Super helpful service - needed some cider yeast and some airlocks. The guy that helped me was available for assistance when I needed it, was even able to find a couple of things in the back that were out of stock in the front, and had some great suggestions re: the flavor profiles of using different yeasts. But also did not hover and let me wander through the store too. These folks are the gold standard for homebrew supply operations. I've been brewing at home since 1992 and home has been up and down the left coast in a number of cities. For beer supplies, I've had to make do with places that realized they were the only game in town and charged exorbitantly, and I've walked into places that were so fly-by-night sketchy looking, I didn't expect to see them open long. As lazy, aspiring cider makers, we walked in here after a Costco run. We knew exactly what we needed: cider yeast, and an airlock. The idea was to toss the yeast into our 100% apple juice gallon-sized bottles from Costo, screw in the airlock in place of the bottle cap, wait a couple of weeks, and produce apple cider of mysterious strength. The two employees in the store were very helpful in explaining the different yeast strains to us newbies. The great part was that they were in no way condescending, and were happy to answer our very basic questions. They also told us to just come back to the store in the event things didn't work out so that they could help figure out what went wrong and guide us in our next experiment. I really appreciate that level of customer service, especially in a new endeavour! It's now been about a week since we began our experiment. The dry English cider yeast is working away at the apple juice and producing a steady stream of bubbles. So far, so good! If I ever make the foray into beer-brewing (it's a much more involved process), I will definitely head back to Sound Homebrew Supply for both equipment and helpful tidbits. read more

I just stopped by Sound this afternoon, looking to get started on a batch for the first time after a 9-month hiatus. The owner Mike was super-friendly (but not in an annoying way) and really helpful. I told him what style I was looking to brew and he set me up trying out a clone recipe of one of my favorite beers! I'm a relatively new brewer- I've done 3 successful brews and assisted on 4 or 5 others (all extract) so I'm still navigating the finer points of the whole thing. Mike walked me through the ingredients list, measured out and packaged everything for me, worked out some tweaks I wanted to make and made sure I was comfortable with the whole process. Overall, a wonderful experience! I'd highly recommend this place to new and experienced brewers. I also noticed some key differences between Sound and the other local brew shops: -Mike sells neat little "ingredient kits," pre-packaged boxes of ingredients, perfect for new brewers. He currently only has "brewer's best" brand and some similar canned clone kits, but he's planning on pre-packaging his own recipes in the future, which will be a nice touch. - The shop is really well organized and has a really nice selection of specialty additives and spices. - He has a really large selection of bottles for sale- everything from neat square bottles to growlers and grolsh-style bottles. -Mike is super-approachable and friendly. It is clear he tries hard to make brewing a joyful experience for everyone and encourages his customers to call him with any questions or problems. read more

First, I'll reemphasize the tip from a previous review about finding the place: It's on 5th Ave South, just south of Michigan. Across 5th from the 76 station. The sign is not particularly easy to see, especially headed East on Michigan... Also, a note about that previous review: they do have a digital scale now! No idea what the capacity would be, but they do have it... I don't know much about home-brewing yet so I can't speak to the selection - which seems extensive in my limited experience - but I can speak to the extreme patience and helpfulness of Michael, the owner/operator/only employee. I was at Sound Homebrew Supply for no less than two hours yesterday while Michael slowly and patiently explained the entire process and answered my extensive questions. Side note: I was a chemistry major, am naturally meticulous, and thus have a propensity to try to understand every nuance of a process before I begin. I read up before going to talk to Michael but he took the time to walk me through the entire process and answer every question I had as we walked through the process. I am so happy Sound Homebrew opened up in Georgetown! I've gotten into home brewing after a 15 yr hiatus, but now I'm back baby! Now I have a local place to pick up dozens of types of grains, dozens of types of yeasts, arrays of malts, and quality brewing equipment. Michael hooked me up with the upper end starter kit with glass carboys, all the tubing and bottling equipment, books, sanitizers and a copper wort chiller. I've made 4, five and ten gallon batches of beer this summer alone with recipes from the stores vast library, each one coming out very drinkable. I've gotten a lot of compliments from my microbrew aficionado friends. There's also everything you need to make homemade wine here as well, something I haven't tried yet, but would like to get into. If you are interested in getting into home brewing, or already do, I'd give 'em a shot. It's a lot easier than you may think, and you can make a high end beer for less than the cost of an average beer. The hours are very convenient too- he's open till 7pm four nights a week. read more

