Dinner with a friend at the Rock Cafe. Ken drove over from Yukon and we left our home just north of downtown OKC and arrived at the Rock Cafe in just under an hour. The drive is 56 miles. The Rock Cafe is on Historical Route 66. Built in 1939 from stone that was excavated during the construction of Route 66. It is a charming small town cafe, rich in history. The owner Dawn Welch was the inspiration for the animated character Sally Carrera from the 2006 film Cars. The Cafe is rustic, casual, with a cool fun vibe. The staff is friendly and the service good. The dining area is not large. When we arrived there were a couple of booths and center tables available, but a few minutes later a group of 16 came in and filled the Cafe. We started with fried green tomatoes ($8,25). They were very good. The best I've had at a restrauant. All three of us ordered the chicken fried steak ($14.35), mashed potatoes, cream gravey, and fried Okra. It was very good. The chicken fried steak was just the right size and had substance compared to those that are big on batter and light on meat. The mashed potatoes and cream gravey just right. Loved the fried okra. The meal was scrumdiddlyumptious. The Cafe was not noisy even though they were maxed out busy. The prices are very moderate. It's a fun little Cafe with good food. read more

The food was well cooked and lot's of flavor. I had the Jäegershnizel and my wife had the chicken salad. Both were very good. The schnitzel was breaded well and very juicy. The mushroom gravy had good flavor and texture. The chicken salad had a good variety of greens, not just one type of lettuce. A good portion of shredded chicken on top. This was a very large salad. There was enough for two people to share. Portion could have been better. Service was great. Attentive without being pushy. A fun place to eat. Lots of memorabilia from the movie Cars, which took inspiration from this restaurant. Definitely big on Route 66, too, as evidenced by the adjacent gift shop. read more

The Spaetzle (often called the German version of macaroni and cheese) restored my faith in humanity. The texture experience excels. The Chili Cheese Dog with fresh, raw onions (as foretold by the cheesy appetizer) was dense and flavorful, maybe the best no-frills chili dog in Oklahoma. My picky 13yo ate his first First Fried Apple pie with a slice of vanilla. His eyes got really big, and the plate was clean in an instant. The big treat, though, is the full-quarter slice of Poor Man"s "Pecan" Pie made with oats, not pecans. Served hot with a perfect slice of vanilla ice cream (yes, it's a tray-cut square) with a perfect crust -- This may be my favorite dessert ever, in the whole wide world. Of course the whole wide world needs more innovative classic food stops like this on Route 66. Also, ask to see their fire-surviving copy of Eternal Route 66 by Chuck Williams, an ironic souvenir from a prior iteration of The *eternal* Rock Cafe. If you're a fan of Sally the blue Porsche from the Disney Pixar movie Cars, ask to meet the owner, Dawn. She *might* tell you her story that inspired the sweetheart sports car, and John Lasseter, Pixar's chief creative officer is happy to confirm when visiting with memorabilia gifts that decorate the cafe. Food was 3 but location, ambience and service were a strong 4. Classic place on Rt 66. Really cool vibe inside and some of the most efficient and warm service I've had in over a year! How do they do it? The fried zucchini app was crisp and would have been great but seriously over salted so we really couldn't eat them. This is a great little place along Route 66. The staff is super friendly and helpful. Love all of the Cars memorabilia and celebrating the movie. The menu is huge. We had fried green tomatoes and spaetzle as appetizers. My aunt got the Rueben sandwich with onion laces and I got the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and fried okra. It was so much food and tasted delicious. Gourmet Magazine featured the chicken fried steak and spaetzle was featured on Diners Drive-ins and Dives. They have a gift shop too. The ambiance was very creative, with not just Route 66 memorabilia, and the history of the Rock Cafe, but also characters from the animated film, Cars. Lots of the film is documented on laminated stands in various locations around the building. I enjoyed the outside so much, unbeknownst to me, it was almost closing time when I walked in. Not only was I not informed of this, but was treated with respect and served delicious food promptly, and courtesy. My Yägersnitzel was extremely tasty. After finishing, I looked around and noticed I was alone. When I asked the nice young lady what time do they close? She told me they were already closed. We arrived at 7:30 pm on a Friday. We were greeted by a friendly girl, and promptly told we would have to get order placed by 7:45 because they close at 8pm. We agreed, and were seated. We ordered in time, and food arrived at 7:55. My complaint lies not in quality of food, but that we were unable to relax and enjoy our dinner. It's a small cafe, maybe 20 booths and tables. While we were being served, the staff started piling chairs on top of table so they could sweep. The staff appeared to be made up of high schoolers and college age kids. They became very loud, speaking as if no customers remained. We had to raise our feet when the sweeping girls came through. Loud volume, closing down party music was turned up. We stopped on the way back from Oklahoma City to the rock Café been there before this is my third or fourth time there I had an appetizer onion rings and jalapeño peppers wasn't the best that I had the best that I had was that Linda Mars in West Tulsa back to the rock café. I think everybody should try it because it is on route 66 and it's old-fashioned. The food is good. The service is good. The ambience is 1940s café middle of nowhere Oklahoma but it is on route 66 and it is cute and if you've never stopped, you need to go see what all of the hoopla is about. It's just fun seeing old stuff I remember coming down route 66 in California to Tulsa in the 60s I remember all these places if you haven't been you need to at least visit once just to say that you've been there love route 66. I can't say that I have traveled the old route 66 all the way from California to Chicago not too much of the old parts left but what is left you need to see it taking everything on route 66. read more

