Leaving a 5 star review based on the food alone. I don't want to ding the restaurant chef and owners for the server experience. My husband got the Colorado burrito and the pork was amazing!!! I had the taco salad, yum!! The homemade dressing was amazing! The server seemed overwhelmed as it took her 23 minutes to greet our table and get our drink order. Our order of table aide guac was not tableside and came out within minutes of our food. In fact, I noticed our food ready on the hot hold area as we got our guac. Other than a poor service experience, the food was amazing! read more

Sonora grill has a lot great options for people preferring to eat vegan or vegetarian. The service is always great, but the prices are a little high for what you get. Be sure to get on the waitlist early or make a reservation if you're going on the weekends. Be prepared to walk a little bit because parking is limited up and down the street. read more

What a GREAT place to "happen" into...Being from San Diego I'm always cautious about what "Mexican food" is in non- border towns. THESE GUYS GOT IT!! Taquitos, Salsas (yes spicy one) and guacamole dip are first rate. Really clever use of taco-shell tortilla chips. Taquitos are AWESOME! Sort of a Flauta/rolled tacos with a wonderful enchilada sauce. Chicken fajitas were a bit small for proportion but flavors were spot on. The locals must be THRILLED to have quality "non drive through" Mexican food.. Margheritas are a little different but VERY good!! Don't pass up this place, locals and tourists alike.... Mucho Sabor!!! read more

Sonora Grill - Taquitos and marg... - Mexican Near Me - Ogden, Utah

The worst restaurant that I've dined at in Utah. Service was slow (especially during COVID), food wasn't hot, and the business owner accused me of making "false claims" when we had gotten ill from eating their food. Lastly, they don't know how to make camarones a la diabla. They threw a bunch of Serrano pieces all over my plate. This place is VERY Americanized (not authentic). I highly suggest eating elsewhere if you want good quality Mexican food and good service. read more

Great food and good service! Love that it is right in downtown Ogden and close to all the action.

Great food! Very fast service! Amazing staff!! I will definitely go again, and recommended to others!

We were there on a Saturday night. A little over an hour's wait - about what we expected. Very nice decor inside. Waiter was very attentive. Food looked fantastic when it came out. However, the taste was very disappointing. I had the chile rellenos. Heavily battered and the batter was heavy with oil. I could only eat half of one before my stomach was turning. Lacked flavor - very bland. The other three with me all had different pork dishes. Each said that the carnitas was dry and difficult to chew. We possibly just caught them on a bad night. We had heard great things about the restaurant. read more

Great food, great prices. I love eating here. They have excellent vegetarian options and are reasonably priced. We have always been treated well by that staff. Highly recommend Sonora Grill. read more

On that rare occasion when you are so pleasantly surprised by a gustatory experience that you think it is unprecedented ever or at least, for a very long time, it is fun to reflect on the last such a rare time. Such was my experience at Sonora Grill today for lunch. I am a big fan of Chili Verde in general, but Sonora Grill's Chili Verde tops them all. What marvelous complex and balanced tastes displayed in this dish. The large piece of braised pork was fork break-apart tender, moist, and flavorful. The star however was the dark green sauce. It was simply to die for. After speaking to the kitchen manager, I can appreciate the process of making this superb dish. Not only is their method of cooking the pork unique and involving a 5-hour oven journey, the top secret, as it always seems to be, is in the array of some two dozen herbs and spices used in the sauce. I wish I could duplicate this dish at home, but before that ever happens, I will come back to my new go-to Mexican restaurant. I cannot give a higher recommendation than my best ever Mexican food experience ( and that includes many restaurants throughout Mexico). read more

The food here used to be delicious. However, they recently changed their menu, and the results are tragic. What was once a great restaurant is no more. The cherry on top is that they now nickel and dime you for everything (besides getting charged for chips and salsa, we had to pay extra to get beans and rice with our already small enchiladas). We used to be regulars. We will not be going again. read more

