Excellent authentic fresh Mexican food. Had the basics, cheese enchilada with half and half red and green sauce, and chicken taquitos. Both were exceptional. The enchiladas because the sauce was almost sweet with what I could tell were the best ripest freshest chilies available and the taquitos because of the clean fresh finely chopped iceberg lettuce, dried crumbly sweet cheese on top, like instead of overwhelming gelatinous greasy globs of Jack or whatever, and the charred ends of chicken they let hang out during deep frying. It's not inexpensive but at least you're paying for quality and the freshest ingredients around. There are servers in the dining room that will bring you ice water and sauces and otherwise take care of you, but because we didn't get drinks from the market cashier like we were supposed to or not, thankfully we brought cash to leave a tip on the table for the server because there was no receipt for the ice water or sauces we got from her to otherwise prompt a tip. I saw guys getting beers from the market refrigerators to go with their food, but I'm still not sure how it works to order other drinks, like a soda with ice. UPDATE - went back for early Sunday breakfast. My two tacos were good, but their breakfast burrito blew my socks off. Hub got the one with bacon and it's huge. I had room, so I finished it and can't wait to go back and get my own. The salsa and like red enchilada sauce brought to the table were good, but not needed as it seemed they added flavor ahead of time with some clear not heavy salsa or something. I hate breakfast burritos because of the soft squishy tasteless parts inside a hard tasteless tortilla, but this wasn't like that. Tortilla was soft and fresh and the inside was full of flavor even though it was just eggs and cheese by the time I got it. Hub had taken out all the bacon because it was how he likes it, not burnt, which is how I like it. When I get mine, I'll ask for the bacon on the side and deep fried, so it's dry and crisp :) read more

I've lived in Camarillo for 20 years and have heard many times this is the spot for breakfast burritos. Finally today my oldest daughter dragged me here. We parked in the back, I didn't know there was this lot. This was one thing that discouraged me from trying this place, the parking. But with the lot in backlit is easy in and out. The man who helped us was very polite and patient. He helped explain what burritos we were looking for based on our wants. We then waited and walked around the store. We waiting a very long time and asked about our food. Guess there was a mixup and our food had been ready for a while. The food was still warm and delicious. Somis Cafe has my heart because I had the best carnitas burrito here the other day and I can't stop thinking about it. What a shame I've driven by this spot so many times without stopping in, don't wait so long and be like me, hurry and check this spot out! A sweet little cafe and market in Somis. I had no idea what authentic and delicious Mexican food they were serving up in this joint. This spot will be a new rotation of mine when I'm craving a hearty carnitas burrito. They had some parking in the back but I would recommend coming for an early lunch as I could tell this spot started to get a little busy by 12pm. When you walk inside you order at the front counter where you would ring up your snacks. They have a menu posted with all of your classic staples. I was starving and went with a burrito. At first I worried there weren't enough toppings in the burrito but trust me the flavor is there! I bought a massive burrito with meat, beans, rice, and pico for under $13. What an absolute steal! The gentlemen working the counter/register was very nice. Waited for my number to be called from the sweet lady who was working the kitchen. I was impressed that my order was called out in about 5 minutes. They have a very cute dining room that you can eat at but I was working so opted for my burrito to go. Definitely would love to come back to eat inside as it was cozy and nice. Back to my burrito. The carnitas burrito here is a 10/10. Omg what flavor! The juiciest and most flavorful carnitas meat I've ever had. I'm a stickler for good carnitas, normally I need my pork to have a little crunch but here that wasn't necessary. The grilled pork was super flavorful despite not having the char I usually crave. The flavors were just so good it was perfect as is. We had a Michelada (perfection) asada fries (pretty good) chicken quesadilla (life changing for my 9 year old) it had oozy melty gooey cheese with a perfect side of pico de gallo. Always disappointing sadly. Everyone who works here is SO nice but the food is always a letdown. Got a burrito and nachos today. The tortilla around the burrito was soggy and gummy (like bubblegum) and the nachos look like something thrown together from junk sitting in my pantry which is wild because they charge $14.99!! My wife and I have been coming to Somis Market for several years now. This tiny hole in the wall is so charming and welcoming. We are Hispanic and my mother was considered by all a fantastic Mexican food maker. She has since past but I'm not missing anything when I go to Somis Market for breakfast on the weekends. Get there early because by 10:00 it gets really busy. Their llevos rancheros are the best