If you're thinking about starting locs, look no further than Sophisticated Loc Salon. A family friend introduced me to Fajr, and a year later, I'm still thrilled with my choice. Fajr really knows her stuff. Every time we chat, I learn something new. She's the real deal! Every visit feels like catching up with friends, and the whole team is just so warm. Communication regarding schedules and making appointment tweaks a breeze! read more

First time going , I haven't had the best experiences with my attempts to find a loc stylist who really makes me feel good with my hair , I didn't have the best experience , as my time is important to me and I was waiting in the cold for almost an hr . However the owner ,and other stylist was apologetic. I got a wash and trim and palm twist , my hair is short , the style was ok . Im big on energy and because I liked theirs I'm going to give it another try and maybe can change my perspective . I just felt like for the time etc and the circumstance maybe something more could've been done . I did get a complimentary oil from them as well as purchase one . The price for palm twist and style and wash is a bit more than I have been paying for my length and what I get done but all and all ok . read more

I've been coming here to get my hair retwisted, never had an issues - Fajr always did a great job washing and retwisting. But If you're considering color - RUN! I spent 4 hours in the salon and walked out looking nothing like what I requested. I asked for an ombré, with natural dark brown at the root transitioning to a dark auburn color I already had in my hair. The color ended up being jet black, uneven, with no ombré transition. When I pointed out it was uneven (one side higher than the other), she offered to fix it but was out of dye and said that I could come back next week to get it fixed. I told her I had an event the next day and needed it fixed ASAP, so she sent the receptionist to go buy some more. Eventually, she did even it out, but the coloring is atrocious. The top is an unnatural looking black and did not transition/blend to my existing color. I'm spending my weekend trying to lift the color and fix the botched job. So if you're looking for color, it's worth seeking out a trained colorist! read more

I'd highly recommend this place. I got loc extensions. This is a mother/daughter team. They were highly professional, knowledgeable, kind and accommodating. True artists. The shop was very clean and nicely decorated. Even the clients had good vibes. They're worth every single penny. read more

Sophisticated Loc Salon - Hair Salons Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

Though I found this place 6 years ago when I cut off my first set of locs, I always said I would try them out one day, if I was to start again(this is my 3rd set). I still stuck with my original locticians way across Brooklyn(Flatbush, parkslope) just to do a wash/retwist- both costing me time, and money. But then I decided to take the leap...and I'm happy I found a loctician close to home now. This mother/daughter duo is a great team. . read more

The prices have gone up too much. The staff member Kim was very argumentative when I asked about the price change or the late. I was charged a full late fee, but I was never told about the late fee at all. I just learned about the late fee, and my daughter has been going to this salon for a few years. I wouldn't recommend this salon to anyone who has locs. read more

I get more hair retaliated once a month here and they do a amazing job. I know because people wanna take my stylist number every damn time I leave this place. The vibe is cool, the wait is never bad because they actually take appointments and stick to them. I love the owner, the hair oil that's sold is so good, And they even sell cool bracelets. I really don't like a lot of people in my hair. And moreover, I don't like going a whole lot of places to get my hair done. Like a lot of poeple, I like ONE person, who really knows and understands MY hair to care for it if I can't. I met Fajr when she worked at Tendrils downtown and at that point she cut my hair so that I could have an easier go when my daughter was born. That was in 2011. I hadn't gone to another salon for a hair cut since. But I sought her out when I was ready to cut again at the end of 2013 - and she did NOT disappoint. Firstly, the salon is so cozy and wonderful, if I didn't have to run that day, I could have stayed there all day. The staff is so pleasant and accommodating, I loved the conversation and the most important thing? She respected what I asked of her for my hair and did exactly what I requested with professionalism and courtesy. This isn't only for locs. I don't have locs / dreads. I wear my hair naturally and out of twists or plaits but want to go somewhere that won't judge me if I come in and want a blow out and she was clear to let me know if I wanted to do that - it was my hair and she would do the very best to care for it and make sure that it would come out healthy either way. Now that this salon and Fajr are closer to where I live than before, I'll be visiting regularly for my trim and color touch up... but I'm rocking my pixie natural and LOVING it (so is everyone else!) Great place - I highly recommend! read more

