Yaki udon was fine, but nothing special. We'll probably try a different noodle dish next time. Definitely looking forward to coming back!

I love Kawa! Whenever we can't think of where to get dinner and want to stay local, we never go wrong. We came in on Friday night. It was busier than usual but their service is always so quick. We got miso soup to start off along with the snow shrimp tempura. The snow shrimp tempura was so delicious! It reminded me of the honey walnut shrimp from taste of canton. It's nice and sweet. For dinner we got the tonkatsu ramen. My egg yolk was not runny enough but still good. The pork was amazing!! It was so crispy on the edges but by the time you got to the middle, it melted in your mouth. We ended our night with the little candy you get at the front desk. 100/10.

This is a hidden gem in the neighborhood. Small and cozy sushi spot with amazingly fresh food. I stopped my for a quick lunch for and ordered the salmon sashimi, shumai, Sunny Roll, and and Volcano Roll. I've been to this place a few times and I am never disappointed!

    Salmon teriyaki bento box

Really delicious and such an affordable price! The bento box was massive and so cheap! It was everything in the picture PLUS miso soup. The salmon was so nicely cooked.

The quality was great for its price! I ordered the 20 piece sashimi deluxe and it was only around $33 with thick solid cuts. The salmon, tuna, hamachi, red snapper, and escolar all tastes fresh and melts in your mouth. The raw sweet shrimp/ebi nigiri was okay. I liked the fried head more than the flesh. My only complaint is that the squid/ika nigiri didn't taste fresh; it tasted fishy and rubbery. Usually the good quality squid tastes sweet and slimy the more you chew it. The rice was also a little too dry and hard. The service is good. Ambiance is humble and cute. Overall, great place for sashimi for its price.

Im usually very skeptical on ordering sushi. It usually always arrived like warm or just isn't that good to start with. South Kawa delivered hot gyoza and some of the best rolls I ever had. I highly recommend the huge Chicago fire roll. I don't even know what's in it but it took two bites to fully finish one piece. Would order from here again and again. I gotta make a trip to stop in sometime. Thank you for another amazing sushi spot!

How does the lunch special work? What do you recommend for the lunch special?

You can choose from a list of rolls. I usually get the three roll meal, but I think they have options for 2-4 rolls as well. Good deal! Love the California, shrimp tempura, and sweet potato roll

Luckily I checked my order after I got into the car. The order was not correct. I ordered the seafood tofu stew soup, Korean vegetable pancake, chicken katsu box, and the egg toastwich. Instead of giving me the chicken katsu box, they gave me a chicken katsu toastwich. I quickly went back in and they made the chicken katsu box. The owner was very nice. She says she can give me a free drink because of the mistake. I got their brown sugar milk tea. The chicken katsu was pretty good. The chicken was tender and moist. I wish there was more sauce on it. The vegetable pancake was ok. I wish it was more crispy. The seafood tofu stew soup was not too spicy. It was just right for me. The interior design is very stylish. If you dine in, a robot will deliver the food to your table. They have plenty of tables for dining in. The place looks clean and it is an open kitchen, so you can see the whole kitchen. I would go back again to try other food since I think they added more items to their menu since I was there.

Still an amazing interior with several seating areas and different feels in each area. The problem is it's always empty, hopefully it picks up as the weather warms. Food is amazing, more of a Korean menu now with traditional boba tea offerings and still some sushi. They've added robot service as well which is always fun. Drinks are fast, food a bit slower. Really hoping this version sticks around longer.

I very much enjoyed my vegetarian ramen. The mushroom broth was very nice and I loved the tempura veggies that came on the side and I could dunk them. As for the food, the ramen was just okay. The broth could have used more flavor, and the dipping ramen in particular would have been much better if the broth was hotter. It came out lukewarm, which really took away from the experience. One highlight was the chicken karaage, which was nice and crispy. Since the mochi was not available, we ordered the matcha panna cotta instead, but that was also disappointing. There was barely any matcha flavor, and even the color seemed off. It was more of a mint green than an actual matcha green. Overall, the space is great, but the food did not quite live up to expectations.

