Amazing bakery! We ordered several items for a baptism and were completely blown away by both the quality and flavor. The lemon raspberry cake was outstanding--the lemon tasted bright and authentic, not artificial or overpowering, and paired beautifully with the tart sweetness of raspberry. I received this incredibly beautiful cake as a gift from my neighbor. I've never tried Clay's before, so I was super excited to try this local bakery for my birthday. First off, the cake design is exquisite. Once we dug into the cake, I really like the layers of the cake and the icing. The ratio was just right. I have been eating clays cakes for years and they are always fantastic! Never dry and the icing is perfect buttercream of not too sweet. I usually do homemade cakes for birthdays but my husband's 50th was outside my decorating abilities. It's tasteless, dry (tastes old, stale) and the buttercream icing has no taste, just sickening sweet. I used to get cakes from here many years ago and the poundcake was the best. When it comes to custom cakes, the fondant cakes are soft so when you cut into the cake, the fondant does not crush the cake. Oh, and the buttercreams are to die for. Clay's went above and beyond creating the most perfect birthday cake for 30 people for a surprise 80th birthday party. The person I spoke to on the phone listened to my request, and provided some great suggestions and then worked with me to find the perfect cake. On the day I picked up the cake someone from Clay's walked me to my car and stowed it properly so that it made 20 minutes back home intact!! In addition, I snapped up some cookies and some cupcakes while I was there and I can tell you every single one of the items that I tasted from Clay's gets an A+, a 100% satisfaction and five stars! Clays Baker is awesome, everyone there is amazing, warm and friendly. I noticed the beautiful cake on their website just a few days ago and decided to get it for my moms birthday today March 27th. The cake is elegant and gorgeous in person the pictures can't say enough. We cut the cake last night, my mom just wanted a simple fluffy cake.. OMG the icing and cake are amazing the cake is fluffy and moist yellow cake. The taste is something unique that I can't quite name it, it's not your normal yellow cake it's beyond that, simply delicious. The icing so smooth and creamy it doesn't get hard or dry as if it has sat out all day. My mom was in tears about the look and taste of this cake. I was expecting this place to be overpriced and full of trendy Food Network style confections, you know, flash in the pan but totally lacking in decent flavor. Even still, I read the reviews and thought it was a bunch of ML bourgeois, consuming all that looks good and is overpriced. But I was totally totally wrong. I called ahead on a Friday afternoon. There was so much noise in the background, it sounded like a birthday party was in effect. They were clearly really busy, but the kind woman who answered was helpful and patient, looking to see if they had the yellow cake with chocolate frosting that I wanted, ready-made, and completely last-minute. Awesomely, they had one, and had it ready for me in 10mins. AMAZING! It was about 8" for under $16, which was a lot cheaper than I expected for a location right on 30. When I went in to pick up, everyone was hard at work, but very welcoming and friendly at the same time. And they all seemed really down-to-earth, especially for the high-end look of all their creations. Still a skeptic, I was afraid that the tony look of the cakes would mean it was all show and no yum, but we were extremely impressed with the texture and flavor. Moist, extremely fresh, plenty of icing, and good quality icing that doesn't taste canned or give that saccharine aftertaste. The chocolate icing tastes like fudge. It is so good it could stand alone as its own dessert; punch shapes into it and box it up for V-day, seriously. Really, really good cake! I asked if they had a signature specialty, and was directed to the chocolate chip pound cake. This is not only pound cake, not only pound cake with chocolate chips, but chocolate chip-filled pound cake with icing all over it too. DECADENT and delicious! They also had a raspberry swirl pound cake, also iced, and that one was actually my favorite. Extremely tasty, and a very clever take on pound cake. Who knew? Pound cake with oomph tastes like some amazing gourmet masterpiece. The shop is in an old building right on route 30, across the street from the Berwyn Septa train station. It is kind of like an old fashioned ice cream parlor, meets Vermont coffee shop on the inside. All the employees wear tie-dye tees, which is cute, but again, very down-to-earth for the prissy-chic caliber of stuff they are capable of making. Amazing place! I have lived a couple miles from this place for almost 12 years now, so I am really bummed I did not try them until now, but hey, at least I finally did. Will be back a LOT!!!!!! :-) Also, Clay's gives out little logo freebies, like pens and old school matchbooks, all in bright psycadellic colors. read more