I loved every single thing about my visit to Sophisticated Loc's. Shaquora has extensive skills and experience working with hair and a wonderful, warm personality. She is also highly professional. The atmosphere in her salon is beautiful and comfortable, and showcases the gorgeous dolls (soft sculptures) she crochets. Before I visited her in August 2012, I was so worried that my dreadlocks were damaged beyond repair. I'd had trouble finding someone who could naturally tighten mature whitelady dreads. Not only did Shaquora and her talented daughter trim, tidy, manicure and re-lock my dreads to perfection, but they did it quickly for a fantastic price. And from what felt like the comfort of my own home -- tho looked more glamourous! I'm thrilled I found Shaquora, and will without a doubt be returning to her when my dreads need maintenance. I can't recommend her highly enough! Thank you Shaquora, see you next year :-) read more

LOVE THESE LADIES! I have been taken care of by Shaquora and Fajr and have never left disappointed. My hair is extremely fine which is exasperated by the fact that I bleach and color my hair so it is prone to breakage. My edges are also very fine. They are so knowledgeable and experienced that my hair isn't a challenge. My appointment time is always honored and I never feel rushed. I usually come in with a picture and they are able to achieve the look I want in a way that works well with my hair texture. I exclusively come to this salon when it comes to any type of braiding or extension services I DO NOT TRUST ANYONE ELSE to add hair or braid my hair. After having enough experiences at other salons where I left unhappy or worse with hair breakage, I am hooked on sophisticated locs salon. read more

These ladies are magicians!! I had untouched unkept dreads. My hair has come back from the dead with the help of this place. These sisters are professional, knowledgeable, and all around the best to ever do it!!! The prices are so reasonable. They have warm inviting beautiful personalities, and an atmosphere that welcomes you in whatever state your hair may be in. The service is impeccable and incomparable to anything else I've ever seen. I would highly recommend this salon to anyone who will listen. My only regret is that I did not have a bigger tip to give. read more

I love this Salon! Fajr is amazing as is her mom and her sister who also work at the shop. The energy is great and their in house all natural products are the absolute truth! Fajr started treating my locs about 4 months ago. When I first went to see her I had severe breakage at the crown of my head and at the nape. Fajr immediately suggested a repair regime that was natural, affordable and efficient. 4 months later and my locs are noticeably healthier and I'm no longer experiencing any breakage at all! Thank you Fajr!!! read more

I am new to the city and was looking for someone to take care of my hair just as my stylist did back home. I found this salon in the area, called the same day and Shaquora was able to fit me into her schedule. She explained how I needed to take care of my hair and recommended products (since I recently transitioned to all natural hair), and have been wearing a combination of Afro twist outs and braids. I was very pleased with the outcome, a braided Mohawk with an Afro twist out. Also, she was very quick, and that is sooo appreciated when it comes to hair salons. read more

I've been coming to Sophisticated for around a year now for loc maintenance from Fajr and my hair has been healthy and growing ever since. The salon is quaint and appointments can fill up quickly especially around holiday times and its for good reason. They use quality products, most are natural without a lot of chemicals and they're easy on your hair. There's an essential oil blend they make in house and sell that i'd recommend anyone looking to give their hair/locs some moisture and shine in-between appointments. I personally love the mint scent. read more

Went and got my hair done yesterday and I loved the energy in the shop. Fajr did a very nice Updo on my locs and I love it!! I will definitely return here for future hair do's. I made another appointment 2months later and she scheduled me for a day that they were closed!!! I drove all the way from Long Island to sit in front of her shop for an hour. I called and I couldn't even leave anymore msgs, it's been 2weeks and still no response to my initial voice mail. SMFH this is bad business and it makes me no longer want to support a fellow Sistah. read more

Really enjoy coming here. Everyone is friendly and courteous. I don't mind taking that hour and a half drive up from CT. It's worth it!

This place is amazing!! I had loc extensions done at a different salon and I thought I had ruined my hair. Sue not only fixed my locs they now feel healthy and moisturized!! I wish I had found this salon for my install. The two sisters are really sweet and will answer any and all questions, they also sell homemade oils and shea butter. I bought the lemon scented one. I will definitely be coming back when it's time for my retwist!!! read more

