The Rock Cafe is on Historical Route 66. Built in 1939 from stone that was excavated during the construction of Route 66. It is a charming small town cafe, rich in history. The owner Dawn Welch was the inspiration for the animated character Sally Carrera from the 2006 film Cars. The Cafe is rustic, casual, with a cool fun vibe. The staff is friendly and the service good. The dining area is not large. When we arrived there were a couple of booths and center tables available, but a few minutes later a group of 16 came in and filled the Cafe. We started with fried green tomatoes ($8,25). They were very good. The best I've had at a restrauant. All three of us ordered the chicken fried steak ($14.35), mashed potatoes, cream gravey, and fried Okra. It was very good. The chicken fried steak was just the right size and had substance compared to those that are big on batter and light on meat. The mashed potatoes and cream gravey just right. Loved the fried okra. Sometimes I get toppings, other times I don't. The two main women who run the place need better staff helping them in recent visits. While the staff have all been friendly, they haven't been consistent. It seems to be a new person every-time - always someone unfamiliar with the menu and how to run the POS. Cleaning the tables has also slipped through the cracks. I hope that gets handled soon - maybe it is difficult to find part time workers right now.
