The salon is owned by really nice Indian women who will accommodate your every need. I've been here twice. The first time I walked in off the street for an eyebrow wax, but then found that they do threading!!! I was impressed by how quick and thoroughly the service was. When I arrived for my mani-pedi they knew exactly which services I had booked and offered me tea (much appreciated in the cold winter!) The massage chairs both massage and heat and have moveable neck support. They even have a cute little pink chair for little girls coming with their mommies. After trimming, filing, cuticile removing, scrubbing, exfoliating, washing, lotioning, and massaging, they give a hot towel patdown. Then nails are painted with the color of choice! Pretty mush the same process for hands and feet. My technician was an Asian male... Probably the only non-family member on staff. He was good and didn't try to force a conversation. My complaint is that he did cut my cuticle a little bit. It bled, but he put some green stuff on it which stopped the bleeding and made it not hurt at all. I have to admit -- I've only been here for one service , threading, when I can't get in with Rashida B and her magical eyebrow shaping skills. I'll need to check this place out for their other services. I have heard good things about their mani/pedi services... Back to the threading -- I always get the same girl (which is a good thing, unfortunately I don't know her name). She does a good job -- however she put lotion on my face the last time and I really didn't appreciate that. I think $15 for an eyebrow threading is a bit steep -- but it's the closest place to my house so it's worth it to me to not have to drive all the way to Devon to have this done. I recommend going -- the salon is very clean and the staff is always friendly. They also sell OPI nail polishes which is a plus -- I've gotten some very cute colors that I hadn't seen elsewhere there. read more

I used a Groupon for a mani-pedi here, and the overall service and the feel of the place were ok, but not stellar. You have to pay for street parking, but it's not hard to find a spot. You should call ahead and make an appointment, because the day that I came, I showed up an hour or two before closing and they were all booked up. The physical space is a bit dated--the decor includes bizarre posters of sultry women which could be straight out of the late '80s, kitchy drapery, and fake flowers. The space is clean, though chairs are pretty worn and in general it seems like not much has been updated in the past ten years. This is no-frills place where you might want to get a quick lunchtime manicure, but not plan a bachelorette party. I remember the selection of colors being pretty good. The woman who did my nails was really nice and fun. However, the whole procedure took longer than expected (about an hour and 20 or 30 minutes) and I started to get worried about my parking meter expiring after an hour. Overall, I was satisfied with the service. However, once I went outside and looked at my nails in the light, I was disappointed with the quality of the manicure. I called day of my intended manicure and this lady picked up and said if I came in that morning, she could fit me. She didn't take my name and I'm not really sure if I had an appointment to be honest. When I got there, I was surprised that only one person was working the entire salon. The lady was extremely talkative - almost to the point where I was uncomfortable: think the things you normally don't discuss with strangers, i.e., politics. Go anywhere else but here. I came in on a Saturday afternoon. The place wasn't busy at all, there was one person getting a pedicure and another person getting a manicure. I explained I wanted a eyebrow and lip wax and a manicure. They did the manicure first. The so called spa manicure was a joke. She didn't ask what shape I wanted, didn't clean under my nails, no sink to wash your hands, and made my cuticles bleed. She was extremely rough. I wanted my cuticles cut, not my whole finger taken off too. The green stuff she put on them did nothing to stop the burning. She sprayed rubbing alcohol on my nails twice which also made the pain worse. My cuticles felt like they were on fire! Polish application was sloppy and the rubbing alcohol dried out my skin and made it look ashy. A different person did my eyebrow and lip wax. Eyebrows didn't look shaped at all and I could still see and feel hairs above my lip when I got home. 3 days later, my cuticles are still sore and have scabbed over from the bleeding. Radha is my new go-to nail tech at Sonia! She is SO meticulous which is great because I am OCD about my nails. I really enjoy talking to her and she just does such a great job, I'm hooked. My nails seriously always look so darn good and I feel like I never take photos to add to yelp, but this was worthy so I'm including one! This place is a great secret in Bucktown, I live 2 blocks away and for some reason never knew it was here until I saw it on Groupon, and now I go every 2-3 weeks for a no-chip. They have great colors for manicures, pedicures, and no chips and there is no loud music or TVs blaring while you're in there - very peaceful. I suggest you check it out! read more