I have ever tried. With the chile verde sauce and chunks of pork, authentic beans and rice and I love their home made corn tortillas. I would eat this every day if I could. The posole and the menudo are second to none. Those are my second option if I'm feeling soup. The waitress Dorthy is a doll, always so cheerful and efficient. Always goes above and beyond serving us. I'm shocked this place has not been on " Diners and Drive-in and Drives". Well probably for the better because the secret would be out and we would probably have to wait a very long time to eat. This is an old favorite of mine. I came back after many years (I've been out of the area). I love that you pick eight canned or bottled drink at the market place next-door and then come in an order. Wonderful. I was disappointed to come into the dining room an hour before closing and they already have the chairs up on all but 2 tables. Not very welcoming. 2 weeks ago, I went to Somis Cafe, for lunch and had delicious steak burrito, and my wife ordered Chile Relleno to sample, which was like having it made in your kitchen at home., incredible, and delicious. The next 2 times, Chile Rellenos and Chile Colorado, orgasmic, to the taste buds, with a large Jamaica, excellent. As I'm now in NorCal, I, SO MISS, SOMIS Cafe and Market, and shout out to Dorothy, who took great care of us, making sure that we had everything that we ordered. This is a little place that's easy to miss. The food is probably the most authentic food in the area considering that Mexican food is not a strong suit in Camarillo ( the next city over). It is a green building. The lady's who work here and cashiers are always nice, relaxed, and respectful. There are times where it gets full so you can order ahead, or be patient and order there and wait for a table. They have hand made tortillas obviously for a little extra but they are tasty. I have had their menudo(i believe they serve this Friday- Sunday), micheladas, tacos, and they have like an entire little shop almost like a liquor store -so there are many snack options. Same great food but completely understaffed. The poor wait staff is trying to do everything at once instead of doing anything right. The expectations are not high in a place like this but having the items on the table in the correct order at the correct time is necessary to enjoy the meal. We started the meal 10 minutes before getting tortillas, 15 minutes before getting chips and salsa, we never rec'd our complete drink order, and had to chase down the waitress for cilantro, onions and lemon for the menudo. We where participating in a Holiday event at the Hagle Christmas Tree Farm. The Food Vendors were ok but a bit over priced. Then I remembered where I was at. Way back in the day when I used to mentor at the local grade school we used grab lunch at the Somis Market. It never disappointed so I thought I'd take a shot and see if they were still around and open. Needless to say I took a break from our event and walked over to the market for some burritos (Chile Verde, Asada, and Chile Colorado) Once again the did not disappoint. Large Burritos, Rice and Beans, Pico and Salsa Rojo. Now let me be clear. This is local spot. Nothing Fancy, There is a small sit down restaurant with table service, and tables outside. But it's no frills, and takeout is what most folks do. A bite on the run while trucking on thru. As for the food. Everyone was happy full and we didn't break the bank. Big on Flavor and Size. I'm not quite sure where to start. My friend who likes Mexican food as much as I do suggested we eat here. He said the chimichanga burrito boat is supposed to be excellent. I had no idea what to expect and ordered the same, but with chicken and cheese inside. It was like a chimichanga smothered in chili beans and sauce. It was so foreign to me. I asked for sour cream. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with the flavor of the chicken. It tasted gamey or maybe just had zero seasoning. I ordered a michelada, but they were out of the original so they gave me a tamarindo michelada. I didn't even know there was such a thing and I would not recommmend it. The salsas were sub par. These people writing reviews that they drive long distance to eat here makes no sense to me. Maybe for nostalgic memories. There is much better Mexican food in Camarillo, Ventura, Oxnard, and Thousand Oaks. The server was sweet. The bathroom was clean. The place had most tables full at 12 pm on a Saturday. I was trying to get a glimpse of what others ordered to see if their food was appealing. I didn't see anything. I didn't take photos, but I did look at the already posted photos and there are chimichanga boats posted. I won't be back, if the food was as good as was their reputation I'd drive there from Ventura anytime Ivhae a Mexican food craving...but it's just hype. My friend at all of his food, but he was also disappointed. I hate having to give these types of reviews, but I have to be honest. The town of Somis, and this Cafe, define "off the beaten path", but if you find your self passing through Camarillo on 101 it's worth the 8 minute detour to stop here. I've been enjoying the food here for more than 25 years and little has changed. The Carne Asada taco and breakfast burrito are outstanding. The cafe is clean and staffed by great people.
