Two times! That is the number of times that we've visited this Somisomi in Pleasanton, CA. SomiSomi is a Korean dessert chain. They serve up some tasty taiyaki and soft serve ice cream. What is taiyaki? Taiyaki is a Japanese or Korean cake waffle cone shaped like a fish. The batter of the cake reminds me of American pancake batter. SOMISOMI has different flavors of soft serve ice cream. Not all the flavors are available every day though. So some days your favorite flavor may not be there. My favorite flavors are the Mango flavor and the Ube flavor. You can choose to only have the Taiyaki with no soft serve ice cream. The taiyaki can have one of the filling flavors available that day or you can choose to have no filling. My favorite fillings are the Nutella filling and the custard filling. Again they are not always available daily. They prepare those fish shaped waffles right in front of the customers. They pour the batter in their special waffle makers. A couple minutes later they are ready to enjoy hot and fresh! I prefer having the soft serve ice cream in a cup separate from the taiyaki. Most folks though order the taiyaki with filling plus the soft serve ice cream all together. It does make a fantastic photo opp! Whatever you choose.....you are sure to like it. Give them a try. Very disappointing service. Went in around 8:45, and yes I was aware they closed at 9 but there was still a line and nothing was said when I entered. I waited in line for 10 minutes, made it to the front of the line, and the guy looks at me (and the 4-5 people who came in after me) and said they were not taking any more taiyaki orders. I appreciate that they offer "upside down" cones where they put the ice cream in a cup first and then put the waffle fish on top. This is extremely helpful for little ones since it's easier for them to hold and eat. This location in particular has ample parking and is surrounded by some of our other favorites (85 degrees and Kura sushi) which makes it a fun place to stop. Love visiting SomiSomi locations all around the bay, but this particular location did not give me a great experience this time around. On March 8th, 8:30ish, my family and I ordered some taiyaki. I understand it was very busy during this time, so I appreciate the workers and their hard work. My family ordered 3 red bean and 2 custard taiyaki as seen on the receipt. They were given all red bean instead. When we confronted the worker (Trav**), he insisted that the custard were there. Very hard to believe when red bean is shown in each one. Then, my separate order arrived, and one taiyaki had a hair in it. I showed this to the same worker, and without saying sorry (at least, I dont remember them saying such), he said I could have another one after a 20 minute wait. I had already waited prior for my order (not an issue), but having to wait again for a very disturbing find in my food was not expected. Perfect dessert for a hot day! I appreciate them being opened until 9:30 pm since there is always a late night craving for dessert. Came here an hour before they close and there was a line of people waiting to order. Luckily, service was fairly quick and we didn't have to wait too long. I am very disappointed in this establishment. I love coming here for their fast and kind service. But yesterday I came with my aunt(who hasn't been here for a while) and she was laughed at. The workers there laughed and made side comments before telling her that the toppings came before they top it with the fish. I am such a fan of display. I absolutely love it whenever I can. I try to go here, but I always call ahead of time because they do switch their flavor so it's nice to know before I go in and have to decide. There's usually a line that is almost out the door, but it does move very fast. The only heads up is that if you're looking for these stuffed fish with no ice cream and just purely the taiyaki it's a longer wait. When I went, the weight was about 30 minutes to order those so I skipped it and just got the ice cream instead I always get the one with the ice cream and the fish on top and I do like their custard topping as well as Nutella those are probably my top favorite too. First off, you can't go wrong with ice cream! Our kiddo convinced us to have something sweet after dinner so we headed over to Somisomi. It's great how the menu has a "step by step" of how to order and the options- it makes things much easier and moves the line along quicker! I love the different flavors of soft serve and how you can swirl some of them and how you can choose your filling for your taiyaki. I always love to order the upside down ahboong so I don't have to feel so rushed to eat the ice cream before it melts! Bonus points for how you can have toppings sprinkled on at the end with no extra charge! This SomiSomi location is in the Pacific Pearl plaza. This is a busy area / plaza with a big parking lot, but it gets pretty busy on weekends and weeknights, so parking may be hit or miss here, but I usually find a space further away and just walk over. Ordering is through an employee at the register, but when it gets busy, which is most evenings / nights, then you may have to wait at the front counter for awhile before being helped. This location once had the most consistent quality, but it has been hit or miss for me - different experience / taste on each visit for some reason. I only frequent here because this is their closest location to me (without having to cross the bridge), but I find myself going a bit further to their other locations in the past few months instead. I have not been to this location in the past few months because of the poor and unprofessional customer service, but when I recently came back, it seems like there were a bunch of new employees and service was at the very least decent. My go to is usually their Matcha Soft Serve in a cup with no filling and / or 2 pieces of Cheddar Taiyaki. Now that they released the Matcha Custard filling, I get 1 piece of Cheddar Taiyaki and 1 piece of Matcha Custard Taiyaki. Both are for the most part delicious, but I feel like the cheddar one seemed a bit empty / not enough cheddar, while the matcha one seemed a bit melty / runny compared to their other locations. I recently ordered their Upside Down Ahboong with their matcha soft serve & new Matcha Custard filling. While I did enjoy that the Matcha custard was not hot like it is in the taiyaki, I did not prefer that the ahboong is cold and a bit hard, since it is not fresh and have been sitting out on the tray for awhile. I also tried their Matcha & Milk swirl when it was in stock and it was decent, but the milk flavor overpowered the matcha, which I did not really prefer. This is our go-to spot whenever we are here at the Pacific Pearl Shopping Center or at the nearby San Francisco Premium Outlets. This place is always busy but service is very efficient. Line moves quickly and the food comes out at a very reasonable time. Our favorite is the matcha soft serve which we either get in a cup or on top of a red bean-filled taiyaki. Very delicious both ways. Ube and black sesame are tied for second. It's a very small place so we always savor the treat outside the store. We always enjoy our time here. I loveeee SomiSomi. We randomly stopped by on a Saturday afternoon. Lucky us there was no line! I ordered the Cookies and Cream with Ube swirl and the cute Taiyaki cookie waffle fish on top. Our order got delayed because their system to process payments froze and the girl tried to make up for it by grabbing my order and topping it with the fish waffle and handing it to me. BUT I wanted toppings.. lol.. When I went to the topping corner it seemed they had very limited toppings. The Somi Somi I go in Santa Clara definitely has more toppings and little cookies + fruit options available but this one only has cookie crumbles. When I picked my Biscoff Crumble topping the guy put the toppings on the sides of the waffle fish. Isn't it supposed to be toppings first to cover the whole ice cream THEN waffle fish? So I didn't get much toppings.. which I found disappointing.. Anyway I LOVED my ice cream! SomiSomi is always great and consistent. As for the service here, it was super fast and the kids working there were polite. They were not friendly exactly.. but polite. lol. Also there was a huge line of people on the wall eating ice cream from high tables. Can you at least provide chairs for your customers? The one I go to in Santa Clara has chairs and tables nearby.
