Overall, I chose this location because of the proximity to where I was staying. I ordered a combo, and was surprised to find out that I would have to pay for salsa to go with a $30 meal. It's also was all right, the green was different. The red was pretty decent and a little smoky from ancho chilies. The rice was OK, lacked flavor, the beans, black beans, we're OK. The Carnitas was good. Tasty, flavor, overall, this is a very Americanized version of Mexican food, most things are fried, I would probably skip this place next time I'm back. Especially with the petty items like charging for salsa. The hostess was kind enough to tell me that if I were to eat there, and order the exact same item, pay the exact same price, tip the exact same amount, the chips and salsa would be free, however ordering it to go, I have to pay for it. I have always loved Sonora Grill. So when we decided to go for a friends birthday I was super excited. They have changed their whole menu and I couldn't be more disappointed. One of our friends ordered a chimichanga which used to me amazing. Now you can not get it customized at all and if you want is smothered with Chile Verde be ready to pay $6 extra. The explanation given about the new menu was laughable. We stopped offering chips and salsa for free so you have more room to try new food. My Carne Asada quesadilla which used to be amazing was edible but had hardly any steak at all. The restaurant is still beautiful and the guacamole and Queso were delicious. Other than that it felt like an over priced fast food chain with a set limited menu that offered zero customizations. We won't be back unless the old menu returns. Sad day. read more

Service is really poor, areas of the restaurant look like it never gets cleaned, and the whole time you're there it feels like you're not actually wanted or welcome there. Sonora Grill is a great place for lunch or dinner in a semi-upscale setting. Service is excellent and you never need to wait for a drink refill or a new beer. While you wait for your entree they bring out a sampler of salsas and rather than chips, you get whole crispy tortillas to break up to your hearts delight. Be sure to ask for their extra hot habanero salsa if you like the heat! Great food and drinks. Be sure to order the table side guacamole if that's your thing! read more

Sonora Grill! The perfect place for this Arizona native. I first came here when a vendor for work brought us here. My wife, daughter, and I have since been back at least 15 times. Besides seafood items, we have probably tried it all between the 3 of us. While my wife has enjoyed all of her meals, her go to is the chili verde. My favorite is a combo that includes multiple different items including the chile rellenos. I would say it is a bummer to have to pay for chips and salsa refills but in all honesty, the customer service and the incredible food quality makes up for it. read more

Their not accepting the yelp coupon was only the first in a long lines of disappointment here. Their only saving grace was our waiter. He was attentive, friendly, helpful, and just seemed like a great guy, it's too bad that the food didn't match their staff's quality. The food looked amazing when it came out. The presentation was extremely well done and it had my mouth watering. Unfortunately, my tastebuds disagreed with what my eyes were telling them. It just lacked flavor. I ordered a combination of several different things, as did my fiancee. And though they looked great, the taste was very lack-luster. I was sorely disappointed, especially since it looked tasty. It was edible, and I did eat it, but only because I was hungry. I've had better Mexican at Taco Bell (and I don't like Taco Bell, but at least they season their food). I read that this place once won best of Utah for something. Don't get me wrong, it is delicious, but I have had better Mexican food for much less money. What still sets them apart are their beans, rice, chips and salsa. They still have a unique approach to chips and salsa which is honestly quite impressive. They bring out plenty of chips and two different types of salsa. Their rice is a coconut rice rather than the standard Mexican rice most other restaurants serve. I can not identify what they season their beans with but they are great. In the past I would order their carne asada platter, which was incredible. I learned on my last visit that they no longer serve carne asada platters. Apparently their steak is delivered pre-sliced. Having eaten here around 6-7 times, the quality of the food was distinctly less than the last time I was there. The restaurant is kinda dusty - both physically and metaphorically. Service was also slightly below average. We dined at a time when there were only two other tables, and the annoyance of the waitress having to answer questions and attend to the basic needs of our toddler (sippy cup and crayons) was palpable. As we were leaving we were left with a collection of snide remarks about how having to help a toddler in a restaurant is hard work. There was a time a few years ago when I would have happily driven hours to eat here. After my recent visit I'll happily drive past Sonora Grill to try another up and coming restaurant in the area. read more

I was really looking forward to having my post Christmas lunch with my best friend and sorry to say the service was pretty bad. The hostess seemed to be doing her best to avoid helping us, meanwhile there was an entitled gentleman with a group of 7 insisting he be seated & helped immediately rather than waiting like everyone else... to our surprise, he got his way! I wish I could say it stopped there but it didn't. Finally we were able to get checked in and seated after waiting 20 min which was fine. However, once seated the waitress seemed bothered by us being there. No chips were even offered (they used to do that I thought) & the food looked pretty but was a lot smaller portions than what they had last year & overall a huge disappointment! What's even more we felt rushed to leave & I wasn't even given my straw or salsa until I was pretty much done eating. No refills were offered either. They were not understaffed or slammed busy either. There really was no excuse for it. So let down . Do better! read more

This was our favorite Ogden restaurant. We've been there literally hundreds of times and recommended it to many friends. However, sadly the magic is gone. It's ok and still better than any other Mexican restaurant on Ogden, but nothing like before. The delicious giant chips are gone, substituted for cheap bagged chips. The salsa is still great but our favorite entrees are gone. My favorite, the stacked beef enchilada, wasn't on the menu for awhile but they would still make it for me, but not anymore. I understand how hard it is to make money in the restaurant business and appreciate the need to adjust prices to account for inflation; I just wish they had left the fantastic menu alone and adjusted prices as needed. read more