Food is amazing! Best Mexican food in the state along with their margaritas. Just wish it was closer to my home

Nothing says "Happy Valentine's Day" like GREAT mexican food!!! The wife and I checked the kids in with a babysitter and enjoyed a dinner / movie date that started at Sonora. It's become a bit of a tradition for us. I ordered the special, a great thick-cut pork chop charbroiled and coated in a nice, spicy sauce and served over a creative bed of tortilla chips and salsa. The chop was cooked perfectly and my wife (who hates pork) battled for bites all night long. It was served with the best ear of corn I have ever had, flame-cooked and covered with sour cream, cotija cheese, and chili powder. The wait staff was extremely attentive (always), extremely cordial (always), and made great recommendations on the menu. They take pride in their menu and are always able to give great suggestions. The Chefs make the wait staff try all of the items which lends to great customer service. The rose service was a nice touch for the holiday, too. Steve definitely has a fan here. We will always call Sonora "our place" since we have been going since day 1. The food has consistently been great and the service outstanding. read more

This is one of my favorite local Ogden places. It seems to be a love or hate type of place for people, but I'm definitely on the love side. The most amazing thing they offer is arroz con pollo which isn't currently on the menu (it should be!!) but they'll still make it for you. Rice, chicken, bell peppers in a creamy red sauce.... Mmmm delicious! They bring you tortillas to make little burrito/tacos out of it but I just like to eat it plain. Chips and salsa are to die for. The table-side guacamole is no longer made table-side unless you request it specifically, but it's still tasty. I really enjoy the flautas and the chicken tostada salad as well. The dock of a star is just because sometimes they aren't consistent. And sometimes the service is lacking. But generally they are great!! Don't forget to sign up for their emails so you can get a free birthday entree. They also have special deals occasionally like the 12 days of Christmas (a new tasty deal everyday!) or special community events. read more

New menu, new chef, don't bother. Had the Christmas special of poblano pepper. Last year couldn't wait to have more. It was beyond delicious. This year bland and forgettable. My critique is for food not service. Excellent service. Waiter received an extra large tip for working on Christmas eve. read more

We decided to try Sonora Grill again after a couple of sub-par experiences in the past. We arrived at 5:45 pm. There were only a few other tables occupied. We were seated promptly. That was the last contact we had with any restaurant staff. Waited 15 minutes. Were not even served water. A table seated about 5 minutes later was visited almost immediately by a server, who did not even bother to acknowledge our presence. At that point we gave up and left. read more

I have eaten here a few times and used to know the owner before he sold out. I have tried several items and nothing has really wow'd me. My latest visit included a combo plate of Cochinita Pibil, Chicken Flauta and Chicken Cabbage Salad. Of the three items, the Chicken Flauta was the best. Very tasty. The Pibil was a little too much of one thing in the serving, and the cabbage salad was very bland. I always like the unique large chips and the red and green salsa, with the green salsa being the best. There is a nice atmosphere in here and the staff is always friendly. They have a full bar as well. read more

Wow. Just WOW! The carne asada plate was amazing. Perfect steak and the coconut rice is life-changing. Every element works from the pickled onion to the black beans to the delicious tortilla. Service was top notch even though I showed up in my work vest and boots. I felt bad about my attire, it's a classy joint. This is simply not to be missed. I can't wait to be in Ogden again. read more

I changed my review to a one star. The owner tells the staff to steal from the people that keep him in business. How can the owner be so lazy that he can't have change avail for his patrons? Instead he advises his staff to steal the change. Also, Check your credit card receipts people!! I would hate to see padding of the bill. There is no hand washing. I watched the wait staff playing with the tortillas. Poor leadership from this owner. read more

Best meal I had in Salt Lake City. Was a little slow to be waited on but they were busy. The server did a great job. Red sauce chicken burrito was delicious read more

Great stuff. Different than traditional but tastes really good. Highly recommend. Yum

