Walking in at prime time for breakfast on a Sunday morning, I was pleased with the quick greeting and seating. My cup of hot coffee arrived quickly in a Sophia's mug as I looked over the menu. I ordered the Veggie Omelette substituting one large Blueberry Pancake for the toast and hash browns. I love restaurants that allow substitutions recognizing that so many these days struggle to accommodate a customer's whims. That's never an issue here at Sophia's. The most significant factor that influenced my star rating was the superb quality of the omelette. The egg was uniquely thin...like the thickness of a quarter. This thin egg wrapping was chuck full of a nice variety of perfectly sautéed veggies including 'shrooms, onions, tomatoes, green peppers and American cheese. Standard issue American fare. We stopped in for a quick bite after finishing up an appointment with a financial planner in the area when we realized just how famished we really were. In the spirit of fiscal responsibility (you know, since we had just left the financial adviser's office), we opted for a budget-friendly meal. I've had breakfast here twice before, but not recently, and noticed that not much had changed- from the decor and menu to the service and the food quality. To be honest, it looked exactly the same. Time has changed little, if anything at all, at Sophia's Kitchen. Whether that's a good or a bad thing is open to interpretation. First things first. After we slid into our booth, my husband and I looked around and noticed that we were easily the youngest people in the joint- and I mean the youngest by probably three decades. What the heck, did we hit the early bird special or something? I didn't think so, but we were sort of between lunch and dinner, so I guess that was to blame. The atmosphere was pretty staid and bland, but the service was friendly and courteous. Personally, I think a makeover is in need, but that's just my opinion. It looked like the kind of place my grandmother would have loved. I ordered a tuna melt with American fries, while my hubby picked a tried and true old favorite that he hadn't ordered anywhere in years- a club sandwich with homemade kettle chips. To be fair, the food wasn't the most interesting in the world, but it was solid. While the meal itself wouldn't have set the world on fire, it tasted good and came out of the kitchen within a reasonable period of time. My tuna melt was stacked with a generous serving of albacore on some homemade bread. My fries could have been crisper. At the same time, my husband's sandwich was a typical club made with several layers of meat, cheeses, and veggies, made the way one would expect. He said he was neither overly impressed nor disappointed, so make of that what you will. I tried some of his homemade kettle chips. They were delicious. I see why our waitress recommended them! Those kettle chips are something to come back for. I wish I had ordered those instead. Sigh. Honestly, I don't think the prices have changed all that much over the years. It made for a frugal late lunch. There's nothing wrong with being fiscally responsible. I think we easily paid under $20 for the two of us, including tip. Would I come back again? Maybe, if I was in the area and didn't want to waste too much money on anything fancy. Overall, a solid, fairly unremarkable dining experience. The place is very cute as the windows are lovely to look out but we went in for breakfast about 10:30 after voting and ended up being there for an hour and a half. We got seated quickly but didn't get anyone to take our drink order for almost 20 minutes then another wait to get the food order. My husbands coffee only got refilled once in all that time. They were not very busy either so I absolutely will not give a good rating based on service. My steak skillet was very good as was my niece's veggie omelet but my husband got the eggs and hash that was the same price as the omelet. He got two eggs and corned beef hash out of a can. Definitely not with the almost $9 price for that. He also ordered a coney one the side and the coney sauce tasted like the meat was bad. While I find coneys disgusting all the time, he eats them everywhere and is somewhat of a coney conissosour so when he takes a single bite and can't eat anymore because it is disgusting, you know it is terrible. read more

Holy hell. I have never had a dining experience this bad. There is nothing that would have been worse about this 'restaurant' unless someone got food poisoning and the verdict is still out on that. Biscuits and gravy disgusting water and flour tasting. Fish and chips literally dripping grease. Slowest service ever. Short tempered wait staff. When trying to pay one of my co-diners picked up a pen to sign the receipt and the check out lady snapped extremely loudly 'You can't sign that yet I'm not done you're allowed to sign it when I'm done' .....I'm not even going to say what I thought after that. Oh and cherry on top the bathrooms were disgusting and all the soap dispensers were out of soap. So my question is how are the servers washing their hands after the bathroom? Lol. I love me some Sophias. Its a comfy family restaurant that has really nice customer service. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner that is not expensively priced. The food is really good! Personally I think their fries are the best, no matter what I ordered I had to get a side of fries and Ranch. Oh yea and the ranch is so good too! Another favorite of mine is their grilled cheese which is made with 3 cheeses that is nothing but a melty goodness of yum! This place flat out sucks. This is the second time the staff has made me feel like they're pissed they have guests. It took forever for any acknowledgement we were even there, then another lifetime to be seated. I saw a waitress behind the counter texting on her phone for quite sometime, told my wife " bet she's ours", sure enough, drinks took forever. Great food can overcome bad service at times, but that's not possible here. I won't waste time reviewing the food because it doesn't matter, avoid at all costs. Not impressed. It was 8am on a weekday, less than 1/4 of the tables were filled, and we were hoping to get in and out at typical diner speeds. Service was slow, getting the food was slow, getting the bill was slow. And let's talk about that food. My eggs were cooked perfectly, which was good because they ended up being the only edible thing on my plate. The hash browns tasted raw and rancid, which is a bad combo. The bacon was cold and reminiscent of shoe leather. Prices were fine for diner food, but McDonalds would have tasted better. My dining partner was warned by the guys he works with not to get the coffee, or the tuna melt, or this or that... and the menu isn't that big to begin with. Very good breakfast, but BEWARE! The owner, Gus, tells his waitresses to add an extra charge to the bill if you use more condiments like jelly, than he sees fit! Instead of flat out itemizing extra charges, or noting this on the menu, he has them add it in to the price of the food item so you might not catch it! I did! I took photos 3 different occasions of the bill for the same 2 meals. Each bill was different. I brought it to his attention and he said we had more than 6 jellies between us. Now he didn't see us eat all 3 occasions, so his waitresses must report back. I wanted a refund, warned people there of his practice, and was told to NEVER come back again!! Don't worry, Gus!