Fun place to visit while traveling Route 66. My husband loved his bacon cheeseburger. My breaded chicken tenders were more breading than white meat. My mashed potatoes and green beans were flavorful. This was a great place to grab a Saturday lunch. I told my wife that we'll start taking a Saturday or Sunday and try different restaurants in OK. We chose the Rock Cafe as our destination. It was an hour drive from Oklahoma City and upon arrival we parked but couldn't really locate the entrance. Once we did we were greeted and seated immediately. There were several open tables and it appeared that we may have missed the lunch crowd. A delightful server (Alyssa - no clue if we spelled her name right) guided us through the menu and made great suggestions. She checked on us periodically and at one point in time provided history regarding the restaurant. Very informative! Especially to tell the story about Betsy, the name of the grill. She even took us back to the kitchen to check it out after we finished our meal. Pretty awesome to know that the grill was the only thing left after a fire destroyed the restaurant in 2008. We decided on Fried Pickles as an appetizer they were very good. Both of us decided on the Chicken Fried Steak. It was good but to be perfectly honest a steak knife would have worked better than a butter knife. The mashed potatoes were real, the fried okra was perfectly cooked and crispy. I was pleasantly surprised that I could order dessert. Typically I don't but this time I managed to save room. We choose the Peach Cobbler to split. I found it to be overly sweet and although we ate it all it was not my favorite. After we finished eating we made a short walk to the Ed Smalley Centennial Park which is adjacent to the restaurant. The Rock Cafe was a fantastic stop on Route 66, Stroud, Ok. This is a historical building made from the old Route 66 highway. Destiny was our waitress. She has a wonderful personality, is well versed in the menu and the history of the Rock Cafe. Don't be shy to ask questions!! We went during a slow period (4 pm) and met with all of the staff as they took their shift breaks. We were able to see Betsy, the 75 year old powerhouse grill. Betsy, along with the fireplace, were the only two interior survivors of an atticfire in 2008. The mashed potatoes were homemade, The brown gravy...delicious. The chicken fried beef steak had minimal toughness & the hamburger steak was great. We will definitely be back!! read more

On a cross country road trip and were on our way from Oklahoma City to Tulsa and stopped at Rock Cafe for lunch. I have traveled all around the world and eaten at all sorts of amazing restaurants. This was one of the best meals I have ever had. We were chatting with the super nice Lorah and was asking her what she recommended. One of the ladies cooking happened to be walking by and asked if I liked burgers and I said yes. We talked about what I wanted and she made me a bacon cheeseburger with fired jalapenos. It was literally the best burger I have ever had. The fries were good as well and my mom loved her meal as well. We took fried hand pies to go and at them later at our hotel and they were also good. We tried Rock Cafe today and were expecting more of a German flair. It was a typical greasy-spoon-small-town-diner. Getting to the front door was tricky. It was like a maze. Service was friendly enough. Ambiance was quirky - as expected for a Route 66 stop. We both ordered Jagerschnitzel which was completely "one note." It tasted like greasy deep fried pork smothered in brown gravy. The speitzel itself was good and if we return, I will likely just order that. Small town diner -- a Route 66 icon. We were driving our 1963 Falcon up and down Route 66 and decided to stop at the Rock Cafe for lunch. The first thing I noticed was the open parking right at the front of the building, between the front door and Route 66 -- I wanted to park my classic car there for a photo, but it was NOT available for parking. Kind of odd. We parked in the gravel parking lot in the back, and followed the obscure signs winding through a gravel maze at the back of the building, near the kitchen entrance marked "employees only". Again, kind of odd. We walked past what appeared to be two outhouses, and entered the restaurant on the side opposite the parking, near the back of the building. Again -- kind of odd. Upon entering the building, you have a bathroom on the right and a kitchen straight ahead. It is not clear you are supposed to walk down the long hallway to the left -- someone in the kitchen told us what to do... We were seated quickly at noon on Saturday -- we expected it to be absolutely packed, but it was kind of dead in the dining area. Two tables were being used as office tables -- with computers and papers on them. Again -- kind of odd. (Do you see a pattern here?) Food was good -- hot and fresh, and delivered quickly. Chicken fried steak was kind of odd -- it seems they "fry" their chicken fried steak on a hot grill, which means the breading was kind of thick, heavy, soggy, and "kind of odd". Mashed potatoes were good. Gravy was good. Okra was hot and fresh and crispy (so they do have a deep fat fryer -- they just don't use it for the chicken fried steak!). Everything there was kind of laid back and low key. Our waiter was attentive, until the end of the meal when he took our plates and said have a nice day -- as if to say we were free to go -- but he never gave us our bill! We waited a long time and eventually had to ask him for the bill -- he said he simply forgot! You guessed it -- add another tick mark to the list of things "kind of odd" at the Rock Cafe... Leaving the building, you can't go out the door to the north (front door), or the east (side door that seems like it would dump you in the front parking lot) -- you have to walk down the long hallway to the kitchen, and go out the back, and then all the way around the back side of the building to the parking lot... The whole experience can be best described as, "Kind Of Odd". Or maybe "Route 66 charm"? Definitely different. Honestly, I think the Rock Cafe deserves something less than 5 stars, but I want to support Route 66 businesses. read more
