Visited at 2:15pm on a rainy Wednesday. The drive-in section screens were off and I was asked to go to the drive thru. Everything was hot and fresh, and came out fast. Chicken tenders were surprisingly juicy, Ched R Peppers were also great. Onion Rings were perfect, but the Sonic Cheeseburger had cold toppings making the burger slightly cold. On top of that, I opened the burger foil and diced onions fell all over my car, which is probably my fault, but good to know for next time! I used to hit up Sonic's as a rare treat while traveling down South years ago, but when they opened up locations in the Philadelphia market I never had them again .... until recently. Sadly because of COVID or short staffing this location did not have carhops to bring your food out to you so order from the drive thru first and then park. The wait was a little long because they seemed short staffed, but the girl who helped me was pleasant and polite. The lot itself was clean and I ended up eating my Supersonic burger in the drive in area. My son always wanted to try them because of their commercials (grr thanks TV). My son had a kids burger meal with tots and he devoured it. The burger was bigger than his head, but he enjoyed every bite. I had a supersonic burger which is basically their double cheeseburger lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle and it was just as tasty as the times I remember on those long trips South many moons ago. I read a lot of reviews that complained of long wait times and I can attest to that, but in my opinion the burger was worth the wait! Ordered through the mobile app, pulled into a spot and tried to enter what spot I was in, kept getting an error message. Pushed the speaker button and let them know. We ordered fries, chili dogs, and poppers with drinks, barbecue sauce, and ranch. Did not get any of the sauces we requested, but instead a bunch that we didn't. Food was super greasy-- old grease greasy-- especially the fries. The server did not want to leave the window tray, but did not say that. Instead, she rested the tray on the window and rudely pushed the food at me. It was confusing. I asked for the sauce we ordered we ordered and some napkins. She said should bring them right out, but we never saw her again despite sitting there for the whole meal. It was around 2:30 p.m. midweek, and not busy. This was our first time back since this location closed many years ago. We won't be back. The app asks you to leave a tip when you order, and we left the maximum suggested amount. I've changed my mind on this place. Yesterday, I posted a review, and knocked them to two stars. I'll explain why in a moment. I went back a second time tonight with the wife, and I'll give them a star back. They are officially OK in my book. So I am editing this to a completely different review. They're still not great. If you compare the experience to a place like Nifty Fifty's, it's probably not a fair comparison but Nifty's will win every time. If you compare them to Charlie's, Zac's, or the Last Stand, again maybe not fair since it's a chain vs local, but Sonic might win on a couple of points while the local places just taste better to me. If you start comparing Sonic to McDonalds or Burger King, Sonic definitely has unique qualities that will draw you to them. I've been to three other Sonics in my life before this one opened. I always enjoyed the experience from a service standpoint, but I never thought the food lived up to the experience. But I hadn't really tried a lot of the menu in those three experiences. I usually just got single burgers, chicken fingers, and tots. As much as I love the tater tots option, the rest of the food was edible if not ordinary. I went for a SuperSonic Bacon Cheeseburger, which is a double, and the wife went for a single cheeseburger with the works and jalapenos. Decided I needed to at least taste a small chili cheese tots, and the wife got onion rings. We did split a chocolate shake, and the limeade that everyone seems to love, though we went for strawberry on the owner's recommendation over cherry. My burger was definitely better than past Sonic burgers I've had. I think they need to be doubles to be any good to me. But, I still think that McDonalds and Wendy's do better burgers. Sonic might beat BK though. My wife thinks Sonic is better than McD's. So we have a split decision there. No, they won't beat places like Charlie's or Zac's anytime soon. But I'm willing to give them points now. I was told by a friend who used to work at a Sonic in Texas years ago that they hand dip their onion rings in the ice cream mix along with the batter to give them sweetness. Well, I don't know if they still do that. But I'll say the onion rings do have a touch of sweetness to them. Pretty good overall, but the wife thought they could have used salt. The chili cheese tots... well now, Sonic has officially hooked me on something. These could be a dangerous obsession. I may have to go back on my diet and only eat these once or twice a year. Let's just say that I tasted them first, and polished them off before I even touched my burger. These are what won Sonic the third star and got them to OK status. The shake was decent. Better than McDonalds, nowhere near as good as Nifty Fifty's. In fact, I'd put the Sonic shake maybe a notch below Mister Softee (which I have always loved due to the rich chocolate taste they seem to have). But, it's good enough. The shakes are probably better if you go for a creative flavor, and the half price deal after 8pm is solid. I liked the limeade, but I probably should have gone with cherry. Nothing wrong with the strawberry, but according to others who swear by the cherry, I feel like I missed out. Next time perhaps. So Sonic officially gets the OK tag in my book. This review is a summary of the past 2 years of my experiences at this Sonic Drive-In. I am an avid Sonic fan. Growing up, my grandparents would take me to their neighborhood Sonic as a treat when I visited them, and that began my love of this unique American chain. I remember being mystified by the "big red button" to place your order, and of course, the waiter/waitress delivering your food on roller skates. Unfortunately, this Sonic is nothing like the Sonics I knew growing up. This location's first downfall is their unpredictable hours. At least four of the times I have traveled to this location, their store was closed, even though their website and google profile that I checked before my trip indicated they would be open. In addition, the hours posted on their door when I arrived indicated they should have been open. On one of these occasions, there were employees inside the store that talked to me through the glass and said that they had closed. On another occasion, they placed a traffic cone in front of the entrance to prevent cars from entering. In order to patronize a restaurant, or any business, the