Sonora Grill is a great place for lunch or dinner in a semi-upscale setting. Service is excellent and you never need to wait for a drink refill or a new beer. While you wait for your entree they bring out a sampler of salsas and rather than chips, you get whole crispy tortillas to break up to your hearts delight. Be sure to ask for their extra hot habanero salsa if you like the heat! Great food and drinks. Be sure to order the table side guacamole if that's your thing! read more

great atmosphere, incredible food, but the service made our night. Our server, Conner, was amazing. attentive, knew the menu well, had a great attitude and was very helpful! We aren't from Utah and highly recommend to travelers or to anyone looking for good food! Great experience! read more

All I can say is you have to give this place a shot if you are in the area. we are from southern California and this was one of the best Mexican food Mills we've had in a very long time. The waiter recommended a chili relleno with shrimp. I was hesitant but since he said it was their house special I told myself one in Rome because I normally never order a chili relleno. Oh my God this was one of the best Mexican dishes I've ever had in my life. the chili relleno had such amazing taste and the texture of the chili was just surprising. Combined with the delicate contrast of sauce and the added value of the abundant amount of shrimp. This dish is a total Grand slam. If you like food with a little bit of heat don't hesitate to ask for a habanero sauce which is amazing. Thanks for a great meal. read more

Good food, cool to see the train go by. Really like the old building. Service was ok, nothing to write home about.

This is hands down our family's favorite place to eat when we're passing through Ogden, we make resi's as soon as we know what time we'll be going through. The service is awesome the ambience is perfect and the food is excellent read more

Really enjoyed our dinner at Sonora. More interior Mexican and not the typical Combo #3 taco/enchilada/burrito spots. Nicely decorated with a well curated menu. Excellent service and information from Dallion and the entire staff was on point. Try the carnitas, super flavorful. The salsas are out of site. read more

Drinks were good and ok value. Service was good. I am not a fan of Mexican restaurants that charge for chips and salsa. And to top it off the chips are some of the worst I have had. Salsas were good. Entrees were good. Careful with some they charge extra for rice and beans. $5! Probably would not return. read more

Their not accepting the yelp coupon was only the first in a long lines of disappointment here. Their only saving grace was our waiter. He was attentive, friendly, helpful, and just seemed like a great guy, it's too bad that the food didn't match their staff's quality. The food looked amazing when it came out. The presentation was extremely well done and it had my mouth watering. Unfortunately, my tastebuds disagreed with what my eyes were telling them. It just lacked flavor. I ordered a combination of several different things, as did my fiancee. And though they looked great, the taste was very lack-luster. I was sorely disappointed, especially since it looked tasty. It was edible, and I did eat it, but only because I was hungry. I've had better Mexican at Taco Bell (and I don't like Taco Bell, but at least they season their food). I'm unsure what to say other than that. Frankly, I was shocked at the lack of flavor. It wasn't that it tasted badly... it's just that I can boil chicken at home and wrap it in a tortilla with approximately the same results. read more

Well today was our second time visiting and this time was an ok visit could have been better. We started off with a iPhone reservation because last time we went it was a very long wait time. We arrived check in 10 minutes before our 5:30 reservation and we're immediately seated. We were welcome with chips and salsa and waters for a party of 5. Here's where it got interesting I asked our waitress Renee I have a 50% coupon from yelp and I would like to apply it to an appetizer the guacamole she said "no problem now that you showed it to me I will take it off at the end on your check" food comes out and it was amazing as always this time I mixed it up and got pozole which was delicious and was only $5 for a huge bowl. All in all service and food was good just missing that one star because she didn't take off the %50 so I ended up paying $10.95 for the guacamole which was only worth about $4-$5 the avocados seemed black you know it tastes when it's not good that how ours was which is why it was still almost full. Wife's food my food and daughters was all good. I understand she was busy waiting a lot of tables and I appreciate it and I still tipped her nicely despite her keeping her word that it would be removed. So I ended up paying full price plus tip read more

