The guacamole was OK nothing special salsas were OK was kind of bummed that we had to pay for chips and salsa that's typically free at the restaurants we go to. The Mezcal drink was good. It wasn't gross but it wasn't great either. The seasonings are unique compared to a typical Mexican food restaurant, which made the food meh. You have to pay $5 for chips and salsa and I didn't like either of the salsas. It seems like it's trying to be a hip Mexican food restaurant. This place used to be one of my favorites. Been here many time over the years. Great food made from scratch. Great chips and salsa and awesome fish tacos. Unfortunately somethings has changed in the last few months. The menu is half of what it used to be. They now charge $5 for chips and salsa (no refills, you want more you pay for another order). Chips and guacamole is $13!!! No more made from scratch. Ordered the fajitas and it came on a plain luke warm plate plate with no sides and 3 small corn tortillas that tore about just trying to get out of the paper (small dab of sour cream and guacamole only). Want rice and beans? Oh yeah that's extra. So sad. Was a great place at one time with great food. Probably won't be going back. read more

I have been coming to Sonora Grill for years and I always had my favorite "go-to" entrees there that I would recommend to anyone coming for the first time. I went today and learned that they had made several changes to their menu--which can be scary at first when you have a restaurant that you know and love. Everything that I ate was a new menu item and I have to say SONORA GRILL IS BETTER THAN EVER. The ceviche blew my mind--so fresh, so authentic, and so well thought out. The vegan enchiladas were so full of flavor and the perfect amount of spice--they are my new go-to. I had to keep sampling my friends' meals because everything was perfection. We ended with the flan and I've been thinking about it ever since. This restaurant is all about the details and this new menu blew my mind. My favorite Mexican-ish food in Ogden. It serves a mix of traditional and gourmet Mexican food. The service is timely and good. The ambiance is nice but can be noisy. It has nice tables but open floor plan with concrete floors. I enjoy the Carnitas and the Jalapeño Margaritas. read more

First time at Sonora Grill and it didn't disappoint! This dish was the best pork dish I have ever eaten. It was really tender and full of flavor. Every dish and appetizer was delicious. This place was really good and our waitress was awesome. We came here for brunch and she immediately had their amazing homemade chips and salsa on the table. She was super patient with my indecisive confusing 11 year old who takes 45 minutes to order something and then wants to chat with you. She even ensured he got some extra fruit without me being charge for two servings which was kind. The she made sure our drinks were filled at all times. So, let me just start right off with the fact that our server, Robert, was flat-out awesome. I came in with a large group, and he managed to take all our orders, keep things organized, get drinks to our multiple tables, keep our water glasses refilled, and do it all while keeping a friendly attitude. So, Robert: Kudos to you, bro. Other magnificent things about the Sonora Grill: The Queso Fundido. It's made at your table in a hot cast-iron skillet. It's got awesome flavor. If the skillet were not so hot, I would have licked it clean. The rest of the food is good. I didn't hear a single complaint from anybody. In fact, the only sorta-kinda "complaint" was that the portions were rather large. Nobody left hungry. And everything we tried made us happy. Lots of things made in house, to include their salsas. This is just a good restaurant. One downside: Parking. Be prepared to park two or three blocks away and walk to the door if it's a weekend evening. read more

It's a birthday tradition! My friends and I always meet up at Sonora Grill for my birthday dinner. This year we started things off with the Queso Fundido which was made tableside. Oh how I love melty cheesy goodness and this hit the spot. I opted for the carne asada burrito. The meet and mushrooms were tasty but I felt it a little heavy on the onions and peppers. Other highlights are the fish tacos, and pork items. We ended the night with some sopapillas. If you're the drinking kind the margaritas seem to be very popular, as do the loaded Coronas. read more