This lady is a rip off. I went to her to get some corn rows done (with extensions). I wanted them done with kinky hair. She charged me $80 for the hair ($40/bundle) and then $200 to do the corn rows. Who charges $200 to do some cornrows? Also, she did a horrible, horrible job with the cornrows. After I saw it, I was like, i could have done this myself. She also seemed surprise by how unimpressive her work looked. I don't like to argue and quarrel with hairdressers after they do my hair so I just let it go. I will never go back to her and I was sure to not recommend any of my friends. She's a nice person and all but I definitely feel that I got the raw end of the deal. As you can see from the price quoted above, she is very expensive. Please be sure to go somewhere else. read more

I decided to take my 10 year old daughter to see Shaquora at Sophisticated Loc's after being sold by her blog and Ad on Craigslist. Not only is she extremely friendly and hospitable but she has a vast knowledge on natural hair and techniques used. She made my daughter feel very comfortable and her hair came out absolutely stunning. My daughter also mention how therapeutic her herbal shampoo and conditioning felt as she was getting it done. Shaquora told me what to do in between visits and also provided me with a list of natural products to buy and mix to use on her hair. I am very satisfied that I chose Shaquora to take my daughter's hair through its natural locs journey and was even more please of the smile and boost she put on my daughter's face. SN: While I was in her salon, I notice some very Unique Craft Dolls on display on her walls and was shocked when I asked her about them, she told me she made them by hand. I have never seen dolls like those before, they are very TRUE feminine in nature as far as body type and poise, not to mention very afrocentric. Truly Captivating. read more

I've been going to Sophisticated Locs for the past two years. I love it there! Fajr and Shaquora are the best. I went because I decided to go from processed hair to natural hair. They helped me the whole way. I wouldn't trust my hair care to anyone else. All of the hair care products they use are all natural and made by Shaquora. I now take my daughter and we go every two weeks, faithfully. I love the atmosphere, the service, and I get good bang for my buck. It feels like family when I go. I appreciate the fact that I can feel at home, get good hair care and service and contribute to a black owned business. I would highly recommend Sophisticated Locs to any and everyone! read more

After wearing a hair weave for close to 32 years, I made the decision to give my hair a long overdue break, and go natural. I decided to commit to the beauty of Locs. Being temporarily limited in mobility (broken knee), I had to to find a local all natural hair salon that was easily accessible, based on my needs. In receipt of an advertisement flyer for Sophisticated Locs Natural Hair & Art Salon located in the Bedford Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, NY, I was able to get an appointment that very same day, as well as a discount special for beginner Locs. Upon arrival, I was greeted with attentive care and concern for my limited mobility. The loctician(s) were able to remove the weave I had in my hair for a reasonable fee in addition to the the cost of beginner Locs; All for a very reasonable price. In the process of having my hair done, Shaquora (loctician) explained the necessary steps taken in the process of locking the hair. I felt at ease with the whole process from begining to end. I, as well as my family, when seeing my hair, was very pleased with the results. I love my beginner Locs. They are short and sweet. And for a woman in her late fourty's, I have to say " Im bringing sexy back"! read more

Thanks to Shaquora for starting my locs which I have had for six years now! My hair was damaged and I was tired of the perms, weaves and wigs. I was referred to Shaquora by my cousin who at the time had locs and they were gorgeous. I initially was hesitant still about locking my hair so I would let her two-strand twist my hair. After a couple of months I decided that I was ready to transition into locs. She was my loctitian for a year or so and I received compliments on my hair continuously. If Shaquora was still in the city of Charlotte, I would still be going to her! She is educated, experienced, and masters her craft very well! I recommend Shaquora to anyone who wants to transition into natural hair styles or someone who is looking for a skilled loctitian! read more

I have had the privilege of being a client of Sophisticated Loc Salon since 2012. They are accommodating, caring and very professional. The service is of first rate quality and they will make sure to attend to your desired styles. In 5 years, I have not once visited another salon. That's because Fajr and Shaquora, as well as the rest of the staff, have provided enough professional excellence that I believe would be unmatched by other salons. read more

ECSTATIC!! After searching for a salon, I've finally found the ONE! Great customer service! Fajr was extra careful with my fine locs. She combined one, and it's totally undetectable! I've been going to Shaquora for 6-7 years now for afro kinky twist and she is definitely a great treasure. She is very personable and makes you feel comfortable, and she is very skilled in her craft. Whenever I get this style I know that compliments are soon to follow, along with questions about where did I get my hair done and who did it. She truly cares about client satisfaction, even touching base a few weeks after my appointment to see if I was still happy with my hair or if I had any questions. I am a client for life! read more

This place is fantastic the mother daughter team is excellent. The service is quick yet professional you will not be disappointed.

