I had a phenomenal experience ordering a custom cake from Sophisticakes this past weekend. I went in a week prior to get a quote. I can't remember who helped me but she was so friendly and helpful. She asked me what I had in mind for my friend's bridal shower cake, showed me pictures of cakes they'd done before, and figured out a solution for my budget and number of guests. All this took only about 10 minutes. They're very flexible with opening early if you need the cake before opening hours, and the whole process was totally seamless. The cake was exactly what I was hoping it would be. I chose the chocolate chip pound cake with buttercream icing, and the guests were thrilled with it. Everyone kept asking where it came from and couldn't believe it was my neighborhood bakery. Several guests were literally smiling as they savored every bite, and several also went back for seconds. Many wanted to take home a leftover piece for someone at home to try. Everyone agreed the cake was an absolute highlight of the party. Basically, there was nothing but rave reviews. This cake only cost us $80, and it was estimated to serve 24. We had 22 at our party, and there was plenty leftover, so I guess we cut the slices a little smaller. We got a birthday cake here for my girlfriends fathers birthday. It was a chocolate chip pound cake with buttercream icing. We also tried their red velvet cupcakes. The cupcakes were good, but I have had better. The icing was a little too sweet for my taste and the cake itself was dry. The birthday cake was better. I was surprised that the chocolate chips were not baked into the batter of the cake itself, but we're placed in the icing layer between the cakes. The icing was not quite as sweet as the cupcake, and hate a good taste. I will go back and give them another shot. read more

I guess I will be the first post of 2013. Let me start by saying I have heard so much about Sophisticake's. My boss kept raving about their cupcakes and cakes. Even while visiting the doctor's office I heard people raving about Sophisticakes. Finally, I decided to give them a try and I loved it! For the first time in my life I have found a place that does not overload icing with sugar. Instead of feeling like I had an IV full of sugar, I enjoyed a pleasant and moist treat. I had the buttercream icing cupcake. I like to keep things simple and plan. Normally I stay away from sweets because I end up with headaches and migraines. You know how people say "you get what you pay for"? This is SO the case with SophistiCakes Bakery. I have used them for most of our family celebrations and my friends and family are totally HOOKED. Yes, the prices for their made-from-scratch cakes and cupcakes are higher than if you went to your local grocery store but consider the difference in what you are getting and GIVING your guests. My kids all have a different "most favorite"....my oldest loves the cupcakes, my middle can't get enough of the fudge brownies and my little guy goes nuts for the peanut butter cup chocolate chip cookie. We are always greeted with a friendly hello and treated like we are part of the family. The counter help has always worked with me to find the perfect cake no matter the occasion...birthdays, showers, funeral gatherings, Sunday dinner dessert or a "just because" treat for my kids. WEDDING CAKE REVIEW Kathy Pawlickilies lies and steals from her clients - do not use Sophisticakes for your wedding or any other cake. She talks out of both sides of her mouth and takes advantage of the wedding cake industry by being sneaky and trying to up-charge. Prior to knowing this, my fiance and I wanted to order our cake from Sophisticakes to support a local Delco business. I have bought multiple cakes from Sophisticakes in the past, and I thought they ran a pretty clean business. The cake tasting stipulations for Sophisticakes clearly stated this, "A tasting and consultation is $35. This fee includes a tasting of up to 5 flavors (in cupcake form) and up to 1 hour with our wedding consultant. If you book your wedding cake with us, the consultation fee will be deducted from your total balance." This statement was visible on brochures and the website, was stated via email exchange between Kathy and me, and again verbally expressed at the tasting. My fiance, his parents, and I went ahead with the tasting. We were uncertain if we wanted a two tier or one tier cake. We expressed this to Kathy prior to the tasting and she said no worries; she was flexible with whatever we decided. At the tasting, we expressed that we may only want a small 6-inch wedding cake, which would cost around $40. We specifically asked Kathy if she would take the $35 off if we decided to go with a smaller $40 cake. Kathy said she would honor the deduction of the $35. She specifically said, "If that's what you want, then sure!" We told Kathy we would call back closer to the wedding to book our cake and thanked her for her service. About seven weeks later, I called Kathy and told her we'd like to put the order in for the basic 6'' double cake with raspberry filling and plain buttercream icing. No extra design just basic. Kathy said that the cake would cost $47.99. I told her, "Great, let's put the order in, and please be sure to deduct the $35 from the cake tasting fee, since we decided to book with you and that was discussed at the tasting." Kathy quickly laughed at me and said, "Oh no, you don't get that $35 deduction. That deduction is only good for wedding cakes that are $300+. I thought you guys were kidding at the tasting about getting a $35 discount on a $50 cake." I told her that was never clearly stated in any of the brochures, website, emails, or even mentioned at the cake tasting. Kathy said, "I assumed that you, your fiance, and his parents knew that I was joking about deducting the $35 - I need to make money so it is only for $300+ cakes." Kathy knowingly kept this $300 minimum rule from us or created this requirement once she found out that my fiance and I did not wants an extravagant cake $300+ cake. After confronting Kathy about her lack of communication about this $300 minimum, she lied and said it was in her brochures and on her website, and it clearly was not. Later the same day, I had a friend visit the store to confront Kathy. She asked Kathy to pull her website up to double checked this tasting $300+ requirement (she knew there was no $300 minimum mentioned on it). Kathy lied and said "the internet wasn't working" and refused to pull the website up in front of her. After leaving the store, Kathy sneakily changed the website to cover her tracks and added a $300+ minimum statement. Kathy is a greedy snake who lies. Kathy is running a slimy business where she takes advantage of brides and their families. She talks in circles to gauge how much a customer is willing to spend so she can upcharge and take advantage of her clients. Kathy's deceitfulness is insulting as a bride who is planning a wedding on a budget. As a business owner, she owes it to her customers to be upfront and honest with her services AND if she screws up she should hold herself accountable - not lie her way around it. Bottomline, if we knew up-front that we needed to order a cake that was at least $300+ to get the $35 waived, then we would have never done a tasting to begin with. If we knew Kathy was so unprofessional we would have also never gone to Sophisticakes. I hope the $35 was worth the loss of a loyal customer. read more

We were planning to order a cake for my parents' 50th anniversary party, based on the wonderful cake they made for my son's graduation last year. However, when we went to inquire, the woman working was so disinterested and so very UNhelpful, we changed our plans. I would suggest that they show some interest in customer service instead of simply directing people to their website (in the form of a desktop plopped in the corner of their storefront). My mother (who is over 70 years old) found this especially offensive. In addition, the underage staff behind the counter had a lot of trouble controlling their foul language in front of the customers up front. This is one of those places where everything generally looks better than it tastes. They do create cakes that are beautiful to look at. However I have found their cupcakes and cakes to generally be dried out, not moist, as if they have been sitting around for several days. I purchased a baby shower cake here just before Christmas. The staff were very helpful, guiding me to the right-sized cake for the number of people we were expecting. I selected one of the designs from their website. On the day of the shower I was able to pick up the cake early on a Sunday morning without any trouble.