This used to be my favorite restaurant, now it's just an ordinary Mexican restaurant. Gone are all the unique and delicious dishes. I'm hoping they bring them back and once they do I will be back. We are on vacation out in Utah and stopped here with family and friends for a dinner. The atmosphere of the restaurant is good. The food was average due to the choices and the lack of alterations for dietary needs. This place was not kid friendly. It's more of an adult only restaurant for beef and pork lovers. They do have other meat options, but they can not be integrated with other dishes stated by our waiter Robert. The drinks were good as no one at our table hate a complaint or critique of them. They are good for large groups. If the food was better and it was a more well rounded restaurant I would give more stars. All the options were not explained well by the server. Articles on the wall hyped up the fresh guac and it was actually really good! The blackened fish taco was a huge portion and was delicious. I was so full by the tacos, I couldn't even scratch the refried beans and rice. For dessert, fried ice cream was the only possible choice since I was so full. It came with a cone laid down and whip cream filled with fried ice cream sprinkled with coconut. I'm not a fan of coconut but this was good. Last but not least, service was great. I really liked Sonora Grill overall. They are a bit CV@2020 restrictive in the way they take reservations and tables but I was finally able to secure a place to dine on a weeknight with my party. I had heard this place was veggie friendly and that is why wanted to eat here. Overall the reviews are correct that the wait staff in general are super supportive and understanding of their menu and making accommodations with getting what you want. The chips the offer for free are pretty darn good to start. They give you 2 different hand made salsas to go with them. The chips are actually giant tostada sized rounds they put in a basket stacked together with the salsas on the side. I liked that you just break off a part of the corn tostada to eat your chips. Kind of like breaking bread with friends. Very cool idea! The menu is very dietary friendly with a vegan options correctly written on the menu as an option. Many Mexican places make you have to ask a lot of questions yada yada yada to get what you want. Here it was at least easy to find on the menu. I'm always one to shake things up a bunch and this place was no exception. What does that mean you ask? Well I had a great idea that I was going to get their veggie burrito but I didn't like that the choices where a black bean burrito or a veggies only burrito. I'm like wanting both so asked the waiter I needed to complicate the order to add black beans to my fajita veggies and he was like WTF that's easy. Since it was Christmas time I also wanted the Christmas Style of Enchilada sauces to smother my veggie burrito Majado Style! Yes my favorite thing to ask for is have those chilies smothered over my burrito. The waiter was right on it saying that he thought that sounded like a good idea:_) But of course you need a margarita to make everything come together so I ordered on on the rocks and got an upgrade of a tequila the waiter recommend because life in 2020 can be short. Meal came out and I was impressed. Everything was fresh and the beans were a highlight of the dish. Totally need to get the fresh black beans here and the fajita veggies were really well orchestrated in the mix. No need for cheese at all as everything melded really well together. And the Red and Green Enchilada sauce on top just sealed the deal So good and awesome. And this waiter was fantastic making sure all was good. Little did I know Ogden had such a great Mexicali spot with some vegie oriented options to boot. I was pretty impressed and the only thing I would knock them on is they are a bit not easy friendly to get a spot in the door. I know they are popular and trying to accommodate the restrictions out there put I think they can do better to accommodate guests. The ratio of open tables to people coming in was pretty open I far as what I saw so no need to complicate things. Other than that I totally recommend this place for authentic Mexi food done right and to order. read more

On that rare occasion when you are so pleasantly surprised by a gustatory experience that you think it is unprecedented ever or at least, for a very long time, it is fun to reflect on the last such a rare time. Such was my experience at Sonora Grill today for lunch. I am a big fan of Chili Verde in general, but Sonora Grill's Chili Verde tops them all. What marvelous complex and balanced tastes displayed in this dish. The large piece of braised pork was fork break-apart tender, moist, and flavorful. The star however was the dark green sauce. It was simply to die for. After speaking to the kitchen manager, I can appreciate the process of making this superb dish. Not only is their method of cooking the pork unique and involving a 5-hour oven journey, the top secret, as it always seems to be, is in the array of some two dozen herbs and spices used in the sauce. I wish I could duplicate this dish at home, but before that ever happens, I will come back to my new go-to Mexican restaurant. I cannot give a higher recommendation than my best ever Mexican food experience ( and that includes many restaurants throughout Mexico). read more
