If the potatoes are so burnt, they are hard, black and you cannot find a potato soft enough to stick a fork in it, then that is just neglectful or you do not care. I tend to believe in the good in people, so I am guessing they did not want to disappoint a customer that ordered potatoes by telling them we ran out. Would you like something else instead. I have been in for lunches and salads and soups are above my standards and their challah bread French toast makes wonder how could anyone put up with Texas Toast. Their coffee cake is to die for.