I absolutely love their Conchinita Pibil. I have made it at home and it just isn't the same. The first time I ever tried it was from Sonora Grill many years ago. They have changed their recipe or how they cook it because the meat is dryer than it used to be. I still love it though. I look for other restaurants that have it, but it is hard to find. Worth coming here just for it. It is toward the top of my list of foods I really enjoy. We came here with our friends and they recommended the Quesoo Fundido. I love a good chorizo, my wife on the other hand does not. This was a good chorizo. The mix of cheeses were delicious and it was fun to watch them make it at our table. My wife had the Arroz Con Pollo. She really enjoyed it. I thought it was good. I would have liked the poblano peppers charred and cooked longer rather than just placed in the dish at the last minute and still quite crispy. Not quite as much flavor as I would expect from these awesome peppers. Think of a really tasty chili relleno and that is the texture I would have enjoyed more. - He Said read more

We have been here a few times in the last year or so. It has always been great and the staff really pleasant and they make great margaritas. Although there has been a recent menu change hasn't necessarily been for the best. Subtle changes were made to some of the dishes, but not enough to mark it down... yet. We figured we will try it again before making that decision. read more

Ashely, the bartender, did a great job making drink and food recommendation! I highly recommend looking sitting at the bar.

Came in for lunch with a friend with high expectations of the Vegan menu and WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED! I ordered the Black Bean Avocado Tostada and WOW! It was delicious! The staff was friendly and happy (even just having to rely on their eyes to see their expressions!). Our glasses stayed full and we were checked on frequently which is always so nice! I will 300% be coming back because now I'm addicted! Everything was very clean and it was great to see people out eating lunch supporting local businesses! Thank You! read more

So we have eaten here numerous times and enjoyed the food and service. Not sure what happened. I've learned over the years that if a Mexican place feels the need to charge for chips and salsa - bad sign - that is new. They used to have home made full size tortillas for chips - no more. They used to accompany their burritos with rice and beans - no more. The restaurant was dirty - food in the floor. Good atmosphere ruined. From a service standpoint - everyone looked mad. There were 6 of us - we didn't feel welcomed when we arrived and our server, while nice enough, clearly didn't like her job. We complimented the logo on her uniform - "oh, you mean my slaveware?" - we ordered basic and and 5 of 6 meals came out in time - 1 burrito showed up as were were finishing - and stayed in the bill. 2 stars because the food is still decent, but certainly a big slide in service, attitude, quality and value. Tip- raise your menu prices and quit nickel and diming your customers. Tip 2 - figure out why everyone that works there seems to be miserable - it matters. read more

I used to love Sonora but my recent visit has convinced me it would be my last. They have gotten VERY cheap. No complimentary chips and salsa, none of the meals come with sides, you have to pay for your rice and beans separately supposedly because "we were wasting a lot of food". My "carne asada" burrito was 90% onions and peppers. Used to be a great high quality spot for Mexican food. Now it's a just a cheap place where you get nickel and dimed to get a full meal. Plenty of other Mexican restaurants in Ogden more worth your time. Cheap owners with cheaper excuses. read more

Overall, I chose this location because of the proximity to where I was staying. I ordered a combo, and was surprised to find out that I would have to pay for salsa to go with a $30 meal. It's also was all right, the green was different. The red was pretty decent and a little smoky from ancho chilies. The rice was OK, lacked flavor, the beans, black beans, we're OK. The Carnitas was good. Tasty, flavor, overall, this is a very Americanized version of Mexican food, most things are fried, I would probably skip this place next time I'm back. Especially with the petty items like charging for salsa. The hostess was kind enough to tell me that if I were to eat there, and order the exact same item, pay the exact same price, tip the exact same amount, the chips and salsa would be free, however ordering it to go, I have to pay for it. That makes absolutely no sense because I'm not even taking up a table, but, this was their policy. read more