This past weekend I finally got my start into the loc world by getting extensions put in by Shaquora. It is an extensive process time wise but it's so worth it in the end. I wanted a mash-up of colors(natural brown, auburn and a burgundy) and a really cute do as it would be my look till my roots grew out. I loved it once it was done. I walked out of there feeling so free and beautiful. From her salon to the train station I was already getting compliments from both sexes. I valued the woman's more as they rarely give false compliments to other women. I couldn't wait to take a pic to send out to friends and family. I just knew this was exactly what I wanted. You know what I mean when you have a look in mind and the stylist does it right? I'll take some pics to put up for all of you to make your own decisions. But I'll just say the price was right, the service was good and if you're searching for a loctician give her a try. I was hesitant as I'd never been to her before and didn't want someone messing up my head but I was truly surprised that you can find amazing locticians online. All those who are wondering why this isn't 5 stared it's because I have nothing to compare it to as far as other locticians. I only know she did a wonderful job on my extensions and I'll be seeing her for all my loc care. read more

I am very happy to recommend this business to anyone who appreciates professional and tender care. I went for the Big Chop and met with Fajr for a consultation. I was made to feel relaxed and well taken care of. Her pricing was very reasonable. I greatly appreciated her honesty about the condition of my hair and the treatment it requires to become very healthy. I will be back to continue my natural hair journey. read more

Shaquora saved my locks!! I was in poor spirits about the way my lock extensions were falling apart. The natural hair was comming through and a lock actually fell off. Shaquora assured me that I was in the right hands and that she could save them. espesially such an expensive investment. She fixed all 80 of them!! and my locks are finally beautiful! (for a very reasonable fee). They are secure and sturdy that I can finally style my hair the way I always wanted. Shaquora was professional and imformative. She gave me quality service for the money I spent. I have a feeling that even if I did not spend alot of money she still would have provided a quality service... Thank god for Sophisticated loc's!!! I got dreadlock extensions put in here and they were terrible! First of all the technique she used could never be meant to be permanent ( and she told me they would be). After only a few weeks later I started to realize dreads were becoming weak and loosening and eventually falling out, it could be due to the fact that she took extremely kinky synthetic hair and sloppily attached it onto the ends of my hair which is not at all the same texture as the fake hair she put in. She did not even bother to look at the texture of my hair or ask me to first come in for a consultation like most places, instead she was money hungry and lied about having the skill of doing dreadlock extensions. Only after researching, and learning more about dreads, different salons, and dreadlocking extension techniques did i realize that she was not at all skilled in the department and i had been jipped. Therefore I contacted her via e-mail explaining to her what had happened to the dreads and I never recieved a reply which I see as very unprofessional and a clear sign of "say whatever and then take the money and run". Most hairdressers would tell a customer to come back in, I never told her i wanted her to fix it for free I just wanted her to fix it and she could not even do that.Thank God i was able to cut off the mess she put onto my hair and manicure and twist my own hair but because of her lack of skill and the months I had tried to hold on to the style she put it some of my hair had dreaded and some of it was still silky, curly. Either way the point is clear DO NOT GO TO THIS LADY TO HAVE YOUR DREADS REPAIRED OR EXTENSIONS ADDED! She doesn't know what she is doing in that department, she may know how to touch up dreads already started or do some braids but she doesnt know how to do the extensions technique and she should just say that instead of lying and charging people the same high price as other salons that do it properly and permanently, that's just selfish, outrageous, and thievery. read more

Has a broke college student living in New York starting a natural journey might prove to be hard. I used to retwist my hair myself but it got to the point that I needed professional help. I called around different loc salons in all five boroughs but all their prices were not in line with what was in my wallet. Then I came across Sophiscated Loc's Salon. I spoke to shaquora who was warm and understanding of my situation. She told me that if i washed my hair myself all I would have to pay is $65 for a retwist. This was definitely an offer I could not pass up. About a 10 min walk from the A train (if you walk slowly like me) the shop was easy to find. Shaquora and her family were very welcoming and friendly which made me feel right at home and comfortable. I was also very impressed by the fact that they make their own products and it smells awesome! Long story short, i left their salon feeling refreshed and good. They have become my go to loctican. I have already told several of my friends that have locs to visit and I highly recommend that you come too! read more