This is my favorite bakery. I was introduced to this bakery bake in 2008 when I worked in the area. Once I left the company I missed going to this bakery. So, I had an excuse to go back for my moms retirement party. The staff did not disappoint me in taste it brought back so many memories:-) the only reason I couldn't give this review 5 stars is because the cake had a Sherrif's badge instead of a Philadelphia Police badge. My husband and I stopped by Clay's today after having an ultrasound to find out the gender of our baby. We wanted to get two cupcakes but hadn't placed an order in advance. The parking lot was busy and the staff was in and out delivering curbside orders. Cakes are REALLY pretty, the designs are exceptional BUT the one I choose, which I think was butter pound. didn't taste great, at all! I feel bad saying that because the people who work there are delightful and the bakery itself is charming, like stepping back in time. But the cake I bought must have been previously frozen because it was absolutely void of flavor and super dry. We tossed it after one bite each. Here's the good news. The cake was supposed to be the dessert for a dinner party that got cancelled. Thank God, I would have been mortified! I recently visited Clay's to see if they could help me with a dilemma- I have double the children celebrating a birthday (twins), but do not need double the cake...but each kid wants their own (they are individuals after all). I won't lie, the young lady helping me seemed quite confused by this, but we worked through it. I pointed out a cake in the refrigerator and said that would probably work from a size/serving standpoint- it was a single layer round, probably 7-9". I ordered one chocolate Captain America cake and one vanilla Frozen cake. Both were beautifully decorated and delicious - I'm normally a chocolate person, but the vanilla...wow, it was amazing. But, my cakes were double layer! Much more cake than I needed or anticipated. I'm not sure where the miscommunication was, but the taste made up for it (although in hindsight one has to wonder about any added cost...). When push comes to shove, cakes from Clay are gorgeous and sure to please even the pickiest cake eater. Or someone who doesn't even like cake! I'm so glad we used them for our twin's cake and will likely do so again and again - pick up was easy, the price was fair, and everything else was on point! read more

I work close to Clay's and a lot of people in the office get their family party cakes here and bring the leftovers into work. I have to say they are somewhere on the scale of "ok " to "very good" taste-wise. It's weird some cakes from there I have eaten seem like a box cake mix and others are a higher quality. Where they really excel is their decorating!! They certainly live up to their "creative" name as far as the imagination goes. We wanted a cake for two people having a birthday at once - one loved superheroes, one loved cats - so we asked for a superhero cat cake and they drew one on a cake that turned out well. Just walking into the bakery my jaw hit they floor, they have lots and lots of beautifully decorated cakes in all kinds of styles and colors, and they are ready to buy. The style sort of looks like how they decorate fondant cakes but its butter cream icing. They also have all kinds of cupcakes, cookies and donuts that looked good. So while their cake tastes fine, it's really their beautiful decorations that would inspire me to purchase a cake here. read more

We had heart shaped cookies with the bride and groom's initials as dessert for the party and then provided bagged beer bottle shaped cookies (that Clay's bagged for us!) as favors. The cookies were delicious. I grew up in Berwyn, so Clay's has always been a part of my life, but our guests who were from out of town, this was their first Clay's experience. They were blown away! Chocolate chip pound cake. All you need to know. But actually the cakes are always beautifully designed AND yummy. I love that it's a small business and everyone is so "sweet". I've gotten my cakes here for a while. This past winter I also got their gingerbread house kit, which was the coolest house I've ever made. You can always stop in for a cupcake, cookie, or pretzel. I am not sure if my edit of this posting will erase what I have already posted or not. Basically I will sum up then say what I set out to say. Last year for my birthday I called Clay's Creative Corner Bakery and ordered two cakes for my birthday. One was a pound cake and the other was a cake with chocolate chips in it. The person who took the order told me it was a favorite of their customers. Why two cakes? I LOVE CAKE. If the cakes were good I wanted to be sure to have leftovers as I have had good cakes completey attacked and eaten entirely by my family and friends. If there's any left they beg to take slices home to family members. I digress... Upon eating the cake I and my guests all felt that both cakes were extremely dry. We thought the buttercream was pretty horrible. The decorations were over the top both colorwise and volume. We regularly review food at our house. I