My husband and I stopped on the way to MI. We sat in the bar side in the booth. If you are kind of big person it maybe a tight squeeze for you. We were there in the afternoon so it was quiet in sense not a lot of talking noise and music at same time. The wait staff were great! Very polite and offered suggestions when asked. We decided to split a full rack of ribs and two sides. Ribs were excellent with a great smoky flavor and tender melts in your mouth well at least mine. No sauce needed in my opinion. Now my husband loved their award winning sauce and it did taste good. Potato salad was made different than what I ever had before. Honestly it wasn't my fav but I would give 4/5. Coleslaw was good. I have been hearing about Soul Pig for a long time since moving to Van Wert, but never went. One day I had to travel to the post office in Decatur to renew my passport and drove through downtown Decatur and saw that Soul Pig was there. I decided to come back, bring my family and try it out. We came one friday night, days before Christmas 2023. It was a frigid night and we were hoping some good bbq could bring some warmth. We came in, the place was packed. In order to get a table, we told them we would be willing to sit in the only picnic style table they had in the place. Not the most comfortable choice, but we were famished! Its not a large restaurant, so theres not a lot of tables available if you do come. The waiter quickly got our drink order, beers. We also ordered an appetizer. We started out by trying the pepper-jack and bacon hushpuppies. They were full of flavor, heat and also had a surprising sweetness to them. I can now understand why all of the recommendations I got about Soul Pig stressed the need to try this from their menu. I can see them being addicting. We then ordered our main courses. My mom got the mixed bbq platter of two meats and two sides. She only really wanted the bbq pulled pork, but my brother and I wanted to try out the smoked sausage. So we got that off her plate. Her sides were collard greens and baked beans. she loved her dish, and we also loved the sausage. My brother ordered the Marko Burger with fries which we enjoyed. So my wife and I went to this nice little place last night for dinner while she was on a business trip in town and all the reviews and everything we've heard about it suggested that this place Is phenomenal. From the outside it really doesn't look like much, on the inside it's still kind of looks like a dive bar. The food and however was delicious. Everything had a great smoky taste, was very tender, and looked to be of great quality. The reason I only gave this place 3 stars is because while my wife was sipping her drink last night a shared of glass that was inside her drink came up through her straw and cut her lip. At this point in our night we really didn't want to cause a scene or bring it to the attention of the waitress who also really wasn't that friendly anyway and treated us more like an inconvenience than a customer. We felt it was best just to pay and leave. Although the food was delicious, we will never go back. My rating from 2018 of 2 stars remains. It took 2 years for me to try Soul Pig again. Again we were disappointed. The hushpuppies were over cooked - fried so long the were dried out and dark brown.. similar color as the chicken. We didnt taste any bacon or heat from pepper-jack. They were sweet like an over fried Jiffy muffin. The chicken had a good smoke flavor but was dry. The burger was ordered medium but came very well done. The brisket topping was also dry, but had a good flavor. The fries were ok. The mac-n-cheese tasyed good but was luke warm. The collargreens were horrible. This was the order of taste experience: bitter, very salty, vinegary, spicy. I took 2 bites and left the rest. Take these off the menu or find a better recipe. You always save the best bites for last... ours were the drinks. I will say that both barbeque sauces were good. I would buy the sweet barbecue if it were in stores. read more

When I go out for BBQ, I have high expectations when it comes to my food experience. I was extremely disappointed with what I was served. I got a two meat plate with two sides, collard greens and black eyed peas. The greens were cooked to mush and were over salted. The peas also were overcooked and again heavy on the salt. Biggest let down was the meat itself. I love smoke flavor and it wasn't there in the pulled pork or in the turkey. Both were dry, salty, and completely lacking in any kind of smoke. The brisket my husband has was dry and had zero smoke to it. For what we paid I was expecting more and it wasn't there at all. I'll stick to my husband's BBQ. read more

The hush puppies were pretty good also. I felt that the price was fair, I paid around 20 for a sandwich with a side and an appetizer. Soul Pig was very talked up, but just didn't meet my expectations. They have several bbq options on the table, but they are all pretty odd tasting. I wasn't a fan of any of them, and that's saying something because I LOVE bbq. The baked beans are also very different than usual; I think you either love them or hate them. I also thought it was weird that they serve slices of bread as sides with some of the meat. For me personally, when I eat bbq I just want bbq--and I feel that Soul Pig just tries too hard. read more