restaurant must indicate to the customers when they are open. The most common channels are their website, google, yelp, etc. Without this basic but critical information, it becomes difficult to justify making future trips here. Unfortunately, based on my experiences, this Sonic location has failed to post accurate/up to date hours regularly. Future trips now seem pointless, knowing there is a high probability that I will arrive to a closed store. My most recent trip here was a mild success, in that the store was open. I chose to go here while driving home from another activity, so there was no potential lost time if the store ended up being closed. When I arrived, there were four cars ahead of me in the drive-thru, and nobody in the stalls or at the counter. The cars in front of me didn't move for a few minutes, so I put my car in park and started opening my mail, texting some friends, reading email etc. When I looked up due to the car in front of me moving, 20 minutes had gone by. My order was taken after approximately 35 minutes of waiting in the drive through line. I ordered one medium Oreo Chocolate Master Shake. I then pulled up past the drive-thru order kiosk and continued to wait. While I was waiting, I was approached by a staff member at my window to confirm my order. I replied I ordered a medium Oreo Chocolate Master Shake. The order was promptly brought out by another staff member, and given to the customer in the car in front of me. A few minutes later, the staff realized their mistake, and once again approached me at my window to confirm my order. I replied I ordered a medium Oreo Chocolate Master Shake, again. A few minutes later, a staff member brought out the order, took my payment, and off I went. I spent nearly one hour in the drive-thru lane waiting for my one Oreo Chocolate Master Shake. Upon arriving home, I sat down at my table to enjoy my shake and noticed it was quite thick. After closer inspection, it appeared I was given an Oreo ice cream, and not a sip-able shake. In addition, after scraping away the Oreo layer at the top, the ice cream was white (vanilla) and not brown (chocolate) like their menu shows. I was dissatisfied with the texture, and opted to freeze my treat for another day. I lifted the cup off the table and to my surprise, the bottom of the cup had a crack in it. I spent the next 20 minutes cleaning off my table, and backtracking to all the places in my vehicle that the ice cream had dripped. In summary, I spent approximately one and a half hours attempting to buy and consume one Oreo Chocolate Master Shake from a fast food restaurant specializing in this type of dessert. They were unable to serve me fast, they were unable to serve me correctly, and they were unable to cleanly transfer their product from their kitchen to my vehicle. It seems they have failed at all the core components of their business. Based on my experiences, I would not recommend you patronize this Sonic location, as it seems this location is not capable of effectively serving customers. On this same street, you can find Rita's Ice Cream and CJ's Ice Cream. Just a few additional minutes will get you to Coldstone or Richmans. All of these alternatives have a delicious product with similar prices with reliable hours and fast service. If you like Sonic for its food, the McDonalds across the street can accommodate your burger and sandwich cravings. The servers do not ride rollerblades here, so there is nothing that differentiates this Sonic location with any other ice cream or drive-thru chain. Thank you for reading. If I could do a 0 star i would. My daughter asked to go to Sonic to check out the half priced drinks. After a long hiatus (because of poor service), I gave in and took her there last week. When we arrived we saw a short line and thought that we would join the drive through lane. After waiting at the speaker box for several minutes as the lone car in the line we were finally serviced. We asked a question about the menu and was met with "I don't know ", I thought okay let me ask a different unrelated question to which I received the same response but with a more sarcastic tone. This Sonic was one of best I've had the pleasure of visiting. We were on our way back to NY and decided to go here before hitting the turnpike. The cherry limeade was so refreshing and cold, I love it seriously, I'm in love. Reminded me of a cherry lime Ricky like they used to make in NY. The cheeseburgers were hot and fresh, the fries had the crunch to salt ratio down packed. My mom had one of their shakes, she said it was good but not better than Shake Shack, which is probably the best place to get a milkshake on the East coast. The self serve drive thru is cool, just make sure your card don't get declined, and if so, they'll automatically bring the recipe to you so you can pay by cash. We asked for diced onions on everything, there wasn't a diced onion in our whole order. We ordered a coney combo with a cherry slush and a bacon double cheeseburger combo with sweet tea. We didn't get either of the drinks. He also ordered a pulled pork sandwich but they gave us a second cheeseburger UGH. He got a vanilla shake, I got a chocolate shake that tasted like vinegar ??? I couldn't eat it. The vanilla flavor is barely noticeable, and the chocolate flavoring tasted like chemicals or something very weird. Almost forgot, we ordered all kinds of extra sauces like ranch and their signature sauce and barbecue sauce, salt and pepper. All we got was a couple packets of ketchup. No straws, no utensils. After viewing this location's yelp reviews, I repaired myself for not getting orders right so I repeated my order twice. Medium chili cheese tots and a Jr deluxe cheeseburger- all the way please. The order taker repeated the order and confirmed my total. All there left to do was wait! It seems like no one uses the car ports as everyone I witnessed went through drive-thru window. One of the tips at Sonic and every fast food establish for that matter is if you are having to wait for your food, chances are the fries or tots are getting fried fresh. This happened to be the case and out came a friendly carhop bringing me golden brown tater tots that just came out of the fryer. Delicious! You might wonder what happened to the burger... I just think Sonic is overrated, food is nothing special, but still better than fast food places like mcdonalds. That being said, this sonic is a good addition to this dilapidated stretch of macdade blvd. That whole area depresses me. Surprisingly, this is the nicest sonic i've ever been to. Carhops are friendly and we didn't have to wait long. This sonic actually has an inside area where you can eat which i've never seen before. Unfortunately the bad reviews are true here, this place is run by kids, who couldn't stay off their phones long enough to bring me my food or to get me a straw when I asked.