Tip for those trying to find the place: It's on 5th, south of S Michigan, across from the 76 gas station. Sound Homebrew is very well organized and has a pretty wide selection considering they've only been open 1 1/2 weeks. Dry goods such as malt extract, oak cubes, yeast nutrient, etc have a very good selection. He also had some things that I've never seen before, like large splash-guard funnels. Prices seem very good, in line with other local stores (Bob's, Cellar, Larry's; not Mountain Hb b/c Mtn is 20-30% higher than all the other stores). For me, the most important thing in a homebrew store is the grain scale and miller. Unfortunately Sound doesn't have a digital scale - they have a grocery-style scoop scale that goes up to 10lb (but I was only able to fit 8lb on it before I ran the risk of overflowing the scoop). My main problem with analog scales is that they're not as accurate and are a pain to use. Quick, how much is 0.2lbs in ounces? And how will you measure that when the scale doesn't have fractional ounce markings? Also, the scale reading changes based on what angle you look at it. Slight inaccuracy in measuring out high potency malts such as black patent or peated malt actually can have a significant effect on the finished beer, especially when you're doing a 2.5g batch. The English weight system is difficult enough as-is; I hope Sound gets a modern digital scale with precision to the hundredths, like Bob's Hb has. It's also worth noting that the miller does a very fine crush, with some pulverization of grain husks. This can be viewed as a positive by some people, including myself, who prefer a fine crush for higher extraction on a system that doesn't have stuck sparge issues (I use BIAB). But just a heads up to AG brewers who tend to get stuck mashes, you may want to add some rice hulls at Sound. Also this is a non-issue for new brewers or extract brewers. And in a clean location to boot, A few other places I visited had a slightly less clean feel to them. The new owner John is so helpful, and genuinely feels like he wants to help. One of the most notable experience for me was when I brought something up to the counter to pay for it, and telling John what I wanted to do with it... he told me to try another approach to get better results....which coincidentally he didn't sell. He could have kept quiet...AND made a sale, but he didn't. And he was right, I noticed great results with his recommendation. Just sayin. read more

This is my new favorite brewing supply of the four in the Seattle area I've visited (the others are the dusty shop, the slight-snobby shop and the pricey shop). His prices are reasonable, and the shop is squeaky clean. I asked Mike about substituting some hops I had at home for some in the recipe and he offered to recalculate the quantities for me. This place has it all! They sell full home brewing kits for beer and cider, cheese making kits, and they sell rhizomes in the Spring! (Pre-order going on now!). They (seem-to me) carry all the components necessary to homebrew some beer. They carry already measured boxes for people trying to just make a brown ale, IPA, etc., and they also provide dry/wet extract malts and dry grains for those who want to experiment! A cool item i saw were the bags of dried rose hips. This started out being a great place to go, but unfortunately the last couple times I've been in it seems to be "slipping". I went in a couple weeks ago on the weekend and there was a woman getting grains etc, the male employee asked if I was going to need grains milled anytime soon, I said no but I did have some questions so as soon as he was done, I'd like to ask them. I waited for some time, as the lady was getting a lot of stuff and while I waited I looked around noticing that most of the stuff I wanted was out of stock, but I wanted to ask the questions anyway so I stuck around. In the meantime, while I was just standing there waiting, another woman came into the store and was looking into the yeast cooler. Well, the employee finished up his sale with the first lady and walked straight past me to to "new" woman and asked her what she was looking for and began helping her while I just stood there looking at him. Well, since they didn't have what I wanted I just went ahead and walked out and ordered online. I went back in again this last weekend and once again most of the hops I needed were out of stock and there were a lot of other hops out of stock too, I walked around looking for other ingredients while the same employee from above just sat at the front counter not looking like he wanted to do anything at all, definitely not asking if anyone needed help. I ended up asking about the stock and he just said "we're out" I asked when they'd have them he said "try back Tuesday" The guys are definitely nice here, and a month ago I would have given it at least 4 stars, and I'm really hoping I just hit a bad couple of weeks for the place, but it's definitely been really disappointing the last couple times I've been in. read more

I just discovered this place online and it's definitely a new favorite! I've only made hard cider once but I was eager to try again so I went to pick up some yeast. I have been to many homebrew shops in the area and have found that Michael is by far the most patient proprietor in the land. I made a point to stop in during his opening week and have been back many times since. The selection of equipment and ingredients is growing but more than fits my needs as a brewer. The location relative to downtown, West Seattle and all of south Seattle is excellent with easy access and great parking. If you are looking to get started with beer, wine or cheese making and want to buy locally this is the place to go. Excellent shop, nice owner, best grain selection in town that I've found with a great selection of hops and yeast too. I think the grain mill must be calibrated perfectly. I've got the best conversions from the crush on that mill over others around town. Plus he has yeast starter gear and all the gear a novice or expert could want to brew with. I have not experienced a home brew supply store yet that deserves less than 5 stars. Mainly because the folks who open and run them tend to love home brewing and enjoy sharing their expertise with others. I am so glad that Sound Homebrew has opened here as it saves me from either driving down to Kent or way up to north Seattle. Now I have no excuse not to brew every chance I get. They also have the best price I have seen on cornelius kegs, even beat internet prices which would also have charged me hefty shipping costs. The selection is really impressive and if you don't find what you are looking for Mike will either find it in the back or recommend a good substitute. Ben is awesome. He's honest about where to spend and where to save, he always has great brewing tips, and he offers suggestions without being pushy about them at all. He's content to leave you to your own devices if that's how you like it, but I always love to talk to him when I come in. I always seem to learn something new.