( see chat gpt analysis of the reviews below) What I witnessed was probably the worst customer service, table grill failure and tablet ordering system failure all in one experience. Sort of like Lemony snickets - series of unfortnate events. I'm still confounded about the ratings. Did just have bad luck?? Table Grill: 0 / 5 Fire suddenly cut out after 20 mins and it was clear that propane tank was low. Server had no clear action other than to suggest to move the cheese corn off the grill. After taking his suggestion and the meat was still not cooking.( 10 mins later ) I had to flag him down the 2nd time. I had suggested we move to another table i saw that was open and he accomodated. Grill was not frequently changed like other bbq restaurants and looked completely charred and black by 20 mins. Oil was never applied to the grill . Meat constantly stuck to the grill wires making it difficult to turn the meat without ripping it. *Note to management: Make sure you quality check and confirm propane levels before you start the day. Do assurance check towards the evening to prevent any grill issues as we experienced. Server was not trained to be able to handle this situation. Servers had mentioned the fautly table was a known issue no corrections were made by management. Add oil on the table so customers can self oil the grill. Tablet Ordering System: 1/5 ( touch screen tablet) : After the Grill cut out , i pressed "call attendant " button on the tablet screen several times and no response. Looked across the room and server was happily busy catering to other tables.. waited 15 mins to flag him down to make him aware of the table flame. Tablet also did not propery input my order and often times found myself wondering if the orders went through. I had ordered Tom Yum soup and nothing came the entire dinner.. even mentioned it to my server. No action was taken. The real kicker was at end of the night i saw 3 orders of Tom Yum Soup on my bill. ( see attached pic ) Seriously guys?!! Server said he was not able to see my orders. * Note to management: Make sure you do a dry run of all the tablets and ordering system before you deploy tablets during peak busy times. Remove the tablets that are not functional. Its that simple. Customer service: 3/5 While I appreciated the server making attempts to correct gas grill error and tablet error. There were gaps in his service and attentiveness. He did not articulate or project his voice in the noisy environment and often felt he was mumbling. Since i was a new customer, I found it very difficult to understand the complex ordering systems which was timed every x minutes and limited to x amount. It seriously was a guess and see what happens ordering experience. Server only added to the confusion. Still unclear why Google Maps has this restaurant rated 4.9? In fairness he did comp my bill $15 for the series of errors. Still ended up paying $288. go figure. Food: 2/5 Salad was an embarraging 2 -3 tablespoons ( see attached pic) I dont think they really want you to have salad here. you have to order salad probably 3-4 times to get a regular size restaurant salad. Meat: 4/5 Good some highlights with Wagyu and Pork Belly. Sides: Dismal - 2/5 Edamame, veggies, wakame salad, lettuce, etc. probably the biggest offender. portions were small / maybe 2-3 tablespoon. if you wanted more you have to go through the ordering system. And yes there is the limit of how many items you can order at a time. Sunday May 18 9pm.

Seating was comfortable. I tried their express lunch menu, which is a great option if you're here during lunch time. You get to pick 3 items from the list and I chose tako taco (a little spicy but highly recommend- one of my favorite things that day), salmon avocado (I'm not a personal fan of the Meyer lemon sauce), and tuna avocado rice bowl. Each item is smaller portioned but all together it's a substantial lunch set. I also tried the express sushi and sashimi lunch set, which comes with a delicious seaweed salad which I would order on its own as an appetizer. The lunch set comes with their "oh-my-kaze." This includes salmon, hamachi and tuna. One piece of tuna was substandard and had a big piece of sinew in it. Our server quickly switched it for another piece. The only dish I would skip is the Peking duck sizzling rice. The taste was fine- a little on the sweeter side with the hoisin sauce but the portion was more of an appetizer size. It's also not a true Peking duck, which focuses on a crispy duck skin and this dish just featured duck meat.
