Overall, this place is pretty good. The server was very friendly, and the outdoor patio is great for summer. The food was decent--good, but not great. Having been to Cambodia twice, I'd describe it more as Cambodian fusion than truly authentic. That said, the prices are pretty reasonable for Seattle and it's worth a visit. This is definitely a family style restaurant, and 3 small plates and 2 entrees was enough to feed my group of 5. The best was the pork belly, truly a must try. What amazing service! The staff here are truly wonderful and a pleasure to be around. The cocktails were top notch and so incredibly unique. This gorgeous little Cambodian restaurant in Greenwood lives up to the hype. We arrived just after they opened at 5pm on a Thursday and the place was already starting to fill up. We sat at the bar and chatted with the bartender. The ambiance is soft, dark, and inviting but the decor is quite festive and intricate - a nice combination. The drinks were pricey but fun and inventive. I ordered the pork belly, which was delicious (love the egg - a nice addition), but far too much fat in one dish for my sensitive stomach. I would recommend sharing a couple dishes if you're going for that one. The stuffed eggplant dish was pretty good. The mushroom khmeraage was hot and crispy and we loved the "crack" sauce the bartender recommended. Speaking of the bartender - he overheard my friends sharing their engagement with me and ordered us a free dessert to celebrate the special moment. Greatly appreciated. Sophon is the newest kid on the block within Phinney Ridge, which seems to be a covert hot spot for local noteworthy restaurants. Thanks to the power of social media, Sophon instantly landed on my radar upon soft launch and piqued my interest. As many locals who have been here for a while, most southeast Asian food establishments in seattle are hidden hole in the wall mom and pop businesses. Admittedly, I couldn't help but have a bit of skepticism when I saw how ornate and high scale Sophon's interior and plating was through other reviews. I know that any cuisine can be elevated but I was curious to see for myself if their food delivered on authenticity and flavor with their prices. We walked in on a random Saturday night and were seated immediately at the bar top. First, I have to applaud their decor that somehow marries classy and paying homage to Cambodian culture. The staff were extremely welcoming, friendly, and helpful from the start of our meal to the end. We got the khmeraage mushrooms, papaya salad, stuffed eggplant, and braised pork belly. According to the bar manager, these are his top 4 recommendations on the menu and we immediately understood why after we cleaned our plates within minutes! My favorites had to be the mushroom and eggplant. To me, these were very unique while letting distinctive southeast Asian flavors shine through. Did I mention these two items are vegan? It's almost impossible to find delicious vegan food in Seattle. When you add their signature "crack sauce" to any of their dishes, it takes your tastebuds to another level and we couldn't get enough of it. My least favorite was the papaya salad. Although papaya salad is a classic southeast Asian dish, it was way too spicy for my personal preference. The bar manager noticed I was in pain and kindly offered a shot of their coconut cream to combat the heat. The total bill came out to ~$90 for 4 dishes, which I thought was absolutely worth the food portion sizes and quality. Overall, I highly recommend this as a date spot and will continue to suggest Sophon to my friends! I am overwhelmed with joy Sophon opened in Seattle. It brings our flavors to the food scene in Seattle, and I think it is incredible. I have had the privilege to eat khmer food my entire life. From my mom, aunties (thank you ming, om, e, pou), I tried the same dishes prepared differently across the provinces in Cambodia. Through these different expressions, I learned a little more about Cambodia. Sophon allows others to have that same experience. He shares his family flavors through his recipes. Ask him the significance about a dish, and you will learn a little more about our culture. I love his concept because it showcases the khmer diaspora experience in America. It is exciting to see it gain traction within the food scene as others discover it. I applaud the chef and the entire team for creating such a personal, cool, and authentic experience. This could easily be a 5 star review on my next visit. They are still in their soft opening. We tried: cucumber salad, cauliflower, morning glories, pork belly and steak. Only thing we didn't absolutely love was the steak. It was tough and a little too pungent in flavors for us. I wouldn't order it again. That being said, the pork belly entree was insanely good. Blew us away! I'd say the same about the cauliflower and morning glories. Staff was great. Only thing that was a little off putting... two times we were asked if we were ready to get boxes while we were literally still eating, fork in hand. The cocktails we ordered were fantastic (the "Sratn" and "Khlang"), as well as the food (the Kroeung Khmeragge with chicken and Kha Sach Chrouk). The server was also excellent and helpful in recommending dishes. The only odd part was being