The worst part, besides the trauma that will possibly keep me out of any waxing salon for months, was that while I was gritting my teeth, I was being blamed for the pain. Threading, where they take some sting, twist it tight and remove unwanted hair from your face is a delightful alternative to waxing. Although its a bit more painful, since it is similar to tweasing, it takes the same amount of time and the estitician has more control over your eyebrows. the best part, the cost. I just walked in on a Sunday and they were able to do a polish change and then I noticed a sign for eyebrow threading so I decided to try it as my brows needed some help. The threading was amazing. She did my brows in like 2 min. My manicurist was sooooo sweet. I just needed a polish change, but she took her time making sure everything was done perfectly and even filed my nails for me. I didn't realize that Sonia Herbal Salon does threading.. I'm sick of having to go so far to get my eyebrows threaded, and the other salons that do threading in this area have been so unreliable. Elo Salon fluctuated their prices and kept replacing their threading girl. Parlor 836 was always closed whenever I go there, despite their printed hours saying they were opened. You never know. I hate to write such a bad review when my nail tech worked hard and had the right intentions but the atmosphere, front desk staff, and products are all sub par here. I did use a Groupon, which might just warrant bad service these days. The front desk lady put the movie "Damages" on the tv, if you're not familiar it's a movie where a daughter in law sleeps with her father in law and is basically porn. Despite everyone's uncomfortable comments the front desk seemed unphased. I finally asked her to change it after the 3rd sex scene. The staff treated a few other walk ins rudely and made me feel uncomfortable. And two days into the manicure my pink color had turned fully yellow. So manicure, removed. Ok, I've had a few services done here, and Johanna is wonderful - she does threading, nails and massage. So for her, I would give 4 stars. But, the hair salon part of it, not so much. I should have realized that it wasn't a good sign if someone was available last minute for a cut and blow dry. There was a young girl who cut my hair and blew it out. She used a ridiculous amount of hair spray and the cut itself, well, I could barely tell. My hair didn't have that smooth feeling that you should have when someone blows out your hair - especially after a haircut. Plus - it took her like 2 hours. Ridiculous! I get the feeling that the people who work there don't like their jobs - wait scratch that - I think their boss must be rotten. Not a pleasant salon feeling at all. I am excited to say that I've found my new threading salon! I was a D'Bellagio customer for a few years and wouldn't have found Sonia's if they hadn't closed. They are incredibly friendly upon arrival and only charged $12 for eyebrow threading! I went mid-day during the week and sailed right in. Just went here yesterday with my boyfriend to get a mani/pedi. I was told that my bf had to wait for a bit. I soon found out half way through my service,he had to wait till im done so my tech can work on him!! There was three techs but only two can do pedi!! Got a shellac manicure, worst ever. There are many great places to get your nails done in Chicago, especially on Division and/or North Ave. Unfortunately this is not one of them. There were a myriad of problems (listed below) that made this one of the worst mani/pedis I've ever had. - When I made the reservation, I let the woman know that I had a groupon for both a no-chip manicure and a no-chip pedicure. She said it was no problem and made my reservation for both services. However, when I got there, they only had an appointment for a manicure and then told me I could only use one of my groupons. So right there I've lost $20 and I had to talk the staff into finding the time to provide both services. - They had a display of fake nails that showed all the no-chip colors. Once I selected my colors, the staff were unable to locate those colors. - The nail tech said she didn't know how to do any nail art, not even polka dots. - The color that the nail tech used looked nothing like the nail display color that they were eventually able to locate. Overall, this was a very negative experience. My nails came out looking fine, but not spectacular. If you're looking for a good mani/pedi, I would look elsewhere. read more

I made an appointment at the North Ave location in the middle of October for the morning of a friends wedding. I was told no problem and they confirme, I even let them know I was using a Groupon. I walked in this morning to be told they only have one 10am appointment and it was not for me. It must be mentioned that one of the girls said that wasn't telling the truth. Yes, I'm lying about making an appointment and it's not even remotely possible that someone in your salon made a mistake. I love this place! I only started threading about a year ago, but am a total convert. I am pretty OCD about my eyebrows and was very reluctant to let anyone else touch them. I was an avid plucker for years and my brows looked good, but Abaigael C. talked me into trying threading. And now my brows always look GREAT after I leave here. I don't even have to tell them about my weird mis-matched brows, or how if you pull out one little hair on my left brow it messes up the whole shape (told you I'm OCD!). They do a great job every time. Even came in after I had to do a last minute emergency wax elsewhere and had totally botched, misshapen brows. They fixed the shape and told me to come in again in three weeks and it would be back to normal. Have also tried the lip threading - yikes! Yesterday she waxed first and then threaded a little which was much less painful. But again - they do a great job every time. Afterwards, they'll put on antiseptic, lotion, or neither based on your preference. I always used to go to Sonia's on Clark but have moved closer to this one and love this location, also. The Clark street location is cheaper, but if you go here on Tues-Thurs they will give you 20% off your services. So I walked out hair free for $18 + tip! read more