I'm sad to say our experience was not good. We were seated in a booth. The front desk was great and fast. Thats where things fell apart. We sat there for 20 min with nobody even stopping by our table. We took our time and looked over the menu which has changed dramatically. So many of the items that we liked were removed. The place is so loud you cannot hear someone sitting across from you. It used to be pretty good but, the owner has decided to go in a different direction. We decided to just leave and find another dinner spot. so we will not be back. What a shame :-( read more

By the name alone I would have never expected this to be Mexican food. It's actually a fancy place to get Mexican food lol. I started off with a drink of course. I seen a lot of pictures of the mango habanero margarita, so I had to try it. I order calamari as an appetizer and blackened season fish tacos as my entree. That drink? Wow. It's amazing. You can taste the sweetness of the mango and then in the end you get a little kick of habanero, and they blend so well together. They ask if you want salt on the rim and I opted for light salt, and I'm sad that I did, because drinking it from where the salt is makes it even better! You get salty, sweet and spice perfectly. This drink is a must order. The calamari? I have NEVER liked it anywhere else I've ordered it but this was beyond good. Fried in a nice batter for the right amount of time. I would return just for the calamari actually. Now my tacos? They come stacked, three of them and you get rice and refried beans. The tacos have a mango vinaigrette and cabbage with pineapples on top. They vinaigrette is overwhelming. It is wayyy too sweet and you have pineapple on top. They don't even give you hot sauce for your tacos. It's chulula (not the right spelling) or $1 for their own made habanero sauce. Pay the $1. It's a good amount. That sauce is amazing. I wish I could buy it in bulk. I'd use it on all my tacos and more. Warning, it does get hot! The rice was tasty and I love Spanish rice, and refried is the way to go. Never a problem there. Also, they give you tostadas and dip. Both red and green sauce. The red one had a thick slightly bitter taste and the green was a little too light, little sour but I chose that one. I found Senora Grill on Yelp and it was right across the street from my hotel. It had high marks and in the lobby lots if awards. I was still leary about how it would taste since I grew up in the Los Angeles area. I ordered my favorite carnitas. It was shredded pork and appeared to have been pan fried. It tastes okay, but I wasn't crazy about the pork being shredded. I like pieces of pork that had a crust outside, but tender inside. There was no inside in this dish, just crusty shredded pork. The rice and beans were not memorable. The only reason they rate even as high as three stars us their Margaritas. Because of the Margaritas, it might be smarter to go just for happy hour and skip their dinner. I would go back just for the Margaritas and maybe get nachos or chips and guacamole. read more

This used to be our favorite restaurant and just about the only place around where my fella and I could both enjoy a really good meal (I'm vegan and he won't touch a vegetable). Usually when we eat out one of us is having a good meal while the other is "making due" with the menu (usually me). Sonora was a rare gem, a non-vegan restaurant that seemed to actually understand food and how to create satisfying meals, vegan or otherwise. But all that changed with the recent menu overhaul. I've been so disappointed with the vegan options since the menu changed. They used to be fresh and flavorful and interesting, now they're just one-note; edible but disappointing and not something I'd particularly look forward to eating again. I'm so sad to have to put Sonora on the long list of places that I technically *can* eat at, but would really rather not. Just meh. read more

My quesadilla was awful; bland, small, undercooked onions, like from a school cafeteria. The beans and rice were small (over prices) and mediocre at best. The chips were stale and chewy. I got the build your own lunch special and it was like $10.50 for pick 3 items that came with rice and beans(for those of you that like beans ;)) and it was a really good amount of food. The Cochinita Pibil was AMAZING and I'd 10 out of 10 recommend trying it if you like pork. I don't normally stray from my norms but so glad I did. This place has gone down hill. Portion sizes have shrunk and food quality as well. Chips and salsa that were once complimentary are now $5, and lower quality than before. Sides are also now extra on top of entrees. $5 extra for a plate of rice and beans, that were included before. My wife usually orders fajitas, and they have been good in the past. We ate there tonight, and her steak fajitas hardly had any steak, and was just a mix mess of peppers, onions, and minimal thin slices of steak. Told the waitress we weren't happy about the lack of meat, only to have the manager come out and give some lame excuse about portion sizes, and made the whole situation awkward. Ended up just telling him never mind. We've been there a few times this year, and pretty sure tonight was our last time going. What once was a favorite of ours has become a place we don't want to eat at anymore. Service was subpar as well on top of the pour quality of food and portions. We also ordered the fresh side of guacamole which was very fresh. The only thing I would not order again was the fajitas. We are from California and traditional fajitas come on a hot plate with the meat and vegetables still sizzling. Not the case at Sonora. But none the less the fajitas were decent. The hostess was very cheerful and was pleasant to seat us even though it was late and we were a bigger party of 8. So we have eaten here several times in the past and ALWAYS been happy. Tonight, not so happy. The place was all but empty and our server, Justin took our order. I had ordered a bowl of cheese to eat with our chips and salsa. Our chips and drinks came and Justin said he'd be right back with the cheese. We waited and waited. Finally I told him that I had ordered the cheese to go with our chips and salsa. He said he'd be right back with it. He was probably still 5 minutes before he returned with a very small bowl of cheese. Then we waited for our meals. The place like I mentioned before was all but empty. Servers were all busy doing their side work so they could get out at closing. Still no food. Once we received our food, we weren't impressed. My tortillas that came with my fajitas were dry and hard. My wife's chili relleno was the size of a football it had so much breading on it. Not a good experience tonight!! read more