guess we are food snobs. We don't mean to be, honest! Clay's cakes weren't cheap. They were actually more than I had been paying at Aux Petit in Wayne, where I usually beg someone to order my cake from. I sent all the leftover cake home with non-family members (who wanted no part of it). After reading my review Brian M. shot me an email suggesting that I send a personal email to Clay's describing my disappointment with the cakes we bought there. Brian said that he would hate to see this very sucessful business go down the tubes. It was a great idea and I did so immediately. Yesterday I got a very thoughtful reply from one of the owners at Clay's. What she said hit home pretty hard, namely that I should have contacted the bakery and told them about my bad cake experience before writing a bad review. In other words I should give them the benefit of the doubt and allowed them to make good. So true! I own a small little baking business myself. We bake for three local farmers' markets and also sell in two retail stores. I know what she said was 100% true. Shame on me! I would hope that any of our customers would also let me know when our products were not up to snuff. You may ask why I don't make my own birthday cakes? LOL! Well this year I did, but not on purpose. My kids tricked me into doing it for a surprise birthday party they threw me! My cakes are always from from Aux Petit. It is no fun making your own birthday cake. Clay's asked me to please try them again, mention my email when I ordered, and assured me that they would bend over backwards for me. This was a very nice thing to say. They told me they used pure butter and real vanilla in their buttercream, even when butter was horribly expensive. I had questioned their use of 100% real butter in their icing. It tasted smeary on the roof of my mouth, just like hydrogenated shortening, in fact. If they say they don't use it I have to believe them. The owner also said that the business was a family business and that everything was made by family members. On that note I wil say this: My business is also a family business. My kids have made and still do make mistakes. So do I. The fact that it is a family business doesn't really mean a whole lot. Bakers are human beings who make mistakes & cut corners when they are busy. It makes no difference whether a worker is a family member. Anyone can make a bad judgement call. Clay's email brought to mind an email I received from one of my customers last fall who wrote to me regarding a blueberry pie that was runny. I told her to please let me make her another blueberry pie, (or anything within that price range), in order to make good on the order. I also offered a full refund. We would rather keep a customer then give money back and send them on their way to another baker. I am a bit ashamed that I did not "Do unto others as I would have them do unto me." My mother taught me better than that! (Sorry Mom -do they have computers in heaven?) Here is what I have decided to do: I AM going to order another cake from Clay's using my real name. I will refer to my email as requested. I will also order one incognito. Cakes should be good whether they are from a disgruntled customer or not, correct? I will invite some friends over for dessert. I am not sure if we will do this in one or two episodes. We will eat samples from both cakes, review and discuss how we feel about the cakes, and post pictures of the cakes. I will inform Clay's of my findings and then I will report our findings to you. I will keep you posted. Here's hoping that Clay's comes through for all of us as I like having options for my birthday cake so I don't have to make my own! read more

OMG. I recently turned a year older (bummer) and was surprised with a birthday cake from Clay's. The decoration was a bit too much-but maybe that was what was requested. However the cake itself was about the driest I'd ever had. I mean downright dusty. The butter creme icing was pretty poor too.I felt so bad for the person who'd ordered it. Everyone who tired it had a hard time getting any of it down. Wow! It was really bad cake! I felt really horrible when I found out they were charged $50 for an average sized birthday cake that was almost inedible! I just read Lori P.'s recent review and could not agree more. I got a couple of birthday cakes earlier this year from Aux Petits Delices and they were great! While they tend to do less custom decoration, their decorations are generally more tasteful and the cakes were delicious. And at $35 each, a bargain compared to Clay's! I was surprised that Clay's delivered such a bad cake to be honest. I hope they figure out what is going wrong and make improvements-this bakery has a long-standing reputation in this area. Their decoration skills are phenomenal. I give them 5 stars for visual appeal, as they make some gorgeous cakes! Unfortunately, I am never impressed with the taste -- bland and borderline dry, every time. I've tried their cakes on about a half dozen occasions (birthday parties, showers, etc.), and am consistently wowed by the look then disappointed when I eat it.