This is the best salon in the area - they have great prices, are conveniently located, and their staff is incredibly sweet and accommodating. I love their discount on weeknights and they play movies in the main area, which is great while getting your services! Another plus is you don't have to make an appointment, I've always been able to walk in and be served right away - even just before close. They really take their time with the mani/pedis and have been really great about touching me up when I (inevitably) mess up my nails the next day :-) I recommend them for this and their waxing. I went here a little over a week ago for a pedicure. The place was empty (it was a Sunday) and the girls were very attentive. I was offered a computer to surf the net, a beverage and magazines. The pedicure took about 30 minutes to complete and the girl did take her time, but while she trimming the cuticle on my big toe she cut too far and then continued cutting. My toe got infected and today is the first day it hasn't been red and painful to the touch. I even had polysporin on it all of last week. Another complaint, I went in there maybe a day or two after I had trimmed my own toenails so they were pretty short to begin with. The girl ended up cutting my toes even shorter which just made my toes look ugly (I have really small feet, toes, toenail, etc. and when my toenails are really short it just looks bad.) Also, the polish on my toenails starting chipping about 3 days after the pedicure and I only wore sandals during that time. I've had pedicures from about 3 other places and none of them have chipped that quickly. I've also been to Sonia's and had my eyebrows threaded. Worst pain I've ever felt in my life. Worse than a tattoo and I have about 10 in multiple places. A good eyebrow threader doesn't hurt that bad. read more

I haven't tried any of their other services, but find them reasonably priced and friendly. Came here based off a friends recommendation and had a good experience. The salon was clean and well lit and seemed overall nice. Only one lady was working, so I had to wait about 10 min which wasn't a huge deal for me. She had me go sit in a chair and told me to hold my eye and I stared at her blankly (I'd never gotten my eyebrows threaded before). She asked if it was my first time and showed me what to do. She was incredibly quick. Like it took 2 minutes quick. She had me stand up and look and was happy to fix a spot I pointed out to her. She trimmed by brows and I was off from there. I've been searching for a place to have my eyebrows threaded in Wicker Park for almost a year now. Well this was certainly worth the wait! I stumbled upon this place after getting a (horrible, horrible) haircut next door. This was a Friday evening and I was able to walk in and be seen immediately. I initially asked just to have my eyebrows threaded, but decided what the hell...why not pay a couple dollars more for the $20 deal of a facial massage and eyebrow threading.... I'd never had a facial massage before this and boy was I in for a treat! The woman who took care of me was very kind, gentle and AMAZING! I almost fell asleep! I went here for Threading and a Pedicure as a walk in on a Saturday. The Pedicure was $30, you can't beat the price, and the salon was very clean and nice. It looks fairly new inside the salon, and the pedicure chairs even vibrated and were adjustable. A movie was playing on the Flat Screen TV while I was there, but only about 4 people came in for services outside of me. The Pedicure was average, but for $30, its pretty no frill. The staff was only moderately friendly, and could use an injection of customer service. I will give it another try though maybe it was just me... The threading was great and quick. In the time it took me to walk 3 chairs to grab a magazine, they'd sat the only other girl in the salon down in my seat. When I asked them what just happened, they mumbled some gibberish out, which I couldn't understand. I proceeded to wait for another 15 minutes before someone else could see me. It went downhill from there. I gave this place 2 stars (instead of 1), because my nails look alright, but after being there for 1h 45 minutes, they better. I have been really pleased with the service all 3x I've been here for a no-chip manicure, but the overall atmosphere is unprofessional and less than relaxing. What keeps me going back is their $25 regular priced no-chip manis, all which have lasted me longer than any no-chip from another salon - 3+ weeks. All times I've been there, there are weird movies/music videos on the TV, the staff is eating or drinking, and the salon is a mess. I wouldn't say it's dirty, but there's a lot of clutter. The lighting isn't great either. I've always had luck with my manicurist, but I recently found out she left (probably for a more professional salon). Will listen to you if you have specific concerns or requests.