told by the hostess as we were seated for our 6:00 reservation that "Someone else has reserved your table for 7:30," so basically, we needed to clear out by then. I understand that this is a very popular restaurant, but it made an otherwise enjoyable experience feel rushed. I will likely not return because of this. There has to be a more subtle way to ensure multiple dinner seatings in a night (as it turns out, we were done by 7:15 anyway). Perfect for a hot day like today. This was the best chicken karaage I've ever eaten. Big chunks of tender chicken in a seasoned crunchy crust- don't even get me started on the dipping sauce! This review comes from someone who is a local to this neighborhood who has been to Sophon about 6 times since they've opened and wanted to give an honest review: -Overall, the food and drink are the best part about Sophon. The chicken khamarrage and the pork belly are the two dishes that have stood the test of time as amazing since our first visit. We also have really loved the blended drink (mekong--the one that made this place famous). With that being said, the menu has gone through a few iterations and not all of the changes have been ideal. For example, the Mekong is in a noticeably smaller can than before for the same price. Also, we loved the taste of the original papaya/mango salad, however, it has since changed a few times and now is not something we cannot stomach due to the addition of the crab. I realize that this is a personal preference, but wanted to highlight that the inconsistency of the food is something that deters us from coming back more regularly--we find a dish we like, and it often gets changed. -The service here has also been very inconsistent. When we first started coming, the staff were attentive and thoughtful, giving us recommendations based on taste preference and allergies. We even enjoyed sitting up at the bar and getting to know the staff (as I said, we are locals). However, the last three times we've come over a span of 8 months or so, I've not seen the same staff working. In addition, the staff seem to be disengaged. We came for a birthday dinner in May, and the drinks took so long that we actually had to get up from the table and go to the bar and ask about the order as our waitress had not checked in on us. We came to find out the order was never put in. The last time we sat at the bar, it was almost impossible to get someone's attention to order more food, and last night when I went we waited 20 minutes before someone came and said hello, during a time of day that seemed otherwise not too busy. I'm not sure exactly what more I can say on this, other than the vibe of the place seems off from what it once was. All in all, I would say that Sophon is worth coming in to try the food, especially if you are from out of town, but it is not a place that we are incorporating into our rotation of great eats on the ridge. If we try it later on and feel that the food is more consistent or the staff are more attentive, we could be persuaded to change our minds. read more

I understand that this is presented as a fine dining Khmer restaurant/introduction to Khmer food for those who aren't familiar with it, but some of the flavors felt watered down and didn't quite capture the true essence of Cambodian cuisine. For example, the fish curry didn't taste authentic at all and completely missed the essence of true num banhchok. My boyfriend, who has celiac disease, said that the gluten-free fried chicken was the best one he had tried. The batter was crispy, light, and flavorful. The pork belly dish was the highlight - it was so tender that it melted in my mouth. The pickled onions paired perfectly with the pork. The cocktail selection was exceptional, featuring truly unique cocktails. For dessert, I wasn't particularly fond of the ginger topping as it added an overly spicy taste to the mochi ball. We went for Happy Hour and really enjoyed the food. The chicken khmeraage is their version of chicken karaage and it was delicious. We tried the green mango salad, which got one thumbs up and one thumbs down. The P'set soy curl "faux -hok" k'tiss is a babaganoush dip with a delicious mushroom 'sauce' served with fresh and pickled vegetables. Sophon is awesome, and I'm so glad to have it in the neighborhood. Been dying to try since they have opened and finally got a chance to do a walk-in right when they opened at 5 (prob actually got there around 5:15) for a party of 3 and got seated right away. After that there was a bit of a wait to be seated. It was warmer weather when we went so I'm not sure the fall/winter patio situation but at the time the patio was a walk-in only designated space so that was nice! Hopefully they have some heaters so they can continue that as it gets cold. The food was phenomenal and so flavorful. The other people in the party have not had Cambodian/khmer food before and the server was really awesome in explaining the dishes to us. We had an event after this, so we only got a few things to share between us 3. We had the papaya salad, the prahok k'tiss, and the stirfried greens. It was all soooo good and perfect amount to share between us three. We split a bottle of wine so we didn't get a chance to try the cocktails so that will be next time for sure! read more
